from the director
Dear Friends: Am I the only one who feels like the older I get, the faster time passes? A cursory Google search on the topic let me know I am not. As it turns out, there are complex mathematical formulas that describe what I—and many others—are experiencing. Indeed, as we age and our lives become more routine, our knowledge of the world grows and time appears to speed up. The decades feel like years, years like months and so on. This explains why the events of the past year seem like a blur. And it also explains while some of these events—like our son’s first soccer game, a family trip to Williamsburg and my sweet middle child saving her allowance for weeks to buy a longed-for stuffed animal—seemed to slow time down, even if just for a little while. I have other wonderful memories from the year, ones that I share with my coworkers and customers. I won’t forget the look on the faces of the residents of Eastover when they first stepped into their brand new library. Or watching on the big screen with almost 200 other new friends as Josiah Washington, our “library kid,” won big on Jeopardy. And seeing 25 shy and happy kids sitting across the table from their new reading tutors at the beginning of summer, knowing they would go back to school ready to learn in the fall, was amazing.
"I’ve seen first-hand that the library is often a part of the personal and shared memories and stories of a community… We care about helping people look forward and rewrite their personal stories."
Growing up in the Midlands, I’ve seen first-hand that the library is often a part of the personal and shared memories and stories of a community. As the city has grown in the last 20 years and expanded into regions like Sandhills and Ballentine, the library has opened its doors six and seven days a week to accommodate 2.7 million visits a year. We welcome people when they need us most. We create opportunities for customers to make new memories with their families and friends. We care about helping people look forward and rewrite their personal stories. There are so many exciting things on the horizon for our library and our community. Take a few minutes to peruse the pages of this issue of Access, share your copy with a friend, and make plans to stop by and see us before 2013 ends. We want to wish you well and hear your plans for 2014. If you want to know more about our plans and the library’s vision for the future, stop by any of our 11 locations and we’ll gladly talk to you about them. You can also find a snapshot of the things we need to continue to advance our community on our website at RichlandLibrary.com/about or page 5 of this issue. I look forward to seeing you and talking with you soon. Happy holidays.
Warmly, Melanie Huggins, Executive Director

what's happening
NEW CATALOG EXPERIENCE You’ve asked and we’ve listened! Richland Library will unveil a new catalog experience in December. In addition to more user-friendly features for managing your account, customers will also get new tools to help them navigate the thousands of materials available: • Checkout history – Customers can opt-in to have a history list, which includes all items they check out from that point forward, including book, movie and music checkouts. • Saved searches – Customers will be able to save a search and have a weekly or monthly email sent to them containing new titles that match their search.
• Username & passwords – Customers can set up a username for accessing their online account, instead of a library card number. Also, the online catalog allows customers to click a “forgot your password?” link, and the password will be sent to the email address on file. • Share freely! – Customers will have the ability to use social sites for sharing titles.
RICHLANDLIBRARY.COM now offers online registration for events. Sometimes our classes, events or crafts require us to know how many folks are participating. Now you can sign up in your PJs at midnight if you’d like! Just click the orange register button next to events. (Sign up with your library card number, driver’s license or other ID.) You’ll receive an email confirmation and a reminder two days before the event.

Mayte Velasco Nicolas Bilingual Outreach Coordinator Coordinadora de Relaciones Comunitarias If you could trade places with one person for a day, dead or alive, who would it be? It has to be Leonardo da Vinci, a man of “unquenchable curiosity;" the library can fill the need of curiosity. I admire his hunger for knowledge. | Tendría que ser Leonardo da Vinci, un hombre con una ¨curiosidad voraz,¨ la biblioteca puede ayudar a contestar cualquier curiosidad. Siempre he admirado su hambre por el saber. Why did you choose to work in a library? Traditionally, a library has been an unfamiliar place for many members of the Latino community. I want to promote, inform, present or expose the library as a tool that facilitates not just books, but community forums, a Job Center, a Teen Center or a puppet show. | Tradicionalmente, la biblioteca ha sido un lugar desconocido para muchos miembros de la comunidad, la biblioteca me da la oportunidad de promocionar, informar o presentar la biblioteca como una herramienta que facilita, no solamente libros, pero también fórums comunitarios, un centro de trabajo, un centro exclusivamente para adolescentes o una función de marionetas.
How do you think the library inspires the community? One client told me that the library is a “sanctuary.” She always feels welcome. The company of a book, a picture book for her child and a little time on Facebook are the little things that help her relax. | Un cliente dijo un día que la biblioteca era su santuario. La compañía de un libro, un libro infantil o un ratito en facebook son detalles que relajan en un día de locos.
