Liberal party ‘in the ditch’ says minister George Abbott’s visit to Richmond school brings talk of leadership by Christine Lyon

Lori Bazso photo Walter Lee Elementary’s Reneet Dhillon holds a time capsule to be opened tomorrow, its contents still a mystery to fellow students (from left) Noya Telias, Rylee Sagert and Michael Hori.

Time capsule opening marks milestone Walter Lee celebrates 50 years Friday with a special event and a capsule from ‘85 by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter Walter Lee elementary school will be celebrating its 50th anniversary this Friday, and organizers of the planned festivities are inviting past and present students to come out and join the fun. The school will be opening its doors so former students can walk down memory lane and peruse pictures and displays

from each decade, and reconnect with former classmates and friends. The school’s open house begins at 5:30 p.m. with a special welcome in the gymnasium and the fun will wrap up at 7:30 p.m. At 6:15 p.m., a time capsule created in 1985 will be opened. Group photos of students from each decade will be taken every 15 minutes. “The time capsule was created 25 years

ago and it’s been hidden for 25 years. We actually have the principal of the school at the time the capsule was created coming back. We’ve given him the honour of opening it up when he comes back,” said Huey Wong, vice-principal at Walter Lee. Those planning to attend are encouraged to RSVP by calling school secretary Laura Lewis at 604-668-6269 and leaving a message on the phone with one’s name and decade.

Police mum after incident in field behind school by Martin van den Hemel

Staff Reporter Police surrounded a large portion of a grass field with tape Monday morning following a weekend incident behind the Richmond International High School and College on Odlin Crescent, just west of Garden City Road. An RCMP vehicle sat in the middle of the field with its engine running, while two other RCMP cruisers were parked nearby. According to a worker at the college, the property has been surrounded since some sort of police incident early Monday morning or late Sunday night.

Two orange pylons were positioned next to two small yellow tarps that appeared to be covering something a short distance from where the cruiser was idling. A police investigator took photographs from the roof

of the college, and appeared to be looking for something. But aside from saying there had been a police incident, the worker said police have remained tight-lipped. RCMP Const. Tammy Lyn

Fares falling short for TransLink Transit riders aren’t paying as much as TransLink banked on this year. A new financial report shows the average fare paid per rider declined last year and has held steady so far in 2010 despite the 10 per cent fare increase that took effect in April. One theory is fare evasion is on the rise—possibly due to the tough financial times over the past 18 months.

And it might not be passengers blatantly boarding without paying, but more who are paying for one zone when they’re riding through two or more. A Fare Revenue Task Force has been struck to investigate and TransLink meanwhile has stepped up fare checks and enforcement on the buses and SkyTrain.

Local teacher wins Governor General’s literary award Richmond’s Wendy Phillips won the Governor General’s literary award for literature for her poetic work Fishtailing during a ceremony in Montreal on Tuesday morning. The award comes with a $25,000 prize and Phillips will be presented the award by Governor General of Canada David Johnston during a ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 25 at Rideau Hall. Phillips is a teacher-librarian at A.R. MacNeill Secondary. She was informed last month that she’d been shortlisted for the prize, and has been floating on cloud nine ever since, according to her

husband Ted Sharples. Phillips has been an educator in Richmond for 17 years, and couldn’t believe the news when her University of B.C. master’s professor informed her she’d been shortlisted. “My publisher had an old phone number for me so I didn’t actually hear from the Canada Council about the award,” Phillips told The Richmond Review last month. Fishtailing was one of five books nominated for the award in the children’s literature category. Phillips is the only B.C. winner this year.

It’s been a big year so far for the local construction industry, which with two months still left in 2010, has already set a construction value record. More than $769 million worth of construction is underway in Richmond thanks to 1,511 building permits through the end of October. Last year saw just $163 million in construction, and the previous record occurred in 2006, at $658 million. “This is great news for Richmond as it translates in new industrial, commercial and residential projects in our community,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “The new projects include affordable housing units, market rental secondary suites in single family homes, a new daycare facility and a number of new public amenities.” Major projects such as the massive IKEA store expansion contributed significantly to the year’s results so far, but another factor was the rush by developers to push forward some projects to this year before a rise in development cost charges this fall. The major projects this year include: •Onni Development’s residential project at Elmbridge and Hollybridge, which includes 234 condos, 70 live-work homes, 20 affordable low-end rentals, and about 67,000 square feet of ground-floor retail, including room for a large grocery store; • I K E A’s 3 5 0 , 0 0 0 square-foot store relocation and redevelopment which will see the store’s staff increase to 535 and provide 1,400 parking spots and $133,000 in public art and 536 new trees; •A new cranberry processing plant in East Richmond, which will replace the current facility on No. 6 Road; •Broadmoor shopping centre’s expansion which will include 20,000 square feet of first-floor commercial space, 59 condos and nine two-storey townhouses. The City of Richmond has collected about $37.6 million in development costs charges so far this year.

opinion Parliament is proper forum

O

n Tuesday, Stephen Harper’s Conservative government announced Canadian troops will stay in Afghanistan for an extra three years. The Canadian military will apparently be taken off the battlefield and move to a training role. Nonetheless, the decision is in spite of a parliamentary resolution that stated Canada would end its combat role in the hopelessly wartorn country by the end of 2011. In addition, Harper has stated that there is no need for a vote in the House of Commons on any extension of Canada’s activity in Afghanistan. The government is wrong. Canada has invested a lot in Afghanistan, through financial aid and in particular, through our military mission there, which has been underway for close to nine years. This is the longest war commitment by Canada in its history—three years longer than our commitment during the Second World War. Our biggest and most emotional investment has resulted from the tragic loss of Canadian lives there. Because of the enormous amount of money, military energy and emotional energy invested in this mission, it deserves a full and honest discussion in Parliament. Yes, it is true that the Bloc Quebecois will be naysayers, and it is highly unlikely that the NDP will support any Afghan mission extension. However, both the Liberals and Conservatives suggest there are good reasons to be involved in aid and training until 2014, and all perspectives on this deserve to be heard in the House of Commons, the proper place for such subjects to be discussed.

Reason can still prevail on HST

.C.’s first-ever citizen initiative ballot question couldn’t be much simpler. Next Sept. 24, those voters who take the time to head down to the polling booth will check Yes or No to the following:

“Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)?” When Premier Gordon Campbell announced a few weeks ago that the government would abide by a simple majority vote, I said it would be “mission impossible” for the HST to survive. Its chances may now have improved from “none” to “slim.” The question at least frames the only practical choice. Keep the HST or go back to sales tax status

quo, without the refund that petitioner Bill Vander Zalm conjured up to attract signatures. I asked Finance Minister Colin Hansen about the question, the fate of the proposed refund and the impact of the 15 per cent personal income tax cut imposed by the outgoing premier. Hansen agreed that it’s important to have a simple question, although the implications for the economy go far beyond the tax at the bottom of your sales slip. As for the supposed refund, Vander Zalm’s proposed “HST Extinguishment Act” calls for the old PST to be restored retroactive to last July, with any extra tax collected under the new system repaid on an averaged basis. “But in fact what happens this year is that we would collect slightly less under the HST system than we would have collected had the PST system continued in place,” Hansen said. “So there would not be any extra revenues to the province, and therefore the whole thing is moot.” Making the PST retroactive would also mean somehow collecting back taxes on 15 months worth of expenditures that are reduced under HST, such

In short, Vander Zalm’s proposal can’t be done, and the refund he dangled doesn’t exist. It’s too bad more people didn’t understand this before they signed the petition. as disposable diapers, hotel rooms and business phone services. This would be administratively as well as politically impossible. In short, Vander Zalm’s proposal can’t be done, and the refund he dangled doesn’t exist. It’s too bad more people didn’t understand this before they signed the petition. So if you vote Yes next fall, you will still pay the federal GST, and you will get back some form of the old PST, once the provincial government rehires hundreds of tax staff transferred to the federal government. A finance ministry briefing memo, released last week, points out that if B.C. flip-flops and brings back the PST, businesses might leave the province. Some firms that signed contracts based on HST input tax credits may sue

the government to recover their losses. B.C.’s reputation as a stable place to invest will be damaged. Then there is the personal income tax cut, which like the HST is intended to attract investment and jobs. Hansen has already notified the Canada Revenue Agency of the 15 per cent reduction, so the income tax deducted from your paycheque will be reduced starting Jan. 1. That tax cut will put about $600 million a year into the B.C. consumer economy, a stimulus that will show up in government revenues. But the ministry forecasts it will be several years before growth fills the revenue hole. Hansen insisted that even with the income tax cut, the B.C. government can still get out of deficit by 2013 and have some “flexibility” in this spring’s budget. All this of course rests on the assumption of an economy growing and recovering from recession. Indulging in the latest wacky B.C. political protest would almost certainly weaken that recovery. Editor: I’d like to offer congratulations to the volunteers who organized the reception after the Remembrance Day ceremony at city hall. It was wonderful to see how many people (of every generation), participated and how happy they were to warm up and spend some time talking. Thanks also to Tim Hortons for providing refreshments, the Friends of Richmond Archives for their displays, and to the students of R.C. Palmer choir whose voices were beautiful. A thought for next year—is there a particular reason that the cenotaph is situated on the corner of Granville Avenue and No. 3 Road? It was very difficult to see the ceremony and it occurred to me that perhaps it could be moved to the south side of the building where the steps would provide seating for the everincreasing crowds. Invitation to Courtyard Gardens well received Editor: A great big thank you to Richmond High School for inviting the residents of Courtyard Gardens to attend their Remembrance Day ceremony on Nov. 10. The school did an excellent job of this ceremony and I could not have been prouder to attend it. I have to admit I did shed a few tears—the orchestra was wonderful, the choir was just great, the cadets were super and all of the students did all of their jobs very well. Jean Bryan Richmond

Editor: Magnficent, not monstrosity. Wind Waves is my favourite public art in Richmond. I never tire of its organic form and exhilarating colour as I head out along the paths of Garry Point. In fact, it is like a magnet. I think I have photographed it from 100 different angles and probably will from 100 more.

The undulating curves and the spaces they create frame the sky and vista, while magically filtering the long lights of morning and evening, Wind Waves engages the public, who touch it, play on and within its form, and even climb on it to sit and observe the passersby and sunsets. Personally, I am ardently hoping that this magnificent Vancouver Biennale work

will remain where it is. I am strongly advocating for the city to purchase Wind Waves for permanent installation at its current perfect setting. I urge you to contact city hall and add your positive voice in favour of keeping this wonderful addition to Richmond’s public art collection. Brittani Faulkes Steveston

Most elderly residents have no knowledge of this plan and Chinese-Canadian residents struggle to understand the subtle meanings of city hall proposals. time is long overdue to redesign the extent of the powers of our elected officials. A good start would be to require citizen electronic voting on capital expenditures above $2 million, electronic voting on twoyear budget proposals providing options where our money is to be spent, and comprehensive voting on items like the 2041 official community plan. Electronic voting would put the “demo” back into “democracy.” John McCrossan Richmond

Concord Pacific brings a new neighbourhood to life in a growing, vibrant City Centre

November 18, 2010

Get in on a new community Missed out on Yaletown? Second chance at Park Place Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither was Metro Vancouver. In fact, Yaletown didn’t even exist 15 years ago. Now, it houses some of the priciest real estate in the local market – and throughout the entire country – while remaining a residential downtown mecca for fashionable boutiques, trendy lounges, chic restaurants and upscale businesses. So it’s no wonder that Concord Pacific, a developer of multi-phased, master-planned residential communities including Concord Pacific Place on the former Expo 86 lands, is turning to one of the fastest-growing cities in Canada: Surrey. Recently named by the Real Estate Investment Network of Canada as the number-one place to invest in real estate in B.C. and the fourth-best city in Canada, Surrey the second-largest city in B.C. behind Vancouver. With about 800 people moving to Surrey every month, the city is set to rival the City of Vancouver’s population within 20 years, according to the City of Surrey website. Concord Pacific is bringing its Park Place community to life in its City Centre region, an area that is undergoing a massive revitalization to enhance the many amenities and homes in the neighbourhood. The construction of Park Place – two 36-storey concrete construction residential towers with commercial/mixed-use space, connected with a common podium/amenity area – adds to a number of significant construction projects underway in Surrey City Centre, including the Simon Fraser University campus expansion, the RCMP E Division Headquarters (2013 completion), Surrey Memorial Hospital (2014), the new City Hall (2013) and Surrey’s Civic Library (2011), among other large-scale infrastructure and transportation improvements. “Concord Pacific is one of our key partners as we create B.C.’s next great metropolitan centre,” Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts says, in a release about the Concord Pacific development. “The Park Place project will help create a vibrant, livable urban community in City Centre.” When both towers are complete – the second tower is expected to be finished by this time next year – the 698 suites will offer sweeping views

from its units, which range in size from 529 to 924 square feet. Homes come in one-bedroom, one-bedroom-plus-flex, two-bedroom and two-bedroom-plus-workstation floorplans, and they’re affordable: prices start from $209,000. Some two-bedroom plans – even on the 34th floor with amazing views – are priced under $300,000. “For us, it’s a no-brainer,” says Peter Udzenija, project marketing manager. “There’s so much infrastructure already in place. The demand for housing in the area is huge, and it’s supported by government, education and health care – none of those three are going to dwindle.” With King George SkyTrain station at its doorstep, Park Place is in a central location surrounded by green space that is loaded with current and proposed community amenities, plus the rental and resale potential is enormous, especially with thousands of new professional jobs being created in the region, Udzenija notes. The homes are fantastic to live in, with efficient floorplans that maximize every inch of living space and large balconies to take in the views. “Every single suite has a balcony – in some suites, the balcony is over 100 sq. ft.,” Udzenija

says, and notes Park Place is drawing a wide range of homebuyers, people of all ages and from all over Metro Vancouver. “Nothing faces a back alley. You have views all the way around.” Expansive windows let natural light reign inside; kitchens are modern and sleek, with two choices of colour schemes and Corian countertops. Bathrooms come with soaker tubs, porcelain tile flooring and limestone or marble countertops. The amenities shared by the two buildings include a bowling alley – a popular hit in other Concord Pacific projects, a billiards/games room, a theatre, a meeting room, change rooms, steam rooms, a fully equipped fitness facility and a yoga/Pilates room. On the podium level, residents have access to a barbecue area, an indoor and outdoor lounge and an event kitchen. The homes in Park Place I – the first tower – are nearly sold out and sales are opening for the second tower Nov. 27. And Concord Pacific isn’t stopping there. “We’re looking at more sites in Surrey. Obviously, we believe in the area,” Udzenija says, but notes that, at Park Place, “this is the last chance to get in at the beginning of a new community.” Visit www.parkplaceliving.ca for details.

ith the increased availability and affordability of digital cameras, even the most amateur of photographers can own professional-quality equipment. But without proper training, their final pictures could look like they came from a bottomof-the-line point-and-shoot camera. Richmond’s Whitebox Studios is hoping to tap into the growing amateur photography market, and is toying with the idea of offering classes to hobbyists. “In Richmond, we’re quite affluent. There’s a lot of people here with three or four thousand dollar cameras, but they can’t shoot to save their life,” says Whitebox owner Jacob Ung. “We have what we call ‘posers,’ which are just guys with big cameras—but we wouldn’t mind if we could teach those

guys with big cameras to shoot.” The longtime photographer opened up his Bridgeport Road studio last year after seeing a lack of fully-equipped photography space in Richmond. Previously, he had to rent out empty warehouses or travel to Vancouver to find a clean, comfortable shooting place. Almost everything in Ung’s 2,000-square-foot facility is stark white, from the leather lounge furniture to the makeup room lights. A dressing room, production office, kitchenette, washroom and shower complete the fully-outfitted site. The 1,000-square-foot shooting room features white walls and floors, 16-foot ceilings, a cove wall, loading door, and plenty of natural light from west-facing windows. Among the studio’s lighting gear is an eight-foot Profoto umbrella, which acts like an indoor sun, eliminating pesky shadows and glare. The climate controlled space

Christine Lyon photo Karla Lim and Jacob Ung of Richmond’s Whitebox Studios pose with their miniature cove wall.

reduces the need for makeup touch ups. “When you’re shooting with a lot of hot lights, by the end of an hour’s worth of shoot everybody’s sweating,” Ung says. While hobbyists and students looking to build their portfolios are welcome to rent the space, most of Whitebox’s current business comes from commercial customers. Major clients include Honda Canada, Gearheads and Kumho Tires.

It’s not unusual for Whitebox to have a $400,000 vehicle on site. Recently, a white Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X with a graphic camouflage pattern, custom designed by Ung, was in the spotlight. Not limited to auto companies, Whitebox also hosts fashion and glamour photographers. This past summer, the studio held a fashion show for Vancouver designer Angela Chen.

R&B singer Elise Estrada has posed inside Whitebox and Filipino songstress Joey Albert did a shoot promoting Times Telecom. Hollywood stars Owen Wilson and Jack Black also stepped foot in the studio while recently in town filming The Big Year. “They basically came and rented our space just to use the washrooms,” Ung laughs. Across the driveway from Whitebox is Ung’s affiliated business, Blitzgear Inc. The graphic works company has created catalogues for Richmond’s Far West Outdoor Apparel, and is mocking up packaging for new Richmond coffee company Organo Gold. “They have products that aren’t out yet, so we’re creating fake products for them, and then shooting them, so by the time the products are ready all the marketing is ready to go.” Ung says customers like the one-stop-shop atmosphere of Whitebox and Blitzgear. “Most design houses only design, most guys who do the marketing only do the marketing, most of the guys who do print only do print. We take the best out of everything and do it all ourselves,” he says. An estimated 70 per cent of

Whitebox’s business comes from Richmond clients. “We hope that we can find more Richmond-based businesses because we do lose a lot of work, especially to Vancouver and Toronto, mainly because of proximity.” Studio manager and Richmond resident Karla Lim has observed more and more amateur photographers popping up around Lulu Island. “For the last few years there has been a crazy influx of photographers,” she says. For her, it’s a golden business opportunity. The graphic-designer-turned-photographer knows the importance of practical experience when it comes to snapping the perfect picture. “I know even if I do read a book or go online and research, without actually practising I wouldn’t be able to know how the lights work.” With the weather turning cold and wet, Lim says Whitebox offers a warm alternative to outdoor shooting—complete with natural light. Half-day rental rates range from $200 for creative use to $450 for commercial clients. Student discounts apply. “We want to encourage more of the photographers in town to shoot in here,” Lim says. Don’t forget the mung beans

Arlene Kroeker

A

s Annie Kara recited the recipe, I jotted it down on a scrap piece of paper—a list of ingredients and no instructions other than “hot oil” and “40-45 minutes.”

I never did rewrite the recipe and the paper is now stained yellow from turmeric. The main ingredient—mung beans. Annie owns Galloway’s Specialty Foods, purveyors of gourmet, international, and organic foods, including many types of beans that I’ve never heard of before. I admit that I had never cooked with beans, other than canned, but I wanted to learn how. Beans, inexpensive, easy to store, and tasty, are an important dietary item for millions of people around the world, but because of North America’s love of meat, many of us don’t know how, or may have forgotten how, to cook them. I began by buying a kilo of dried whole mung beans (there are also split and hulled mung beans known as Indian dal) and soaking them in water overnight. The next morning I awoke to find beans had taken over the countertop. Lesson No. 1: use a LARGE bowl.

oval, sweet and soft, green, and easily digested. They have also been used in Chinese cuisine (egg rolls and stir-fries) for thousands of years. High in dietary fibre, vitamins C, K and B6, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, manganese, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, folate and protein, mung beans are a superfood—ideal for weight loss and maintaining ultimate health. I haven’t tried it, but I’ve read that a 30-day diet

of split mung beans and rice, along with spices and vegetables, is the ultimate cleanse, at the same time maintaining energy levels and improving digestion. I measured out the spices before I started cooking. I chopped the cilantro, drained and rinsed the mung beans, put the rice on to cook and heated the pan with oil (I use rice bran oil these days, because of its high-heat tolerance and health benefits). I simmered and stirred for 45 minutes, adding water as needed. “Hey mom, these aren’t mung beans, they’re moth (pronounced moat) beans,” my daughter interrupted me. She’s holding the bag of beans. In a large frying pan, add oil and bring to high heat. In a small mixing bowl, mix together mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves, and turmeric. Add to the frying pan and stir until seeds begin to pop; about 1 minute. Add crushed tomatoes, mung beans, garlic, cumin, coriander, cayenne, salt, and water. Bring to a boil, cover, and simmer for about 40-45 minutes. Add cooked rice and mix well. Annie suggests making a salad of red onion, tomatoes, cucumber, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and salt to accompany the mung bean dish.

arts & entertainment Richmond recital marks 50th Canada Music Week The Richmond Branch of the B.C. Registered Music Teachers Association presented a special afternoon concert Sunday commemorating the 50th anniversary of Canada Music

Week. The recital, held at Richmond Presbyterian Church Nov. 14, commenced with all the performers leading the audience in the singing of “O Canada.

Thirty young pianists played varied and imaginative works by Canadian composers, many of whom are still living. Special guest was jazz pianist,

teacher, composer and author Peter Friesen, a member of the Richmond BCRMTA. The audience was treated to eight pianists playing Friesen’s compositions. Canada Music Week has been held Canada-wide in November every year since 1960. It was established by the

Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association to which the Richmond BCRMTA belongs. The aim is to support and promote Canadian composers and performers of Canadian music. Recitals by registered music teachers’ students will be held this month in dozens of Canadian communities.

Richmond hosts B.C.’s biggest dance competition

Around Town Amanda Oye

ancers competed for judges scores and spectators’ hearts last Sunday night as the 17th annual Grand Ball came to a close at the Grand Ballroom.

The three-day competition “is the biggest dance competition ever in B.C., said Andy Wong, owner of the Grand Ballroom and founder of the event. Over 300 dancers, including 42 from Richmond, came from all over the world to compete. Sunday night saw dancers from places such as Latvia, Slovenia,

Italy and the U.S. Around 1,200 spectators came out to watch over the course of the event. The audience did more than just sit and watch though. There were general dance breaks where they could get up and dance on the oor while the competitors got ready to go. They also motivated the dancers by shouting out the number pinned to the backs of their favourite couples as they competed. “It is part of the enthusiasm,â€? said Wong. “It is tradition.â€? Five months of organization is put into holding the Grand Ball. Wong aims to make sure that everyone involved from the dancers to the spectators enjoys the event. “We are selling a good time,â€? he said.

Kassy Davis, Gin Balfour and Jeni MacMillan competed Saturday and returned to watch Sunday.

Amanda Oye covers the social scene for The Richmond Review. Reach her at amanda.oye@ telus.net. Andy Wong started the Grand Ball 17 years Wendy MacInnes and Bob Fisher enjoy ago with his wife, Wendy Wong. coming out to watch the show. Mary Iura, Grace Sioson and Evelyn Oliveros attended the ball for the ďŹ rst time. Sioson and Oliveros recently began taking classes.

fall auto preview BMW X5 functional and fun New 2011 model gets a refresh, making this sport vehicle sparkle inside and out by Neil Moore Contributor

W

hy would a city slicker like me buy an SUV? Considering their higher price point, appetite for fuel, ponderous handling and difficulty to park, I’m scratching my head on this. I do very little offroading, not that many of today’s sport utilities are up to serious bush bashing, and if you really need to haul a bunch of kids and hockey bags, the minivan is more up to the task. So why have I fallen for the 2011 BMW X5? Perhaps because it’s about more than just utility. Many of today’s sport utes are pleasant to ride in, but less fun to drive. BMW’s mid-size SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) is an exception. In designing a vehicle

that is substantially heavier and sits higher than their renowned sedan lineup, the company hasn’t sacrificed driving dynamics. In the X5, they’ve put some fun into functional. For 2011, the X5 gets a mid-cycle refresh, which includes two new engines, an eight-speed automatic transmission, some styling changes to the front fascia and rear apron, and new exterior and interior colour choices. The flagship of the X5 model range is the xDrive50i. It is powered by a new twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 that pumps out a massive 400 hp and 450 lb/ft of torque from 1,750 – 4,500 rpm. But all this brawn comes at a cost, both at the fuel pump (15.3 litres/100km in the city) and at the dealership where you’ll pay a starting MSRP of $74,300 that can climb into six figures by adding a few

The BMW X5 gets a mid-cycle refresh for 2011 with some styling changes to the front fascia and rear apron, and new colour choices. But the big story is in the two new engines, for example the 300 hp turbocharged inline six-cylinder found in this xDrive35i model.

options, freight and taxes. If gas prices are a concern at these lofty levels, the Advanced Diesel X5 xDrive35d, with its 3.0 inline six-cylinder, offers impressive fuel economy, along with 265 horses and a whopping 425 lb/ ft of torque. Still, 10.9 litres/100 km city and 7.6 litres/100 km highway doesn’t come cheap—$62,800 to start. My tester was the slightly less pricey X5 xDrive35i. Starting at $59,990, this model still enjoys a potent powerplant—a new inline-six gas engine that delivers the same 3.0-litre displacement as before, but now features a single twin-scroll turbocharger.

The new eight-speed transmission is so smooth. Adding to the X5’s road-hugging performance is BMW’s Dynamic Stability Control (DSC)—a complex system that helps drivers maintain control on loose or slippery surfaces. If you’re wondering why all the focus thus far has been about performance, not utility, it’s because driving dynamics is where the X5 really shines. Sure, this sport utility (or SAV in BMW-speak) is practical, but in many respects falls in line or behind the competition. Open the split tailgate and you’ll find a usable 620 litres behind the

BMW X5 •Luxury mid-size sport activity vehicle with all-wheel-drive, 3.0-litre inline six with twin-scroll turbocharger (300 hp, 300 lb/ft of torque) •Fuel economy: 12.1/8.0/10.2 litres/100 km (city/ hwy/comb) •Base $59,990; as tested $73,950 second row, which grows to 1,750 litres with the seats folded flat. This falls somewhere close to the Cadillac SRX, is substantially smaller than the Acura MDX and is somewhere between the Audi Q5 and Q7.

The X5 also has a large compartment beneath the cargo floor, which is ideal for securing valuables and those items you don’t want rolling around. Technology is another area where BMW shines, and the X5 is replete with packages and standalone options to enhance the comfort, convenience and safety of the vehicle. My tester had nearly 14-grand worth of options, pushing the price to $73,950. This included the Technology Package ($2,500) that came with a rear view camera with Top View (great for tight parking spaces); navigation system (with 8.8-inch

high-res monitor); voice control (i.e. for adjusting navigation routes while driving); and BMW TeleServices, which connects the dealer with your vehicle for servicing issues. It also included the $5,450 Premium Package that added power tilt/telescopic steering, automatic tailgate, panoramic sunroof, Nevada leather upholstery, park distance control and more. If you have a big budget, enjoy the performance and handling of a sports sedan, but need a little more space, not to mention all-wheel-drive safety and stability, then the X5 is definitely worth a look.

New Challenger big and bold Dodge powers back to muscle car prominence with the 2011 Challenger SRT8 “392” by Jim Robinson Contributor

The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 comes with a 6.4-litre V8 with 470 hp and 470 lb/ft of torque making it the most powerful car currently built by Chrysler.

This bad boy’s off the chain! When the Dodge Challenger decided to jump into the modern muscle car segment in 2008 it did so in a no holds barred way with the SRT8 version complete with a great, thumping 6.1-litre V8 pumping out 425 hp and 420 lb/ft of torque. It was a throwback and breath of fresh air all at the same time. It was also, without doubt, the most powerful car built in Canada at the time. Since then the Mustang and Camaro have arrived and started an undeclared horsepower war. Dodge is now just struggling out of a very bad time

and they’ve come out swinging with no less that eight new Dodge and Chrysler vehicles led by the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. Like the original 2008 Challenger SRT8, the 2011 also has a Hemi, but what a Hemi. Called the “392” because that’s its displacement in cubic inches, it pumps out 470 hp and 470 lb/ft of torque. There are three basic models differentiated primarily by engine. All are front-engine, rear-drive. The Challenger SXT ($26,995) comes with a 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 305 hp and 268 lb/ft of torque with a fivespeed automatic transmission. The SXT Plus starts at $28,995 and adds a number of trim pieces like leather-trimmed seats, Uconnect with Voice Command and a 265-watt Boston Acoustic sound system. See Page B4

fall auto preview

Ford’s smallest car is big on content by Jim Robinson Contributor

F

ord’s smallest car, the 2011 Fiesta, is in many ways its most ambitious.

Not only does Ford claim it gets the best highway mileage in the sub-compact segment (4.9L/100 km) but it offers 15 class-exclusive technologies including the SYNC human machine interface developed in concert with Microsoft. But what really makes it ambitious is its size. Let’s face it. Whatever people want in the United States affects what we get here. Ford has had small cars before that came and went with the price of fuel. Also, the Europeans and Japanese have decades of building tiny cars whereas American buyers historically looked down on them. The price of fuel, not just in North America, but around the world has changed that. In addition, technology has brought space-age driver aids within the financial reach of almost everyone on the planet. Take the Fiesta. Even the base $12,999 sedan comes standard with Ford’s AdvanceTrac that includes electronic stability control, traction control and anti-lock braking. There are

Ford Fiesta •Sub-compact hatchback, front-wheel-drive with 1.6-litre DOHC, inline four-cylinder (120 hp, 112 lb/ft) •Fuel economy: Five-speed manual, 7.1/5.3L/100 km city/ highway; six-speed automatic, 6.9/5.1L/100 km; six-speed PowerShift automatic with SFE Package, 6.8/4.9/100 •$18,999; as tested, $20,879 including $1,350 shipping seven standard airbags including one for the driver’s knees. The Fiesta was born about four years ago when the Mazda Demio was premiered at the Geneva Motor Show as the Mazda2. Back then, Ford and Mazda were very close partners and they shared much including the platform for the Mazda2. But time and the fiscal meltdown of two years ago saw Ford and Mazda start going their own ways. Comparisons between the two are inevitable. The Mazda2 has a 1.5-litre engine producing 100 hp and 98 lb/ ft of torque routing power to the front through a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Starting later with the Fiesta,

Ford was able increase the engine size to 1.6-litres producing 120 hp and 112 lb/ft of torque and, crucially, the same five-speed manual but with a six-speed automatic. The Fiesta SFE (Super Fuel Economy) Package includes underbody shields, lower grille blocker, spare wheel with wheel cap and cruise control along with the automatic trans all designed to lessen drag and improve mileage. While there are only two trim levels for the Mazda2, there are five with the S, SE and SEL sedans and the SE and SES hatchbacks, the SES being tested here. If your life includes an iPhone, Blackberry, you name it; the only Fiesta to consider is the SES. The topline Fiesta SES (as tested) comes with a starting price of $18,899. While it brings you heated seats, premium sound and fancy 16-inch wheels, it also includes Ford’s SYNC, that integrates mobile phones with Microsoft developed onboard voice-activation and entertainment system. It does more than listen to commands; it acts on them. For instance, if you receive a text message, you can ask SYNC to read it to you. You can tell it to call someone on the phone or you can ask the system to play a certain song(s) or “shuffle on” which

With more than 500,00 sold since it was introduced this time last year, the 2011 Ford Fiesta (SES model shown) packs in 15 class-exclusive technologies and up to 4.9L/100 km highway fuel economy.

mixes music in certain genres or al fresco. In addition, information is always displayed on the four-inch LCD monitor in the upper centre of the dash. On top of that, the system will make an emergency 911 call through a cellphone if an airbag(s) goes off. Oh, and the sound quality of the six-speaker premium audio system probably sets the bar for a car priced under 20 grand. The engine of the Fiesta is will-

ing and revs freely while benefitting from the latest technology like variable valve timing that not only provides good fuel economy buts makes cold weather starting a whole lot easier. Ford is on a roll with vehicles like the Edge and Mustang selling as fast as they can be built. With five different ways to order a Fiesta, not to mention the bevy of standard features and options, Ford’s littlest car is in many ways one of its best.

fall auto preview Honda Accord sedan earns top safety rating The 2011 Honda Accord Sedan has earned the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s bestpossible overall vehicle score of five stars. Helping the Accord achieve the top score were five-star ratings for overall frontal crash safety, overall side crash safety and rollover resistance. The Accord is one of only six vehicles to achieve a five-star overall vehicle score to date, and is the first to achieve five stars in each of the three ratings categories: five-star frontal crash rating, five-star side crash rating (combined results of side barrier and

side pole) and five-star rollover rating. As a convenience to new car shoppers, the overall vehicle score represents the combined results of the overall ratings from the frontal crash tests; the side crash tests and the rollover-resistance into a single, summary score between one and five stars. Revised for 2011, the frontal crash safety test incorporates a crash dummy representative of a small-size female in the front passenger’s seat and, as before, an averagesize male crash dummy in the driver’s seat. The side-crash safety evaluations continue to include

the side-barrier test used previously where a moving barrier strikes a stationary vehicle at an angle. However,

a new side-pole test has been added where a moving vehicle strikes a stationary pole barrier.

FOR

The 6.4-litre Hemi V8 really fills the engine bay and produces 90 more horsepower than the standard 5.7-litre Hemi.

Challenger offers one of the best bangs for buck From Page B1

The Challenger R/T ($36,395) is equipped with the ubiquitous 5.7-litre Hemi V8 now producing 379 hp and 410 lb/ft of torque through a standard five-speed Auto Stick automatic or an optional six-Speed Tremec TR6060 manual transmission. The Challenger R/T Classic ($38,390) adds standard features like HID headlights and 20inch wheels. Like the R/T 2011, Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 is available with either the standard five-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick or an available Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission. The 392 comes with an improved heavy-duty clutch that provides easier shift engagement. Also, the force needed to work the clutch pedal doesn’t require legs of steel to make it work. Now it may sound odd to talk about “green” and a 6.4-litre V8 at the same time, but Chrysler’s Fuel Saver technology is included in automatic transmission equipped V8 models. It allows the engine to operate economically on four cylinders or use all eight cylinders when needed. There are two versions of the “392” starting with the SRT8 392 at $47,995 and the fancier 392 Inaugural Edition at $49,995. The chief difference with the Inaugural is that it is offered in two colours: Deep Water Blue with standard Stone White stripes or

Dodge Challenger •High performance coupe with rearwheel-drive, 6.4-litre, OHV V8 (470 hp, 470 lb/ft) •Fuel economy: (Est.) 30 mpg highway •Price: $47,995; 392 Inaugural Edition, $49,990. Bright White Clear Coat with standard Viper Blue stripes. For the first time, the front grille features a body-colour grille surround. Unique “392 HEMI” badges flank both fenders touting the historically significant V8 engine that remains true to its high-performance roots and powers the highest rated Challenger in terms of horsepower and torque ratings. Open the door and you don’t so much as get in as step down into the cockpit like a WWII fighter. The high doorsills and instrument panel let you know this is not your average family grocery-getter. I expected a thunderous explosion of gasoline against piston at startup, but it was all pretty tame. There was the fruity burble from the exhaust tips that one expects from a big bore V8 but no drama. That was, until I moved off from rest from the Infineon Raceway parking lot in Sonoma, Calif., and the tone went up a full octave to a bass rumble. The 2011 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 is one of the best bangs for the buck on the market.

yundai has literally stepped up to the big time with the 2011 Equus luxury sedan. At 5.1 metres long, the Equus was designed and built to take on Audi A8, Lexus LS 460 and Mercedes-Benz S550. Boasting available rear seats with massage function and a centre console that features a beverage cooler, the Equus also comes with just about every driver aid and creature comfort feature you can name. More importantly, it marks a big step up into new territory for the Korean carmaker. Only 27 dealers across the country—including OpenRoad Hyundai in Richmond—will be getting the car. The Equus will be sold in Canada in two distinct trim models differing primarily in the back

support and shiatsu massage function. Equus, along with the Genesis Sedan and Coupe, is the third Hyundai with rear-wheeldrive. It is longer than Genesis (5,158 mm vs. 4,975 mm) most of that being in the back seat area. The chassis has 52/48 front-to-rear weight distribution with liberal use of high-tensile steel in critical areas for the kind of stiffness a big car like this needs. Power is provided by

Hyundai’s Tau 4.6-litre DOHC V8 engine that can run on premium or regular fuel. On recommended premium it produces 385 hp and 333 lb/ft of torque. On regular there is 378 hp and 324 lb/ft of torque. Standard features, and there are too many to list here, include Electronic Stability Control (ESC), electronic active head restraints and a lane departure warning system. When Katya’s alcoholic mother finds herself in debt, Katya, always the pleaser, helps her out by asking Mr. Kidder for a loan, which he is only too happy to supply. Think indebtedness, control and submissiveness. Mr. Kidder’s intensions, as you might guess, are less than noble, but he acts slowly, hoping to get Katya to trust him. He entices her with gifts of cash in return for her posing for his portraits. And each week, the amount increases in direct proportion to what he asks of her, giving Katya good reason to keep coming back

to his mansion. The day comes, of course, when he asks her to pose semi-clothed, and something untoward happens. Oates deftly handles this with suggestion only, but there’s no doubt in the reader’s mind what has transpired. Throughout the novel, we learn more about Katya and her unfortunate background, which of course explains a lot about why she’s willing to do what she’s doing. She’s torn between wanting to please Mr. Kidder and knowing deep inside that what she’s doing is wrong. When her cousin Roy, comes to town, things turn sour

and the mystery that lives just below the plotline escalates. With all its darkness and barely contained sexuality, A Fair Maiden is an interesting read, exploring the concepts of psychological control, sexuality, desperation and human choice. I don’t think I’m going to run out and read another Joyce Carol Oates novel anytime soon, but I’m glad I read this one. Shelley Civkin is communications officer with Richmond Public Library. Duck hunter rescued A man in his 70s was rescued from the frigid waters off Garry Point early Sunday night after his homemade kayak overturned while he was duck hunting. Canadian Coast Guard spokesperson Dan Bate said people in the area heard the man's calls for help around 6:30 p.m. The Coast Guard hovercraft Penac was dispatched to the scene and arrived shortly thereafter, and a diver was able to go into swimming mode and pull the man from the water. He was taken by the B.C. Ambulance Service to the hospital. Bate said the man was "severely hypothermic" and was unable to use his arms or legs. He was not wearing a life vest, Bate said.

This is one disturbing little novel about the unseemly relationship between 16-year old Katya Spivak who’s a nanny for the Engelhardts, and 68-year old Marcus Kidder, wealthy benefactor, children’s book author and painter. It starts off innocently enough—Katya meets Mr. Kidder at the park one day while she’s out with the kids and is impressed with his smooth charm and generous offer to come and have tea some day. That day comes soon enough, and with it, a whole slew of icky and ew-filled creepiness. The whole older man/ young girl scenario is redolent of Lolita, and lends that same aura to this novel, but in this case with barelybelow-the-surface sexual tension and electricity. Mr. Kidder suggests that he has a mission in mind for

RAG preps for new show Richmond Art Gallery presents a new exhibition opening Thursday, Nov. 25. More Often Than Always/Less Often Than Never features artists from around the world proposing imaginary solutions to real questions, according to their own notions of imagination and reality. The project started from Alfred Jarry's invention of "pataphysics"—the science of imaginary solutions. Victoria-based curators Doug Jarvis and Ted Hiebert, of Noxious Sector, will hold a series of séances to make the final selection of projects. The exhibit runs until Jan. 23, 2011.

Two travellers with expensive taste when it comes to wrist watches have been fined in Richmond provincial court. One of them had a $126,000 piece of jewelry on his wrist, something that obviously caught some unwanted attention from Canada Border Services agents. Zhao Rong Mai pled guilty on Oct. 21 to unlawfully making false or deceptive statements after landing at Vancouver International Airport. He failed to declare the wrist watch and Richmond provincial court Judge Ron Fratkin fined him $12,920, the amount of duties he evaded. What's more, Mai may also have to pay Canada Border Services between 25 and 80 per cent of the

value of his watch in order to get it back, which could amount to an additional $31,500 to $100,000. Another man brandishing a Rolex watch learned a similar lesson. Seok Bae Min pled guilty in Richmond provincial court to one count of making a false or deceptive statement. He failed to declare a Rolex watch valued at $18,000 following his return to Canada via Vancouver International Airport. Richmond provincial court Judge Jane McKinnon fined Min $2,194, the amount of duties and taxes he evaded. He'll also have to pay an additional sum to Canada Border Services for the return of his watch. —Martin van den Hemel
