John Allen ‘Al’ Halink, 87, of Richland Center died Monday, May 30, 2022, at Schmitt Woodland Hills. He was born on April 15, 1935, in Richland Center the son of John and Ella (Dalberg) Halink. Al attended Berger School through the 8th grade and graduated from Richland Center High School in 1953. In high school he enjoyed playing the clarinet. Al worked for a local grocery while he was in school and his ambition was rewarded when a competing grocer doubled his pay, this sparked a lifetime of reckless motivation. Al was united in marriage to Janice Turnipseed on December 1, 1962, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Boaz and she preceded him in death in 2000. Al and Janice had many foster children and farmed together in the Boaz area, being named the Outstanding Farmers in 1965. In his middle years, he enjoyed snowmobiling, water skiing, deer hunting, attending night school and teaching his children to play softball and show cattle. After he sold the cows, Al enjoyed crop farming and playing cards around Richland County where he met his friend of 22 years, Marie Rakow. Al and Marie traveled, played cards and took care of each other until the end. Al was a motivated, no-nonsense man who made the decisions, loved to improve his farm, and take care of his family. Some of his favorite sayings were, ‘Work is fun,’ ‘Work together until the work is done,’ and ‘Appreciate your neighbor that helps you and help back.’ Al is survived by his children: Jackson Halink of Madison, Bill Halink of Boaz, Dale Halink of Boaz, Gail Hoffman of Boaz; Two grandchildren: Kristen Halink, Kaylee Halink; Special friend: Marie Rakow of Richland Center; Sister: Ethelyn Marshall of Richland Center, Sisters-in-law: Bev Turnipseed of Elroy, Betty Turnipseed of Rhinelander; Other relatives and friends. The family suggests memorials in Al’s name be directed to the Richland Center High School Band, Clarinet Department.
