A 1797 miniature portrait of Mrs. Cornelius Baldwin (Mary Briscoe), grandmother of Mary Baldwin College’s namesake, by Phillippe Abraham Peticolas
Phillippe Abraham Peticolas painted this miniature portrait of George Washington in 1976.
Theodore dabbled in miniature painting and also took up shopkeeping. Moving west, he continued his pursuits in arts and commerce, eventually settling in Clermont, Ohio. There, at various times, he worked as a surgeon, horticulturist and musician, developing a side interest in fireworks. He died in 1865. Edward studied art in Richmond under the soon-renowned Thomas Sully (that’s his Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill), while Phillippe gave music lessons to Sully’s wife, Sarah (widow of Sully’s older brother and art colleague, Lawrence). Edward went to England in 1815. He studied and traveled in Europe for about five years, returning to Eighth and Clay by 1820, where he promoted his own “exhibition room.” Writer William Dunlap included Edward’s work in a survey of the young republic’s artistic development. Dunlap expressed Edward’s style as “chaste, his coloring clear” and noted that “he deserved all the employment of that city.” On Oct. 17, 1822, Edward married painter and copyist Jane Pitfield Braddick. Their son, Arthur Edward Peticolas, also exhibited art but went into medicine. Edward’s best-known work is a full-length portrait of America’s Revolutionary War ally the Marquis de Lafayette, which was first displayed in the domed Robert Mills-designed City Hall during Lafayette’s 1824 visit. This painting and another of George Washington by artist and would-be museum creator James Warrell went above either side of the bench where sat Lafayette and mayor/physician John Adams (for whom the downtown street is named). Edward’s Lafayette survives at the Valentine. Edward lived for a while in London but by 1833 returned to Richmond. After 1840, Edward began suffering, writes Simms,
A miniature portrait of Thomas Heyward Jr., a founding father from South Carolina who served in the Continental Congress, by Phillippe Abraham Peticolas, circa 1790
from “attacks of acute rheumatism.” He ceased painting around 1845; his wife died at age 61 on Nov. 10, 1852, and she was buried at Shockoe Hill Cemetery. Edward turned recluse and dressed in suits of colorful patches. He moved into the largely uninhabited western end of Richmond called Sydney, where, like his little brother Theodore, Edward’s artistic passion grew toward horticulture. He cultivated roses, fruits and grapes on a plot near today’s Grove Avenue and Harvie Street. His peace, however, was interrupted on occasion by the taunts of children. One youngster who witnessed these “deprecating urchins,” Robert Alonzo Brock, grew up to be secretary of the Southern Historical Society and recalled Edward’s “rage at some of the spoilations, as he pursued the freebooters in their hasty flight.” Despite these depredations, overlooking his gardens Edward created one of Richmond’s first idiosyncratic houses, though it was mocked by some citizens as “Peticolas’ Castle.” Brock remembered the place as a “heterogenous mass in form and material defying literal description.” Many additions clustered around in various stages of completion, with “turrets varied in dimensions and attitude” and some parts deteriorating while others were undergoing repair. In July 1853, Arthur, the doctor son, sold off his father’s remaining art and property, which led to the dismantling of “Peticolas’ Castle.” Edward received formal adjudgment as a lunatic and apparently died not long after. Arthur, too, suffered from afflictions of body and mind. While superintendent of the Eastern Lunatic Asylum in Williamsburg, on the morning of Nov. 28, 1868, he jumped from a window to his death. R
The brothers Peticolas all engaged in variations of art and trade.

SHOP TALK
BOXED UP
A new subscription book service delivers a monthly surprise By Nicole Cohen
Z
oë Strauss has a passion for reading. So when the pandemic caused her to take a step back from her job as an athletic trainer, she decided in late 2021 to move forward with an idea she had for a subscrip-
tion-based reading box service, Book Brigade (bookbrigadebox.com). “One of the big parts with reading that I loved was sharing books with my friends and family, and then they would read it, and then we would talk about it,” Strauss says. “I loved that aspect of it because it brought people together.” There are three box types: young adult fiction, adult fiction and adult nonfiction. Each box includes the book of the month, a custom postcard print and three to five items sourced from small businesses. The items included each month usually correspond with the book’s theme; Strauss has included teas from Carytown Teas, dried bouquets from local floral design business Moody Blooms, and Illinois-based Novelly Yours candles.

The book included each month is a surprise until subscriptions are delivered, but Strauss reveals hints on her website. The literature will always be a different genre, it could be a hardcover or paperback version, and it may be a newer or older title. Subscriptions start at $39.99 monthly, and there are also three-month and six-month options. Strauss also offers custom boxes, allowing customers to select their own book to include based on what’s left over from previous months. It’s a one-time purchase with no subscription required. Strauss encourages sharing and will provide a shipping label to a customer who wants to send their book to someone else. If the customer would like to keep their book, they can request a copy to be mailed to a person of their choice. There’s no charge for this service, but it’s limited to four times during the year. Strauss says she wants to build an in-person community with readings at local businesses that will be open to subscribers and nonsubscribers alike. She’d like to bring in authors and speakers for Q&A sessions and may even incorporate online gatherings since some subscribers live outside the Richmond area. “I really just want to give [people] a way to get a different reading experience each month while also giving them a way to join a community of other people who are also reading similar books,” she says. Local jewelry brand Sun & Selene has partnered with astrologer Lotus Mary Alexandra Lee of The Lotus Vibration to create The Astro Edit, a line of zodiac-inspired pieces. The rings and necklaces in the collection correspond with the current season’s zodiac signs. They’re available in limited quantities, and they also include a custom horoscope by Lee. “Owning a piece of jewelry with a special zodiac sign represents such a unique meaning to each person,” says Sun & Selene founder Brittanny DeRaffele, “and I love being able to craft pieces to depict that personal parallel.” sunandselene.com —NC
In April, Buff City Soap franchise locations opened at 11301 W. Broad St. in Short Pump and at 1601 Willow Lawn Drive. One for the Road
MOBILE BARS MIX FUN AND FUNCTION FOR EVENTS By NICOLE COHEN
WHETHER YOU’RE SERVING signature cocktails, local brews or refreshing sodas at your wedding reception, the bar is essential for hosting guests in style. Given that it’s such a hot spot, more and more couples are opting for a unique design in a libation station. For service delivered straight to you, the Richmond region offers many creative mobile bar options. Here are three recently opened businesses:
CRUISIN’ BREWZ
A blast from the past, Cruisin’ Brewz (cruisin brewz.com) offers a renovated, nine-tap 1923 Ford Model TT and a box-tap style 1925 Ford Model T to transport and serve libations in style. “It’s really classy,” says Peter Shanley, who assists with event coordination. “The beverages are an important part of the event, and if you can have something like that, it’s a showpiece, and you’re not just stepping up to a keg.” Shanley did the restoration and conversion of the vehicles. An antique car collector, he says he restored his first Model T when he was 15. His daughter, Emily Shanley, inspired by her father’s car collection, started the business in October 2021. Cruisin’ Brewz is based in Gordonsville but services the Richmond area. Three packages are available with customizable options and add-ons. Due to ABC laws, clients must purchase their own alcohol, but Peter Shanley says they can assist clients with developing their beverage list, from sodas to craft beers.
THE SUGAR CUBE MOBILE BAR CO.
When looking to saddle up your guests with some brews and beverages, The Sugar Cube (thesugarcubebar.com) rides to you in a converted 1974 horse trailer. Owner Madison Cox started the business in late 2020, after she and her fiancé, Michael Pastore, dedicated their extra time that year to renovating the trailer. The mobile bar has a chic boho, Western vibe that’s great for photos. Different packages are available, but all
include a bartender, beer and wine service, sodas, ice and a decorated lounge area. There are two general aesthetics for the lounge area, boho or floral, but Cox works with couples to match everything to their wedding colors and can even incorporate provided decorations. Due to ABC regulations, couples must purchase the alcohol themselves, but Cox takes care of serving, from the ice to the garnishes. “We really do try to make it as easy as possible for the brides by taking care of everything,” Cox says.
KOMBI KEG RVA
To make your event groovy with a dash of vintage, there’s Kombi Keg RVA (kombikeg.com) and its restored and modified 1962 Volkswagen Kombi. The co-owners, Megan Clark and the husband-and-wife team Jennifer and Nathan Cumming, purchased the Richmond franchise in February. The six-tap bus, named Norma Jean, can dispense beer, cider, wine and even nonalcoholic beverages. The Kombi can be rented as self-service or staffed by a bartender. Due to ABC regulations, clients must purchase their own alcohol, but Cumming notes they can pick up and drop off. The Kombi also has a 55-inch rooftop TV, which can be used for photo slideshows and videos of the couple. There are a variety of packages, including a game package with yard games, and three pop-up bars are also available as add-ons. “[The Kombi provides] great photo opportunities, and the novelty of the bus … it provides a great look,” Cumming says.
