OBITUARIES Ann Scholl Ann Scholl died abruptly of a cancer that had gone undetected until two weeks before her death on December 19, 2021. She was 80 years old. Ann was born on May 11, 1941, in Taunton, Massachusetts. Her mother, Martha Foster Bowman, was a home economics teacher and a masterful cook. Her father, Walter Bowman Jr. was a chemistry teacher who had segued into the profession of high school principal. Her grandfather, Walter Bowman, was a lobsterman until he got old, then he became a scalloper. He fished until he was 78 years old. He had a big boathouse with a railroad track running down into Aucoot Cove across Buzzards Bay from Cape Cod. As Walter the elder retired, Walter Jr. developed a consuming sideline. He acquired a fleet of legendary Herreshoffs – small oceanracing sailboats. To hear Ann tell it, the fleet was maintained by her and her brother, Walter III. Scraping barnacles, splicing rope, varnishing and painting in that cold dimly lit boathouse filled Ann’s Christmas holidays until it was time to troop over to granddaddy’s bright warm house for Christmas Eve dinner prepared by Ann’s mom. They did not send out for pizza. Fortunately, Martha’s good cooking gene was passed down to both Ann and her brother. So what did Ann get out of her mom’s and dad’s passions? Well, a mastery of cooking, a mastery of tools, a great sense of how things work, and terrific manual dexterity. Anybody who saw Ann knit, chew gum, scratch her head and talk all at the same time knows how deft she was. And she became a very skilled sailor. By the time she was 12 years old, she, her brother and her dad would sail single-handed, three Herreshoffs across Buzzard’s Bay, through Woods Hole to Martha’s Vineyard, where their rich customers took charge of the crafty little crafts for the summer. Don’t wring your hands over her dad’s negligence of his children’s safety – he was the kind of man who would have memorized the tide schedule of Woods Hole. He had his act together. And so, so did Ann have her act together. In our 33 years of marriage, she was right oftener than I. Those of us who knew and loved Ann all knew how sound her judgement was. She delivered her advice softly, mostly unless the situation was dire enough to break the glass and pull the alarm. She was up to that task, should it be necessary. Believe me. Ann’s personality fused two traits that don’t often go together: A deep regard for the wellbeing and worth of others, coupled with a razor-sharp wit that was often merciless. It was always intriguing to see how she managed this conflict of her two competing sensibilities. She saved her meanness for public figures. With people she knew she was much more supportive. When I was feeling wicked and mean it was fun to watch television with her. Oh boy. Ann took a BA in French Literature at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine in 1962. She taught middle school French in Lynn, Massachusetts, Reading, Massachusetts and some other school district I don’t remember. She was courted in St. Petersburg, Florida by an older man, Evans Barnett, a Widower from Boscobel, Wisconsin. That’s how Ann got to Southwest Wisconsin, which she loved immediately, winters and all. Ann became a part of the numerous, talented Barnett clan. After a good 8 years together, Evans died. Ann and Stan met two years after Evans’ death. Long before they were

married, she made herself part of Scholl Orchards. Ann could prune, pick, plant apples and gossip with the best of them on the packing line. She was part of the Scholl family before Stan got around to popping the question. They were married on September 26, 1987. Ann and Stan, and the pastoral team of April Stedfeldt and Bruce Thomas sang parts in the Lutheran marriage service. It was an auspicious start to their life together. There was a full moon, the night was mild, the wind fragrant. The whole wedding party sat around outdoors till 11:00 in the moonlight. Bowmans and Fosters from Massachusetts, Reads from Milwaukee, Barnetts from all around, and Scholls from all around. They didn’t need anything with which to set up housekeeping. They didn’t want gifts. They wanted a potluck. Everybody brought what they did best. Their best was very, very good. As was Ann and Stan’s life together. Stan wishes he could say they lived happily ever after, but 33 years is what we got, since life is actually not a fairy tale. We are, all of us, only human. Stan had the great good luck to be briefly married to one of God’s better children, Ann. Ann is survived by her husband Stan, sister-in-law, Rose Bowman, Walter III’s widow, and their two children Andrea and Michael, and Ann’s cousin, Philip Foster, Stan’s brothers, Norman, Dennis and Philip, their wives and their children and grandchildren. A memorial service for Ann will be held on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 11:00 AM, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Richland Center. After the service half of Ann’s ashes will be scattered at the orchard. The other half will be scattered over Aucoot Cove, in Mattapoisett, late in June (date to be finalized later). The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the family with their arrangements.

Sharon is survived by her husband William Hatch, her daughter Wendy Wolfe of Portland, OR and two sons: Craig Wolfe(Misty) of Mobile, AL, and Gary Wolfe of the Tri-Cities, WA, her two sisters Pat Heinrich (Don) of Sturgeon Bay, WI, and Monica Bealhen of Jefferson, WI, her 5 grandchildren Ben Abbott, Ross Wolfe, Amanda Wolfe, Travis Wolfe and CJ Wolfe, as well as seven great-grandchildren. Will the Internet kill your free community paper? Did instant coffee kill coffee? New technologies change many things. But not everything. You may tweet, blog, surf, shop, or search online but you continue to read your free community paper. You just proved it. Readership of free community papers is now higher than paid daily papers, and continues to grow. Rather than being replaced by “instant” media, your local free community paper has become an important part of our neighborhood. The reason, which sometimes is not heard because of all the noise about the Internet, is pretty obvious: your free community paper does what the Internet doesn’t. We promote connections at a local level. Free papers join readers and advertisers in ways digital media doesn’t. In fact, the local content and power of your free paper makes advertising even more effective. We are the number one medium for driving purchases. That’s important in every product category. Including coffee.
