from the director
Dear Readers, In the last issue, I shared how our experiences as customers are shaped before we even interact with a company or product. For example, before you take that first bite at a restaurant, you’ve been influenced by feedback from others, a website or even the parking lot. Here's a story of how an experience can still be good, even when a part of it is bad. When my kids were young, my husband and I took them to a restaurant specializing in home cooking. It was an odd place, located in the suburbs of a busy city, but still trying to have a country, family-friendly feel. It was painted bright colors, sported a porch and even had the word “House” in its name. In addition to a large asphalt parking lot, it was flanked by a manmade pond that attracted ducks and geese of all shapes and sizes. That swampy pond and its inhabitants would entertain our kids while we waited for a table or, if we were lucky enough to get a window seat, distract them from eating their supper altogether. We went to that restaurant more times than I care to recall. It was our first choice when treating our family to a night out. And the food was consistently terrible. While my husband may disagree on the food quality (I think he always ate the same dish—chicken pan pie, probably), I was always disappointed in what I ordered. I worked my way through the entire menu, trying to find something that didn’t offend me. Yet everything was overcooked, too salty, too dry or sometimes just plain unrecognizable. Pulpy green beans, mushy collards, salty chicken and dried up cornbread. I tried it all, with only modest success with the Eggplant Parmesan (yes, at a country-cooking restaurant). However, the incredible sweet tea was bottomless, the waitresses were unbelievably kind and patient, and the owner often visited the dining room, welcoming each family. And, of course, there were the ducks.
“There’s a reason why price isn’t the only factor in choosing a grocery store or a gas station. The experience matters and it’s our job at the library to make yours memorable.”
Our then preschool daughter would ask: “Mom, can we go eat at the ducks with the restaurant?” Even as a kid barely out of diapers, she understood what made the customer experience memorable. We all liked wrapping that crumbly cornbread in a napkin and rushing out to feed the overstuffed and slightly aggressive pond dwellers. We always walked to the car (one of us still hungry!) feeling good about the family time we’d spent together, and knowing we’d be back. Lately, I’ve been thinking and talking a lot about customer experience and what makes customers loyal. There’s a reason why price isn’t the only factor in choosing a grocery store or a gas station. Or why you prefer one online retailer over another when they all sell a similar product. And there’s a reason why you’d return, multiple times, to a restaurant where, on a good day, the food is mediocre. The experience matters and it’s our job at the library to make yours memorable. Thank you for choosing to spend your time using your library. Our goal is for your experience to be consistently exceptional, and I hope you find that to be the case. And, if not, I hope to hear from you.

Featured Staff Diana Keane, Programs and Partnerships Coordinator, Richland Library Main What’s your favorite thing about working at the library? I leave work each day looking forward to coming back. The main reason I love my job is the incredible people it’s brought into my life, from my driven and savvy colleagues to the customers who ask great questions and bring new ideas to our attention. How do you think the library inspires the community? When 94% of Americans think their public library is a “welcoming, friendly place,” you have an incredible opportunity to bring communities together in a trusted, non-contentious environment. Libraries inspire people to treasure the learning and growth of everyone regardless of demographic, rub shoulders with those they might otherwise never notice, and work together to build bridges and solve problems.
How does your job make the library better? I support the outstanding programming dreamed up by our creative team of librarians. Because I work with so many different departments, I have the added fun of helping staff make connections when seeking resources or guidance on their programs. What is your most memorable library experience? There’s no way I could whittle the

Meet Library as Studio. Richland Library will be rolling out a studio concept for the enhancements to library facilities that will take place over the course of the next several years. The studio concept reenvisions the library’s role as a community catalyst for innovative learning, creating and sharing. Richland Library will become an active and adaptive family of locations and studios where individuals can craft and develop skill sets and ideas that will take them far beyond the walls of the library. Based on customer needs and feedback, the library will be exploring the following studio domains: • Arts & Literature • Career Advancement • Education & Growth • Teen Engagement In May, The Literary Vine attendees had the opportunity to share feedback about all of the exciting changes underway, and help plan for the library’s future. Have ideas you’d like to share? Email us at DesignFreely@richlandlibrary.com. Visit www.buildingyourlibrary.com for a timeline for library renovations and reconfigurations!
Fall 2013 – Program Managers Hired The library hired M.B. Kahn to manage the building efforts and help maximize every dollar by enlisting the expertise of those who specialize in construction logistics. Fall 2013 – Design Groups Hired Several design groups were hired to envision the future of library facilities and services— The Boudreaux Group of Columbia; McMillan Pazdan Smith Architecture of Greenville; and Margaret Sullivan Studio of New York. These firms will ensure that the reconfiguration of Main meets our community's needs. Fall 2013 – Community Conversations After approval of the bond in November, the library began community conversations to gather input on the benefits of library services. These efforts will continue throughout planning and implementation of the building program. We welcome your input—share your ideas at DesignFreely@RichlandLibrary.com.
2014 – Richland Library Main Richland Library is continuing its efforts to collaborate with the community to create the libraries of the future. An internal Building Advisory Group and an Outside Expert Group were established, allowing others to lend their expertise to the process. Richland Library remains committed to sharing information on what’s planned and what’s taking shape. March 2014 – Sandhills The library has explored several location options for the new Richland Library Sandhills and is hoping to create a shared facility with another like-minded organization. The new facility will be located outside of the Summit neighborhood but as close to the existing facility as possible. The library hosted a series of tailored, community conversations to further define the outlined specific needs in December.
Late 2014 Richland Library plans to make additional details about the construction timelines available by the end of 2014. The design period would take seven—10 months depending on the scope of the project. 2015 Customers should expect to see the first phase of enhancements and construction at several locations. The first three projects include: Richland Library Main (renovation); Richland Library North Main (renovation); and Richland Library Sandhills (new). 2016 All of the projects outlined in the library’s 2014-2017 Capital Needs Plan should be underway by 2016. Some may already be finished, while others are in construction or just wrapping up the final planning stages.
