Tribunal rules complainant was not averse to talking about sex at workplace by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter A workplace infatuation between the married owner of a local kitchen cabinetry store and a young female employee who was curious about his sex life, was detailed in a salacious case before the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal. It came to a conclusion Monday, when the tribunal’s Murray Geiger-Adams found that 24-year-old Fei Kang’s sexual discrimination complaint against her employer Scott Hill, owner of From Scott to Finish Custom Kitchens on Cambie Road, was not justified. Kang was hired to work as a full-time administrative assistant for Hill in June of 2009, shortly after she graduated from university. About a week after Kang started, Hill’s wife came in to train her, but the session didn’t end well after Hill’s wife became frustrated with juggling work and caring for her two-year-old daughter at the same time. After his wife stormed out, Hill apologized to Kang and made it clear that his wife wasn’t upset with Kang. “Mr. Hill testified that, after Ms. Hill left, Ms. Kang asked him a number of personal questions, including how his sex life was, whether he was truly happy in this marriage, and whether he had really found the right person, or had made a hasty decision he would regret,” the tribunal heard during a two-day hearing last January. A couple of weeks later, Hill confessed that he had developed feelings for Kang. At that point, Hill testified that Kang said asked if it was a sexual attraction and he responded that it was not. “Mr. Hill testified that Ms. Kang went on to ask him, if she just hopped over the desk, tore off her clothes... whether ‘that would be it.’ He testified she stated she was not offended if it was just a shallow sexual attraction.” Hill also compiled a playlist of songs and titled it “Reasons Why I Think You Love Me Too” and handed her a copy, she testified. She described the songs as “incredibly intimate (though) perhaps not sexually.” See Page 3

As a Surrey woman continues her battle for the return of her stolen iPhone from the Apple Store at Richmond Centre, a local criminal lawyer has waded in to offer his opinion on the issue. Jason Tarnow said it appears that the Apple Store did not do its due diligence when taking the stolen iPhone in for a warranty repair without first confirming ownership of the device. “Apple is in possession of stolen property,” Tarnow offered, adding that since police tried to seize the item, and indicated it was stolen, the local Apple Store’s manager obviously knew it was stolen, yet refused to turn over the device. Meanwhile, forum users on the online computer hardware magazine Hardocp.com suggested Apple’s position isn’t surprising or unusual. “My wife found a beat up iPod Touch 32 GB in her classroom last year,” wrote RiPpLeeFFect. “No one came to claim it so at the end of the year, it ended up in my hands. I wiped it out and used it for two weeks before the battery died and it couldn’t hold a charge long enough to boot up. I called support to see if it was under warranty and was able to have a new one sent right out to me. I even told them it was a lost and found item. I now have a brand new replacement in my hands. I would have returned the unit to the original owner, but Apple said they couldn’t give out personal information, but they could transfer the unit to my name. Go figure.” See Page 3

One-fourth of civic workers now earn more than $75,000 Council expenses range from $7.50 to $11,384 by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter City council racked up $44,053 in expenses in 2010 while city hall salaries continued to climb, according to financial statements released Monday. Mayor Malcolm Brodie proved to be the biggest spender on council, claiming $11,384 in expenses, $9,294 worth of benefits and $106,926 in salary. According to information provided by the city, the bulk of Brodie’s expenses came from a trip to Japan and China with the Richmond Sister City Committee. Among councillors, Coun. Linda Barnes expensed the most for the third year in a row, giving taxpayers a bill for $8,815.53. Barnes also travelled overseas on the sister city trip last year, along with councillors Sue Halsey-Brandt and Bill McNulty. Coun. Derek Dang—among Richmond’s eight councillors who each earned $51,406 in salary—had the lowest expense claim of just $7.50. Among city staff, 433 earned over $75,000 last year—a jump of 73 per cent in two years. Last year, 393 staff

met that mark. Richmond’s annual financial report details all wage earners over $75,000, and included in that growing group are 94 senior staffers with six-figure salaries. In all, 1,846 employees earned $96.5 million last year and expensed taxpayers for $1,259,472. In the previous year, the same number of employees earned nearly $3.5 million less and recorded $87,449 less in expenses. Phyllis Carlyle, general manager of law and community safety, won the title for most expenses claimed among civic bureaucrats at $14,856. Three other staffers collected receipts worth more than $10,000: $12,320 for Antonio Simas, web developer; $10,573 for Richard Toda, manager of customer services; and $10,438 for Mike Romas, manager of sport hosting.

Dozens gathered at the Richmond detachment, after the run began at the Canadian Forces Sherman Armoury on No. 4 Road, and wound up at city hall’s courtyard around 1 p.m.

From Page 1 A second list contained reasons why Hill was falling in love with Kang, including that she “got down on her hands and knees to vacuum the floor” and the “way Ms. Kang dressed.” Kang eventually told Hill that she shared none of his feelings, and that she felt the complete opposite. Hill responded with emotional distress, put his arms over his head and said: “I don’t think you can work here anymore.” In the following days, Hill confessed to his wife about the feelings he had for Kang. A short time later, Hill called Kang, apologized for “overreacting” and then proposed a meeting between Kang, Hill and his wife. But that meeting eventually “regressed into accusations and interrogation,” the tribunal heard, and Kang said she felt she had no other choice but to quit. A couple of days later, on Aug. 5, 2009, she filed the complaint. But Geiger-Adams found in Hill’s favour this week. He noted that “Mr. Hill did not proposition Ms. Kang; he expressed feelings for her. There was not a wide age differential between them. There was no physical contact between them. Ms. Kang did not fear for her safety at any time. Mr. Hill did not repeat behaviour that Ms. Kang had communicated was unwelcome.

From Page 1 Added Steve: “Now that is what I call ‘quality customer service.’” MavericK96 wrote: “Wow...Clearly they don’t care if people replace stolen items or not.” Ccmfreak2 wrote he wasn’t surprised. “I hear people talk about how great Apple Care is! This is great??? Someone can walk into an Apple store with a stolen device and have a replacement handed to them? Another person can call up Apple to help locate the owner of a lost device, and instead of finding the original owner, Apple transfers the device into the finder’s name?...Why should I buy stuff from a company that is just going to transfer ownership into the hands of the people who are trying to return it to me, or the people who stole it from me?!” Skinnydaddy offered: “Apple will not do anything if you call claiming the phone was stolen. It takes a huge amount of effort and the media to get any type of response. You can thank the lawyers for that. This is not an excuse for what Apple did/does. This is the way it was explained to me when I used to work support for them. The amount of calls we got for stolen iPhones was staggering but for Apple it was a win win. Stolen iPhones had to be replaced so that was another phone sold or replace (sic) by whatever ins the customer had...The whole iPhone black market was a huge cash cow for them.” Meanwhile, Surrey’s Nicolette Olson isn’t

“I hesitate to characterize Mr. Hill’s behaviour towards Ms. Kang (or her response) as “normal social interaction”, but in all the circumstances established in the evidence I do not think it crossed the line into sexual harassment.” Geiger-Adams went on to write: “She did not invite or intend to encourage Mr. Hill’s sexual or romantic interest in her, but, very early in her employment, she did ask him highly personal questions about his marriage, from which he correctly concluded that she was not averse to discussing such intimate matters in the workplace.” He ruled: “I find that on August 4, Mr. Hill and Ms. Hill both made clear the company’s interest in continuing to employ her. Although I accept that the situation triggered by Mr. Hill’s profession of feelings, and Ms. Kang’s misguided efforts to respond to that profession, were uncomfortable for all three of the principals in this matter, I find that what caused her to quit her employment was not an intolerable environment of sexual discrimination created by Mr. Hill, but his reluctance to give Ms. Kang a substantial raise.” During the meeting with Hill and his wife, Kang had asked Hill to “increase her hourly wage from $14.50 to $17.00, to compensate for what she described as a ‘compromised work environment.’” The decision is availabe online at www. bchrt.bc.ca.

any closer to getting her iPhone back. Despite the assurance by Apple’s senior manager of loss prevention, Steve Perry, that he would get back to her by Monday at the latest, Olson still doesn’t know what if anything is being done. Meanwhile, Mounties in Surrey and Richmond familiar with the file are discussing what other actions they could take on the case where they know who has a valuable stolen item, but can’t seem to seize it.

Staff Reporter After multiple votes and disagreements, city council has found a way to spend $2.5 million in surplus cash collected from taxpayers. Civic politicians had already spent some of the 2010 budget surplus, but agreed on divvying up the remaining money for 24 projects. They include weed maintenance ($145,000), Steveston Tennis Building upgrades ($105,000), an accessible washroom at London Heritage Farm ($80,000), Richmond Cultural Centre parkade maintenance ($70,000) and two

animal control vehicles ($60,000). Planners also had some of their wishes fulfilled: sister city plan ($234,000), dyke master plan ($200,000), animal shelter feasibility study ($50,000) and noise bylaw development ($100,000). Other big ticket items are software and technology projects, totalling over $600,000, and $125,000 for new administrative and financial analyst staff. City council will also spend $41,000 to boost awareness of the November civic election, promote civic engagement and distribute a city election guide that includes candidate profiles. Elected officials put another $500,000 into reserves for future projects.

Billboard-sized election signs are now banned from residential boulevards after city council gave final approval to an election and political signs bylaw Monday. The bylaw continues to allow signs on private property and continues to restrict signs on city land—except for boulevards fronting homes whose owners grant permission. Those signs are now restricted to a size of two-by-three feet (0.6 square metres), effectively banning the larger wood-frame signs along residential streets that city officials say create a

potential safety hazard for traffic. In all other areas where signs are permitted, the maximum size allowed is four-byeight feet (three square metres). Coun. Sue Halsey-Brandt voted against the bylaw, suggesting modernizing rules and regulations around election signs should include opening up certain tracts of municipal land to signs, instead of candidates having to seek out property owners willing to display a sign. New information materials around election signs—for residents and candidates— will now be developed by staff.

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter Candidates hoping to win a seat on city council will be up against a full slate of incumbents in the fall election. So far no sitting councillors have said they’ll abandon civic politics, and all incumbents reached by The Review have plans to run again. One potential ripple could come in the form of Coun. Greg Halsey-Brandt, who this week said he’ll run again but wouldn’t rule out a run at the mayor’s seat. “I’m looking forward to running again,” he simply said. Halsey-Brandt, who served as mayor in the 1990s before leaving for provincial politics in 2001 and returning to council three years ago, said he’s running again to help get a handle on “unsustainable” city spending. “We need to do a little more planning on the financial side. The growth won’t continue forever,” he said. “How are we going to adjust our tax rates to what’s sustainable in people’s pocketbooks?” Halsey-Brandt added the city has fallen behind in building and improving city facilities, saying “serious work” is needed on a seniors centre, pool, library facilities and a main fire hall. “I think the next council has some real heavy-duty work cut out for them,” he said. Mayor Malcolm Brodie didn’t return a call by press time, but is expected to run for his fifth term in the Nov.

19 election. A handful of hopefuls have already declared their intentions to run for the office of councillor, including De Whalen, who was expected to be named this week to the Richmond Citizens Association slate with incumbents Linda Barnes and Harold Steves. Whalen, 59, will be campaigning on social justice issues and preservation of farmland. “People are looking to me to bring those issues to council,” she said. “I think there’s a view that developers have had their way with council over the years and that the kind of housing that we’re seeing, sure it’s residential housing, but it’s really high end.” The longtime East Richmond resident said the city is acting on its affordable housing strategy but isn’t keeping up. “We’re kind of like a bipolar city. We have this look that we’re rich and everybody lives in a mansion and everyone drives a Beemer, but the reality is we have the second highest level of child poverty in Canada.” Michael Wolfe, who last ran for a seat with the Green party in the May federal election, is also seeking a council seat. Others who could run for a council seat include Linda McPhail, a longtime school board chair and current trustee. McPhail, who topped the polls in the school election in 2009, told The Review she’s still “weighing her options.” So is fellow school trustee Carol Day, who finished comfortably in third

place in the 2008 election. Day is an organizer of VAPOR, a citizens’ group opposed to the current jet fuel pipeline proposal. She told the Review she’ll be running again, but hasn’t yet decided for what office. But new candidates do have a tough road ahead. Norman Ruff, political science professor emeritus at University of Victoria, said incumbents have a considerable advantage, especially in civic elections, where voter turnout is low. “Unless there’s a burning local issue in which voters feel their votes count more than ordinarily, then incumbents enjoy the advantage of name recognition, all other things being equal.” Ruff said candidates who do well at breaking into municipal politics are those who are a part of well-established community networks that can help to get the vote out. “People who have roots in the community and are part of an existing social network they can draw on—if not actively campaign, at least through word of mouth—can give them a push up,” said Ruff. Richmond politics isn’t always safe for incumbents. Councillor Cynthia Chen lost narrowly in 2008 and Kiichi Kumagai lost his seat in 2005. Municipal elections are held on the third Saturday of November every three years. One mayor, eight councillors and seven school trustees are to be elected. Other council incumbents are councillors Derek Dang, Evelina Halsey-Brandt,Sue Halsey-Brandt, Bill McNulty and Ken Johnston.

T

he popularity of Apple’s iPhones, iPods and iPads have made them highly sought after in North American electronics stores, and apparently on the black market too. Whenever there’s a new launch of an Apple electronic device— which seems like clockwork, set to ring every six months— there’s usually not enough supply to meet the frenzied demand, thereby triggering an after-market, thought to be fuelled chiefly by people eager to flip these products for a quick profit. Raise the topic with friends, and you’ll find it won’t take long before you hear a familiar refrain about a lost iPod or iPhone4. Read the news, and you’ll come across stories of people trying to purchase Apple products via posts on Craigslist, and then being victimized by a weapon-wielding robber. But there’s growing evidence that although Apple bills itself as makers of premium trendsetting products, the $300 billion company is concerned more about its bottom line than being good corporate citizens. That certainly seems to be the case for Surrey’s Nicolette Olson, who has been pulling out her hair, wondering what she has to do to retrieve her stolen iPhone. She knows exactly where it is,

who has it in their possession, but she’s no closer to getting it back today than four months ago despite getting the police involved. A few months after having her iPhone taken from her home last Halloween, she received an e-mail alerting her to the confounding fact that the brazen thief who’d taken her iPhone—or somebody who’d purchased it afterward—simply waltzed into the Apple Store at Richmond Centre and complained when the device was on the fritz. The iPhone4 was replaced with a new one, no questions asked. One forum user, who heard about the story in last weekend’s Richmond Review, shared how his wife, a teacher, had found an iPod Touch, which remained unclaimed at the end of the school year. Though he tried to track down the owner, Apple hid behind privacy concerns, but was willing to—you might want to sit down for this part—replace the device and put it in his name instead. Apple has perhaps unwittingly created a way for thieves to launder these products, with no chance for investigators to track them down once they get a new device. While Mounties aren’t saying much about thefts of Apple products, this has got to be a head-scratcher and headache. Effectively, Apple Stores are threatening to push pawn shops out of business. Pawn shops

While Mounties aren’t saying much about thefts of Apple products, this has got to be a headscratcher and headache.

are required to take down identification of anybody selling valuables for cash, in the event police need to follow-up on theft investigations. But no such disclosure is necessary at Apple Stores. Why would they do this, you might ask? Setting up a transfer-ofownership system would cost Apple millions of dollars, and

take up thousands of hours of time from support staff and sales clerks at stores. Time that could be spent resolving technical issues, or selling Apple’s pricey fare. And guess what an iPhone4 owner will do when his/her iPhone is stolen? That’s right, they’ll buy a new one. That sound you hear is Apple cashing in on all fronts.

I

recently bought a used vehicle. Bitter experience with used cars sold privately led me to make the purchase at an established, reputable dealership, and I’m pleased with the result. The first car I ever bought was a private sale. A young man showed off the old car he had painted himself, while his mother smiled and offered homemade lemonade. Sold for $600. The choice of drink proved appropriate when the engine clattered to

a final halt a week later. It was then I discovered that the crankcase contained mostly STP Oil Treatment, to conceal the engine’s true state. At the dealership this spring, the harmonized sales tax was not a hot topic. Like most goods, new and used vehicles were subject to 12 per cent PST and GST before, and they are subject to 12 per cent HST now. When I mentioned this in a news report last week, an astute reader in Nanaimo reminded me that it’s not quite that simple. Vehicles, boats and aircraft sold by private individuals are exempt from GST. This was one of the populist concessions the Mulroney government made in an effort to placate angry voters 20 years ago. In B.C., prior to July 2010, private sales were subject to seven-per-cent PST only. During the hubbub over the implementation of the HST in its 2010 bud-

get, the B.C. Liberal government also increased tax on private vehicle sales by five per cent, from seven to 12 per cent. The stated reason was to provide “comparable treatment” for private and commercial sales of used vehicles. This provoked an exchange of partisan accusations that typically passes for debate in the B.C. legislature. It’s a payoff to car dealers, the NDP screamed. You guys opposed all of our income tax cuts and now you’re pretending to support lower taxes, the B.C. Liberals yelled back. Out in the real world, one can observe the effect of a tax structure that gives an advantage to private sellers. Municipal governments call them “curbers.” They use their garage, driveway and street to repair and market an endless series of used cars. Whether they are crooks or not, their efforts are every bit as appealing

to the neighbourhood as the guy with multiple illegal suites whose tenants plug up the parking for the whole block. In each case, they violate zoning rules and hog services for personal benefit. And if you think they pay income or other taxes on their home businesses, I have a 1973 Pinto you might want to test-drive. The subject of used cars came up last week when NDP leader Adrian Dix belatedly launched his own anti-HST tour. Apparently he’s having second thoughts about letting Bill Vander Zalm

set NDP tax policy based on a world government conspiracy theory. Dix’s first media event was staged in a Burnaby kitchen. The homeowner dismissed the $350 HST rebate he has been offered to offset costs such as summer camp for his two kids, saying that will be gone several times over if he buys a used car. This clearly implies that HST has been extended to used cars. This is the sort of claim that drives much of the rage against it, as people simply scan their bills for those hated three letters. There are signs that people understand their taxes better, however. An Angus Reid poll last week found that 58 per cent of British Columbians now prefer to pay taxes on their consumption rather than their income. letters Air Canada is a great place to work – for CEOs Editor: My wife has worked for Air Canada for 25-plus years and her hourly wage has not changed in 10-plus years. In the same 10-year period Air Canada management have received millions of dollars in benefits from the company. In particular check out former chief executive officer Robert Milton’s salary of $14 million per year and the huge benefit he received when he finally left Air Canada and ACE, which adds up to a staggering

$82.7 million. When my wife retires in a couple of years she will receive a pension of approximately $28,000 per year. Compare that amount to the current CEO who will receive an annual pension of $350,000 after only three years with the company. And the Harper government is threatening to legislate an end to the strike. There is definitely something wrong here. John Ethier Richmond

Towards a more sustainable Richmond It is very rewarding to see Richmond residents enjoying our belated Springtime while working in the new community gardens located at the south end of Railway Ave. This garden program is expanding every year and typifies Richmond’s commitment to sustainability as a fundamental approach. A few examples of the City’s drive to sustainability are:

Editor: Re: “Dental industry is regulated,” Letters. The letter writer seems to think that because the college of dentists sets its own fee schedule that this is regulation. It is, but not in the way she seems to think. Doesn’t the Automotive Retailers’ Association use the same kind of “regulation?” Her one conceding sentence says it all: “Dentist fees are discretionary in truth...” The fact is that dentists can charge whatever the heck they please. There is no regulation in the real sense. As for her statement that eight years of post-secondary education are required to become a dentist, the first four years have nothing to do with dentistry. Required is one thing; necessary is something else. The regulation of any trade or profession can only be done by an arms-length, disinterested body, preferably a government body responsible to the legislature. The fox doesn’t make a good guardian of the chicken coop. Garry Simpson Richmond

Who are corporations? Editor: Re: “Tweak the tax system,” June 11. I am pleased to see a young person take interest in such a matter, and have the courage to express an opinion publicly. Congratulations. However I fear the letter writer has not looked at this situation from every angle. I agree we pay too much in taxes. It has been stated, by economists, that for every $1 collected in taxes $1.79 is taken out of the economy. Much of what we pay is wasted in duplication of services and unnecessary spending. No matter where or what taxes are collected, the people that pay are the consumers, you and I. Consider, who are corporations. They are, for the most part, groups of people that have pooled there money and invested it in order to get more income. If they do not get a just return on their investment, they will take that money away, and the company will fail, leaving the employees unemployed. Corporations must have build-

ings, buy equipment, office supplies, machinery, pay for electricity, maintenance and property taxes, all of which add to the economy. If they are taxed higher they would have less money to invest in these things. Without corporations there would be no employment and no goods to buy. I have such investments. I rely on them for most of my income. Otherwise I would be dependent of OAS and CPP These two pensions also invest in corporations, as do private pensions. All of my income comes from such investments. I get more income, I pay more income tax, buy more goods and services, pay more tax. Without it I would be on welfare or living in poverty. I urge the letter writer to delve deeper into any situation that you find interesting. Someone once said. “Never believe anything you hear, and have doubts about what you see, until you have proved it to your own satisfaction.” Lawrence Price Richmond

Cannery looks at First Nations culture

Richmond Youth Service Agency’s Pathways Aboriginal Centre will be hosting National Aboriginal Day in Richmond on Sunday, June 19 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Richmond Cultural Centre. Presentations and entertainment include traditional singing and drumming groups, OSKAYAK Youth Program bannock fundraiser, Kloshe’nem puppet workshop (space is limited) and more.

The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site has several activities planned to help celebrate National Aboriginal Day (June 21), which acknowledges the culture and contributions of First Nations to Canada. On June 22 there will be a demonstra-

tion of the making of traditional First Nations medicine pouches. During the week of June 19-25 visitors touring the Salmon People exhibit, which examines the fishing history of the Coast Salish people, can get a first-hand look with a guide at artifacts relating to the long traditions of the aboriginal fishery along the Fraser. In addition there will be an aboriginalthemed crafts area for kids. The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site of Canada is located at 12138 Fourth Ave. in Steveston. One of the first performers at the Steveston Folk Guild returns tonight to stage a new concert. Brian Robertson, best known for his finely crafted songs about the West Coast, performed at a guild show in 1999. A Powell River native, Robertson’s music comes from the heart and is based on his lifetime of living on the coast, with a life that has included work as a commercial fisherman, cabbie, engineer, economic and historian. Audiences can expect songs about love, travel and the blues, along with some classic shanties. When he’s not making solo appearances, Celtic music is his other passion. Robertson is also a singerguitarist for the Irish Wakers and a frequent guest of the Jocelyn Band. Catch Robertson’s show at Britannia Heritage Shipyard (5180 Westwater Dr.) on June 16 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $8, at the door. Choosing a tie as a Father’s Day gift might still be a popular choice among families, but plenty of local eateries are offering an alternative to the fashion accessory. Whether it’s breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner, many restaurants have special menus purposebuilt to honour dad. At Carver’s Steakhouse (7211 Westminster Hwy.), a four-course Father’s Day dinner is $39 on Sunday, June 19. Designed for carnivores, choice of mains include beef sirloin medallions and black tiger prawns, crab and spinach sea bass or wild northern caribou. At River Rock Casino Resort (8811 River Rd.), the Buffet restaurant is hosting a special Father’s Day buffet brunch, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and dinner, from 5 to 9 p.m. Cost is $29.95 for adults and $14.95 for children (kids under five are free). At the Sheraton Vancouver Airport Hotel (7551 Westminster Hwy.), Harold’s Bistro is hosting a buffet brunch, including an omelette station, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $33 for adults and $17 for children 12 and under (kids under five are free). Radisson Vancouver Airport Hotel’s Fresh Restaurants and Lounge (8181 Cambie Rd.) is offering dads two choices: a Father’s Day brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or a Father’s Day prime rib dinner from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Brunch buffet is $28.95 for adults, children ages six to 10 are $17.95 and seniors are $20.95. Another Father’s Day dining option in Richmond is the Summer Night Market in north Richmond. Open 7 p.m. to midnight on Sunday, the market has dozens of food booths offering everything from barbecue dried squid to bubble tea and honey garlic prawns. —by Matthew Hoekstra

hen we celebrate Father’s Day on June 19th, we will be following in the tradition of Sonora Louise Smart Dodd, who was an American woman who wanted to honour her father, who was courageous, selfless and loving as he nurtured her after her mother had died.

She was convinced that her father, Henry Jackson Smart, was all that God meant for a father to be and since his birthday happened to be on the 19th of June, she chose that date to be called Father’s Day. Not everyone will feel as Mrs. Dodd did about her father, in

fact, for countless the day may well spark painful memories of abusive, absentee or uncaring fathers. Fatherless America was coined by David Blankenhorn who writes that a lot of our social ills in our society stem from this lack of affirming, loving fathers. Chuck Colson who has worked with countless prisoners for many years, claims that the one factor that marks most of the men he has worked with in prisons is the lack of a father. Fathers have often been disenfranchised or marginalized or even thought of as being superfluous by well meaning women’s groups, the media, movies, jokes and even in our language. We often interpret words such as authority, hierarchy, ecclesiastical government as negative. In fact, a number of books such as The Broken Image and Crisis in

Masculinity write about the lack of a father’s affirmation being the cause of gender confusion in both men and women. Many of our social ills such as our young men turning towards violence. Or males that do not respect and care for women and children, but use them as sex objects, we need to view good fathers as a great gift to our society. Most places of worship need to do more in teaching and mentoring good role models in fathers. Where a family includes a father’s love, children’s capacity to grow up as stable and contributing adults is greatly enhanced. We have been celebrating Father’s Day now for over one hundred years. May we also learn to honour the amazing fathers where we can, throughout the year. Happy Father’s Day!

Make Dad happy with less traditional Father’s Day fare Getting ready to gift Dad for Father’s Day? To those heading to the menswear department of their local clothing stores, do not even think about veering toward the tie display. Doesn’t Dad deserve something a little more than a necktie? Every year kids (and their moms) fret over what to purchase for the special man of the house. Maybe Dad has a hobby or interest that makes gifting easy. Too often, however, figuring out a Father’s Day present can be a challenge. Although neckties top the list of go-to gifts, chances are Dad wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t unwrap one this year. Instead, think about these less-cliche gifts: •“Of the month” club: Enroll Dad in one of those series subscriptions that sends him a new item to try every month. From fruit to books, there are many opportunities to find something he’ll enjoy. Plus, this shows Dad he’s special more than one day during the year.

•Food basket: If the “way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” a gift basket filled with his favorite treats will be a winner. Look for specialty items that he enjoys but seldom buys. •Sports game: Buy tickets to attend a game when Dad’s favorite sports team will be playing. Wrap the tickets with some team memorabilia, like a new hat or T-shirt. •Dinner for two: Although Father’s Day is to celebrate the special bond Dad has with his children, a father who often sacrifices his time to be with the kids may not have many private moments with the other special person in his life. Arrange dinner reservations for two. •Something to make chores easier: Think about the chores that Dad does but may not enjoy. Arrange for an easier way to get those chores done. For the father who doesn’t relish mowing and tending to the lawn, reserve a lawn-care service for a month or two to ease Dad’s workload.

Some read their newspaper. Others fiddle with their makeup. A few even have their dogs sitting on their lap. They’re all examples of distracted driving, and for volunteers from the South Arm Crime Prevention Unit, they are the focus of a clampdown. Deployed at various locations throughout the city, the crime prevention unit takes note of the E N org FRE ISSIOTRATION: snorg. e S M I @ AD REG info H WIT ailing m by e

Violent crime down There’s been a nearly 14 per cent drop in violent crime through April compared to the same period a year ago, according to RCMP statistics supplied to the City of Richmond in a report this week to its safety committee. The number of robberies, assaults, assaults with a weapon and sexual offences were down 13.9 per cent, from 560 to 482. While assaults dropped 12.2 per cent and sexual offences were down 30.3 per cent, robberies rose 33.3 per cent and assaults with a weapon were up four per cent. Property crime levels also took a dip, down 9.7 per cent, compared to a year ago. The notable exception was residential break-ins, which were up 36.3 per cent through the end of April this year compared to last year. All down were: business break-ins (26.3 per cent), theft from motor vehicles (27.9), theft of motor vehicles (12.2), metal theft (40.9) and drug-related crime (9.3 per cent).

A letter is then sent to the registered owner of the vehicle the driver was using, serving as a warning of the possible fines the driver faces should he or she be caught by a police officer. —by Martin van den Hemel

Enough suspects to fill a football stadium

4000 different perennials, shrubs, vines and groundcovers, exciting workshops, special events, a design service, a great website and friendly, knowledgeable staff.

I needed a stress buster so I settled in with a light little novel called To Have and to Kill: A Wedding Cake Mystery by Mary Jane Clark. Much to my surprise it was a delightful romp ďŹ lled with loads of larger than life characters and tons of twists and turns. And fun? In spades. The main character

is Piper Donovan, a 27-year old struggling actress who leaves her apartment in New York to move back in with her parents in New Jersey. Talk about a recipe for disaster! We all know that nothing good can come from that. Recently “killed off from her daytime soap opera gig and at loose ends, Piper agrees to help out her mom, who owns The Icing on the Cupcake bakery. Meanwhile, Piper’s soap opera co-star, the beautiful and wildly rich Glenna Brooks, announces her engagement to Casey Walden, a teacher at the private school where Glenna’s daughter attends. She asks Piper if she’ll make her wedding cake, and no sooner does Piper agree than dead bodies start piling up. Between the threatening letters to Glenna and the cyanide poisoning of Glenna’s close friend, it seems that somebody

wants to stop this wedding big time. Is it Casey’s rich brother Arthur who doesn’t particularly like Glenna? Maybe it’s Glenna’s ex-husband, Phillip, the convict. Or could it be Jessie, the teacher who previously had a ing with Casey and still holds a torch for him? Or perhaps it’s Mr. Mustard in the drawing room with the wrench. SufďŹ ce it to say that there are enough suspects in this frivolous, lightweight mystery to ďŹ ll a football stadium. While the clues and red herrings are plentiful they’re not exactly subtle, but they are entertaining. And naturally, motive runs rampant. As for foreshadowing – there’s enough of it to scare off Punxsutawney Phil. Shelley Civkin is with Richmond Public Library. Follow Shelley’s blog at shelleysblog.yourlibrary. ca.

auto review Ford Fusion Hybrid is economical and fun by Lorne Drury Special to Black Press If you’re a little leery of trying something as high-tech as a hybrid, the Ford Fusion Hybrid may be worth a look. Already one of the most popular mid-size cars on the market, the Fusion Hybrid uses a proven powertrain system that combines the best attributes of the gasoline engine and electric battery-driven motors to deliver both driving performance and great fuel economy. In fact, the Fusion Hybrid is rated the most fuelefficient mid-size sedan in the country, boasting a city rating of 4.6L/100 km and highway 5.4L/100 km. That allows you to drive more than 1,125 kilometres on a single tank of fuel. It’s enough to make you want to shout, “Take that to the bank all you oil companies!” With the Fusion Hybrid, you get a 2.5-litre Atkinson Cycle inline four-cylinder engine that works in conjunction with a permanent magnet AC-synchronous electric motor. Combined, the hybrid system produces 191 net horsepower, making the Fusion Hybrid anything but a slug bug on the road if there comes a time when you need that extra power. But in the city where stop-and-go driving eats up precious fuel and produces so much unnecessary emissions, the Fusion Hybrid shines. It can operate at up to 76 km/h in pure electric mode, which is twice the speed that many competitors top out in electric mode.

RICHPORT

The 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid offers the best highway fuel economy in the mid-size segment with a Natural Resources Canada rating of 4.6L/100 km.

FORD LINCOLN

The transition between gas and electric modes is almost seamless with the Fusion. With some hybrids, the transition from one mode to another is quite noticeable, not so with this vehicle. It operates just like any other car, without the noise of course when you’re working on battery power. Simply turn the key, wait for the dash to light up, put the shift lever into gear and off you go. With a hybrid, you will operate on the battery until more power is required than your electric system can supply. Of all the hybrids on the road, this is one of my favourites because it’s actually fun to drive and offers a touch of performance to go along with the superb fuel economy. However, the price of going green does come at an $8,000 premium. A similarly equipped SEL gas-powered model starts at just $26,199. But for those who would rather see their hard-earned cash go towards making this planet a cleaner and greener place rather having more of it go to the oil companies, the Fusion Hybrid makes a lot of sense.

Hyundai’s new flagship takes on high-priced competition by Neil Moore Special to Black Press “Sixty-three grand for a Hyundai?,” they’d ask. “That’s only the ‘base’ model,” I’d reply, “if you want the super-deluxe, top-top-of-the-line Equus, that’ll cost you $70K.” Friends and colleagues would then leave, scratching their heads, questioning the sanity of those at Hyundai who have, until now, been making decisions that have taken the company from the market share basement a couple of decades ago to number seven in the U.S. and number five in Canada, while selling 3,612,487 units globally in 2010. But then again, I also questioned the Genesis sedan, which won Canadian Car of the Year for 2009. “The Equus isn’t intended to lead the sales charts,” said John Vernile, VP of Marketing at Hyundai Auto Canada. “Our primary goal in bringing the car to market was to help redefine the perception Canadians have of Hyundai by showing we can build a car that stands toeto-toe with the world’s best luxury automakers. “At the same time, we’d like to attract some smart luxury buyers who equate luxury with the experience of owning and driving a unique vehicle, not the badge affixed to the hood.” Thus far, these ‘smart’ luxury buyers are small in number with 27 Equus sedans delivered since early 2011 until the end of April. The company expects to sell 100 in Canada by year end – and is on target to do so. These numbers may seem insignificant, but I believe this says more about brand perceptions and the need to wear the ‘right’ nameplate than it does about the vehicle’s quality and value for the dollar. The Equus is Hyundai’s most expensive vehicle, starting $13,000 above the top-trim Genesis. The two share the same platform, but at 7.2 inches longer, this two-ton-plus sedan is both larger and heavier. And it’s being aimed at some lofty competition: the Lexus LS 460, BMW 750i, Mercedes-Benz S550 and Audi A8. It may not be fair to compare the Equus against all aspects of these vehicles, but it’s thousands less than any of them.

But that’s twenty grand below the Lexus and $60,000 less than the Mercedes. In terms of size and power, the Equus is competitive. At its heart is Hyundai’s 4.6-litre V8 engine, a two-time Ward’s 10 Best Engine winner, mated to a ZF six-speed automatic with Shiftronic, that delivers 385 hp and 333 lb/ft of torque on premium fuel. Although Lexus and Mercedes both deliver more torque than the Equus, it will be receiving a new powerplant for 2012. This 5.0-litre Tau V8, Hyundai’s most powerful engine ever, will pump out 429 horses and 376 lb/ft. This kind of product and support goes a long way towards placing Hyundai at or near the top of many automotive shopping lists.

The Equus is Hyundai’s most expensive vehicle, with size, power and amenities rivaling luxury sedans costing thousands of dollars more. Pictured here is the base ‘Signature’ model, starting at $62,999.

Don Fennell photo Vancouver Whitecaps FC drew 1,100 fans to Minoru Park last Canada Day for their W-League game versus Santa Clarita. The ’Caps will play the expansion Victoria Highlanders FC this July 1. Richmond Fish-i-pop under-14 Broncos placed second in the B.C. section of the NFL Canada Flag Football League championships last weekend in Kelowna.

Young Broncos impressive in NFL flag football final by Don Fennell Sports Editor The Richmond Fish-i-pop Broncos were the youngest team in the B.C. under-14 finals of the NFL Canada Flag Football League last weekend in Kelowna. They were also one of the best, placing second to Okanagan Mission Eagles in the championship game. The 18-6 setback was only the Raiders’ fourth loss in 31 games since the season began in April. “We had a great year,” said Bobby Singh, who coached the Broncos with former B.C. Lions’ teammate Cory Philpot.

Singh’s son Bobby Jr. and Philpot’s sons Tyson and Jalen were part of the eight-player squad which also featured Tyler Moxin, Ricky Reed, Cody Hoegg, Reign Curz and Justice Antenen-Thomas. Five of the players are aged 12 or younger. “When you get to under-16 or under-18 you can go on to compete in the Canadian championships, and even go on to compete in the worlds,” said Singh. “It’s outstanding.” Originally an in-school program, NFL flag football is now a community-based core recreation program. Each year thousands of boys and girls

are introduced to the fundamentals of football, including running, throwing and defence. “It’s an opportunity for the kids to work on their skills and conditioning and it teaches discipline too,” said Singh of the five-on-five game. Games are 30 minutes and played on a field 50-yards long and 25 yards wide. Starting on their own five yard line, teams are given three downs to reach midfield to get a new set of downs. Six points are awarded for a touchdown, with one point for a convert five yards from the end zone and two points from 12 yards out.

Whitecaps women returning July 1 by Don Fennell Sports Editor A provincial rivalry will highlight the return of the Vancouver Whitecaps FC to Minoru Park July 1. The ’Caps, 5-1-1 in W-League play this season, will host Victoria Highlanders FC at 7 p.m. The ’Caps defeated the Highlanders 2-0 May 15.

The MacHoops are Basketball BC champions. The under-15 team from Richmond defeated South Burnaby Metro Club 59-40 to win the B Division club title Sunday at the Langley Events Centre. “The key to our success is that we have humble kids who are gym rats and really enjoy playing with each other,” said Steward Siy, who coaches the MacHoops along with Landon Dy. “To quote Aristotle: the whole is definitely greater than the sum of our parts.” The MacHoops were 2-0 in pool play beating Chilliwack Selects and Golden Ears Elite. They

then defeated Mission Heat in the semifinals. The MacHoops came off winning the North Delta Assault tournament the previous weekend, and will be participating in the Best in the West July 15 to 17. The MacHoops are: Ali Tung, Andy Cheng, Anil Subasioglu, Chris Tsang, Denzel de Jesus, Johnny Li, Jonathan Qian, Joshua Rivera, Matthew Sims, Miki Macapagal, Nathan Tomas, Sean Wang and Umar Tung. •Several Richmond players have been selected to Team B.C. squads that will compete in various tournaments this summer. They include: Jamie Madewan (Palmer) U16 boys; Arnold Macalipay (McRoberts) U15 boys; Gurjit Pooni (Palmer) U15 boys; Peony Wong (MacNeill) U14 girls; and Aliya Prasad (Boyd) U14 girls.

Admission to the women’s game is $12, with advance tickets $10 through richmondgirlssoccer.com which include admission to a Whitecaps men’s residency team game versus Victoria at 3:30 p.m. The Whitecaps’ residency team features Richmond players Caleb Clarke, Carlos Marquez and Declan Rodriguez.

“It’s worth putting the effort in to host this game because it shows all the local players what level they can (strive to) be at,” said event organizer Stew MacPherson. This year’s game coincides with the Provincial A Cup for boys and girls July 2 and 3 at Hugh Boyd Park featuring the Richmond Red Hot Selects under-16 girls’ team.

> OpenRoad Lexus grand opening at Richmond Auto Mall

OpenRoad rolls out new dealership

F

ancy cars and great entertainment were the centre of attention at the grand opening of the new OpenRoad Lexus dealership at Around Town the RichAmanda Oye mond Auto Mall last Thursday evening. The dealership was bursting at the seams with over 1,000 guests. From humble beginnings, it is now the largest and most modern Lexus dealership in Canada. “When we started in Richmond it was just dykes,” said Christian Chia, the president and CEO of OpenRoad Auto Group. “We have grown with the community,” he said. They wanted to create a benchmark with the new dealership, according to Chia. To celebrate the evening he got into the rare 2012 Lexus LFA that was on display and turned it on and revved the engine for the crowd who cheered him on. The evening was not short on entertainment. There were stilt walkers, circus performers, musical performances and Japanese art on display. There was a line that stretched across the room and out the doors for sushi made by Tojo’s Restaurant, including a special Lexus roll made for the occasion. Guests also enjoyed food by OnePlanet Catering. The event raised around $300 for the Make a Wish Foundation through a silent auction. Amanda Oye covers the social scene for The Review.
