Will the Internet kill your free community paper? Did instant coffee kill coffee? New technologies change many things. But not everything. You may tweet, blog, surf, shop, or search online but you continue to read your free community paper. You just proved it.

Readership of free community papers is now higher than paid daily papers, and continues to grow. Rather than being replaced by “instant” media, your local free community paper has become an important part of our neighborhood. The reason, which sometimes is not heard because of all the noise about the Internet, is pretty obvious: your free community paper does what the Internet doesn’t. We promote connections at a local level. Free papers join readers and advertisers in ways digital media doesn’t. In fact, the local content and power of your free paper makes advertising even more effective. We are the number one medium for driving purchases. That’s important in every product category. Including coffee.

God declared thru Paul the apostle that salvation is a rescue, at the expense of His only begotten Son. This is why He demands that we believe the “not” of Paul’s gospel. Adding to what He accomplished only denies what He accomplished, and is unbelief. “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but by His mercy He saved us” (Titus 3:5) His Son died performing the rescue, so don’t try claiming you saved yourself. Hannah and Austin McCourt
Meet Hannah and Austin McCourt THE EVOLUTION OF MR. AND MRS. SANTA CLAUS YF: What are your day jobs? McCourt’s: Together we own and operate Badger Brothers Coffee in Platteville, WI. When we aren’t at the cafe, we are with our beautiful children Charlotte (5) and Lilla (2). YF: How did you come to be known as Santa and Mrs. Claus? McCourt’s: It is something that has evolved each holiday season. I started dressing up for a party at Badger Brothers Coffee a few hundred or so years back. After that, we started to make more and more appearances around town. We have shown up at a 5K race, Platteville Main Street events, the Cuba City Glow Parade, not to mention the countless houses around the world we visit in between. YF: As you reflect on past years, what’s been your biggest surprise as you don your holiday attire? McCourts: It impresses me how willing children and adults of all ages are at allowing themselves to believe
in Santa Claus. This time of year is our favorite and seeing people freak out over Santa and Mrs. Claus is priceless. YF: What’s the highlight of the season for you? McCourts: The Cuba City Glow Parade. Hannah’s mother Bridget Wilson presented us opportunities within the holiday happenings in Cuba City and the big one is the Glow Parade where we have had the privilege of riding in the fire truck for the parade down Main Street looking at all the families and smiling faces is our highlight. That and the cookies. YF: What’s the one thing you wish everyone knew about Santa and Mrs. Claus? McCourts: We are no different than any other parent, uncle, cousin, or child. This is the time of year to make others smile and make family warm. The only qualifications to being Santa and Mrs. Claus is a little hope, joy, and grace.

Great gifts for beloved seniors By the time they reach senior status, many adults have amassed a ton of stuff along with their irreplaceable knowledge. Come their golden years, grandparents and other aging loved ones probably don’t need much in the way of material possessions, which can make it challenging to find them holiday gifts. Finding great gifts for seniors may take a little more effort, but with these ideas at the ready, it’s likely gift-givers can make this holiday merry for everyone on their shopping lists.
Family photo memories
Many seniors love to talk about their life histories. What better way to be the catalyst for conversation than to create a photo album that chronicles their lives? Photos can be included alongside historical documents, such as old school projects,
military discharge papers, awards, and even genealogical information. Photo puzzles, photo calendars and any home decor with a photo printed on it are variations on this theme.
Assistance gifts
Seniors want to remain as independent as possible. By giving items that help them do just that, you can bring smiles to their faces. One idea is motion-sensing light switches and fixtures. If and when nature calls in the middle of the night, hallways or bathrooms can be illuminated effortlessly. Shower and bathroom grab bars are another idea. These provide extra security and stability when getting in and out of the shower or when using the toilet. For seniors who just need a little extra reach, a grab tool can easily snag packages
from a top shelf or pick up items that may have dropped to the floor, eliminating bending or straining.
Practical technology
Seniors may not be as immersed in technology as young people, but they purchase their share of gadgets and increasingly rely on tech to get through the day. To free up more time for rest and relaxation, invest in an iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum. This simple device will clean floors easily, moving from room to room without the need for a bulky canister or upright vacuum. Consider an easy-to-use tablet, pre-loaded with handy applications. Grandparents can use video chatting to keep in touch with grandchildren living across the country. Easily refill prescription medication with a pharmacy
app just a click away. Stream favorite movies or channels through video streaming sites, like Netflix or Amazon Prime. Tablets tend to be lightweight, portable and user-friendly. Personal care Even independent seniors may benefit from a little extra companionship and assistance when family members are not able to make frequent visits. Hiring a visiting care worker, who can do everything from organizing pills to making dinner to tackling some laundry, can provide the help seniors need with their daily errands. Seniors are a thriving and growing demographic. It may seem challenging to purchase gifts for older loved ones, but with a little know-how, it’s easy to find the right present. mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com

5 tips for wrapping gifts like a pro
mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com
❅ Work in shorter sessions: Rather than trying to wrap all your gifts at once and burning yourself out, make it a fun experience by wrapping 2-3 presents at a time. Add joy to the task by playing your favorite holiday music or turning on a classic movie so it feels more like an exciting tradition than a chore. ❅ Use household items as helpful tools: The neater you can keep your wrapping paper, the sharper itll look as a finished product. Cut an empty cardboard toilet paper roll down the side then use it as a cuff to wrap around your wrapping paper roll to avoid wrinkling. While youre wrapping, an item as simple as a paper clip can make things easier use it to mark the end of the tape on the roll or clip it on to the edge of your wrapping paper roll to keep things neat and tidy.

That way, when it comes time to wrap this seasons gifts, youre not searching for each item individually. ❅ Pick the perfect paper: Shop for a few wrapping paper options that complement one another. This aids the appearance of your assortment of presents under the tree, so they provide an array of colors and styles without clashing.

Happy Tails
Holiday shoppers who are busy making lists and checking them twice should make sure they don’t overlook the family pet. Christmas has gone to the cats and dogs, as a greater number of people include their companion animals when selecting gifts each year. A study by OnePoll conducted by Rover.com, the nation’s largest network of dog sitters and walkers, found that 95 percent of pet owners have bought holiday gifts for their pets. Gifts can range from everyday needs, like food and treats, to more lavish extravagances like spa treatments. Pet owners who plan to get their pets gifts this year may want to consider some of the emerging pet trends as they browse wares and services. The Balance, a business, career and industry information site, says pet industry trends point toward these segments seeing growth.
Natural pet products
Just as people are interested in protecting the health of the planet and their own personal health, so, too, are they extending this concern to companion animals. Natural pet products, which can include natural flea and tick remedies, holistic foods, organic items, and allnatural grooming products, can make great gifts.
Specialty pet services
The American Pet Products Association says the demand for high-end pet grooming and other services is substantial. In addition, personalized training, behavioral consulting, portrait photography, dog sitting, and upscale
spa treatments like pet Reiki and massage are booming.
Mobile pet grooming
Mobile pet grooming has become the norm in many areas. Mobile pet grooming can reduce the potential stress on animals, and tends to be very convenient for customers, particularly seniors and others who have mobility issues. Beyond these growing trends, pet owners have a bevy of other ideas from which to choose. Here are just a few different suggestions: • Tests to detect pets’ DNA and trace breed and ancestry, • Interactive puzzles to keep pets engaged and banish boredom, • Stylish storage baskets for pet toys, • Hidden cat litter or dog crate items that camouflage commonly used pet items, • Heated pet bed for cozy nights and mornings, and • Signature vests, coats and sweaters to look good and remain comfortable. Pet gifts are popular this time of year, ensuring all members of the family have a treat to open.
