MONTESSORI MATTERS THE 2015 ANNUAL REPORT OF RICHMOND MONTESSORI SCHOOL

THE RMS ANNUAL REPORT THE RMS ANNUAL REPORT honors parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, the Board of Trustees, alumni, and friends who have helped to make the 2014 - 2015 school year a success. We are truly grateful for the generous outpouring of community support. To better steward your gifts and reduce the impact on our environment, we have moved to an online format. This format eliminates the production and mailing of nearly 60,000 printed pages and allows us to highlight our RMS community in much more detail. This report recognizes gifts received between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015 and is a publication of the Advancement Office of Richmond Montessori School. Message from the Head of School Grainne Murray Change is in the air! Last year brought a few changes, the highlight of which was the opening of our north campus academic building. From the groundbreaking ceremony all the way through the end of the school year, the new classrooms were buzzing with students actively engaged in their learning, and a continuous stream of visitors curious to know more about Richmond Montessori School. In spite of the transitional nature of the past school year, I am ever grateful that our values remain steadfastly committed to our Montessori roots. This is evident in the soul of our culture; in the unwavering dedication of our faculty and staff, our enthusiastic and creative students, and a close knit community of parents, board members and friends who, together in harmony, have one single goal – to create the optimum learning environment for the children we serve here at Richmond Montessori School. And thanks to your gifts, our students receive so much more than excellent programs rich in Montessori philosophy. They are the beneficiaries of enhanced Arts programs including new fine arts offerings, theater arts opportunities & a series of visiting international Musicians to broaden their musical perspectives. Many new students are here because of your generosity - children who otherwise would not have been afforded the opportunity of a Richmond Montessori School education. As a member of a worldwide educational community we are proud to celebrate our diversity! I am fortunate that the baton has been passed to me while RMS is thriving under the governance of a dedicated board of trustees. My goal is to sustain the vitality of the RMS community, taking a wide view toward the future wellbeing of our school, while keeping my eyes firmly planted on our central focus – our students. We have much to celebrate as we enter our 50th year, and I look forward to sharing the journey with you. Sincerely yours,

!

Message From the Board of Trustees Chair Shannon Sinclair Thank you for your commitment and dedication to Richmond Montessori School. Special thanks to the outstanding teachers and administrators who cultivate our children's intellectual curiosity and nurture the whole child. Sincere thanks to our parents for your belief in the authentic Montessori experience provided by RMS and for the generous gift of your time, talent, and treasure. Most importantly, thanks to our RMS students who create a vibrant and unique community that spans all classes and age groups. As we celebrate our 49th year as an independent school, we can all take pride in knowing that Richmond Montessori School continues to provide an exceptional Montessori education anchored by academic excellence, meaningful life-changing stories of community and learning, and financial stability. RMS continues to attract families looking for a community where the child’s education is based on nurturing and cultivating the child’s natural desire to learn while developing the whole person. I’m proud to be part of such a wonderful school. 2014-2015 noteworthy accomplishments and news include: The promotion of long-serving faculty and staff member, Grainne Murray, to Head of School, Continued financial stability, and Successful phase one completion of our Unfold our Future capital campaign which built a new academic building and science lab. Our school’s future success depends on maintaining a strong financial foundation. We want to keep tuition reasonable and competitive, which means we rely on the Annual Fund to promote access for students through financial aid and to support important programming and professional development. Last year, generous support for the Annual Fund enabled RMS to send all of our teachers to the American Montessori Society conference to share best practices with Montessori educators from across the country. Annual Fund contributions are essential to the continued growth and enhancement of our school community. As we look towards our 50th anniversary, I urge you to continue to contribute to the future of RMS – and the future of our children. Consistent and strong philanthropic giving provides great benefits to all of our students, helps the school attract outside grants from foundations and other philanthropic institutions, and meets one of the many requirements of accreditation. Being a part of the Richmond Montessori School community means being a part of something special! There is still much work to be done and many more stories to be told at Richmond Montessori School – and I welcome all of you to join me in continuing the success of RMS. Gratefully,

!

Message from the RMPA President Jenn Walker I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our RMS community, for another fun and successful school year. We could not have done it without your continued support. The RMPA sponsored events throughout the year, bringing our community together. Harvestfest was our first big family event, and thanks to Lia Mooney, there was plenty of fun to be had by both kids and adults. It was a wonderful event, right down to the beautiful, sunny day. Chris Campbell hosted the second annual RMS Bingo night in February, which was a big success, despite the snowy weather. Christine Lowry brought us all together for the year-end picnic, which was well attended even with the rainy weather. Erin Campbell chaired our hospitality committee. She and her fantastic group of volunteers showed our teachers and faculty how much we appreciate them. They provided lunches and treats during teacher appreciation week, as well as holiday gifts. She also arranged to have lunches brought in during both parent teacher conference days. Sheila Olesen coordinated childcare for RMS parents for both conference days. She and her family were present throughout the day, watching and entertaining our kids. It’s a long day, so we greatly appreciate their time. RMPA fundraising had another successful year, thanks to all of our dedicated students and parents. Sarah Dan managed the ever popular Pizza Fridays. Britta Petersson partnered with local bookstore, bbgb, to bring us a very successful book fair. Gretchen Hall brought Freed Spirit back for school photos, and she arranged for them to come a day early to offer family sittings. Jessica Czajkowski managed the Box Tops program. We put more emphasis on community building over the past year. We introduced Coffee Fridays, inviting parents to stop in one Friday morning during the month to grab coffee, one of Katie Houston’s delectable cinnamon rolls, and hopefully meet some new faces. We also hosted a parent’s night out at Capital Ale House. I want to also recognize the awesome RMPA executive leaders: Vice President, Erin Campbell; Treasurer, Ed Trageser; and Secretary, Chris Campbell. It was their leadership and continued support that helped make the year so successful. Thank you to each and every one of you who helped make the 2014-2015 school year a success for the RMPA. It’s you, our community, who make RMS so awesome. I can’t wait to do it all again next year!
