Why Breakfast Matters
The Nutritional Value of Fish
mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com
Many adults recall being told “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” when they were youngsters. Though the accuracy of that phrasing hinges on what people eat during their morning meal, scientific evidence supports the notion that breakfast is important to overall health. A 2017 study published in the Journal of Physiology found that eating breakfast decreased the activity of genes involved in insulin resistance and increased the amount of sugar taken up by the cells. Those two results suggest that eating breakfast could help protect against chronic illnesses, including type 2 diabetes. As important as breakfast can be, more important is what individuals eat for breakfast.
mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com
Various cereals contain a significant amount of added sugars, which the Mayo Clinic notes have been linked to a host of adverse health effects, including weight gain, increased triglyceride levels and tooth decay. In 2019, registered dietitian nutritionist Sharon Collison told Time magazine that a morning meal that contains protein, whole grains, healthy fat, and a fruit or vegetable can increase satiety and reduce risk for snacking later in the day. In addition, such a breakfast should provide significant amounts of fiber, vitamins and minerals that can benefit both short- and long-term health.
Fish is an important component of a healthy diet. Compared to many other sources of protein, including beef, pork and chicken, certain varieties of fish are lower in calories per serving size. Plus, fish is an important source of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been linked to heart and brain health. The American Heart Association recommends that people eat at least two servings of fish each week. Knowing how various types of fish stack up when compared to one another can help people decide which fish to include in their diets. The following is some nutritional information on some popular types of fish, courtesy of the United States Department of Agriculture. Nutritional information for raw fish is based on a standard three-ounce serving size.
Haddock: 74 calories, 0.61 grams fat, 16.36 grams protein Halibut: (Atlantic and Pacific): 94 calories, 1.95 grams fat, 17.69 grams protein Mahi mahi: 72 calories, 0.60 grams fat, 15.72 grams protein Ocean perch: 81 calories, 1.38 grams fat, 15.84 grams protein Salmon (farmed): 156 calories, 9.22 grams fat, 16.92 grams protein Tilapia: 81 calories, 1.44 grams fat, 17.07 grams protein Tuna: 93 calories, 0.81 grams fat, 19.89 grams protein
Cod: (Pacific): 70 calories, 0.54 grams fat, 15.22 grams protein Flounder: 78 calories, 1.02 grams fat, 16.02 grams protein
The way fish is prepared can alter its nutritional profile. Baking, grilling or broiling without adding fat are the most healthy ways to prepare fish. Enhance the flavor of fish with fresh herbs and citrus marinades.
More than 50,000 meals a year... ...and increasing!
Now THAT’S Something To Smile About!
Dear Friends & Supporters of Seniors United for Nutrition (the SUN Program/“Meals on Wheels”),
Our Mission Statement: The SUN Program supports and assists seniors 60 and over by providing hot, nutritious meals, home delivered or in a group setting, to promote fellowship and reduce isolation. It also provides health maintenance programming to assist in maintaining independence and involvement in the community.
Every weekday, SUN serves nearly 300 meals to seniors in Iowa and Lafayette counties who rely on the daily meal as well as the daily contact. In the past 2 years, we have seen a large increase in the number of people who need meals delivered to their homes. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the SUN Program has continued to serve the seniors and disabled, providing more than 50,000 meals this past year, our 44th and biggest year ever! And we have accomplished this with little interruption in service—thanks to the heroics of our drivers, site help, office workers, and other volunteers, who last year contributed 10,855 hours of their time to serve meals out of 12 sites in Iowa and Lafayette counties. Funded in part by state and federal sources by way of the Older Americans Act, plus various grants, county levies, and donations from meal recipients, SUN also relies on the generosity of donors like you.
SUN is more than a meal!
• Every SUN meal is nutritionally balanced.
Full menus are provided weekly in local newspapers, and also online at: adrc swwi.org/iowa/services/nutrition.
Watch for our Insert Next Week!
Vincent says , "Santa I have been good."
• Dining-in meal sites provide socialization for seniors.
Diners have contact with friends and community members. Activities are often included at sites. (All sites are currently open again.)
• Delivery of nutritious meals to those at home.
Drivers provide daily contact for the homebound, and can inquire of their wellbeing.
Thank you Lisa Ambort of Potosi WI, for submitting this week's smile photograph!
• Keeps seniors living independently and in their own homes.
Now it’s YOUR turn to make us smile... send in your photos TODAY!
Nutritious meals and socialization promote good health and help prevent hospital visits and nursing care.
Bob B. appreciates the daily delivery of every nutritious SUN meal.
Anyone over the age of 60—of any means— may be in need of a nourishing meal, whether homebound, rehabilitating from surgery, or unable to drive.
Make sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you would like your photo returned. Please include a brief description or caption for the photograph sent.
Name: _________________________________________________ Address: _______________________________________________ City/State/Zip: __________________________________________ Photo information: ______________________________________ _______________________________________________________
What do we ask of the participant? The current suggested meal donation is $5.50 for dining at the site, and $6.00 for home delivery—a very reasonable price for a full, nutritionally-balanced meal.
And—no senior is ever denied service due to his or her inability to pay.
How you can help...
Jack S. greets his SUN meal drivers with a friendly smile every day.
A few suggested levels of donation are included on the enclosed mail-in card, but any amount you may be able to give will be greatly appreciated! For example, $130 pays for one month of home-delivered meals for one participant at the suggested donation.

Alleviate Everyday Aches and Pains
DECOMPRESSION THERAPY
mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com
Pain occurs for a variety of reasons. Pain may be a byproduct of overuse of a particular part of the body, or it could signal an underlying illness or condition. Sometimes injury is at the heart of aches and pains.
can effectively treat pinched nerves that result from a bulging disc, degenerative disc disease and/or stenosis.
Daily aches and pains may be seen as a normal byproduct of aging, but that does not mean aging individuals should simply accept pain. In fact, daily discomfort can be remedied with some relatively easy techniques.
Dr. Joseph Rosemeyer
Adjusting To Meet Your Needs
Practice good posture. Sitting and standing with optimal posture can help the body feel better. The body is designed to stand in a “neutral” position that stacks the pelvis, head and torso, according to DMC Healthcare. When posture is out of whack, this puts undue stress on muscles, leading to pain. Dropping your head or shoulders also can create unnecessary tension that leads to headaches. Good posture can alleviate this. Exercise more often. Certain pains arise when exercising for the first time or performing a new activity. Allan H. Goldfarb, Ph.D., a professor and exercise physiologist at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, says when you do the same activity again and again, your muscles will start to get used to it and soreness will be reduced. Don’t give up on exercise too soon, but include off days in your routine to give your body time to become more acclimated to increased physical activity.

Get tested. Speak with your doctor if you have chronic pain in one or more areas. Such pain may be a sign of osteoarthritis, an inflammatory condition that is associated with aging. Rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions can cause aches and pains as well, leaving the joints and tendons inflamed and a body with low energy. A doctor can rule out these conditions or help you get the therapy and medications you need. Increase stretching and movement exercises. Incorporate stretching and movement exercises like yoga or tai chi into your daily regimen. These activities slowly stretch areas of the body and can improve range of motion and flexibility over time. These are just a few ways to address common aches and pains. Medical interventions, physical therapy, occupational therapy and ergonomics assessments, and massage therapy also may help to alleviate aches and pains.

Get moving. Lower back pain is common among adults, and most often appears when individuals are in their mid-30s and 40s. Strength training and cardio exercises can remedy this pain because these activities increase blood flow and help build core muscles, which support the spine. Support can alleviate pressure on the discs in the back. Exercising also will build strength in other areas of the body and support joints.

Santa Knows Where the Best Deals Are!
It’s easy for adults to experience a little nostalgia when holiday shopping for their children. The holiday season has long been considered a special time of year, and much of that magic can be traced to the joy kids feel when unwrapping gifts from mom, dad and, of course, Santa Claus. Many parents who now have youngsters at home grew up in the 1990s. When such moms and dads are shopping for holiday gifts this season, they might wonder what was the must-have item for them back when they anxiously awaited the arrival of Christmas morning? According to Insider.com, who worked in conjunction with the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, 1996 was the year of “Tickle Me Elmo.” This ticklish toy was the most sought-after item of the 1996 holiday season, and it was so popular that retailers experienced shortages. Those shortages led to some surprising sales on the secondary market, with figures that will undoubtedly drop some jaws even now, a quarter century after the Tickle Me Elmo craze erupted. Though the Tickle Me Elmo doll retailed for around $30 in 1996, some parents intent on getting their youngsters the most inThe Delightful Gift demand gift that year reportedly (5 oz.) spent more than $1,000 on a single (5.3 oz.)
