Tonight’s Lead Patron Altria Group is a FORTUNE 200 company that owns the premier tobacco companies in the United States: Philip Morris USA, U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, and John Middleton, all headquartered in Richmond, Virginia. Their premium brands include Marlboro, Copenhagen, Skoal, and Black & Mild. Altria also owns Ste. Michelle Wine Estates, one of the country’s top premium wine producers; Philip Morris Capital Corporation, an investment company; and has a continuing economic and voting interest in SABMiller. Altria is focused on creating substantial value for its shareholders through sound business practices, investing in strong premium brands, and driving product innovation. At the same time, Altria’s companies recognize that how we do business is as important as the business results we achieve. Altria is focused on setting standards and priorities for our companies, including valuing and respecting employees, working to reduce the harm associated with tobacco products, and partnering locally to improve the quality of life in the communities where they do business. Altria’s companies know that responsible business practices are vital to their long-term success. Altria’s commitment to corporate responsibility is reflected in several key accomplishments in 2012, when Altria was: • named to the 2012 Dow Jones Sustainability North American Index • ranked 4th among all companies and 1st among the tobacco industry in social responsibility by FORTUNE magazine • ranked the 6th greenest food and beverage company in the U.S. in Newsweek’s annual “Green Rankings”
• ranked 15th on CR Magazine’s 2012 “100 Best Corporate Citizens List” Altria’s companies are proud to partner with organizations working to strengthen Virginia communities. That involvement means collaborating with local leaders to create longterm solutions that address local needs. Altria’s companies focus their giving in the following areas: education and youth development, arts and culture, and environment. In the last ten years, Altria has donated more than $1.3 billion in cash and in-kind contributions to hundreds of non-profit groups. Altria is grateful to the community for its success in Virginia and acknowledges that the hard work and teamwork of its companies’ employees will be the catalyst for continued success as it focuses on growth and the development of its headquarters region. WHAT IS a legacy of teaching children how to handle legacies
WORTH?
According to a 2011 U.S. Trust survey,* less than one-third of adults believe their children will be prepared to handle an inheritance. Which is why we created the Financial Empowerment Program: to provide your children with all the insights, guidance and assistance necessary to help preserve and grow the assets they’ll inherit and carry on the values that helped you earn that wealth. For more on how we can help with your legacy and estate planning needs, please read “The Power of Positive Teaching” at ustrust.com/lessons

Tonight, we welcome filmmaker Steven Spielberg, historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, and screenwriter Tony Kushner back to Richmond, where the movie Lincoln was filmed during the fall of 2011. The three will explore the process of bringing history to life on film—the choices and challenges of achieving historical accuracy within a narrative that will be compelling for moviegoers, and the process that affects everything from script to casting to locations to final print. They will also discuss how Hollywood has embraced historical films throughout its own history and what their impact has been. The screenplay for Lincoln, written by Kushner, is based in part on Goodwin’s 2005 book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Steven Spielberg Winner of three Academy Awards, Steven Spielberg is one of the industry’s most successful and influential filmmakers and a principal partner of DreamWorks Studios. He is the topgrossing director of all time, having helmed such blockbusters as Jaws, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones franchise, and Jurassic Park. As an executive producer, his successes include the Back to the Future trilogy, three Men in Black films, and three Transformers films. Films with an historical theme have played an important role in his career, beginning with Empire of the Sun, and then Schindler’s List, Amistad, Saving Private Ryan, Munich, and War Horse. He was a producer with Clint Eastwood on Flags of Our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima. He took home his first two Oscars®, for Best Director and Best Picture, for Schindler’s List, which received a total of seven Oscars. Spielberg
won his third Academy Award for Best Director for the World War II drama, Saving Private Ryan, as well as two Golden Globe Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. Spielberg’s success has not been limited to theatrical motion pictures. He was an executive producer on the long-running Emmy-winning TV drama ER, and following their experience working together on Saving Private Ryan, he and Tom Hanks teamed to executive-produce Band of Brothers and The Pacific for HBO, both of which won Emmys for Best Miniseries. With ten to date, Spielberg has been honored by his peers with more Directors Guild of America (DGA) Award nominations than any other director. In 2000, he received the DGA’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He is also the recipient of the Irving G. Thalberg Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Hollywood Foreign Press’ Cecil B. DeMille Award, the Producers Guild’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award, the Kennedy Center Honor, and numerous other tributes.

The mid-19th century was a time of great innovation in brass instrument design. As a result, brass bands became something of a popular movement in the United States. By the 1850s, virtually every city, town, and village in the U.S. was replete with brass bands, ranging from small amateur ensembles to large professional organizations. These bands provided music in concert settings and for parades and military musters, with the town band often being attached to the local militia regiment. With the outbreak of the Civil War, bands in both the north and the south rushed to enlist alongside their regiments, and it was a point of pride for a regiment to have a good brass band. Regimental bands provided music for dress parades, entertained the troops, concertized for the local populace, serenaded the officers, and played while on the march, to buoy the soldiers’ morale. In battle, bandsmen served as medical corpsman, orderlies, and stretcher bearers. Bands occasionally were ordered to perform patriotic music during battle, to bolster the troops’ fighting spirit. Confederate General Robert E. Lee once said, “I don’t believe we can have an army without music.” The Federal City Brass Band is one of the leading Civil War brass bands in the United States. Founded in 2002, it authentically recreates the sound and appearance of a Union Army regimental brass band of the 1860s. In
addition, it performs in Confederate uniform as the 26th North Carolina Regiment Band. The band performs the most popular music of the 1850-1865 period, as well as patriotic airs, operatic medleys, marches, and dance tunes by the era’s most renowned composers and bandmasters. Their musical arrangements come from the band books of actual Civil War-era bands, or are adapted from original Civil War-era sheet music. Their instruments are historic antiques dating to the Civil War era. Several members of the band appeared in Steven Spielberg’s film, Lincoln. The following band members have traveled from New York, Maryland, and Kentucky to perform for us tonight: Jeff Stockham on E-flat cornet, Don Johnson on E-flat cornet, Jari Villanueva on B-flat cornet, Jeff Rogers on alto horn, Kyle Russell on tenor horn, Jay Norris on tuba, Garman Bowers, Jr. on snare drum, and Ted Deitz on bass drum. The Federal City Brass Band has appeared at many distinguished events and venues including the Smithsonian Museum of American History, Ford’s Theatre, the Library of Congress, Arlington National Cemetery, Ft. McHenry, Gettysburg National Cemetery, The Kennedy Center, and numerous others. Tonight’s musical performance is made possible by the generous support of Moore Cadillac Company.

Lincoln had an impeccable pedigree from the beginning. Based in part on Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin and directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Tony Kushner, it is no wonder that Lincoln turned out to be a powerfully insightful film that has inspired the admiration of critics and audiences since its November 2012 premiere. Because of the authenticity of the architecture and the area’s rich historic heritage, there was never any doubt that Richmond and Petersburg were the perfect locations for the film. Another powerful inducement was that Abraham Lincoln, in the final month of his life, visited the area to ensure a peaceful conclusion to the Civil War. The film shot for 55 days and contributed $64 million to the state’s economy. Virginia Film Office staff assisted the production and acted as liaisons for the filming. 1,199 Virginia actors and extras were cast, and 380 Virginians worked on the crew. DreamWorks Studios reported that the film benefited a wide range of Virginia companies, including such diverse businesses as grocery stores, hardware stores, vehicle rental companies, hotels, dry cleaners, restaurants, apartment buildings, fabric shops, and antique stores. In addition to employment for actors and extras, the film provided jobs for Virginians as carpenters, painters, craftspeople, tailors, drivers, film crew, caterers, camera operators, and security guards. As an example of
the kind of impact a film like Lincoln can have, DreamWorks spent a total of $1.85 million on accommodations, which translates into a total of 23,850 room nights. Thanks to the generous support of Governor Bob McDonnell and various state agencies, many scenes were shot inside the Virginia State Capitol, and the exterior of the building played the Lincoln White House. The Executive Mansion and Capitol grounds were also used, and the battlefield and ship scenes were filmed on state-owned land. The November Theatre (formerly the Empire Theatre) is featured, as is Maymont Park, where the McLean House set was built for the surrender scene. Various local government agencies were involved in filming in Historic Petersburg, which plays a pivotal role in the production. The public can visit filming sites, restaurants, and shops frequented by the cast and crew, as well as those places in Richmond and Petersburg visited by Abraham Lincoln. For more information about Lincoln tours, visit www.virginia.org/Lincoln. Making a film is not a mystery. Making an exceptional film often is, however, and this beautiful mystery permeates Lincoln. While many talented and skilled people came together to create the film, any number in that group will tell you that Lincoln transcended standard filmmaking. Something inspirational and lifechanging occurred during filming; what an honor that Virginia was both backdrop and character in such an extraordinary portrayal of American history.

Exploring Emancipation at the Virginia Historical Society Following an unsuccessful attempt to capture Richmond during the spring and summer of 1862, the Union Army of the Potomac retreated to Westover, John Armistead Selden’s plantation overlooking the James River in Charles City County, Virginia. When the soldiers departed Selden’s home in August, he recorded in his diary (pictured above) that at least forty-one of the enslaved people “left Westover with the Yankees.” Among the adults were fifteen men and nine women. Phillis, Jane, Margaret, Matilda, and Sarah accompanied their twelve children, ranging in age from one to fourteen. Five of the children were listed without their mothers, the youngest an unnamed one-yearold girl. They were among the thousands of enslaved Virginians who, since the earliest days of the Civil War, took the initiative and emancipated themselves by seeking the protection of the Union armies. By September 1862, President Lincoln concluded that the preservation of the
Union required emancipation. He issued a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation that declared all slaves in areas not returned to federal control by January 1, 1863, to be “then, thenceforward, and forever free.” “In giving freedom to the slave,” Lincoln remarked, “we assure freedom to the free.” The Proclamation transformed the meaning of Union victory and marked the official beginning of the end of slavery. It also infused the northern war effort with the manpower of plowmen like Nicholas and ox drivers like John Peter. By 1865, more than 180,000 African American soldiers joined the struggle to create a Union without slavery. In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, John Selden’s diary entry will be on display at the Virginia Historical Society through January 31, 2013. The VHS—a history museum and research library—is located at 428 North Boulevard in Richmond. www.vahistorical.org

A smile on the face is a sign that the heart is at home . Since 1984, we’ve been “a place to call home” for over 130,000 out of town patients and family members while they receive critical medical care at Richmond-area hospitals. As the premier area provider of lodging and non-medical services, our mission is to serve referred families in a home-like environment with dignity and integrity and without regard to financial resources.
