March 2, 2017 Gifford “Giff” E. Kidd, age 65, of rural Richland Center died on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Bloomfield Nursing Home in Dodgeville. He was born on February 20, 1952 at the Richland Hospital the son of Myron and Shirley (Mead) Kidd. After graduation from Richland Center High School, Giff joined the U.S. Navy. He proudly served his country for 20 years as an Engineman. He married Peggy Chitwood on August 31, 1974 at Park Street Christian Church. After retiring from the U.S. Navy they settled in Goose Creek, South Carolina. Giff served on the USS Cree 1971-1974, Costal River Squadron One 1974-1977, USS Cannon 1975-76, Naval & Marine Corp Reserve Center 19771980, Naval Diving & Salvage Training Center 1980-1984, USS Frank Cable 19841985, COMNAVSURFLANT DMTT 1985-1986, and SIMACharleston 1986-1990. Giff
loved the hunting and fishing in S.C., so he retired and then was a Game Warden on Base for a few years. He worked in a grain ship yard in Chas., S.C. for a while. Then to Mt. Pleasant as an outboard mechanic, he also started a small outboard mechanic business at home. Heart problems and back surgeries slowed him down, eventually ending up on disability. He loved coon and deer hunting, fishing, and camping with family on Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion. He taught his son and grandson (Josh) how to do those things he loved. He was known as Papa to his grandchildren. Papa loved wrestling and football and followed grandson (Josh) everywhere he could go to watch. Giff wrestled and played football himself and taught Josh a lot. He met so many people who became friends and family. They moved back to Wisconsin in 2006 to a piece of land in the country- had a few beef cattle and enjoyed some farming. His back finally gave out and he ended up in a wheelchair. It was very hard for him to give up a lot of things he loved because of the pain. Peggy helped take care of him but his final stop was Bloomfield Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center by Dodgeville, Wisconsin. He became the Sheriff and kept everyone guessing _______. He absolutely loved it there and they loved him and took wonderful care of him till the e nd. Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Peggy

local foods movement is a permanent and mainstream trend. In 2014, the National Restaurant Association found the desire for local foods dominated its “Top Food Trends.” The most in-demands foods include locally sourced meats and seafood as well as locally sourced produce. Consumers also are interested in farm/estate-branded foods. Some restaurants are even producing “hyper-local” food, or herbs and produce grown right on the property. As the demand for local foods has evolved, so has the term “local foods.” “Local” can be a wide-ranging term that refers to foods produced in a particular town, state or even region. The 2008 Farm Act defines a “locally or regionally produced agricultural food product” as one that is marketed less than 400 miles from its origin. However, a few states have established more stringent rules that indicate “local” constitutes food produced within the borders of a state or within a small perimeter
of the state. The growing preference for locally produced foods is great news for the farmers and small food producers that have long fought for footing among the mega-importers. According to the trade publication Produce Business, even though “local” does not place limits on the size of the farm, the growing desire among consumers to go local is benefitting many small and midsized farms, as consumers are increasingly buying foods grown closer to where they live. In addition to meats, fruits and vegetables, consumers can find many locally made items that expand the potential for farm-to-table. These include, but are not limited to, artisanal cheeses, wines, beer, baked goods, milk and other dairy, and honey. Local, sustainable foods are in demand, helping not only local restaurants and merchants, but also the small and medium farms that service these establishments.

Consumers’ appetites for local foods are growing, and restaurants have taken notice. Today, many local businesses, including farms and restaurants, have mutually exclusive relationships that make it possible for local residents to enjoy nutritious, locally produced meals. According to the market research firm Packaged Facts, local foods generated $11.7 billion in sales in 2014 and will climb to $20.2 billion by 2019. Farmto-table remains a growing trend that benefits farmers, restaurateurs and consumers. This is evidenced by the rising number of farmers markets cropping up in neighborhoods all across the country, as well as the niche offerings by regional food purveyors. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that, in the last 20 years, the number of farmers markets has grown by more than 350 percent. Many consumers are now choosing “local” for dining at home and when dining out, and this is making a major impact on the nation’s food systems. Foodies as well as industry experts predict that the

Farm to Table Businesses Booming
For thousands of years, the people who work in agriculture have fed us and kept our planet growing. While many professions have become obsolete over the years, agriculture is still a vibrant and growing field. Here’s a look at a few career choices available in the world of agriculture. When people think of agriculture they usually think of the farmer. These folks are the life blood of agriculture and their job is an important one. Agriculture is indeed science and can be learned in many ways. While the concepts can be taught in school, there is nothing like getting your hands dirty. Learning to farm is many times passed down by generation. This is not to say that you must be born into it. While many people consider the farmer a person who works with their hands, their minds need to be just as strong. Farming is a true science. If you prefer using your back, there are plenty of jobs on the farm for you. Before our advanced technology, farmers of the past had to know how to do and fix just
about everything. In many ways that still holds true today. Planting and harvesting crop aren’t the only labor based jobs on the farm. There is plenty of work with machinery, animals and good old fashion hard work. An agricultural job that beckons people with a love for animals is that of a veterinarian. This profession is one of the most important jobs in agriculture. As long as there are animals on the farm, there will be a need for veterinarians. A love of animals is a requirement, but so is a large amount of formal education. If you are willing to achieve an advanced education, being a veterinarian might be your calling. Not interested in being veterinarian? There are other animal related careers in the world of agriculture. For example, there are animal nutritionists. The career combines animal behavior, animal nutrition, with chemistry, economics and the processing of their food. This career relies on hard science, so if that is where your skills lie, this might be the agricultural career for you.
Do you like nature but would rather focus on plants than animals? If so, horticulture may be for you. When most people think of horticulture, they think of garden plants and lawn care. While this is a part of horticulture, the field covers much more. Today’s horticulturists work with hard science including plant breeding and genetic engineering. They work with crop production and inspection as well as insect resistance and effects of the climate on plants. Another field you may consider is conservation. While you may not think of this as an agricultural career, it is. People with knowledge and an education in agriculture are often employed by the Fish & Wildlife Service, functioning in national and state parks. There are many career fields in the world of agriculture, some you probably never considered. A career is not limited to farming or ranching, explore your opportunities and determine if a career in agriculture is for you.

On the Farm Repair
Our society has grown in many ways and fortunately continues to grow. But sometimes we forget about the simplest things. Things that happened long ago that changed our lives forever. One area that we probably take for granted is the advancements in farming. Some of them changed how we lived and some of them made our lives much easier. Most of us probably remember Eli Whitney and his cotton gin from history class. In our country’s colonial period we discovered our love of cotton, but found that it was difficult to produce. The difficulty came from the time it took to separate the cotton seeds from the cotton fiber. Eli Whitney’s cotton gin changed all that. His invention could clean 1,000 pounds of cotton in the same time it took to clean 5 pounds by hand. The counterpart to Whitney’s cotton gin was the thresher. Whereas Whitney’s’ invention revolutionized the processing of cotton, the thresher did the same for grain. The thresher mechanized the separation of grain
kernels from the straw. An invention that saved the backs of farmers and their livestock was the steam engine. Harnessing the power of steam advanced farming in many ways. Initially steam engines were used to power mills, threshing machines and the above mentioned cotton gin. Later, portable steam engines were created coupled with drive systems. This gave way to self-propelled steam tractors. Many years later, the gasoline powered tractor replaced steam tractors and other steam powered machinery. Steam powered machinery required a heating source, such as coal or wood, as well as someone who knew how to produce just the right amount of steam to operate their machinery. Gasoline powered tractors and other machinery took the guess work out of making your engine come to life. Perhaps the farmer’s best friend was developed after we discovered the power of gasoline, it was the truck.
By the beginning of the 20th century, the truck became the farmer’s best friend and in many ways is still their best friend. No longer did farmers need to rely on their wagon and livestock to haul things. Advancements in farming have never really stopped. The process of feeding our countries continues to evolve. However, in some ways advancement has taken us back to our roots. This would be the organic movement. Other advancements in our society are more recognizable than those mentioned above. However, without these advancements in farming, we would have never survived long enough to create the Internet.

They Changed Farming Forever
Lawn and garden enthusiasts know a handful of items are essential to maintain a healthy landscape. Water, sunshine and the proper nutrients all work in concert to promote a healthy lawn. Although nutritional material is inherent in the soil, many gardeners feel soil must be amended with some sort of fertilizer to give plants a healthy boost. All-natural fertilizers are growing in popularity, and home gardeners have a variety of such products at their disposal. Ambitious homeowners can even create their own all-natural fertilizers from items around the house. Organic fertilizers, or those that are derived from living organisms and not manufactured through chemicals, can provide sufficient nutrients and minerals to grow healthy plants. Bone meal In order to store energy and reach maturity, plants need phosphate. This mineral is released over a long period of time from finely ground rock. However, a faster way to supply it to the landscape is through bone meal. Bone

Nitrogen gives plants the energy to grow. Seaweed, which is actually a type of algae, contains the primary nutrients that plants need in order to thrive, including phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium. It also serves as a food for natural bacteria that break down nutrients into the soil, making them easier for plants to absorb. Worms Earthworms are vital to soil health. They burrow and wiggle around in the dirt, helping to aerate the soil. But the castings, or waste, of the worms also provide valuable nutrients to the soil. The castings contain beneficial microorganisms from the worms’ digestive system that help break down organic matter into a form that plant roots can use. Many gardeners participate in vermicomposting, or farming worms in order to use their castings as fertilizer. Compost Compost can also be used as fertilizer. Gardeners can make their own compost from discarded materials. Compost is one of the most widely used soil continued amendments in on page 7
meal is a mixture of finely and coarsely ground animal bones that are a waste product from meat-processing plants. Adding bone meal to soil is one of the most effective ways to increase phosphorous levels. Manure The waste from herbivores (animals that feed on grass), including rabbits, horses and cows, can make super fertilizers. Some gardeners shy away from manure because they believe it to be an odoriferous, dirty product. The best produced manures are allowed to compost for at least nine months and are mixed with hay or straw. They should not produce an offensive odor and will provide plants with a host of nutrients. Never use manures from meat-eating animals, like dogs, cats or humans. Feces can harbor a lot of bacteria, which can be transfered to the garden soil. Fish and seaweed Improving soil nutrients may be as simple as looking to the ocean or other bodies of water. Fish emulsion, a mixture of ground fish and water, is a good nitrogen source.

Farmers Growing Green With Energy
(NAPSI)—One of the nation’s newest sources of electricity comes from...animal waste? It sounds futuristic, but it’s a reality for farmers like Luke, Mike and Tony Brubaker, who run a herd of 975 dairy cows and 800 young stock. Back in 2009, milk prices were down, so the Brubakers looked into other profit-making opportunities. They soon began converting cow manure, via an on-farm digester machine, into enough electricity to
Census of Agriculture shows that farmers are indeed harnessing the power of renewable energy—more than 57,000 U.S. farms reported producing renewable energy on their farm in 2012. This is more than double the number reported in 2007. If you’ve taken a road trip lately, you’ve likely spotted wind turbines peppering the rural landscape. More than 9,000 U.S. farms house wind turbines, according to the latest Census of Agriculture, in addition to more than 36,000 farms with solar panels. Farmers like Brubaker provide food for a rapidly growing population while working toward continuous improvements—not an easy feat, but a necessary one. It’s also one that Brubaker shares with consumers by hosting tours of his facility and making frequent presentations to students and foreign farm groups. “We’re passionate about sustainability and are always looking at how we can better use the resources on the farm,” Brubaker says. “Growing a crop, feeding it to the animals, making it into milk or food then converting that animal byproduct into energy to power the operation is a complete cycle.”

power 150-200 homes. But they didn’t stop there—solar panels were added atop their heifer barn and broiler house to create additional thousands of kilowatts of electricity every month. Around the country, farmers are harnessing alternative energy sources, including wind, sun, water and energy crops, in addition to providing resources for renewable energy through ethanol and biodiesel. These technologies not only benefit the environment, they also allow farmers to realize cost savings that can be passed down to customers. Every five years, USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) conducts the Census of Agriculture to paint the most accurate picture of farming today. Data from the latest census, released in 2014, reveal that farmers are on the leading edge of adopting renewable energy technology. The USDA administers programs to help farmers participate in renewable energy production, which is how Brubaker began. The Agriculture Act of 2014 offers local grants for farmers and rural businesses to develop and improve renewable energy sources. And the latest

vegetable gardens. Yard refuse, fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds, and other items can be added to a compost pile. Natural bacteria will slowly break down these materials into a product dubbed “black gold.” Compost can be mixed into soil before planting and used as a dressing after plants have been established. Gardeners can experiment with different ratios of fertilizer to create a mix that enhances the soil. Test the soil to determine which, if any, nutrients the soil is lacking so the fertilizer can be adjusted accordingly.
