Richmond Mounties are issuing a public warning about the perils of buying or selling through Craigslist after a local couple was held up at knifepoint in a brazen daylight robbery at Lansdowne Centre that nearly ended tragically. Last Thursday, a local couple who had spotted two iPads advertised on the free classifieds website, arranged to meet up with the seller. And they took some wise precautions: they met during daylight hours and in a public place, driving up in their SUV and parking right in front of the normally busy Best Buy and No. 9 Chinese restaurant at the No. 3 Road entrance to the bustling shopping centre. Despite being wary, the couple suddenly found themselves with knives held to their throats by a robber, who stepped into their vehicle and then demanded their cash after showing them an iPad box. That’s when the incident quickly deteriorated. In a panic, the driver of the SUV slammed his foot on the accelerator, and plunged his vehicle into the entranceway of the mall.

Smashing through the glass sliding doors, the SUV struck a woman and her young daughter who were fleeing in horror. After the SUV slid to a stop several car lengths into the mall, the robber jumped out and fled on foot. One eyewitness overheard the robbers screaming “Give us your money.” Fortunately, the young girl wasn’t injured, though her mother suffered a broken leg. Police have not released a description of the suspect, but are asking that any witnesses to the incident contact them at 604-278-1212. RCMP Insp. Janis Gray said residents should be aware that if a Craigslist posting seems too good to be true, it probably is. Gray said this incident underscores the dangers of dealing with complete strangers who are selling heavily-discounted merchandise that is most likely stolen in many instances. Last year, RCMP E-division issued advice on dealing with Craigslist transactions that would reduce the likelihood of getting scammed, though it doesn’t “foolproof” the process, the online RCMP warning said. “Complete your transaction with someone who is local that you can meet in person. When meeting up, never go alone and try to meet in a public setting if possible,” the RCMP said. That advice was heeded by the local couple, who still found themselves the victims of a robbery. Pesticide police hit the streets Saturday

Summer Night Market opens Friday

City launches educational and enforcement campaign in time for summer

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter Bylaw officers will be on the lookout this weekend for lawn lawbreakers and guerilla gardeners. The city has yet to hand out a fine under an 18-month-old bylaw banning the use of pesticides, but as warmer weather brings homeowners outdoors, the city is launching an educational and enforcement program. Weather permitting, two officers will be deployed to local neighbourhoods on Saturdays to watch for the use of illegal pesticides and hand out brochures with information on the bylaw and natural alternatives. A homeowner caught with a bottle of Killex or a landscaper found spreading Weed ‘N’ Feed will get a warning, said city spokesperson Kim Decker, who noted Richmond’s 170 landscaping businesses have been made aware of the bylaw. “If they found a landscaping company and they were in contradiction to the bylaw they get a warning. If they catch them again there would be enforcement.” Bylaw officers can issue fines of $100 for the first offence, $500 for the second and $1,000 for the third. Decker said it’s important homeowners and strata corporations ensure their landscaping contractors are using only products permitted by the city. City staff had considered testing residential lawns for illegal treatments, but so far haven’t, focusing on education instead. Although officials believe the use of pesticides has dropped off in Richmond, retailers are still permitted to sell the chemicals. “We’re serious about this bylaw, even though it’s difficult to enforce,” said Kim Decker, city spokesperson. “Cosmetic pesticides aren’t acceptable in our city.” The bylaw applies to residential and city property, but excludes farms, golf courses and the inside buildings. According to the city, pesticides come in many forms, including herbicides used for weeds, insecticides for insects and fungicides for fungal disease.

Craigslistrelated cases • A Woodland, Calif. man was shoved and had his iPad stolen late last month after posting the electronic gadget on Craigslist and arranging to sell it in a mall parking lot. • Last month, a jury in Tacoma, Wash. convicted a 22-year-old woman for her role in the home-invasion style slaying of a man who had advertised a ring on Craigslist and who was eventually shot in front of his family inside his own home, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. • Two teens were arrested after robbing a man at gunpoint and stealing his laptop computer in Portland, Ore. earlier this year after they arranged to meet him to buy the item that had been listed on Craigslist.

Proposed Steveston apartments would be kitty-corner to fishing fleet by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter Apartments boasting the first clear views of a oncemighty fishing fleet could soon be built in Steveston Village. Cornerstone Architecture has applied to rezone a former marine supply store at 3531 Bayview St. to allow a three-storey commercial-residential development. The proposal is another sign of the changing face of Steveston Village, where a growing number of people call home. A project consultant said housing more people in the village is a boon to businesses. “What you want to do to ensure Steveston is a vibrant, successful community is to have people living right where the businesses are. It really helps maintain a solid core of customers for those businesses,” said Dana Westermark, working on behalf of Elegant Development. Last summer Towns Netting and Marine Supplies Ltd., moved out of the village, leaving its light industrial

storefront empty. The site—located across from the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, falls within the new Steveston conservation zone. Adding to the project’s complexities is its proximity to the dyke. Westermark said the project has responded to comments from the community and direction from the city, resulting in a smaller building than originally considered. Plans call for commercial space fronting Bayview Street and Third Avenue, a full storey of residential above, and a partial residential storey above that. Westermark said a town hall meeting is planned in the near future to collect more opinions from the neighbourhood before a final set of drawings is presented to the city for review. “We want to make sure that this building fits in with the community and that it’s an attractive addition to Steveston,” he said. City council’s planning committee chair, Coun. Bill McNulty, said the revised plan should be more in keeping with the area.

From Page 1 Technology expert Werner Antweiler, associate professor of the Sauder School of Business at University of B.C., said while the vast majority of people who use Craigslist are law-abiding citizens, the online trading platform does draw shadowy figures. “It’s a platform where people have to be careful,” he said. And although it appears the victims in Thursday’s incident were cautious, Antweiler said buyers have to employ more than just common sense before making any purchases, researching not just the product but the person who is selling it in order to protect themselves. One’s radar should go up if the product’s price seems too good to be true, he said. Antweiler said it’s unfair to blame Craigslist, but said the website does have some responsibility to ensure users of the service provide their true names and addresses. But it’s the anonymity that Craigslist affords that’s helped make it a magnet for crime. The website has evolved into a targeting device, where criminals can pinpoint people trying to sell items, or draw out potential victims by posting popular items for sale. The popularity of Craigslist has helped eliminate the need by criminals to seek out a middle man to sell stolen goods. As for whether buyers are truly being duped, that depends on what’s being bought. If it’s an item, like an iPad2, that’s just been released, and normally sells for between $500 and $900, and is selling for less than that, buyers should know better. “There are some who might be well aware that something’s suspicious, but for this price won’t look twice,” Antweiler said. On the other hand, if it was the original iPad released more than a year ago and being sold as a used gadget, that’s less likely to set off alarm bells.

From Page 1 Now after 41 years, the school is facing an uncertain future. It appears its longtime tenancy with Richmond Presbyterian Church is coming to a close. Now parents face the prospect of the school’s lease ending midterm, and despite a desperate search, a new location hasn’t been found. “It’s really just very difficult to get a space for a preschool,” said Emi Benish, a parent and co-president of the preschool, noting the challenge of finding affordable space that meets modern building code requirements. Co-president Mary Irwin’s son attends the school, and hopes to enroll her younger daughter in September. “We’re in this state of limbo and it’s hard for new parents coming in because we’ve had to say, ‘Unfortunately, we don’t know if we’ll be there for the whole school year,’” said Irwin. The non-profit Gingerbread House is the only parent participation preschool in Richmond.

Each family that enrolls commits to volunteering in the classroom and participating in monthly parent education sessions. Parents help shape the curriculum, decide on field trips and even determine tuition rates. Its playbased curriculum attracts families of three- and four-year-old children of a variety of cultures and faiths. “I have one son and I really wanted him to enjoy school, feel comfortable and feel safe and welcome, and for him it meant that mommy could come in whenever he needed me. That was really important to me,” said Benish. Parents are pleading for help to save the preschool. They’re hoping to find a new location with indoor and outdoor space that’s available weekdays, similar to their existing church site at No. 2 Road at Granville Avenue. Said Benish: “We really believe in it. It’s a place where a community is built.” For more information or to help, contact Mary Irwin at maryirwin2010@hotmail.com.

Another summer of hurricane potatoes, trendy trinkets and outdoor entertainment begins Friday, as the Summer Night Market opens a week earlier this year. Promising bigger attractions and more food, the market runs Fridays and Saturdays from 7 p.m. to midnight and Sundays from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. during the month of May. Market president Paul Cheung said 240 vendors are already confirmed, including 50 new retailers and a host of new food vendors. The Summer Night Market, now in its fourth year under Cheung’s Lions Communications company, is modelled after night markets in Asian cities that are known as shopping destinations. Admission is still free, and Cheung said the food, prizes and entertainment continue to draw thousands of visitors each night. “It’s a great place for dinner,” he said. “Every night I try something different. I found that over the years the food vendors have become very top quality in what they present because the expectations from the crowd are very high.” New food vendors will offer Thai and Italian food, and candy made on-site. Entertainment Friday includes live performances of Christian Latin salsa music and rap beginning at 7 p.m. On Saturday the belly dancing troupe Shimmy for the Soul will perform at 8:30 p.m., and on Sunday guitarist Doug Towle will perform. The market is located at 12631 Vulcan Way. Vehicle entrance to the site is from the north along River Road, just past No. 5 Road. The market has organized six parking lots this year, including inside the market area, behind Sears and at Home Depot. Parking is $4 to $5. The market runs until Sept. 18.

City could get new pool by 2014 Staff Reporter A new indoor pool facility is scheduled to replace Minoru Aquatic Centre by 2014, according to a new finance department report. The report, presented to city council Monday, reveals the city is planning to build a new aquatic centre beginning next year at an estimated cost of $51.5 million. If built under the current schedule, construction would last an estimated two years. But city spokesperson Ted Townsend

said 2012-2014 is the proposed period for accumulating funding for the project, and the actual construction timeline may vary. He also noted the project still requires council approval. The five-pool facility is Richmond’s original indoor aquatic facility, covering 30,000 square feet in the southeast corner of Minoru Park. The building is at the end of its lifespan, according to a 2007 facilities strategic plan, which suggests a new 45,000-square-foot facility is needed and is best built in the same corner of the park. ®

Staff Reporter Addison Bernardino was understandably moved by an outpouring of love and generosity this week from his co-workers at Terra Nova’s Save-OnFoods, whose efforts may save his two-month-old daughter’s life. Bernardino’s daughter Chloe has two small holes in her heart, and without the necessary surgery, could die soon. But since little Chloe is still in the Philippines, where there’s no universal health care system, doctors are requiring payment up front: $5,000. Bernardino initially kept his story quiet, but then told a co-worker in the bakery department, who took the initiative to get the fundraising ball rolling. In just five days, the store collected more than $6,700, thanks largely to an $1,800 contribution from the store’s social fund, $1,500 from head office, $1,400 from staff, $1,300 through a weekend hot dog sale, $370 from the Ironwood and No. 3 Road stores, $300 from the union and $110 from customers. EDITORIAL: Time to name something after Gil Blair

A

few months ago we received the following letter to the editor:

“I was reading through one of the Richmond Archives books and noted that a lot of councillors and mayors of Richmond have been noted for their work by having schools, roads and public buildings named after them, which should be applauded for doing so. “But one name has been missed, that being Gil Blair. “Gil gave 17 years of his time

as mayor. As well, he was a great sportsman. I played many years with Gil in lacrosse. After leaving lacrosse, Gil went on to promoting young players along with Harold Nichols and John Lackner. He was also instrumental in promoting soccer as well as playing the sport. “I think Gil should be recognized in some way for his help and ambitions.” The letter-writer makes a great point. (And sorry, we can’t quite make out the signature on the letter. If the

person who wrote it could contact us, we’d be happy to print the letter in full.) While Blair’s family has been wellremembered, appropriate considering the family first came to Richmond in 1879 and played a prominent role in Richmond’s early development, so far Gil Blair’s name has yet to grace anything. Blair, who died in 2006, was mayor from 1974 to 1990. His time in the mayor’s chair coincided with the evolution of Richmond from a predominately agricultural community

to a growing suburb. While a lot of controversial developments occurred under his watch (Lansdowne, Terra Nova), he was a man who cared greatly about the community. Considering Blair’s championing of local sports, naming a sports facility after him is not only appropriate, but overdue. The city is now considering a new indoor pool facility to replace Minoru Aquatic Centre by 2014. If it goes ahead, why not name it after a man who served Richmond for decades?

P

remier Christy Clark’s shifting position on the harmonized sales tax finally appears to have come to rest.

Her government is preparing to “fix the HST,” and the terms of that fix will be made available before people mark their ballots in a mail-in vote in June, Clark told reporters at the legislature last week. There has been a flurry of activity on the HST in recent days, and a few things are becoming clear. Clark and Finance Minister Kevin Falcon are preparing to do what I’ve been saying for months the government must do—make a solemn vow to cut the HST rate to 11 per cent as soon as they can. And in keeping with Clark’s fondness for populist, headlinehunting gestures, the government will also likely rebate the HST on bicycles and bicycle helmets, and possibly fitness club memberships as well. A couple of other “family-first” exemptions may also be gleaned from the town halls, online surveys and polling that are currently going on. A well-known polling firm was in the field last week, asking not only about people’s impressions of their new premier and opposition

Black Press photo Will Premier Christy Clark cut the HST to 11 per cent?

leader, but also their view towards a reduction in the HST rate. Win or lose the mail-in referendum on the tax in June or July, the B.C. Liberals are getting ready for a fall general election. Falcon estimates that cutting one point from the HST would cost the provincial treasury $850 million. Given that revenue from the HST is running well ahead of the finance ministry’s estimates, that figure could be low. The government’s independent panel issued its report last week, and it confirms that the HST is bringing in more revenue than expected. Going back to the PST would not only trigger huge costs of paying

back federal transition funds and reconstructing a provincial sales tax office, it would cost the B.C. government more than $500 million in net revenue in the first year, and more after that. Here’s one reason why HST revenue is higher than originally projected. Contrary to the apocalyptic predictions of some in the restaurant industry, the panel compiled Statistics Canada figures and found that B.C. restaurant sales rose by three per cent in the first seven months of the HST. That’s exactly the same increase as the rest of the country, despite the supposedly crushing effect of the tax and B.C.’s new impaired driving regulations.

Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell has pitched in as a host for the telephone town hall program that continued this week. These giant conference calls were staged Tuesday evening in the Okanagan, Fraser Valley and northern and central Vancouver Island. The program wraps up this evening with calls to Richmond, South Delta, the North Shore, Victoria and Vancouver. Bell said his call for the Interior and North Coast had more than 30,000 people on the line. Some were still upset about the HST, while others had misconceptions about what costs it does and doesn’t increase, he said. And lifting the

tax from bicycles was a popular choice. I continue to get emails from people who are misinformed about the HST. One reader said he is paying it on heating oil. I suggested he check his bill again, and there it was, a rebate for the seven-per-cent provincial portion. The GST applied before and it continues to apply now. These telephone town halls have gone a long way towards putting the discussion on a factual basis. Voters may yet be persuaded to keep the HST. The errors at times cannot be detected until the “fail safe” systems fail. The letter also indicates a high dependency on local emergency actions that will come into effect if a failure occurs. If this project receives approval and since it is to provide a more economical method of fuel delivery and storage one can suggest that VAFFC post a perpetual bond of minimum $1 million to serve as its intent to protect the community and environment, with yearly interest to be paid to the City of Richmond community voluntary services. Editor: I would love for someone to explain the logic behind why a city would go to the expense of building left turn bays with a left turn arrow on the signal light and then not use them. I have been at one of these lights that seems to require four vehicles to activate it and then ash long enough for only three vehicles to turn on the left turn arrow. The dumbest one of all is westbound on Westminster Highway.

At 9 a.m. on a weekday I was in a line of seven or more cars and no left turn arrow. Only two cars could get through on each sequence. I’m sure that ICBC would not be impressed as this is a dangerous intersection and lack of a left turn arrow increases the chance of an accident. I do not expect the light to ash until every car turns. However, as there are sensors in the road, presumably connected to a trafďŹ c computer, it is possible to have the light ash just long enough for even one car, if necessary. Paul Downs, Richmond

letters Doors Open or closed? Editor: The Doors Open event this weekend was a fabulous array of the diverse culture, history and spiritual sites that Richmond has to offer. As a longtime Richmond resident, it made me proud to show guests what is in my own backyard. However, I was a little disconcerted when I visited one site, “Grandpa’s Old Cars,” as part of Doors Open. I expected that one could freely enter to see the cars, and other memorabilia. Not only did I have to spend gas, time and energy, but I had to give up visiting other sites I would have liked to have seen. When I arrived, I was told at the door that a mandatory donation of $10 per head was required to see anything inside the building. As far as I was concerned a dona-

tion should be voluntary, not mandatory. This equates to an admission fee, and when I tried to explain that the site was listed as number 33 on the Doors Open program with a big placard at the front entrance, and it should have been a free public event, I was told this was a mistake on The Richmond Review’s part, and that it was a “private function.” Furthermore, it was listed as being handicapped accessible, but a large white sign prohibiting walkers and wheelchairs was displayed at the front. I am not handicapped, but I could imagine it may have posed a problem for people who had made a concerted effort to get down to Gilbert road to see the cars. In any event, I did not pay the required admission fee, and instead set my compass to

visit other cultural sites, that the doors were truly open. I think in the future, Grandpa’s Old Cars should be excluded from Doors Open events unless the doors are open freely to the public. Isn’t that the whole mission of the event? Brian Nix Richmond Editor’s Note: Grandpa’s Old Cars did charge a fee to visitors at Doors Open, according to Jim Ratsoy, who owns the cars. Ratsoy said the fee was a minimum $10 donation, which went to Rosewood Manor, a non-profit residential care home for seniors. Doors Open is run by the City of Richmond, which bills it as a free event. The Richmond Review sponsors Doors Open, but did not produce the brochure listing the participating sites.

hey perform choral and world music in a way most have never heard before. And they’ve been doing it—quietly by many standards—for 10 years.

Next week, the women of the singing group Aliqua will perform in Richmond, previewing songs they’ll perform at their anniversary show this summer. Their Richmond concert is part of MusicFest Canada 2011, a festival bringing thousands of young musicians here from across Canada for concerts, clinics and workshops. Aliqua began with a mission to be unique, and amazingly in an age of imitation, they still are. “Our mission was to take this genre that’s traditionally kind of boring and show people that it can be super fun and cool,” said Erin Bishop, 29, a soprano with Aliqua. It began in 2001 as more storybook than Canadian Idol. A few keen members of a community choir began hosting review sessions—extra rehearsals—to make the choir even better. But only the same six women would show up each time, women who were there to support those who needed the extra practice. They learned a song together, sang it at their community

Aliqua has just gotten better living up to it. “In the beginning we were still singing some classically choral music, but we felt we

But as we’ve gotten older, more musical and more experienced, we’ve been able to add degrees of showmanship...” said Bishop. Group membership has varied from eight to 12 over the decade, but the same core of six is still together. There’s no secret to their longevity, Bishop said, only that issues are immediately dealt with and unnecessary drama isn’t tolerated. Superstardom might have crossed some of their 19-yearold minds in 2001, but that

hasn’t happened. They do have a deal with Nettwerk Records and have produced a pair of albums, but the eight current members—ranging in age from 28 to 37—all have day jobs keeping them mostly on the ground. Bishop herself owns an event planning company. Aliqua performs up to 20 shows each year, including self-produced spring and Christmas concerts, and hope they’ll be able to take one of their shows on the road soon. “Everyone has day jobs, a couple of girls have babies, so it’s not like we want to pick up and take off for six months, but we definitely all know and are working towards doing something like that, just to take it beyond our own city a little bit,” said Bishop. Information on Wednesday’s show in Richmond can be found at musicfest.ca. Aliqua’s 10-year anniversary show is June 24 at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre. Tickets, $32.50, at ticketweb.ca.

Gene Simmons is bringing the family to River Rock KISS co-founder Gene Simmons is coming to the River Rock Casino Resort on July 22—and he’s bringing the entire family. The happily “un-married” star of Gene Simmons Family Jewels will be on stage with Shannon Tweed—former Playmate of the Year, actress and model—and their two children Nicholas and Sophie. In 2006, the family began production on their own reality television show. Now in its sixth season, Gene Simmons Family Jewels revolves around Gene and his family and reflects how the most non-traditional, traditional family in America manages to make it work under the oddest of circumstances.

Date night at American Grille

Food for Thought Arlene Kroeker

T

he American Grille at the corner of Westminster Highway and Minoru Boulevard may be a hotel restaurant, but locals learned long ago that here there’s a convenient, delicious, aesthetically pleasing place to take breakfast, lunch, or dinner. If you are a regular, you already know that the breakfast favourite is PaciďŹ c salmon and eggs; lunch favourite is steak and blue cheese salad; dinner is the

blackened halibut burger or halibut on angel hair pasta. Close seconds are the turkey and avocado sandwich, Sicilian gnocchi, rack of lamb, baby back ribs, steamed mussels, crab cakes, and crab spring rolls. And yes, after reading the list of seafood, I’m pleased to say that American Grille is Oceanwise. What you might not know is that chef Shane Lamb has a new son and the food and beverage manager Taka Kuwata has a new daughter. Their days, they say, are long. In light of new fatherhood, I think they must be reminiscing about the days of yore— when a late night meant a date night—because they’ve come up with the idea of a Date Night Chef’s Table. Every Thursday, beginning May 12 and continuing until June 30, American Grille offers a four-course menu for $35. Chef

Lamb will present each dish and discuss the story behind each plate. This interaction gives customers a chance to meet the chef and ask questions. Chef’s Tables have become popular lately at many restaurants. Dinner menus offer up six to eight courses for up to $120 per person, so it’s clear that there’s value at the American Grille. What’s on the Date Night menu? An amusebouche to start—and that’s a surprise. Lobster Agnelloti with shiitake mushrooms and balsamic ragout, apple

and mascarpone puree, and candied golden beets, followed by Duo of Squab—a caul fat-wrapped breast, leg conďŹ t, potato marrow, baby carrots and pearl onion with blueberry jus. For dessert, enjoy vanilla panna cotta with fresh berries, Grand Marnier sabayon and biscotti. Rumour has it that spot prawns may be on the Date Night menu for the month of June. What else will be on the menu as the season turns to summer is local Richmond fare. See Page 18

sports Fencer looks to climb back to the top

SPORTS EDITOR: Don Fennell Phone: 604 247 3732 E-mail: sports@richmondreview.com

Wrist injury stalled Igor Gantsevich’s Olympic dream by Don Fennell Sports Editor Igor Gantsevich knew something was wrong, but refused to let the pain in his right wrist end his season. So he persevered until learning he’d torn two ligaments. “It was right before the Pan-Ams last July. I felt I couldn’t take time off to let it heal properly,” said the 22-year-old Richmondite who sat out last weekend’s Western Canadian Fencing Championships at the Richmond Olympic Oval to ensure he was healthy for an Olympic and Pan-American Games qualifying tournament this week in Stockholm, Sweden. One of Canada’s most promising fencers, and a member of the national team, Gantsevich didn’t touch a sword for two months after last summer’s injury. But fortunately he was able to get treatment from one of the top hand surgeons in Canada, and about a month ago received a cortisone injection to reduce the inflammation.

“Right now it’s working, but we won’t know if it’s the cure until the cortisone wears off in a few months,” he said. Gantsevich, who helped Canada’s men’s epee team place ninth at the 2010 world championships, hopes to compete in next summer’s Olympic Games in London, England. Having missed the first Olympic qualifier last week in Germany, he hopes to make the grade at this week’s tournament in Sweden. “Physically I feel great, but mentally it’s like any other athlete coming back from an injury. I don’t know what to expect.,” said Gantsevich. “I’m lacking a bit of (practice) now because I only started fencing fulltime again three weeks ago, whereas the other competitors have been fencing six months nonstop.” But overcoming injury isn’t the only hurdle Gantsevich is attempting to clear. He lost all of his federal athlete funding while out of action. That means he has to pinpoint

which competitions to attend because he’s having to pay all the expenses out of his own pocket. Gantsevich estimates the annual expenses, which were all covered by the athlete funding, would add up to $40,000. “They’ve given us two years of full-time highperformance funding, but now only two or three athletes are funded,” he said. “How can Canadian fencers be expected to jump to the level of topfour in the world in just two years, when those countries have an investment of over 50 years?” But Gantsevich isn’t totally discouraged. In fact he’s encouraged by the increasingly popularity of fencing in B.C. and the success of members of the Richmond-based Dynamo Fencing Club, as evident by the 27 medals its athletes collected at the Western Canadian championships. At last year’s westerns held in Edmonton, Dynamo fencers earned 13 medals. “That shows the development of our fencers

and we’re really proud of where we’re going,” Gantsevich said. “And

through outreach programs in the schools and community the sport is

growing really fast. Also, at the provincial level, president John French is

helping the sport grow with participation doubling in the last year.”

Getting encouragement from coach Victor Gantsevich (above right), David Shorey of the Dynamo Fencing Club went on to win three medals.

After waiting nearly six months for their shot at provincial glory, the R.A. McMath Wildcats had to settle for third place at the B.C. AAA high school senior boys’ soccer championships last week. Snow postponed the tournament which was orginally to be played last year. Having won 17 of 19 games during the season, the Wildcats were deserving favourites going into the tournament. But despite outplaying Coquitlam’s Dr. Charles Best through regulation of their semifinal match, the Wildcats were unable to score and lost on a single shot in penalty kicks. Best went on to defeat North Delta 3-2 in the final, while McMath defeated Sentinel 5-2 in the third-place match. “My assistant coach Michael Gilles (also manager and teacher sponsor) and I have coached at McMath for six years, four years with the senior team, and we agree this was the best team we have had—even outdoing last year’s team which ranked No. 1 in the province and placed fifth after losing one game all year in the tournament round-robin,” said coach Mike Quinn. “This team was pure class throughout, ending up with the least number of cards (one) in the tournament,” Quinn said. Grade 11 striker Colin Jacques won the Golden Boot Award as the tournament’s leading scorer with seven goals. Cocaptain Jacob Quail was selected to the all-star team recognizing the top 16 players in the tournament.

Fleury guest speaker at Hockey Day in Richmond by Don Fennell Staff Reporter It’s been 2,000 days and counting since Theo Fleury had his last drink of alcohol. And the former NHL star and Olympic medalist says life keeps getting better and better. “My story is no different than any person who’s gone to the depth of addiction I have, then gets to the point where they say enough is enough,”

he said Saturday during Hockey Day in Richmond. Fleury was the keynote speaker at a youth week event hosted by Richmond Addiction Services and Family Services of Greater Vancouver, which invited young hockey enthusiasts across the Lower Mainland to match skills against players from the Richmond Sockeyes, Delta Ice Hawks and Vancouver Giants.

Honouring Richmond’s youth

E

xceptional youth who work hard to make a difference in the community are truly remarkable. Those who have had a positive impact this past year were honoured by the Around Town City of RichAmanda Oye mond at its annual U-ROC awards at the B.C. Institute of Technology’s Aerospace Technology Campus on May 4. Around 250 people came out “to celebrate the achievement and dedication of youth,” according to Sunny Haer, roving leader with the City of Richmond’s Youth Services. “The awards acknowledge those that have made a significant contribution to youth or their community,” he said. Awards were handed out in three categories: Outstanding Youth, Outstanding Youth Groups and Asset Champions, who are coaches, teachers, volunteers or anyone else who mentors and helps youth. “Everyone who got an award really, really deserved it,” Haer said. Various members of the community nominated individuals and groups who they felt deserved to be recognized for their hard work. Everyone who was nominated won an award, according to Haer. At the end of the night, on top of receiving an Outstanding Youth award, Shira Sneg won a $500 scholarship, which is awarded each year to a senior student who has ambitions of attending postsecondary school and who has been volunteering. RAPS vies for grant The Richmond Animal Protection Society is vying for a $25,000 grant to provide veterinarian care for lowincome pet-owners. The society, which operates the Richmond Animal Shelter, will offer basic veterinarian care, including spay and neuter services to those who can’t afford it—if the project garners enough online votes in the Pepsi Refresh Everything contest. According to the shelter’s Kara Frederick, if more people are able to afford to keep their pets, there will be fewer surrendered and stray animals in the shelter, and if more animals are spayed or neutered, there will be fewer unwanted litters and fewer homeless pets. To vote for the RAPS project, visit refresheverything.ca/ petsandpartners.

Janis Gray said Choi wasn’t found to be carrying a weapon, prompting investigators to speculate about whether the person who tipped them off was simply a rival aware of the amount of drugs he was carrying. Last Thursday, Choi was sentenced to seven years in prison in Richmond provincial court after pleading guilty to possession for the purposes of trafficking. Gray said Choi was well known to local police and had a criminal record.
