BUSINESS, FARM OR HOME SURVEILLANCE “We have 3 cameras that I use to help manage cows and employees. The cameras are all on one single screen and very easy to use. I can remotely access them from my home computer and my phone. Majestic View This saves me time when there Dairy is an issue, I can first check the cameras to see if I actually need to make a trip to the farm. We can replay all the cameras if needed. If there is a problem with the system, we receive great tech support whether it be over the phone or in person.”
“Tim has been extremely helpful, quick, and insightful with all of our needs. The camera system we have allows me to monitor our facility from anywhere there’s an internet connection or cell phone West End service. It allows me to make Salvage sure our property is protected from theft while at work, or away from the office at anytime of the day. The camera surveillance system from Fuller’s has been a great asset to our company and I would recommend them with 100% certainty!”

To Steve, Janet and Evan and also to Steve’s little sister and his niece. Little did we imagine Christmas in December of 2014, is time to enjoy the fruits of their labor in September of 2015. Your time provided as painters, flooring installers and carpenters make the end of each day more restful. And where would we be without the completely new and improved bathroom in our old abode. You’ve done it all from consultants, designers, purchasing agents, material-transportation handlers, demolition crew, plumbers, electricians, carpenters and excavators. Least we forget also dinner host, cooks and gardeners. Us older folks really appreciate the new, larger and more efficient bathroom. And all this done while still working full-time and school plus as community volunteers.
Thanks you again, Love Mom & Dad K
Thanks also to Andy, Sue and Matt for helping with tree & wood removals and equipment usage.

He will always be remembered as a kind and gentle man who fought a long and courageous battle with Cancer and COPD. He loved living in the beautiful valley of Avoca. Thank you for the over whelming love our family has received in these last few weeks. We have been blessed in the past year with wonderful people helping us in many ways, including driving Lee to Madison for Radiation. All of the phone calls, cards, flowers and food were very much appreciated. Thank you to all who waited in line to express their sympathy at the visitation and those who attended the Funeral. A special thank you to Dr. Bard, Dr. Delventhal, the wonderful nurses and the hospital staff at both the Richland and U.W. Hospitals. To Upland Hills Home Health and Hospice, endless thank you's for their extraordinary loving care. We appreciated the great service of the Avoca Rescue Squad and the special care giver at the Golden Living Center. Lee was a WWll Navy Veteran and received a special Military Ceremony at the grave site. The Navy Honor Guard from Madison folded the flag, Taps were played, and the American Legion post 335 presented the 21 Gun Salute. Thank you, Pastor Jeanne Jones, for your heart felt sermon and to Pastor Jean Bartlett, for your special reading. Thank you to the Melby Funeral Home, Clary Funeral Home and The White House banquet, for their outstanding services. From Betty Hayes Baxter Cheryl, George & Ellington Ratliff Happy 90th Birthday Lee on September 19. We love you and we will always miss you.

The Right Mattress
A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP IS A NECESSITY Good health and sleep are closely linked. Just as we improve our eating habits for better health, we should also improve our sleep habits for better health. Sleep debt is a costly problem in our society, both fiscally and physically. Four out of every five people suffer from back pain and studies show we are not as productive or safe when we do not get enough rest. Back pain comes in a close second to the common cold as the most frequent cause of lost work time. Sleep should be a priority and not just a negotiable need that is determined by our busy schedules. Good sleep not only lessens costly back problems but helps to prepare us for a more productive, alert and safe day ahead. Poor sleep and back problems are like the chicken and the egg theory. Which came first? Are backaches the cause of lack of sleep or does lack of sleep cause back problems? Both may be helped with the right mattress. The lower back or lumbar region is the most common area for back pain because it bears the wear and tear of bending, stooping, sitting, and lifting. A good mattress supports the back and allows the muscles to rest and rejuvenate during sleep. Poor sleep does not allow this to happen, nor does a poor sleep surface. Experts recommend mattresses that offer superior support without being too hard. The bottom line is: The right mattress is very important to our overall health.
It is important to find a mattress with edgeguard because it gives you more mattress surface to actually sleep on. You might as well use all of it since you are paying for all of it! Everyone has natural curves in their back. Usually the harder the surface the more the back has to drop out of alignment to meet the mattress. The optimal mattress has enough padding to support your back without allowing it to drop out of its natural alignment. A plush mattress with good support will do just that. VALUE Most people sleep about one-third of the life. What else do you do for that amount of time that affects the other twothirds of your life? We think nothing of spending $300 to $400 on a TV that comes with a one-year warranty and that, if you are lucky, will last five years. But many people think it’s appalling to spend $700 to $800 on a new queen mattress that comes with a 10-year nonprorated warranty and will easily last 10 years. This same mattress, if picked properly, will give you many nights of great sleep and ultimately better productive days, too. Many will pay up to 40 percent more for a new car than they did a decade ago, yet the same person expects to pay the $299.99 prices of a decade ago when it comes to buying a new mattress. Value is relative, but when you think of using an item everyday, 365 days a year for 10 years, a good quality mattress for $800 is costing you a little less than 26 cents per day. Shopping for the best value doesn’t mean finding the lowest price. Bargain bedding is no bargain when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep. Are you the type of person who will spend $150 on running shoes that you wear three or four times a week but is only willing to spend $330 on a mattress that you sleep on eight hours a night for 10 years? There have been many advancements in mattress manufacturing. Many are designed by orthopedic doctors with proper support and great comfort levels to keep you properly aligned all night. Mattresses have many price points to meet everyone’s pocket book. Bottom line: If you aren’t satisfied with your current bedding and sleep comfort, there is a proper support mattress out there for you in your price range. And remember, how you sleep at night generally determines how you will feel for the rest of the day.
Four out of every five people suffer from back pain and studies show we are not as productive or safe when we do not get enough rest.
THE BIGGEST MATTRESS MYTH The old adage “hard is better” is truly a myth. No single sleep surface is right for everyone. Therefore a store that carries a varied selection of comfort levels is the place to start. Such variables as body temperature, sleep position, and lighting should be taken into account. Mattresses come in plush, pillow-top, ultra plush, ultra plus pillow-top, firm and cushion firm. All these comfort levels are just that - comfort levels. It is different from support level. Support level has to do with the coil count and coil construction. The proper support may be achieved in all of the different comfort levels. Depending on whether you are a stomach, side or back sleeper (or a combination) will determine the comfort level you will sleep better and longer on. And that is the goal. Although there are some exceptions to the rule, a good coil count number to keep in mind for proper support is as follows: Twin 420 or higher, full, 600 or higher; queen, 736 or higher; king, 930 or higher. The quality of fabric and different foams used should also be taken into consideration.
Important Points
1. Mattresses come in plush, pillow-top, ultra plush, ultra plush pillow-top, firm and cushion firm and all can have the same proper support. 2. Find a mattress with edge guard because it gives you more
mattress surface to sleep on. 3. The best foundation is a box spring with a steel center beam and cross rails of steel and wood. 4.Once you choose a comfort level, you’ll want to choose the best mattress in that level that you can afford.
Tips For Shopping 1. Find the support and comfort level that best suits your sleeping habits. 2. Let your body make the final decision. Don’t buy a mattress solely because of the brand name. adno=428258-01

Just as you do not make an emergency plan for a fire when the fire occurs, you should not make your choice of health care facility when you are in crisis. The most important criteria when choosing a hospital will come from advance research. Researching your area hospitals will create an informed consumer who can make decisions based on the facility’s best overall care and specialized services to fit their needs. There are several avenues one can take to find a hospital that meets their particular needs. The first avenue would be to research each hospital’s accreditation. Accreditation is linked directly to quality of patient care, quality of facility, and quality of staff and physicians. The primary accreditation service is the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. JCAHO is a notfor-profit, independent organization founded in 1951 that reviews safety and quality of the nation’s health care facilities through a voluntary but rigorous accreditation process. This process is ongoing to ensure that the hospital is staying in compliance with ever changing regulations. There are more than 18,000 hospitals accredited by JCAHO each year and information about the Joint Commission or the accredited hospitals can be found on their website at JCAHO.org. For further research into a particular facility one may try some other independent rating organizations like Solutient’s “Top 100 Hospitals.” These independent organizations rate the standards for different hospitals by category: major teaching, large community, medium community, and small community. These studies will give information in relation to the size of community in which you live in and what type of technological advances and studies are available. Does the facility have a staff dedicated to standards of quality? A Dedicated Quality Department will ensure that every employee in each department is implementing and insuring rigorous guidelines and protocol. This ensures that the hospital exceeds quality standards resulting in optimal care for each patient.
WHO WILL HELP ME AT THE HOSPITAL? After researching various websites, call the customer service center at the hospital. Ask the customer service representative if they are accredited by JCAHO and what is their customer satisfaction rating. Also, ask about the facility’s safety records and methodologies. The customer service center will also be a good directional source for information on financial aid and patient’s rights and responsibilities. The next level of customer service should be during the patient’s stay at the hospital. The facility should offer a service coordinator or someone who will explain to the patient and family what is happening at all points throughout the length of the hospital stay. This person should ensure all medical, financial, and miscellaneous needs are met. The last phase of customer service from a particular facility should be the post-patient care. What kind of service will the patient receive during the recovery time? The most important thing to remember is to be educated and make an informed decision about the facilities in the area and which facility fits your needs.
There are several avenues one can take to find a hospital that meets their particular needs
The Top Five Things You Should Know...
VISIT THE HOSPITAL BEFORE YOU NEED IT Visiting a hospital is an important step in making an informed decision about future treatment for you or your family. At the initial visit with a physician or customer service representative, always ask specific questions. This will help in the flow of information and also may trigger any other concerns you may have about a facility. Look at the core values and philosophies of the hospital, read their mission statement and check to see if they can deliver what they promise. Look around and make note of how the staff interacts with each other and their patients. Do they exude the compassion, professionalism and care that you would hope to receive? If you do your homework now, you and your family will make decisions that maximize your experience in a hospital when the need arises.
1. Is the hospital accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO)? 2. Do they have a Dedicated Quality Department?
3. What are their customer satisfaction indicators or scores? 4. What is the experience, training and certification of the physicians and staff? 5. What are the core values that guide the hospital and its employees?

I had a stage 1 tumor. Early detection saved my life.” — Karen Manning (Richland Hospital offers state of the art digital radiology.) Janet Brown discussed with Dr. Janice Alexander the lack of freedom her embarrassing condition had been causing. “Talking with her about InterstimTM gave me new hope. The surgical nurses were so sweet. They helped me feel relaxed before surgery. I’m so glad Dr. Alexander was able to help me.” — Janet Brown Delaney Imhoff had her tonsils and adenoids removed at the Richland Hospital. “Dr. Delventhal was great with Delaney. The whole staff did a great job and worked well as a team to make the surgery experience easy to deal with.” — Roanne Imhoff

ARE YOU READY TO BUY? Don’t Have An Inside Track? It’s Time To Consult A Professional . . . Are you about to take one of the most important steps of a lifetime, the selection and purchase of some kind of real estate? If you are like thousands of others, you are seeking something in the country or in a small town. You see, more and more Americans are moving to small towns or in the country to establish a lifestyle away from the big city or suburbs. If you have decided to make this move, finding what you want might appear impossible. But this decision doesn’t have to be overwhelming, so if you don’t have an inside track about what’s for sale and where, it is time to consult a professional. What’s the first thing to do? Find free real estate publications that have properties in the areas where you want to buy. Or, use the internet to select the area and type of properties you are interested in. This will also guide you in finding a licensed real estate professional that can assist you in finding a property quickly and efficiently. Remember, many small town or country real estate companies serve a large surrounding area. Once you have selected a realty professional, discuss with him/her the type of property that is suitable for your needs. To do this, you must ask yourself some questions. 1. Is my family still growing? 2. What are their needs? 3. Are schools a factor? 4. Do I want minimum grounds upkeep? Maybe just a garden? 5. Do I plan to own horses or several animals? 6. Do I need to be within commuting distance of a certain town for job possibilities? 7. Am I a fixer-upper, or a total zilch with a hammer? 8. Will I be using it as a second home? 9. Will I keep the property to use for retirement or as investment? 10. What is most important about the lifestyle I want to accomplish? 11. Next, provide information to the salesperson about what you can afford. This way, he/she has the tools to assist you, including how much a bank may lend you, and on what basis it is calculated. Once a price range is established, the salesperson will have the information to help you find the right property within your guidelines.

REAL ESTATE TERMS YOU SHOULD KNOW Get Familiar With Commonly Used Terms In The Real Estate Industry . . . If you are involved in buying or selling real estate. Or, just for your general knowledge. There are numerous terms, commonly used jargon, in the real estate industry that make
Title Insurance An insurance policy that protects a lender’s or owner’s interest in real property from assorted types of unexpected or fraudulent claims of ownership. It’s customary for the buyer to pay for the lender’s title insurance policy.
Following are some basic terms that are often misunderstood: MLS—Multiple Listing Service An organization that collects, compiles, and distributes information about properties listed for sale by its members, who are real estate brokers. Membership isn’t open to the general public, although selected MLS data may be sold to real estate listing websites. MLS’s can be local or regional. There is no “one” MLS covering the entire nation. PITI Principle, interest, taxes and insurance (PITI) are the four components of a onthly mortgage payment. Principal refers to the part of the monthly payment that reduces the remaining balance of the mortgage. Interest is the fee charged for borrowing the money. Taxes and insurance refer to the amounts that are paid into an escrow account each month for property taxes and mortgage and hazard insurance.

Four Things You Should Know...
CMA Comparative Market Analysis. A CMA is a report that shows prices of properties that are comparable to a subject property and that were recently sold, are currently on the market or were on the market, but not sold within the listing period. Closing Costs The entire package of miscellaneous expenses paid by the buyer and seller when the transaction closes. These costs include the brokerage commission, mortgage-related fees, escrow or attorney’s charges, recording fees, title insurance, etc. Closing costs generally are paid through escrow. Contingency provision of an agreement that keeps the agreement from being fully legally binding until a certain condition is met. One common example is a buyer’s contractual right to obtain a professional home inspection before purchasing the home.
1. Look for an agent who is a member of the local board or association of realtors. 2. An agent should explain and disclose their role and who they represent.
3. The agent should advise you on how to prepare your home for the market. 4. Be sure the professional shows enthusiasm, listens well, instills confidence and has a personality that is complementary to your own.

It is vital for your family member that you spend a considerable amount of time researching the nursing home before you send them to the home. It is much easier to pick a good home in the beginning than it is to choose a poor home and have to go through the many obstacles to improve the care or try to transfer your family member to another facility. It is important not to judge the nursing home on the basis of a guided tour or the nice furniture and wallpaper in the lobby. You must remember that, especially in a for-profit nursing home, they put a lot of effort in marketing to convince you to bring your family member to their home. The pictures of happy grandmas in their brochures, nice dining rooms and landscaped entrances do not give you an idea of the quality of the basic care that your family member will receive. There are many ways to go about selecting a nursing home that will be right for you. Besides researching state inspection reports, getting word of mouth recommendations and looking at promotional literature; nothing is more valuable than the insight you gain from making personal visits. Visit more than one nursing home, and visit more than once. Ask a lot of questions, and trust your feelings about the places you visit. Find out as much as you can about each nursing home. A good way to do this is to talk to: • The long-term care ombudsman, who visits nursing homes and investigates complaints. • Doctors, nurses, hospital social workers, clergy, and other professionals who are familiar with nursing homes. • Family members and friends of people who live in the nursing homes. • Residents of the nursing homes. • Nursing home employees, especially nursing assistants, who give 90 per cent of the care.
• Are there always enough linens and other supplies? • Are families concerned about fee increases or extra charges for supplies or services? • Is the “quality of life” good-such things as choices of food at meals and which clothes to wear, a homelike environment, and interesting or entertaining activities? • Does the nursing home have an active resident council? • An active family council? • Are there some really good things about this facility? PLANNING Planning ahead is one of the best ways to ease the emotional stress when seeking a nursing home. If you are helping a relative or a friend find a nursing home, involve them in the process as much as possible. If the person is mentally alert, it is essential that their wishes be considered every step of the way. By planning ahead and educating yourself and your family about nursing home care and services, it will become a much easier transition when you can no longer put off admitting someone to a nursing home. It will also put the future resident’s mind at ease to know what to expect in the admission process and the first few days in their new home. • Visit rooms where various therapies and recreational programs are held. • Observe the dining area, beauty salon and the schedules for each. • Inquire about security measures, especially for residents who have a tendency to wander. • Ask about facility policies regarding use or installation of telephones, cable television and bringing personal items into the facility. • Observe how the staff meets with you and how they interact with other residents during your visit (are they respectful, caring, and attentive?) • Observe if the residents are occupied, supervised, satisfied, well groomed and if the rooms are personalized. • Is the facility free of overwhelming unpleasant odors? • Is the home clean and well-maintained? • Do chairs and other furniture seem sturdy, attractive and comfortable? • Is the facility well lighted? • Taste the food, is it good? • Are the residents who need help eating receiving assistance? • Are there hand rails in hallways and grab bars in bathrooms? • Is the temperature comfortable? • Do patients’ rooms have windows?
There are many ways to go about selecting a nursing home that will be right for you.
ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT ANY NURSING HOME YOU’RE INTERESTED IN. Examples: • Do people you talk to regard this as a good nursing home? • Has the state licensing agency found an unusual number of violations here? •Does the home have enough staff, especially nursing assistants, to give residents the care and personal attention they need? • Are staff friendly, considerate, and helpful? • Are residents treated with dignity and respect? • Are there a lot of staff changes because workers leave? • Do staff do their jobs well? • Does the nursing home provide the special services your loved one needs?
The Top Four Things You Should Know...
1. Do not choose a nursing home on the basis of a guided tour or the nice furniture and wallpaper in the lobby. 2. In selecting a nursing home make personal visits.
3. Ask a lot of questions about any nursing home you’re interested in. 4. Planning ahead is one of the best ways to ease the emotional stress when seeking a nursing home.

An ATV (All terrain vehicle) is an off-road vehicle designed for off road use. They are used for work or recreation on a variety of terrain, including snow, land, mud, sand, or rocks. ATVs have three or four wheels, a seat that is straddled by the driver, low pressure tires, and an engine from 50 to 500 cc displacement. They come in both two and four wheel drive. ATVs can range in price from $750 for an older model to $7,500 for a top of the line model. ATVs can be used for a wide variety of activities and terrains. In choosing your ATV, it is important to determine what you will primarily be using it for, sport or work. The Michigan ATV association categorizes three types of ATVs: Sport, which are built for high speed, rough terrain driving, with aggressive maneuvering and driving; Sport Utility, designed to be used for both sport and work; and Utility, used for plowing, towing, and slower speed actions, often for farming, construction, logging, or emergency vehicles. Be advised that while a Sport Utility ATV can be used for recreation, it will have a limited performance capacity compared to Sport ATVs. Driving an ATV can be a physically demanding task. You should be able to reach all the controls, both hand and foot, and you should be able to handle a full range of motion on the handlebars. An appropriate position includes your foot standing flat on the floorboard or peg, knees bent at a 90 degree angle. Your knees should not be too high, and your shoulders should not be hunched over. A larger machine may not be sturdier than a smaller one. A larger vehicle may be heavier and less maneuverable. Be sure that you have the physical strength to handle the machine, and larger machines are more difficult to use.
Engine size is also a consideration. While higher cc engines are more powerful, there is a trade off in fuel efficiency and machine weight. Average is between 300 and 500 cc. ATVs come in both automatic and manual transmissions, as with cars. Manual transmissions require more attention and experience to handle. While automatic transmissions are considered top of the line, they have more difficulty on steep climbs. Some manual transmissions have what is called a low range selection that allows the vehicle to maintain a high RPM while moving slowly over steep rocky terrain. Many vehicles have specific design functions, such as sand paddles for sand dunes, or a rack that can hold supplies for overnight trips. Fourwheel drive vehicles use the power of all four tires to drive the ATV. A four-wheel drive vehicle more easily handles rougher terrain. Two-wheel drive vehicles use only the rear tires. Sport vehicles tend to come in two-wheel drive because they allow the vehicle to go faster. Four wheel drive is useful for steeper climbs and heavier payloads. Four-wheel drive vehicles can be up to a thousand dollars more than two-wheel drive. If you are inexperienced at riding, you may want to look into any local ATV or off-roading clubs for advice. This may also offer the opportunity to try other members’ ATVs to get a feel for different vehicles. To insure that you are comfortable with your choice of ATV, you may want to find a dealer who will allow you to rent before buying. If money is an object, it may be prudent to look into buying a used vehicle.
In choosing your ATV, it is important to determine what you will primarily be using it for, sport or work.

Who Is Your Provider? The importance of establishing a primary care provider. The relationship we have with our primary care provider is one of the most important relationships we have. It’s a working relationship focused on maintaining our overall health and wellbeing–a guiding hand through every stage of our lives. A primary care provider is a health care practitioner who provides care to people with common medical issues. These individuals are usually a Doctor (MD), but they can also be a nurse practitioner (FNP, DNP, NP, etc.) or a physician assistant (PA, PA-C). We find ourselves in need of medical care at every stage of our lives, from birth to the end of life. As a result, it’s likely that your primary care provider will be involved in your health care for many years, so it is important to choose someone who you work well with and who makes you feel comfortable. The role of your primary care provider. Primary care providers are your main contact in non-emergency medical situations. They provide preventive care and promote healthy lifestyle choices, diagnose and treat common medical conditions and provide referrals to medical specialists when necessary. Primary care providers typically provide care in an outpatient setting through clinics. If you are admitted to the hospital, depending on the circumstances, your primary care provider may be asked to assist in directing your care. This is most common in cases where longterm medical conditions, such as asthma, may have caused complications resulting in being admitted to the hospital. Having your primary care provider on hand in these situations is important as they are able to provide the hospital staff with a history of the condition as well as provide you with some much needed reassurance. As our needs change, so should our providers As we advance through the various stages of life, we find ourselves needing different forms of care. As we prepare to raise a family, we are most in need of a primary care provider who can provide obstetrical and gynecological care, pregnancy care and lead us up to, and through, a healthy and successful birth. Once we give birth, we may choose to stay with our primary care provider while our newborn child begins their care with a provider who specializes in pediatrics. Our child may stay with their pediatrician until they are 18, when they move on to choosing a general or family practitioner. The cycle continues from there.
It is important that you select the right primary care provider for you and your expected health care needs for each stage of your life. Insurance Many insurance plans place limits on the types of providers you can choose from, so it’s a good idea to contact your insurance provider to make sure you know what your insurance will cover before choosing your primary care provider. If you do not have a primary care provider, and a non-emergency health problem arises, you should seek non-emergency care from an urgent care clinic rather than a hospital emergency room. This will often save you money. TYPES OF PRIMARY CARE PROVIDERS Family Practitioners/General Practitioners: These doctors see children and adults of all ages and in many cases handle obstetrical care and minor surgery. They have also completed a residency program, around 11 years of post-high-school medical education and are board-certified or board-eligible for their specialty.

If you’ve seen any home makeovers in magazines or on TV you know that paint colors can dramatically transform a room. Painting is one of the least expensive ways to redecorate a room but many people feel intimidated when choosing colors. In the past most people stayed with safe interior shades such as beige, off white, light blue and light green. Today the range of colors and paints makes it easier to become more adventurous. Before you choose a paint color, think about how the room is used and how you respond to different colors emotionally. Look at home decorating magazines and clip out color schemes and rooms that appeal to you. Keep in mind that paint can enhance a room’s features or it can be used to hide flaws. Yellow, orange and red are classified as warm colors while blues, greens and purples are labeled cool. You may want to choose cool colors to create a relaxing ambience in a bedroom. A warm yellow adds warmth to a chilly den or dining room. Decorators often use light colors such as cream and white to make smaller rooms appear larger. Dark colors such as navy or red can evoke a cozier mood in a very large room. Don’t forget to take your floor covering into consideration when choosing paint colors. A very dark wood floor or a dark colored carpet will have an effect on how wall colors look. Upholstery texture and patterns may also influence your choice of paint colors. Decide if you want the room to have a warm, casual ambience or a more formal feeling. Visit a local paint, hardware or home improvement store and collect a variety of brochures and paint samples. Pay attention to displays showing textured walls and paints with special effects. Consider how various paint combinations would look in different rooms. Take the paint chips home and look at them in natural and artificial light. When you particularly love one color such as blue-green, try using neighboring colors on the color wheel as accents to create an analogous color scheme. Interior designers often advise their clients to take a look at their wardrobes before selecting a new color for the bedroom or living room. If you have a lot of blues and greens in your closet, chances are you’ll be happy with some variation of those colors on your walls. You may want to coordinate paint colors using hues from a favorite rug or painting. Monochromatic colors are the easiest to work with when decorating. Basically you choose one color and use varying shades of it throughout the room to create a sense of casual coordination. For example a medium yellow room could have slightly darker molding, a lighter ceiling and yellow print wallpaper on one wall. Complimentary colors can be a little tricky. When choosing colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel such as blue and orange or green and red, it is best to use them as accents or accessories to avoid garish contrasts. Color can also be used to create the illusion of a different sized room. A square room looks very different when one wall
is painted a different color. Try enhancing interesting architectural features such as a window seat or beams by painting them a coordinating or contrasting color from the walls. You can make a very narrow room seem wider by painting the shorter walls a darker color than the longer walls. The color you choose for the ceiling is very important. A lighter color is a better choice for a low ceiling in a small room. A dark color is the best solution when you have a cavernous room with a ceiling that seems too high. Hallways and foyers will seem warmer to guests if you choose a warm color like yellow or peach. Red and green are popular choices for dining rooms and kitchens, while pale blue and lavender are considered romantic choices for bedrooms. Bathrooms allow you to be a little more dramatic. For example a black and white color scheme in a bathroom can be quite sophisticated but in a small bedroom the same look could be overwhelming. Consider using a technique such as sheen striping to create vertical stripes of the same color but in different sheens or textures. It’s a sophisticated decorating trick that not only creates visual interest but also helps create the illusion of height in rooms with low ceilings.

Tips for Color Scheme
Copyright © 2005 Publishers-Edge. By Jeanne Thompson
CHOOSING A COLOR SCHEME 1. First, choose a style (formal or casual) and a theme for your room (such as American country, English garden, techno modern). 2. With the style and theme in mind, decide on an anchor fabric that has 3 or more colors. 3. Use the background color from the fabric as a wall color. 4. Pick a mid-toned color from the fabric for flooring and large furniture pieces, which could be a solid or patterned design. Upholstery can also be done in your anchor fabric or coordinating fabric. 5. Use the brightest colors from the fabric for accessories and accents like welting, picture mats, and decorative pillows. 6. Place your anchor fabric in at least three places in the room (upholstery, pillows, curtains, etc). 7. Use coordinating fabrics in other scales (larger or smaller) as accent fabrics on chairs, pillows, cording, and tablecloths. 8. For example, to use an ‘anchor’ fabric with an American flag design: use white (the background color) for walls, navy (a mid-toned color) on floor, blue and white ticking on the sofa, and red (the brightest color) for accessories and accents. 9. To continue this example, the coordinated prints could be the blue and white ticking stripe, a navy star print fabric, and a red and white mini-check used on chairs, curtains, and pillows.
1. Repeat colors evenly throughout the room, and in at least 3 places. 2. Adding dressmaker details in cording and trims is one way to disperse color and add interest.
3. Divide color use to approximately 60% of the room in the background (lightest) color, 30% in the mid-tone color, and 10% in the brightest, accent colors. adno=428218-01

The reasons for preferring cremation are varied. For some, it seems a more natural process than burial. Others have environmental concerns with burial. Still others are not sure why they feel more comfortable with cremation but are interested in learning more. This article is for all of you. Most funeral homes provide some type of cremation service, but some specialize in providing cremation services. For many consumers it is important the funeral home they select own and operate their own crematory as opposed to transferring the deceased to an off-site crematory. The peace of mind of knowing one funeral home is prepared and experienced to provide the services you require is well worth the effort required to become educated and make an informed choice. Because it is important to be informed, many people choose to make their decisions in advance. Making pre-arrangements with your selected funeral home will help assure your wishes will be carried out following death. It also spares your family from the burden of making decisions during the emotional time after a death. Many people wonder whether cremation is consistent with their religious beliefs. There was a time when some religions disapproved of the cremation process. Today, most permit cremation. It is a good idea to discuss your concerns with your clergy, as individual congregations may differ from nationwide or worldwide church policies. Another reason for preferring cremation is the many options available for services and final disposition. In fact, cremation offers more options than does traditional burial. For example, choices are available in the type and scheduling of gathering or celebration, the final disposition of cremated remains, and ways to remember or “memorialize” the deceased.
Cremation followed by Memorial Service: Following either private or public viewing, the body is cremated. A service or gathering is held at a place of the family’s choosing, to commemorate the life of the deceased. Eulogies, readings, music and the sharing of photos, videos, and personal collections and hobbies are often part of the gathering. The gathering is an opportunity for those who cared about the deceased to remember them in a special way, and to say good-bye. Funeral Service followed by cremation Probably the greatest misconception about cremation is that there can be no funeral. Many people choosing cremation have a traditional funeral service, followed by cremation. The funeral service may be conducted in a funeral home, church, or any other appropriate setting. Clergy may conduct the service, but this is not required. Some will prefer a less formal format of sharing memories and feelings. The funeral service is personalized by including things to help those attending to better know and remember the deceased, such as flowers, photos, videos and music. Choosing a casket, urn, burial vault, and stationery items that reflect the loved one’s life complements these items. Funeral directors who specialize in cremation will have many examples for you to look at and choose from. Anyone who has ever tried to write a family history knows it can take a little time. Planning to personalize a memorial service or funeral service is much the same. The plan may consist of simple, brief notes or a detailed set of directions. With so many choices and options, the value of preplanning becomes evident. No one better understands your wishes than you. Meeting with a funeral director who specializes in cremation services allows you to collect information on options and costs, and to record your wishes for your family to refer to later. You may even want to pre-pay your final expenses as a way of relieving your family from this burden and saving money. There are many good reasons why thoughtful families are beginning to strongly consider cremation. Let an informed funeral professional with experience and special interest in cremation make suggestions as to your options and choices.
The reasons for preferring cremation are varied. If you are interested in learning more, then this article is for you.
Immediate cremation Those preferring to have no services or gathering can arrange for removal of the deceased and immediate cremation. You will want to review cost, administrative requirements, and other details with your funeral director. Many families who choose direct cremation later regret the decision because it ignores their need for closure. Participating in arrangements, viewing the body, and meeting in a formal or informal setting with supportive friends and family are meaningful parts of a ritual, like baptisms and weddings, that help us understand and cope with loss.

Adding a storage shed outside of your home seems like a simple enough task but some planning ahead of time will help you get the most out of this worthwhile addition. If you are looking for a workshop as well, there are a number of factors you need to consider. Where you put the shed on your block also requires some thought. Find out more about the right shed and its location here.
Sheds If you plan to use the garden shed as a workshop as well as for storage, it’s well worth considering a model with greater wall height. This will cost more initially but a few bumps on the head will make you wish you’d spent that little bit extra. You will also require ventilation and storage space. Some manufacturers have a range of workbenches to suit their sheds, as well as shelving and pegboard style storage. Always select the biggest you can afford and the smallest that will do the job for you? Most people recommend looking at a shed size 10 to 20 per cent larger than your current needs dictate. Once the garden shed is there, you’ll always find something extra to put inside it. Natural light can also be important. Will you fit windows, skylights or translucent roofing panels? If you’ll be storing expensive tools or sporting equipment you’ll need security. Make sure any windows and doors you choose are lockable. Do you want to hide it or make a feature of it? A good quality timber garden shed can actually add value to your home and be used as an attractive feature in your garden.
be all that’s necessary if you just want to store some sporting goods or lawn tools. Planned and designed properly, such a cupboard could fit neatly and inconspicuously along the side of the house, or in the corner of your yard. Similarly, a bench with storage built in beneath the seat can solve your storage problems on the back porch. Large bulky pieces of sporting equipment such as surfboards or kayaks can be suspended from a garage or carport roof or hung on hooks along a side wall. Choosing the site Think about the position of the shed in your garden. Is it located for convenient access? Will you be able to get around it during assembly? Will it be easily concealed or is it in the right place to work as a feature? Is the area where the shed is to go likely to be affected by storm runoff or damp ground? If you answered yes to either question, the floor should be raised above ground level. If pouring a concrete floor, you must ensure the site where your shed is to be assembled is level and flat. Sheds built on unleveled sites can end up with gaps between panels, poorly operating doors, water leaks and other problems. On sloping sites, stumps or piers with bearers and joists on top may be a better option. Check that any doors or windows are positioned to suit the site where you want to put the shed. Can you get the mower around the corner and into the door? Sliding doors usually create a wider aperture, handy for bulky equipment. Some manufacturers allow you to customize their basic designs by changing the position of these features prior to manufacture and delivery. Beware as later modifications can void your warranty.
Where you put the shed on your block also requires some thought. Find out more about the right shed and its location here.

Fall Yard Cleanup & Lawn Maintenance Summer might be drawing to a close, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to put away your lawn and garden work ethic. If you want a vibrant and healthy lawn and garden in the spring, there is plenty of lawn maintenance left to do before winter arrives. Preparing your lawn and garden for winter will give you less yard work to do once the weather warms. Here are some things you can do to get ahead of the game this fall. Step 1: Keep Up on Lawn Maintenance Keep mowing your lawn right up until the first frost, but keep the grass length longer than 2½” throughout the fall season. When you mow for the last time, use a mulching mower. The mulch will keep as much nitrogen as possible in the soil over the winter and into the spring. Don’t forget to check your lawn for weeds. Use a dandelion weeder to pop them out of the soil, and they won’t return in the spring. As leaves collect on your lawn, rake them regularly to keep your grass healthy. Leaves can smother and kill the grass if left on your lawn. Rake up as many leaves as possible and bag them for disposal or you can also shred them and spread on the lawn as compost. Pruning is a vital part of fall yard clean up and maintenance. Prune any dead, diseased or out-of-control branches from trees and shrubs. Use a handsaw to saw off branches that are dead, infested with insects or disease, or that have grown too close to power lines and pose a safety threat. Bypass loppers work well for smaller branches. Always cut away from yourself so the branch does not fall toward you. Safety Alerts! Always keep ladders, tools, equipment and yourself at least 10’ away from any overhead power lines. Make sure to wear safety goggles when working with a handsaw or loppers. Observe basic ladder safety procedures to avoid serious injury from a fall. Invest in an adjustable ladder stabilizer that attaches to the ladder and braces onto the roof. Water your trees and shrubs deeply one last time before winter, paying special attention to any newly planted foliage. And, don’t forget to bring your potted plants inside when overnight temperatures dip below 50ºF. Spray potted plants with a garden hose to clean off dirt and wash away pests before you bring them in. After the first frost, cut back perennial growth to just a few inches above the ground using a sharp bypass pruner, garden shears or scissors. Throughout the winter, leave the stems above ground to protect the crown. The crown is the part of the plant at ground level where the stem meets the roots. Make sure you thoroughly pick up any plant parts you cut back and any other plant debris that has died and fallen off. Remove any weeds and other garden debris as well, disposing of it in yard refuse bags. Leaving this organic matter in your garden could bring disease, insects and rodent infestation, as they are all attracted to decaying vegetation.
HOW TO DO…
for the fall planting season. As you work with bulbs and tubers, squeeze them to find the healthiest ones. A good bulb or tuber will feel firm to the touch. Throw away any spongy ones. Use a blanket of compost or mulch several inches thick to cover your newly planted bulbs during the winter months. Fall is also the best time to plant cool-season grasses. Varieties such as perennial rye, bluegrass and fescue do well this time of year for filling bare spots. Overseed bare areas to allow seeds to germinate. Step 4: Fertilize Your Lawn and Garden It’s important to fertilize before the first frost. Experts at your local True Value hardware store can fill you in on everything you need to know about lawn fertilization, including how to find the right fall fertilizer for your grass or flowerbeds. They will probably recommend a fertilizer designed for fall use. These fertilizers have a high potassium content, which helps the lawn resist disease and drought, and better equips it for the winter months. Load your spreader over the sidewalk or driveway to prevent spills that can damage vegetation and apply the fertilizer evenly over the entire lawn or flowerbed. Take care not to fertilize roses, however, because this discourages winter growth and makes your roses more vulnerable to extreme temperatures and conditions. Step 5: Prepare Your Deck or Patio Wintry conditions can be hard on decks and patios, and any furniture on them. Remove patio furniture and store it in the garage or wherever there’s space. If that’s not an option, invest in furniture covers that are made to withstand the harsh winter weather. Before you store or cover anything, clean your furniture properly. Wipe each piece with damp cloths and dry with towels. Remove cushions and pillows and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Use a broom to sweep away leaves, needles and other debris from your deck and between the boards. You can remove mildew with a solution of 3 quarts water, 1 quart oxygen bleach and ¼-cup ammonia-free liquid dishwasher detergent. Add this solution to a garden sprayer and apply liberally to the deck’s surface. Let the mixture set for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Preparing your lawn and garden for winter will give you less yard work to do once the weather warms.
Step 2: Dethatch and Aerate Your Lawn Thatch builds up when grass clippings are not chopped finely enough with a mulching mower or if excessive clippings are not removed after cutting. To prevent thatch from accumulating, rake your lawn after mowing, and especially at the end of the growing season. If you’ve got thatch buildup, you might need to dethatch. You should dethatch if thatch is more than ½” thick. Use an iron rake or a thatch rake (also known as a scrake ) to cut through and rake off thatch. This will also scarify the surface. For large lawns, you may want to consider renting a walk-behind dethatching machine. Lawn aeration in the fall will give you healthy grass in the spring. Aerating allows for greater movement of water, fertilizer and air. It also increases the speed of mulch decomposition and encourages deep root growth, so be sure to aerate before applying fertilizer. You can aerate your lawn with a hand cultivator or a mechanical aerator. For moderately compacted soil in a limited area, systematically prick holes in the soil with a spading or digging fork. Holes should be 2” to 3” apart and 1” to 2” deep. If you’re dealing with a larger lawn area or you want to make the task easier, there are several types of push spike or coring aerators you can rent or purchase. Some models look a little like a manual push mower with spikes or star-shaped wheels instead of blades. Others are designed as attachments that fit behind a power mower. For medium-to-large areas, you’ll want to rent a gas-powered spiking aerator.
Step 6: Clean and Repair Gutters When the bulk of leaves have fallen for the season, check your gutters. Clogged gutters can damage your home and cause basement flooding when snow melts, so it’s important to clean your gutters before winter hits. Use a ladder to get onto the roof, and then remove leaves and twigs with gloved hands and/or a large scoop. Place the debris in a trash bag, carefully dropping it to the ground when it’s full. Use a hose to flush out the gutters after you’re done cleaning. With the hose running, you’ll also find any leaks that need to be repaired. You can easily patch a leaky gutter yourself. Scrub the inside of the gutter around the hole with steel wool. With metal snips, cut a patch of metal flashing that is slightly larger than the hole. Use a putty knife to coat the back of the metal patch with asphalt flashing cement or gutter patch and press into place. Smooth any adhesive that oozes out with gloved hands. Step 7: Care for Tools At the end of the season, disconnect and drain garden hoses, and store them inside before the onset of winter. After you turn off the water supply at the shutoff valve inside the house, open the outdoor spigot to drain any remaining water from the line. Empty the gas from your lawn mower’s tank. Sharpen or replace blades on tools that cut or dig. Hone and maintain the sharp edges of all cutting tools with a medium-grit sharpening stone. Safety Alerts! Wear heavy gloves when cleaning or sharpening sharp cutting tools. Wear goggles when using a wire brush to remove rust and dirt. If your trimmer has a serrated blade, do not attempt to sharpen it. Use a wire brush to remove surface rust and dirt. Wipe down the metal with light oil to protect it from corrosion. Check your tools’handles for any splinters, breaks and cracks. Smooth weathered, rough wooden handles with a medium-grit emery cloth. Wipe a dry handle down with a heavy coat of linseed oil to protect the wood over the winter months. That’s it! You’re done with your fall clean up, and your lawn and garden are ready for winter.”
Step 3: Plant in the Fall for Spring Blooms For the best spring bloom of your garden, start planting bulbs now. Many common bulbs can be planted in fall, including tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. Tubers such as daylilies and dahlias are also popular choices
Helpful Tips
1. Lawn aeration is generally easier to do when the soil is moist, but it won’t work as well if the ground is wet. Although aerating can be done any time of year, it’s best to do it in the fall after dethatching or after a thorough raking.
2. If you don’t plan on grilling during the winter, you may also want to cover your grill or store it out of the elements.

These days, buying a home means more than just looking at the structure. Buying a home now means talking to the builder as carefully as you shop for a home. Home buyers need to know the home they’re buying — whether it be a house, condo or custom build home — is a good quality home built by a reputable builder. A local builders association is a good place to start to obtain a list of builders who construct homes in your area. Other good places to find information are in the classified section of the local newspaper, Internet and radio ads. Looking through these sources of information can provide information such as types of homes, locations and cost. Local real estate agents, friends and relatives can also help provide this information. Another way to gather information is to drive around and look at subdivisions and houses that are being built. Next, make a list of the information you have gathered. Along with that, include a list of questions to ask others about the builder, and to ask he builder themselves. A good way to get the answers from homeowners is to drive around the areas of interest on weekends or evenings when current residents may be outside exercising or doing outdoor chores. Ask builders for the addresses of some of the work they have done so you can visit them in person. Visiting these homes and talking with their owners is a good source of information. Taking a notebook along when asking questions of builders or homeowners is a good way to keep all the information in one place for future reference.
Some questions to ask builders are: • How long has your company been in business? • Who do you contact for customer service after the sale is complete? • Who is responsible for correcting problems with major appliances? • Does the builder use state-of-the-art energy features? • Take detailed notes on the information you receive. When you find a home you want to examine, take notes on a number of features. The quality of cabinetry, carpeting, trimwork and paint are important features of a home. Take into consideration the design of the home as well when looking to buy. • Are there enough bedrooms and bathrooms? • Is there enough storage space? • Is there enough extra space for particular hobbies or an office or exercise room? • Is the lawn large or small enough? Neighborhood associations are also a key factor to buying a home. If the neighborhood has one, get a list of their rules. • Do they allow fences? • Do they allow boats or campers to be parked at the house? Service contracts are another important key in buying a home. A builder will typically make two service calls, the first within one to four months after moving in, and the second around the 11th month just before warranties on workmanship and materials expire. Buying a home is a costly move that should be done with patience and caution, making sure all the important questions are asked before the deal is complete.
Home buyers need to know the home they’re buying — whether it be a house, condo or custom build home — is a good quality home built by a reputable builder.
Some questions to ask homeowners are: • Are you happy with your home? • If you have had any problems, were they fixed promptly and properly? • Would you buy another home from this builder?
What You Should Know...
1. Contact your local builders association. 2. Scan advertising in newspapers, listen to ads on radio and television, search the Internet and talk to builders and friends. Gather all the information possible.
3. Ask real estate agents for their recommendations, and for a list of names of builders. 4. Drive around to communities under construction. 5. Ask for references from current homeowners. 6. Make sure your builder’s license is active. 7. Home buyers need to know if the home they’re buying is a good quality home built by a reputable builder.
8. Drive around and look at subdivisions and houses being built. 9. Taking a notebook along when asking questions of builders or homeowners is a good way to keep all information in one place. 10. A local builders association is a good place to start to obtain a list of builders who construct homes in your area. adno=428223-01
