Proverbs 31 is a scripture that is frequently used on Mother’s Day and in reference to the qualities of a virtuous woman but what does it mean to be a virtuous woman and is the notion of a Proverbs 31 woman applicable in modern society.

Business savvy - makes wise business decisions and invests to gain.

Qualities of a virtuous woman

Charitable - willingly gives to the poor and those in need.

God fearing - she is beautiful inside and out. She is God fearing and his beauty shines though her.

Family orientated - ensures her family are cared for and that their needs are met wanting for nothing.

Self-worth - knows her value and is secure in who she is in God not fearing the future. She is spiritual, capable, intelligent and virtuous. A good wife - trustworthy, comforting, encouraging and only doing good towards her husband. Industrious - hardworking creatively using the materials that she has to create merchandise which she sells to generate a source of income. Keeps her household - ensures that her family is well fed and her household is well kept.

Increases her knowledge - she studies to build herself up spiritually, mentally, physically and she ensures she is fit to undertake her tasks.

Etiquette - she conducts herself with integrity, she is wise, kind, knowledgable, teaches and gives wise counsel. Respected - she is respected by her husband and children who call her blessed. With society glamourising celebrity lifestyles, pushing good character down the wish list and promoting outer beauty and sexual gratification do the qualities of Proverbs 31 remain relevant.

WAS IT A CAT I SAW KATJA NAUHEIMER TALKS ABOUT HER JOURNEY & NEW COLLECTION

#30- rich magazine uk

PHOTOGRAPHER JULIA HAACK FASHION DESIGN KATJA MARINA NAUHEIMER HAIR & MUA SALON LA MAGIA - PFORZHEIM, GERMANY MODEL JUSTINE DOMBROWSKI #31- rich magazine uk

Katja Nauheimer interviewed by YolandaRenée

We got to talk to Katja about herself, her journey and her new collection “WAS IT A CAT I SAW”...

Tell us About Yourself ? I am 25 years old, and I grew up in South Germany. My mum is a tailor and has her own studio in our house, I was always surrounded by sewing machines and she was always trying to convince me to start making up my own clothes but it didn’t work out the way she had hoped for, maybe that was because children tend to the exact opposite of what their parents want them to do. I used to prefer travelling or spend a year abroad in Spain to explore places and learn about myself, which paid off in the end.

When did you decide to take

fashion more seriously as a Fashion Designer? I loved drawing since a child and noticed at 18 years old, the end of High School, that I would love to do something, where I could combine my interest in Art and Culture with Creativity. It was at that point when I decided it would be helpful and in my best interest to learn the handcraft of tailoring to realise that my ideas are in form of fashion. So, I started an internship at a little design studio in Germany to see if it would be something I would enjoy, and after 8 months #32- rich magazine uk

I knew enough to be sure that this was what I wanted to do and this is meant for me, and applied for HS Pforzheim. What made you interested in Fashion? Fashion as a design discipline offers the opportunity to bring your ideas on the human body, which was fascinating to me because every individual adds a personal note and changes the look. This is also the challenge of a being a fashion designer. So, the aim of having done something productive in the end of the day, which get used and gives people a certain feeling for themselves or helps them express themselves fascinates and motivates me. What inspires you to create your Collection/Designs? At the end of studying fashion, I learnt a lot about myself, and that I struggled at times with the feeling of having created just one more random garment piece which looks nice, but has no more sense behind it. So, while researching for my collections, I focused on giving them a certain message behind it and tried to analyse even more, what people are in the

mood for in days of bad news in the media every single day and an overflow of pictures on social media.

So, Tell us about your collection? My degree collection “WAS IT A CAT I SAW”, which stands for the question, how human perception works and is inspired by the very personal aim of finding an own aesthetic as a young designer.

The overflow of pictures in our generation demands for clear and strong, but also sensitive pictures, which is shown in different levels of intensity in the collection. It shouldn’t always be such a negative thing, that most people of our generation do their research on the same Platform. I wanted to show, that, if they think about what they do and combine this research with their own input, they can still get a beautiful outcome with their own design language. My collection was the trial of doing something very special, but only in the details of Outlines or material, that it is still very easy to understand on the first view, but also not getting boring on the second view.

Creative people of our generation are often accused of being too influenced by social media and not able to create their own design languages. Deep research and theoretical examination with the principles and processes of human perception led to the aim, not to work on a specified idea of how the degree collection should look like in the end. It helped to work on finding a new aesthetic a designer for myself.

What have you learnt since you started designing and what advice would you give to another designer like yourself ? I’ve learned to focus and to never give up. There is always a way to push more for my own aims and I have learned about my own limits, physically and psychologically. In terms of advice, I’m still learning and growing, and still need so much advice at my stage, I wouldn’t dare give advice to other

Did you Study Fashion Design? Yes, I studied at HS Pforzheim for 4 years and got my BA degree just 2 months ago. I Extended the usual 3 years to work on Interdisciplinary Projects in Jewellery Design at the university.

people, but I can say work hard, focus and most importantly never ever give up! What does the future hold for you and your designs/ collections? In the future, I would love to enlarge my capability of analysing the society, to be even more able to understand what people need in their daily life and to avoid of just slapping out one garment after another. I am a fan of the small part in the industry, which focuses more on slow fashion, so I’d love to find my place somewhere in there. Where people get to breathe and time to think about what they do.

The role of racial representation

WRITTEN BY YVONNE WALKER

The mass media are the main major sources of information, ideas, norms, values and they are an important part of peoples search for identity. In addition, they also define what it means to be part of a certain class, group and even generation. Magazines, therefore, plays a significant role in the everyday lives of people from all nationalities, class, race and gender. People are highly influenced and affected personally by what they read and look at in magazines, especially fashion magazines. The disproportionate representation of people of colour within magazines influenced the decision to look at race, representation and feminism within the fashion industry. “A racist mass media, many black people are convinced that our lives are not complex, and are therefore unworthy of sophisticated critical analysis and reflection” (Hooks, 1992) The discussion between racism, representation within the fashion industry has been a huge issue discussed for several years, but after all this time can we really say that things have changed. Racism is an ugly part of our society, and itcertainly has no place in the beautiful world of fashion. (KEILLA - LOYOLA MARYMOUNT UNIVERSITY, 2012)

The Oscars of 2015 was described as the whitest since 1998. This statement was made because of the limited representation of people of colour. According to the New York Film Academy, only 12.4 percent of speaking characters from the 2007-2012 top 500 grossing films were portrayed by black actors, while 75.8 percent of these roles were portrayed by white characters. In fact, 40 percent of the top 100 grossing films from 2012 showed black characters as less than 5 percent of the speaking cast. (wakemag.org) It is often difficult for people of colour to see themselves portrayed in a positive way in films. The usual story line will be one where the person of colour will be the first character to die. The media do not portray families of colour as rich and powerful, these families are always portrayed as white. It is the norm that people aspire to be successful and if the only families that are portrayed to be wealthy and successful are white, it indirectly speaks to the young mind of a child of colour that this is not achievable for them. The news media often reports crime in the context of race, rather than saying, a 20 years old man committed a crime, it would say a 20 years old black man committed a crime. This leads one to wonder how news are reported in Africa or the west Indies, as it would be nonsensical to describe

the colour of a person, who committed a crime when the population are of the same race. These types of reporting plant seeds in people’s mind as they link black people with crimes. Many people accept what the media reports as gospel and often do not use their own experience to shape their views but shape their views and perception in accordance to media reporting. An example of this is whilst attending a Diversity Training a picture was shown around the room of a group of 4 young boys in their hoodies standing on the street. The question was asked by the trainer if anyone would be frightened if they saw black youths hanging out on the streets in their neighborhood. The room of about 10 whites and 2 black people responded ‘yes’. The trainer asked if they personally had any negative altecation with black youths they said ‘no’. It transpired that their fear stemmed from negative reporting by the media. The media has the platform to promote the ideals and aspirations of those who are dominantly represented and they do not eagerly want this to change. Dominant representation is regularly used by the media towards women and people of colour. Hegemony is a predominant influence over others and those with the influence shows very little appetite to let it go. #69- rich magazine uk

PRODUCER, ORLANDO “OV” VAUGHN & NEW PROJECT “PINK SKY PARIDISE” St. Louis, MO producer Orlando Vaughn known as OV, dropped a new project, Pink Sky Paradise. Success didn’t come easy for OV, he almost gave up his passion after making music pretty much all his life. Drums was his first love, but when OV would visit his grandma and grandpa, he would watch his uncle compose instrumentals and started to learn more towards the piano and producing growing up. OV’s father saw his interest and gifting in the piano and started buying him equipment from the age of 10 until he was 16 years old, randomly getting keyboards, synthesizers, mixers, computer programs which kept him grounded and dedicated on building as a producer. From around the age of 18, OV started to take producing more seriously and made it his main goal to make music forever. Pink Sky Paradise is OV’s first ever project that he put together. The project started out as a simple instrumental only beat tape, but over time OV’s fellow artist friends and OV formed a team and realised they had quite a lot in common and could learn a lot from each other having such a strong passion for music so why not join forces on the project to show the world all their creative flow at the same time.

#72- rich magazine uk

‘From the mixing to the graphics the people that helped me execute the project in a way, I can call any of them at any moment and talk about anything and everything with them.’ - OV Pink Sky Paradise is all about the journey in one’s life to birth to maintaining happiness. OV expresses that ‘Even though it may seem cliché, it shows that if you do what you love with who you love, metaphorically saying, finding and rekindling that relationship with your curiosity as such when you were a kid, finding your “Paradise” but with me it so happens to have Pink Skies.’ It just shows that many things that Pink Sky Paradise mean to OV. And from his story, it’s just a simple reminder that anything is possible by being grounded and dedicated to something that you love and have a strong passion about. nstagram.com/vaughnvibes/ Soundcloud: https://soundcloud. com/vaughnvibes BandCamp: https://vaughnvibes. bandcamp.com/releases
