what’s happening

Amanda Bracken, Associate Richland Library Sandhills What’s your favorite thing about working at the library? I get to interact with all kinds of amazing people, both customers and staff. Every single day, someone has an interesting story to share. Describe life at the library in three words or less. Knowledge is power. If you could trade places with one person for the day, dead or alive, who would it be? As a child, the first book series I remember being completely infatuated with was the Oz series by L. Frank Baum. Every Halloween I would dress as Dorothy Gale and would have given anything to walk in her silver shoes. That’s still the case now as an adult.

How do you think the library inspires the community? One of my favorite things about our library system is that some locations offer free classes to help customers earn their GED. Going back to school to finish that degree takes a lot of courage, and by offering these free classes, I believe the library is able to give our customers that extra encouragement and support they need to succeed. Why did you choose to work in a library? I fell in love with everything about the library and what it represents. My job makes me feel like a crucial part of our community.

When Josiah Washington was four years old, he decided that he wanted to be on Jeopardy. He’d often watch the show and say, “Hey! I want to do that someday!” On August 1, his dream becomes reality when he is one of several young contestants on Jeopardy Kids.

“The Richland Library has impacted my life in so many ways,” Josiah said. “It started out when I was one year old and I came to storytime. From that point on, it evolved into a love of learning and reading.”

When watching the show, Josiah enjoys the geography, pop culture, current events and history categories. Josiah knew that being on the show would be thrilling, but said he did not expect the studio to be so small. Before the August 1 air date, Josiah cannot discuss the details of his appearance, including questions he answered and who won. But the library staff and others who have gotten to know Josiah, his sister Micah, and his parents know that Josiah and his family are already winners. A viewing party is planned for 7 p.m. on August 1 at Richland Library’s Teen Center at Main, 1431 Assembly Street.

Success stories include children reading books on their own for the very first time, struggling readers who improve their accuracy and children overcoming their fear of dogs. Certified Pet Therapy dogs Josh and Nester belong to Warren and Lois Brussee, who are quick to relay that dogs are good listeners, never criticize and make reading aloud a pleasant experience for the children. In fact, studies show a 30 percent improvement in reading fluency after only 10 weeks in programs like this.

“So happy we do this program–this branch is so great!” said Lynn Wright, whose daughter, Katherine, participates. Richland Library currently offers Read to a Dog at Sandhills, Cooper and Main, where children sign up for 15-minutes slots to read to dogs. Want to learn more? Call 929-3434.

any given day; but, when you add the stress of searching for a job into the mix, it seems downright impossible. When I started a new job, my manager gave me a small stuffed elephant as a reminder of that famous quote, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” Achieving balance is not an act or even a series of actions; it is a mindset. To make those bites of elephant a little more palatable, consider these suggestions:

someone else could do? Don’t be afraid to ask for help and allow someone to do it for you! If you are in an active job hunt and money is tight, consider bartering for services. The Business and Job Center can assist by taking away the stress of creating effective, targeted marketing materials for your job search. Resume assistance is always free of charge. Done is Better than Perfect: This is one of my favorite mantras. We run ourselves ragged trying to be the next Martha Stewart or we don’t ever start a project because our expectations are too high. Be realistic; sometimes, having something done is better than waiting for it to be perfect. Steer Your Own Ship: The responsibility for managing what matters to you despite competing demands falls on you; it is not anyone else’s job to tell you when to learn that new computer skill, finish that project, hit the gym, visit the dentist or take your partner out on a date. With that said, we hope you will steer your ship into the Business and Job Center where we can help you devise a job action plan and to
