Chamber Welcome On behalf of the Brooklyn Area Chamber of Commerce we would like to introduce the first annual Brooklyn Area Community Guide . We are excited to share the many businesses, community groups and amenities in the Brooklyn area . Brooklyn is a small town conveniently located within a half hour drive of Madison and Janesville . Families residing in Brooklyn have access to Brooklyn Elementary School (Kindergarten through 4th Grade) which is part of the Oregon School District . The University of Wisconsin-Madison recently conducted a study on Brooklyn due to the significant growth and retention of our young adult population . The study revealed that people are moving and staying in Brooklyn because they see it

as a safe, small and affordable community with an outstanding community-oriented school . Our active businesses and community organizations are contributing factors to this positive transformation . We strongly encourage you to support the organizations highlighted in this guide . Levi Cutler, President Brooklyn Area Chamber of Commerce

Brooklyn Area History filed a plat map and registered as the proprietor of the Village of Brooklyn in 1868 . The railroad allowed residents to travel to larger communities, brought commercial development, and the village grew . It formally incorporated as a Village in March of 1905 . Merchants from Evansville, Oregon and Rutland came to Brooklyn soon after to set up markets and businesses . Primarily an agronomy economy, the Plat Map of 1891 shows stockyards and the first industry, the Duplex Windmill factory, were both located on Market Street . They were followed The Village of Brooklyn started out as part of the Town of Brooklyn and Town of Rutland . Charles Sutherland received a land grant in 1844, and after homesteading for two years, he was deeded the quarter section 1-4-9 . The Town of Brooklyn was registered in 1849 and the “village” developed in this town . Growth of the village began in 1855 when Hiram Capwell purchased land from Sutherland and enticed the railroad to locate through his property . The railroad laid tracks in 1864 and Capwell

This building burned down and a second school was built in 1903 at the site of the present school . Our school was incorporated with the Oregon School District in 1962 . Brooklyn Elementary School is still an anchor of the community . The downtown businesses remained a strong commercial district, housing a century bank, post office and retail stores . Village & Town Resources The Village of Brooklyn is a community of approximately 1,417 people situated halfway between Madison and Janesville in Dane and Green Counties and bordering Rock County to the south . This proximity to urban areas allows Brooklyn to maintain its “small-town” feel, yet have access to the amenities offered by the larger communities . The Brooklyn Elementary School, more affordable housing and the sense of safety have been cited as reasons for families moving into the village . Labor Day Weekend is host to the Brooklyn SnoHornets and Oregon Sno-Blazers Truck and Tractor Pull and also the Brooklyn Recreation Committee’s Fall Arts & Crafts Fair . The Community Antique Tractor Pullers host a tractor pull on Memorial Day Weekend . The Recreation Committee introduced Brooklyn Night Out for the first time in 2017 . It was a huge success that hopefully will continue for years to come . The Committee also works hard to offer a variety of activities for residents throughout the year including the yearly Dime-A-Dip community potluck, holiday tree lighting and community house lighting contest, weekly exercise and yoga classes,
