the tree’s roots from drying out. Make sure the mulch doesn’t touch the tree’s trunk. Due to its high level of moisture, mulch can cause a young tree to weaken and decay when in close proximity. Water your tree daily Since trees should be watered slowly and deeply, you should water the tree for 20-30 minutes with a soaker hose by encircling the tree to saturate the soil. Consider using root feeder to create deeper root development.

stretch out its roots, encouraging it to grow at a quicker pace. Make sure the root ball is level with the soil Once the tree is removed from its container and placed in a freshlydug hole, lay a spade or shovel across the top of the hole. This will help determine if the top of the root ball is level with the soil line. If the root ball is buried too deep or not deep enough, its roots will fail to establish, causing the tree to die within a month of planting. Backfill and hand pack the soil After you backfill the hole with existing soil, lightly handpack the soil around the tree. This will settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Refrain from tamping the soil with your feet as this could cause the tree to slowly sink in the soil and damage the root ball. Retain moisture with mulch Cover the planting hole with a 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch to prevent

Climate plays a deciding role when determining the appropriate planting time for a new tree. Newly planted trees do best when exposed to moderate temperatures and rainfall and they need time to root and acclimatize before the onset of intense heat and dryness of mid-summer or the freezing temperatures of winter. Spring and early fall are generally the best tree planting seasons. Appropriate soil temperature Since warm soil promotes stronger and faster root growth, you should plant a tree when the soil temperature is over 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Dig the right size hole A newly planted tree will do better in a shallow yet wide hole because new roots will grow horizontally from the sides of its root ball. If the hole is expansive enough, the tree will have plenty of room to

JESUS CHRIST
Don’t tell yourself “I’m not that bad.” We deserve the sentence and penalty for sin which is: “everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord.” (II Thess. 1:9) Showing grace, our Lord Jesus Christ paid in full this penalty for us. Otherwise, He endured the cross needlessly. (Galatians 2:21) Read it for yourself. Settle it in your mind. Believe it in your heart.

National Nutrition Month 2018,“Go Further With Food” Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
Whether it’s starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast or fueling before an athletic event, the foods you choose can make a real difference. Preparing your foods to go further by planning meals and snacks in advance can also help reduce food loss and waste. For National Nutrition Month® 2018, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics urges everyone to “Go Further with Food.” Each March, the Academy focuses nationwide attention on healthful eating through National Nutrition Month. “While millions of Americans worry about how to feed their families, the amount of safe food wasted in the United States is on the rise,” says registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Spokesperson Cordialis Msora-Kasago. “By making small changes to the way we
think about eating, we can help reduce food waste.” The Academy communicates healthful eating messages that emphasize balancing food and beverages within an individual’s energy needs, rather than focusing on any one specific food or meal. It is the Academy’s position that improving overall well-being requires a lifelong commitment to healthful lifestyle behaviors, emphasizing lasting and enjoyable eating practices and regular physical activity. “Registered dietitian nutritionists can help all consumers determine the lifestyle balance that provides our bodies with the nutrients we need and still eat the foods we enjoy the most,” Msora-Kasago says. Initiated in 1973 as National Nutrition Week, the public education campaign became a month-long
observance in 1980 in response to growing interest in nutrition. To commemorate the dedication of registered dietitian nutritionists as the leading advocates for advancing the nutritional status of Americans and people around the world, the second Wednesday of March is celebrated as “Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day.” This year’s Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day will be celebrated March 14. As part of National Nutrition Month, the Academy’s website includes articles, recipes, videos and educational resources to spread the message of good nutrition and the importance of an overall healthy lifestyle for people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. Consumers can also follow National Nutrition Month on the Academy’s social media channels including Facebook and Twitter using #National
NutritionMonth. As a founding member of Further with Food Center for Food Loss and Waste Solutions, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is committed to cutting food loss and waste in the United States in half by 2030. Visit furtherwithfood.org/resources/ for great tools and resources.

Your Next Cold Metro Creative Services The next time symptoms of a cold appear could be well worth it to reach for elderberry syrup, lozenges or supplements. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, elderberry, or elder, has been used for centuries to treat various ailments. Elderberry can be applied to the skin to relieve wounds, and it also is effective when taken orally to treat respiratory illnesses like cold and flu. Some evidence suggests that elderberry may help reduce swelling in the mucus membranes and sinuses to help relieve nasal congestion. WebMD says elderberry may help boost the immune system and reduce inflammation to relieve pain throughout the body. Some people also rely on elderberry for allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and as a laxative. Even though elderberry is an all-natural alternative to medicine, its use should be discussed with a doctor to ensure no contraindications.

We all forget names occasionally and misplace keys and wallets. Our brain may not seem as sharp as it once was but not all memory glitches signify the start of a progressive disease like Alzheimer’s. With growing awareness of the importance of having memory disorders diagnosed early, come learn what is normal for our brains as we age, how our memories work, and what we can do if we are concerned for ourselves or others.

Clarity Clinic of SW Wisconsin Last month’s feature, For Your Health, included an overview of Clarity Clinic of SW Wisconsin and the FREE services offered through the clinic. Clarity promotes Reproductive Wellness through medical and educational services that support three stages: Preventative, Predicament and PostChoice/Loss. This month’s focus is on Prevention, which is delivered primarily through Community Education programs. Clarity’s educational health programs are age-appropriate modules available to all schools, private groups and parents/ guardians. Participants are educated on social media risks, their worth and value as a unique individual, and a greater understanding of healthy boundaries and relationships. Clarity has experienced a four-fold increase in the number of presentation requests every year since becoming dedicated to delivering services exclusively in SW Wisconsin. When given the choice, young people are choosing Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) more often than Sexual Risk Reduction (SRR). This trend is increasingly evident across the entire United States. Public and private groups are requesting Clarity’s social media, suicide awareness, and human trafficking modules as the urgency to educate youth on these topics increases. Groups express gratitude for having
someone affirm them as individuals, and for teaching why it is important to define physical, emotional and social boundaries. There are two main approaches to sexual health education. Sexual Risk Reduction (SRR),and Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA). SRR promotes “safe, protected” sex. This approach may contribute to the trend of disposable relationships, and a significant rise in STD/STIs. SRA, the approach held by Clarity Clinic of SW Wisconsin, encourages delayed involvement in sexual activity until a long-term, committed relationship. This approach supports the building of healthy, stable relationships. The Brookings Institute’s Success Sequence research supports the benefits of delaying sexual activity until marriage. The research shows, if these steps are followed in order, there is a 98% chance of avoiding poverty, regardless of initial economic status: 1. Graduating High School 2. Getting a Full-Time Job 3. Getting Married, and then having Children after the age of 21

Eastman Cartwright $500 In Kind to PCA “Yet Again, locally owned Eastman Cartwright contributed $500 in kind for trail projects this summer. Gary Osterholz and Eastman Cartwright really believe in and support The David Canny Rountree Branch Trail. It is why we encourage everyone to buy from locally owned businesses!! They care. Not only do they support us with in kind materials, but Beth Kaiser of Eastman Cartwright has just joined our Volunteer Gardener team!” Commented Dan Flesch, PCA. Eastman Cartwright’s Gary Osterholz noted: “Those trail volunteers out there every week in the spring, summer and fall make a huge difference to our community and we want to continue to encourage that pride in community.” Beth shared: “I have seen those volunteers come and go from Eastman Cartwright for several years now. I signed on as a volunteer because I want to be a part of giving back a couple hours a week to Platteville. And it gives my sister and me the opportunity to do something enjoyable together.” Anyone wanting to become a volunteer may contact: geneweber4@ gmail.com 608-778-6914, Dan or any PCA board member.

SEASONAL HELP WANTED
TAX DAY TUESDAY, APRIL 17 don’t wait to file!
ch o i c e s & d e c i s i o n s Choosing a Paid Tax Return Preparer www.irs.gov
Most tax return preparers provide outstanding service. The IRS urges taxpayers to check their tax return preparer’s qualifications and history. Taxpayers should ask about service fees before they give their records to a preparer. Taxpayers should not use a preparer who will e-file a return using only a pay stub instead of a Form W-2. Taxpayers should review the return and ask questions before signing. A taxpayer is responsible for the information on the tax return, no matter who prepared it.
Types of Paid Preparers Different types of preparers have differing skills, education and expertise. Another important difference is a preparer’s ability to represent taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service.
Credentialed Return Preparers Tax return preparers with unlimited representation rights include these professionals: Attorneys. Attorneys are licensed by state courts, the District of Columbia or their designees, such as the state bar. They have a law degree and passed a bar exam. Attorneys generally have continuing education and professional character standards. Attorneys may offer a range of services. Some attorneys specialize in tax preparation and planning. Certified Public Accountants. CPAs are licensed by state boards of accountancy, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. CPAs must pass the Uniform CPA Examination. They

completed a study in accounting at a college or university and met experience and good character requirements established by their board of accountancy. To maintain an active CPA license, CPAs must comply with ethical and continuing education requirements. CPAs may offer a range of services. Some CPAs specialize in tax preparation and planning. Enrolled Agents. The IRS licenses enrolled agents. They’re subject to a suitability check and have passed a three-part Special Enrollment Exam. The comprehensive exam covers federal tax planning, representation and tax preparation for individuals and businesses. They must complete 72 hours of continuing education every three years. Learn more about the Enrolled Agent Program.
Annual Filing Season Program The IRS recognizes the efforts of noncredentialed return preparers who aspire to a higher level of professionalism. To that end, the IRS issues an Annual Filing Season Program Record of Completion to return preparers who obtain 18 hours of continuing education for a specific tax year. Those hours include a six-hour federal tax law refresher course. Return preparers who participate in the Annual Filing Season Program have limited representation rights. They can only represent
Regional Ledger Specialists, LLC
The IRS has a searchable, sortable public directory on IRS.gov that taxpayers can use to research tax return preparers by name, zip code or credential. The IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers with Credentials and Select Qualifications includes PTIN holders who are: • Credentialed preparers, • Annual Filing Season Program participants, • Enrolled actuaries and • Enrolled retirement plan agents. Taxpayers can research a specific tax professional’s credentials or qualifications. The listings are not an endorsement from the IRS.

clients whose returns they prepared and signed. They can only represent a client before revenue agents, customer service representatives and similar IRS employees, including the Taxpayer Advocate Service. They must participate in the Annual Filing Season Program in both the year they prepare the client’s return and the year they represent that client. If a non-credentialed return preparer doesn’t participate in the Annual Filing Season Program, they may prepare and file federal tax returns, but they can’t represent clients before the IRS.

Hiring a Paid Preparer
There are two types of representation rights, also known as practice rights: unlimited and limited representation. Preparers with unlimited representation rights can represent clients on any matters. That includes audits, payment issues, collection issues and appeals. Those with limited representation rights can only represent clients whose returns they prepared and signed. They can only represent a taxpayer when dealing with revenue agents, customer service representatives, and similar IRS employees, including the Taxpayer Advocate Service.

More than 83 million taxpayers paid someone to prepare their federal tax return in 2017. Generally, anyone who gets paid to prepare or help prepare a federal tax return must have a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). They must sign in the paid preparer's area of the return and give the taxpayer a copy of the return. Anyone who prepares and files 11 or more individual tax returns a year must file electronically.
