Sustainable Family Meals from Farm to Table SOIL CONSERVATION
Much time is often spent planning and preparing family meals, from choosing recipes to gathering ingredients and working in the kitchen. However, where that food actually comes from and how it’s made is an oftenoverlooked part of food preparation. Next time you lay out a weekly menu that includes recipes like this Bone-In Prime Rib, keep sustainability in mind by considering the practices put in place by America’s farmers. For example, the corn industry’s evolution in sustainability along with its documented environmental, economic and social improvements over the last several decades points to farmer’s willingness to embrace change.
Healthy soils are the foundation of agriculture production and why corn farmers are committed to leaving land in better shape than they found it. Adoptions in conservation tillage and other soil conservation strategies have contributed to a reduction in erosion.
WATER STEWARDSHIP Farmers recognize the invaluable role water plays in raising crops each year. They also know they must actively protect this resource for the benefit of their crops, their communities and the planet.
ECOSYSTEM RESILIENCE
With approximately 90 million acres planted annually, corn is grown in a variety of ecosystems. Supporting the health of those ecosystems requires active attention from farmers, who respond by using integrated pest management techniques, establishing wildlife The family farm belonging to Nathan and Nicki habitats on their lands and more. The challenges climate change poses to agriculture Climate change poses an array of challenges. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes that the impacts of climate change on various sectors of society are interrelated, a connection that mirrors the ripple effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The human health crisis that arose during the pandemic affected all aspects of life, as illnesses limited worker productivity, thus affecting the global supply chain, including the availability of food. Scientists warn that a similar scenario could play out as a result of climate change. The agricultural sector could face considerable challenges in the years to come. The Fourth National Climate Assessment is a governmentmandated report that must be delivered to the United States Congress once every four years. Among the many aims of the report are to provide an analysis of the effects of global changes on the natural environment and agriculture. The report also must project major trends for the next 25 to 100 years. The most recent report, delivered in 2018, noted that changing precipitation patterns could intensify in the coming years, leading to more intense periods of heavy rain and longer dry periods. Those shifting patterns and other changes could lead to an increase in conditions and weather events that pose unique challenges to the agricultural sector.

ability to get food from their farms to stores and, ultimately, consumers’ dinner tables. Drought: The National Integrated Drought Information System reports that the primary direct economic impact of drought in the agricultural sector is crop failure and pasture losses. The Government of Canada notes that areas of western Canada are already experiencing frequent and severe droughts, and scientists expect other areas of the country to be affected by drought more often in the years to come. The same goes for the United States, which the UCS notes has already dealt with severe drought in California, the Great Plains and the midwest. Depleted water supplies are a byproduct of drought, and such depletion
can take a toll on crops and livestock. Economics: The effects of climate change on crops and livestock may force farmers to change the nature of their farms. The UCS notes that farmers may be forced to choose crop varieties and animal breeds that are suited to the new conditions sparked by climate change. Going in a new direction could force farmers to make potentially costly investments in machinery and other changes as they make the transition. Climate change will pose unique challenges to the agricultural sector that could force farmers to make some difficult decisions in the years ahead. mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com

Flooding: The Union of Concerned Scientists notes that many agricultural regions of the United States have already experienced increased flooding. The effects of flooding on the agricultural sector are often devastating and include accelerated soil erosion, water pollution and damage to infrastructure that challenges farmers’

How to involve more young people in agriculture The agricultural industry will undergo exciting changes as it looks to overcome developing challenges in the decades ahead. Technology will continue to play a pivotal role in the agricultural sector, making agriculture an evolving and exciting career path for young professionals. Much has been made of projections that suggest the world population is increasingly looking to urban areas to call home. Though data from the United Nations indicates urban areas could grow by 2.5 billion people by 2050, more recent UN data indicates that 90 percent of that increase will take place in Asia and Africa. All told, estimates indicate that rural areas will remain home to 3.1 billion people by 2050. A sizable rural population and the challenges climate change and population growth will present underscores how important the agricultural sector will be in the coming decades. That means there should be plenty of opportunities for young people to make
an impact, especially if more efforts are made to encourage them to consider careers in agriculture. Encourage agriculture-based curriculum. After recognizing that the majority of Kenyan students had no access to farming training and education, the organization Farm Africa initiated a program to make agriculture more accessible to students. Students who participated learned about everything from keeping livestock to marketing produce for global markets. Similar programs can be encouraged in developed countries where opportunities in the field of agriculture figure to increase in the years to come. Emphasize technological advancements in the field. Modern young people are growing up with technology all around them, but few may be aware of the vital role technology plays in the agricultural sector. Young people’s ears may perk up upon hearing terms like “robotics”
technologies are now a big part of life on the farm. Recognition of that may compel more young people to pursue careers in agriculture. H ighlight the challenges ahead and how agricultural professionals can help overcome them. UN projections indicate the global population will grow by more than two billion people by 2050. Finding a way to feed all of those people in the face of climate change will be no small task, but it’s a task that will require dedicated agricultural professionals. Educators and parents can emphasize these challenges when speaking to young people about a career in the agricultural sector, noting that such careers will present real opportunities to make a difference. Young people looking for rewarding careers in an exciting, ever-evolving field can be encouraged to consider the agricultural sector. mcg.metrocreativeconnection.com

Career paths in agriculture
Agricultural engineer: Agricultural engineers employ engineering principles to solve issues related to agricultural production. An agricultural engineer may design facilities or machinery or develop solutions to address problems related to irrigation and soil conservation, among other projects. Students interested in a career as an agricultural engineer can expect to study mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer engineering, and, of course, engineering analysis and design as they pursue their degrees. Another Record Year for State Ag Exports in 2021 Wisconsin Ag Connection - www.wisconsinagconnection.com
Wisconsin’s agribusiness sector continues to make a big impact on the rest of the world. The latest figures from the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection shows that farm product exports from Wisconsin reached a record $3.9 billion in 2021; and the best year for shipments abroad since 2013 when sales reached $3.7 billion. “Despite some recent years of trade disruptions and supply chain challenges, I am proud of how Wisconsin’s agriculture industry has remained resilient and competitive in providing high-quality agricultural products to the world,” said State Agriculture Secretary Randy Romanski. “This record-breaking year presents an incredible opportunity and the momentum needed to strengthen our state as a leader for agricultural exports.
During 2020, Wisconsin ranked 13th among U.S. states in food, forestry, and agricultural exports.

The basics of raising pigs Many people subscribe to the notion that “everything is better with bacon.” Imagine being able to control the quality and flavor of pork products, and knowing just what went into producing delicious bacon?
selecting pig breeds for a pig farm startup, these are popular as lean-meat producers and shouldn’t be hard to find: Yorkshire, DurocJersey, Berkshire, Hampshire, Poland-China, Chester White and Tamworth. Choose sows (females) or barrows (castrated males) for the best-tasting meat. Also, keep in mind that pigs are social animals, and even though the average family will do just fine with one pig’s worth of meat, pigs do better if raised in pairs or more.
In an era of growing uncertainty about commercially produced food, many agriculturally inclined people are raising livestock right on their properties, and smallscale pig farms can be a successful venture. Despite pigs’ reputation as dirty animals, the animal resource PetHelpful indicates they are actually one of the cleanest farm animals. Pigs tend to wallow in mud only if they do not have proper shade and a clean, steady water supply to regulate their body temperature. Furthermore, giving pigs plenty of space to roam will enable them to keep dry, clean and cool.
In an era of growing uncertainty about commercially produced food, many agriculturally inclined people are raising livestock right on their properties, and smallscale pig farms can be a successful venture.
Pens should be large enough so pigs can sleep and eat on one end and use the other end for soiling. Pigs also are intelligent animals that will adapt to routine. This means it may be easier to care for pigs than some other farm animals.
they do not need to live on an expansive farm. Many pigs can live quite well on an acre if their pen and foraging areas are rotated periodically. Data from the past 50 years shows that today’s pig farms use less land and other resources to produce one pound of pork, according to the National Pork Board. Therefore, raising pigs can be a sustainable undertaking.
Even though pigs can grow to be quite large,
According to Mother Earth News, when
Pigs need a varied diet to thrive. Diets should include grain, milk, fruits, vegetables, and greens from pasture. Experts suggest novices ask a veterinarian or another pig farmer about feeding. A family garden or bartering with other families nearby for food materials can keep feeding costs minimal. Many pigs can be butchered by the age of six or seven months. After pigs reach that age, they begin to grow quite large and become a much larger investment of time and money. Pig farming can be a worthwhile venture. Evers: Pandemic Aid Bolstered Farmers, Businesses Wisconsin Ag Connection - www.wisconsinagconnection.com
Though he didn’t use his annual address to the Wisconsin Legislature to bring up many new ideas for agriculture specifically, Gov. Tony Evers did highlight the importance of helping out farmers with federal stimulus dollars during the COVID-19 pandemic. During his fourth State of the State Address on Tuesday evening, the governor
reminded lawmakers that over $1 billion in American Rescue Plan funding was used to support small businesses, farmers, and tourism during the past year. “I directed $100 million to support Wisconsin farmers through our Farm Support Program. In one round alone, we were able to help more than 20,000 farmers, and in more than half of Wisconsin’s 72 counties, our support for farmers through this program exceeded $1 million,” Evers said. State Agriculture Secretary Randy Romanski may have additional comments during a pre-planned conference call with reporters on Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, Evers did say he will be calling the Legislature to meet in a special session to take up his plan to use a portion of the state’s $3.8 billion projected surplus to send a $150 refund to every Wisconsin resident. He further intends to extend the University of Wisconsin’s tuition freeze for one more year.
For All Your Building Needs
He also plans to sign an executive order to create a Blue Ribbon Commission on Veteran Opportunity to develop new, innovative initiatives to support the more than 300,000 veterans who live in the state.

Lawmakers Pledge to Maintain, Expand Crop Insurance in Next Bill Wisconsin Ag Connection - www.wisconsinagconnection.com
The public-private partnership of crop insurance should be maintained and expanded in the 2023 Farm Bill, according to members of Congress who spoke at the industry’s annual conference in California on Monday. “The crop insurance industry plays an essential role in supporting agriculture in my home state and throughout farm country,” said Senator Tina Smith (D-Minn.) Smith joined Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Representative Salud Carbajal (D-Calif.) and Representative Adrian Smith of (R-Neb.) in discussing the critical role crop insurance plays in rural communities. Moran said he decided to run for Congress, in part, to make sure rural communities like his home of Plainville, Kansas, have a bright future. “It is important to recognize the success of rural communities is directly tied to agriculture and the ability for farmers to stay in business is
dependent on a strong Federal crop insurance program,” he said. Carbajal said farmers in his district often tell him they rely on crop insurance. “I can’t tell you how often I hear from the growers in my district how important crop insurance can be to them,” he said. “And we can continue to work to improve and expand the program.” Representative Smith said crop insurance alleviated the blizzard and flooding devastation that took place in Nebraska in 2019. “What you guys work on is so incredibly important not just in my district but across the country,” he said. The members of Congress pledged to maintain and expand crop insurance in the 2023 Farm Bill. The debate over the key legislation will start soon.
“On The Farm’’ “On Farm’’ Tire Service
“I’ll be looking to you for all your advice and input,” said Senator Smith. “As crop insurance agents, you talk with farmers every day and you know better than most what is happening in rural communities across the country.” Moran said critics of crop insurance see it as a program that can be cut to increase spending elsewhere or as a vehicle for unrelated agendas such as environmental regulations. “Instead, the American public should see, like I do, the farm families who are able to withstand a weather disaster and a failed crop and ultimately are able to pass farms and ranches from one generation to the next,” he said. “It is because crop insurance kept them in business.” Carbajal thanked the crop insurance industry for the crucial role it plays in agriculture. As the 2023 Farm Bill debate heats up, he said he wants to hear from the crop insurance industry and the farmers it serves.
