Meteorologists are predicting a cold—and potentially snowy—winter, and preparations at the city are “well underway,” according to Ben Dias, manager of roads and construction services.

“The city has made considerable strides in improving not only the equipment and resources available to respond to snow and ice events, but also in improving communications and community involvement,” he said in a report presented Wednesday to a city council committee.

According to U.S. forecaster AccuWeather, this winter could be one of the top three coldest winters to hit the West Coast in the past 20 years.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean lots of snow, as cold air doesn’t hold moisture well, noted AccuWeather meteorologist Brett Anderson.

Environment Canada meteorologist David Jones isn’t going that far with his forecast, but did say this winter’s moderate La Nina weather pattern could translate into more snow in the Lower Mainland.

“I’d say it’s a good year to get snow tires,” Jones said.

“But remember other outcomes are possible.”

School adds splash of colour 1,400-piece art project unites students, artist, staff, parents

by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter Ado Iacuzzo hasn’t yet seen the fruits of his many months of labour, but the 85-year-old Port Alberni man is looking forward to his next visit to a Richmond elementary school, which has added a welcome splash of colour to the gloomy, grey days of autumn.

Armed with a band saw and a belt sander, Iacuzzo cut out and sanded 1,400 pieces of plywood at his neighbourhood Sunshine Club’s wood-working club into the shared shapes of flower petals and

eye-catching lady bugs and bees.

“Sean gives me a lot of projects,” Iacuzzo said with a chuckle of his son-in-law Sean Harrington, principal at Garden City Elementary School.

“It took a little bit of time,” he said, adding that he was glad to be a part of it.

In fact, it took months for Iacuzzo to cut out the shapes, which were designed and painted by the school’s students under the guidance of Vancouver artist Sofia Silva-McGowan, who donated her expertise in coordinating the school-wide project, and ICI Paints which furnished the outdoor paint.

“It was truly a community project and it was such a priviledge working with all of them,” Silva-McGowan said Thursday.

Silva-McGowan was enlisted by her friend, a teacher at Garden City, and the project launched in March.

Using just three shapes—a large petal, a small petal, and a circle—life was brought to the wood and the fence through the imagination of children and their colour co-ordinated painting skills.

She was complimentary of the buy-in from students and teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 7, and parents, many of whom helped hang the pieces on the school’s streetside chain-link fence earlier this month, despite the fact their children had already graduated from the school.

Many people devoted their Saturdays to the project, which now serves to dress up the otherwise drab front of the school, but has added an unanticipated safety element as cars passing by are now slowing down to admire the artwork.

“The idea was to bring some garden back to Garden City,” said vice principal Wayne McDermott.

Vote shows polarized politics Councillorelect Chak Au wins in City Centre, loses in Steveston

of the pack at many of Richmond’s 32 polls.

But some councillors-elect, like Chak Au and Harold Steves, had significant fluctuations of support throughout the city.

In Steveston—named after Steves’ ancestors—the 41-year councillor was the most popular, while Au was the least. Steves earned 2,655 votes in the area to Au’s 1,022 votes.

But in City Centre, the most populated area of the city, Au finished with the most votes—4,190—nearly doubling Steves’ total of 2,195.

Au said his finish in Steveston didn’t come as a surprise, as it hasn’t been his area of activity. Au, who lives and works in City Centre, said the polls suggest he “should work more with the residents in the Steveston area.”

“I think that’s one area I should focus on, try to listen to them and attend to their issues if I want to represent them.”

Linda Barnes and Ken Johnston also finished with lower totals in the heart of the city, while some candidates who narrowly missed a council seat—Cynthia Chen and Alexa Loo— enjoyed higher support there.

Mayor Malcolm Brodie’s only opponent, Richard Lee, finished with more votes in City Centre than other areas, but couldn’t best Brodie at a single poll.

In Seafair and Blundell, Linda McPhail topped the polls, and in Broadmoor and Shellmont it was Bill McNulty who finished with the most votes.

In East Richmond, where homes border Richmond’s largest swath of farmland, McNulty also finished first, while Steves, a champion of

preserving agricultural land, finished with the least votes among elected councillors.

In Shellmont and at Watermania, area resident Carol Day, who missed a council seat by 302 votes, finished strong—98 votes less than the area’s leader.

Not all ballots were necessarily cast by residents in the area where they live. The 2011 election was the first

time voters could cast ballots at any voting place, which included malls, Watermania and Richmond Cultural Centre.

Overall, McNulty finished first in the polls, collecting a steady number of votes across the city.

“I’m very humbled by the support that I got, because you don’t go out there to work if you wish to get elected. You go out there to make a

better place and a better community for everybody,” he said.

“I guess my hard work, and working with all communities, has paid off—and they rewarded me with a vote.”

Second in the total vote for city council was Linda McPhail, followed

by Derek Dang, Evelina HalseyBrandt, Linda Barnes, Harold Steves, Chak Au and Ken Johnston.

Plane crash survivor is on the road to recovery

by Bhreandáin Clugston Editor Recovering plane crash survivor Kelly Jablonski has his good days and bad days, but Wednesday night was certainly one of his better ones.

Jablonski was among seven passengers who survived the crash Beachcraft King aircraft on Sea Island on Oct. 27. Pilot Luc Fortin and co-pilot Matt Robic later died in hospital.

On Wednesday night, the CEO of Richmond-based Ultimate Skateboard Distribution was up and about at the Business Excellence Awards hosted by the Richmond Chamber of Commerce at River Rock. His day got even better when his company won an award.

Jablonski sat down with the press just before the awards. He recalls being told by the pilot about 15 minutes in that there was a small oil leak and the plane was turning back to YVR. “Suddenly, about a couple of hundred feet above the ground the plane veered to the left... It was just like a roller-coaster ride—it was instantaneous—and I saw that ground coming

at us. It was only two or three seconds but it was definitely long enough to know what was going on and it was bad news.”

While many passengers were immediately rescued, Jablonski had to stay in the plane. He broke 10 ribs, shattered his sternum and received burns to his legs. Fortunately, another passenger unbuckled Jablonski’s seatbelt and he was able to stay low, where more oxygen was, until firefighters quickly arrived to rescue him.

Recovery has been slow, but steady.

“Life is very different right now.

Basically it entails trying to sleep at night for seven to eight hours.”

Once his torso heals, he’ll go into more rehab, but for now, it’s light exercise.

Jablonski stays in the loop at Ultimate Skateboard Distribution, but isn’t worried one bit about things sliding back at the office.

“The crew at work is so strong,” he says. “Some people have stepped up and taken on some of the day-to-day roles that I did have.”

Wednesday’s award underlined that faith.

B.C. wants teens signed up to vote With participation in elections declining at every level, B.C.’s new chief electoral officer wants to extend voter registration to 16-year-olds while they are in high school.

Keith Archer released a report Monday suggesting the government con-

sider that move, to get more young people registered and ready to vote when they turn 18.

Currently the lowest level of participation is in the 18-to-25 age group, as well as the lowest number of registered voters.

While Coun. Bill McNulty has no problem with an external auditor combing through the City of Richmond’s financial ledgers, he’s troubled that the province is doing so when it can’t even balance its own books.

“We have always been, and I have always been, transparent. (But) I have a concern with the provincial government coming in with an auditor when they can’t even look after their own books.

Give me a break,” said McNulty, who was the top vote-getter among councillors last Saturday. “It’s great to ask the municipalities to be accountable, but clean up your own backyard first.”

The provincial government introduced legislation this week to establish the promised auditor of municipal spending but debate and passage will be delayed until a spring session of the Legislature.

Premier Christy Clark said the new auditor’s main role will be to help cities find efficiencies in spending and improve program effectiveness by providing neutral, non-binding advice—not by imposing solutions.

Clark said the office will strengthen local government accountability and ensure the best possible return on investment for taxpayer dollars.

The Office of the Auditor General for Local Government, to be based in Surrey, will conduct performance audits assessing how effective city operations are in providing value for money, and these will be made public.

“The same reports would give local governments important information about how to streamline processes and identify the most efficient use of public funds, maximizing the use of taxpayer dollars,” said Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Ida Chong.

Audits will target specific services, not a city’s entire operations.

Also covered are regional districts, including Metro Vancouver’s utility arms, and any corporations or other entities controlled by cities or regional districts.

Delegates at September’s Union of B.C. Municipalities convention strongly criticized the planned municipal auditor, suspecting its aim is to pressure elected councils to change their policies and priorities. Some predicted the office itself will be a waste of money.

Metro Vancouver mayors urged the province in October to put TransLink under the scrutiny of the new auditor.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business applauded the announcement.

“We believe having an independent, unbiased body to scrutinize municipal spending and conduct performance audits will be an extremely effective step in curbing municipal overspending,” said CFIB spokeswoman Shachi Kurl.

Plenty of ways to support the Richmond Christmas Fund The Best A’s Come

Food for Thought Arlene Kroeker The weeks before Christmas are an intense time of year for everyone involved in the Richmond Christmas Fund.

Under the umbrella of Volunteer Richmond, the Richmond Christmas Fund provides low income Richmond residents with grocery vouchers for Christmas dinner, and new toys, books, stuffed animals, stocking stuffers, or gift cards for their children aged 15 and under. The fund also sponsors a hamper program, pairing private and corporate donors with low income families.

It all started in 1932 when Ethel Tibbits, the editor of The Richmond Review, provided hampers for needy families in Richmond. Over the years the name changed

a few times and the program evolved to what it is today—part of a non-profit agency with various sources of funding. As can be expected, the funding comes and goes over the years as well. Thank goodness for community support.

As you can appreciate, it takes significant financial resources and the work of many volunteers to support these families and provide toys and gifts for the many children.

Last year a total of 2,266 individuals registered with the program.

Of this number, 723 children aged 12 and under received gifts from the McDonald’s Toy Room or through direct family sponsorship and 256 teens received gift cards. This year, they expect 2,500 registrants (family registration begins November 28).

by Matthew Hoekstra Staff Reporter A system designed to keep saltwater away from crops is working—but salinity levels in the Fraser River remain a concern.

Farmers who use river water to irrigate or harvest crops are watching salt levels rise, particularly in the South Arm around the No. 6 Road pump station.

The station is equipped with a sensor valve that closes when high salinity water is detected—effectively keeping the damaging potential of salt away from crops.

Staff and farmers use handheld salinity meters to spot check water to ensure the valve is working. And so far, it is, according to a staff report presented to a city council committee

“The city is generally meeting the irrigation needs of the farmers served by the (pump station). However, irrigation water quantity could be limited during Fraser River low flow years or during the fall months,” said Bie in his report.

Salinity levels were safe for crops 70 per cent of the time in August, but just 25 per cent of the time in September—when salinity levels were up to 10 times higher.

Staff conclude lower river flows are likely responsible for the higher peak of salinity levels and reduced irrigation water availability in September.

Rising sea levels could make the situation worse, Bie warned in a report to council last year, which noted a predicted rise of 0.35 to 1.2 metres “will have significant impacts” on the lower Fraser’s salt content.

Farmers use river water to irrigate crops and, in the case of cranberry farmers, flood their fields for harvest.

Farmers can irrigate fields with drinking water, but they aren’t offered a discount on water, making it an expensive alternative.

City gears up for snow From Page 1 The projection is for the 90-day temperature average over the winter to run one to two degrees colder than normal here. That would increase the odds of big dumps of snow in Metro Vancouver, said Jones, who also noted last winter was a strong La Nina yet resulted in less snow than expected.

Nonetheless, Richmond is preparing for whatever Mother Nature brings.

The city has 960 metric tonnes of salt secured—with another 500 tonnes in reserve—and a sanding, salting and snow removal budget of $550,000.

Ten dump trucks with plough attachments and various other equipment is available to city workers to clear roads, parking lots, sidewalks and catch basins.

Realtime information on road conditions is now relayed to city staff via ďŹ ve road temperature sensors throughout the city, and more snow-removal equipment has been added to the works yard arsenal, according to Dias’s report.

A sidewalk clearing machine is ready to clear snow around Canada Line pedestrian areas, and a new excavator is available to clear catch basins to reduce potential for ooding during snow melt.

More online information about road conditions is also being promised this year, supplementing an online list of private snow removal contractors for hire and information on the Snow Angels program. Snow Angels is a registry of local volunteer organizations willing to help people in need during major winter storms.

he federal Liberals have come up with a much better way to deal with the inequality of various regions of Canada in the House of Commons.

Rather than expand the Commons by 30 seats, the Liberals suggest continuing with the current 308 seats, but taking seats away from Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

Nine seats would then go to the three fast-growing provinces of Ontario, B.C. and Alberta, and the overall representation from most provinces would be closer to true representation by population.

The Conservative government wants to add 30 Commons seats, stating that past court rulings and other constitutional requirements prevent anything but an expansion of the House of Commons.

But how many MPs do we need in Canada? The current number of 308 is more than adequate.

The only issue that needs resolving is ensuring that voters in some provinces are more fairly represented than they are now.

At a time of economic challenges, it seems the height of folly to add another 30 MPs to the House of Commons. There is simply no need for them. In

addition to the annual cost of as much as $18 million, taxpayers would also be on the hook for their benefits, including a lucrative pension scheme.

The Liberals deserve credit for the bravery of stating that Quebec can lose seats. Considering that the two MPs to speak about this issue for the Liberals, Marc Garneau and Stephane Dion, are

both Quebec MPs, this is quite remarkable.

This seat redistribution plan has been in the works for years, and the Conservatives have come up with a variety of schemes. The latest calls for 15 more seats in Ontario, six each in Alberta and B.C. and three more in Quebec.

The NDP, meanwhile, want Quebec to be guaranteed a fixed

percentage of Commons seats, even if its population goes down proportionally.

The Liberals have come up with something infinitely better.

It places more MPs in growing regions, and ensures voters are more fairly represented.

It is worth examining in more detail.

ike many of you, I’m enjoying watching clips of my hometown on prime time TV. I tune into ABC’s Once Upon a Time just to see if I can catch glimpses of Steveston. In the spirit of fairy tales, I thought I’d try my hand at crafting a story.

Once upon a time, there was once a magical land, created by a mighty river.

The river brought nutrients, from high in the mountains, and dropped

them around the land.

All kinds of plants, birds and fish were drawn to the land, which provided them with plentiful food.

From time to time, the river would flood.

Although many of these creatures perished, as the waters receded, life would renew. And then the people came.

At first, they understood the magic of this special place and lived in harmony with the land. They built their small houses on stilts, with their kitchens and bedrooms upstairs, in case the waters returned.

Many lived off the fruit and fish that the land provided. They dried and stored the food during the plentiful season to keep for when times were lean.

As more and more people arrived, they began to change the land. The canals and sloughs that once helped to drain the land were filled in. They were too annoying to the newcomers who didn’t

like all the mud and dirt associated with the ebb and flow of the river.

Dykes were built around the land keep it dry. The river was no longer seen as the giver of life, but rather as an annoyance.

The people wanted to be the ones in control.

Soon, they began to forget that they lived on an island, below the level of the water. They no longer built small houses but instead grew them taller and taller and wider and wider. The fish began to disappear but that was no longer of much consequence since the people began bringing their food in from elsewhere.

The people wanted to show how clever they were and built structures that their ancestors would never have thought to build in a land that flooded: condominiums, apartment blocks, even an airport! With every structure, more of the land, that would have absorbed the moisture in times of floods, disap-

peared.

And then, the unexpected happened. A flood, like one that had never been seen before in living memory, breached the dykes and brought great misery to the people. The fancy houses and buildings were all ruined. Food could not be brought in and none had been stored for no one knew how to do that anymore. Everyone pointed their fingers to water and blamed it for their suffering. Until the people learned to point their fingers towards themselves and correct their wrongs, they were doomed to relive the tale over and over.

Apart from the sad ending to this story, the most unfortunate thing about it is that it’s not fiction. I based it on what is currently happening in my former home in Thailand.

The facts disagree with Evelina Halsey-Brandt Editor: Evelina Halsey-Brandt denied the truth, so the truth must be told again.

First, let’s travel back in time to March 2010, soon after Richmond council voted to fund the purchase of the Garden City Lands. The Halsey-Brandt couple on council criticized the price.

In a letter in The Review, I referred to a December 2008 council meeting where “Coun. Greg HalseyBrandt said a Richmond offer to buy the Garden City Lands should be based on the value of the Walmart property across Alderbridge Road.�

Thanks to the city clerk’s mp3 audio ďŹ le, we can listen to that 2008 meeting in progress. The voice is Harold Steves’: “We have already heard the Halsey-Brandt team suggesting that we pay the highest market value for the property based on what Walmart is paying next door.â€? He goes on to talk about the Halsey-Brandt team suggesting “millions of dollars an acre,â€? and Evelina interrupts with “We’re not the Halsey-Brandt team!â€?

The same recording gives us Greg Halsey-Brandt: “As I understand it, there is or was an application

by Walmart, right beside it, just north across the street, so in terms of evaluating the land values, I think sort of the standard is set in the community of what any negotiator would tell you what property values are worth.� (That street is Alderbridge.)

We also hear Evelina on what it would cost to acquire the lands: “It’s going to be based on how the land is properly assessed by the assessment authority, and which is with what would be adjacent uses, which is your Cambie area.� (The Walmart property is there.)

Travelling forward to March 2010 again, we read this in a letter from Evelina to The Richmond Review: “I was shocked by the false and misleading statements Jim Wright made. Wright and everyone who follows council meetings knows that at no time did I nor Coun. Greg Halsey-Brandt say that Richmond’s offer to buy the Garden City lands should be based on the value of the Walmart property across Alderbridge Road.�

In the words of The Review’s acting editor at the time, Evelina “pulled the audio tapes from that meeting to conďŹ rm her own account. She was quite clear on this.â€?

Ironically, the Evelina letter called me defamatory, malicious and libelous.

The letter was harmful to the community. As unpaid community service, I’ve spent four years helping the people of Richmond to understand a complex issue, and my credibility that was trashed is needed for that.

The damage would also affect the Garden City Lands Coalition, the citizens who stopped what Evelina advocated—dense development on a large green area in the city centre. We need our credibility for the next stage, ensuring that the park there will meet local needs in a fitting way and inspire the world.

“Is she just a complete liar then?” That’s a citizen’s comment on a recent blog story about Coun. Evelina Halsey-Brandt.

Man shot in the face A Surrey man was shot in the face early Sunday morning outside the Holiday Inn at Cambie and Shell roads.

Richmond Mounties responded about 1 a.m. to a report of a shooting.

Richmond RCMP Cpl. Sherrdean Turley said preliminary information suggests that two groups of males became engaged in a conversation in a parking lot near the hotel. â&#x20AC;&#x153;As the conversation concluded, and one of the two groups was departing, a gun was produced and at least one shot was ďŹ red resulting in a 23-year-old Indo-Canadian male suffering a shot to the face,â&#x20AC;? Turley said.

The victim was taken to hospital and was listed in stable condition.

Cities question package recycling plan Jeff Nagel Black Press New concerns are being raised that the planned handover of the existing blue box collection system to private industry may undermine recycling in Metro Vancouver.

The provincial government earlier this year ordered industry stewards to start collecting all packaging materials by 2014—a move expected to supplant existing blue box pickup and expand the materials collected.

It’s the latest in a series of extended producer responsibility (EPR) initiatives in B.C. that already cover everything from beverage containers to electronics.

And while industry stewards would have to collect the paper, cardboard and plastic packaging

under the new program, critics warn there’s no guarantee they will actually recycle it.

Metro Vancouver deputy solid waste manager Dennis Ranahan said the packaging collected could, in theory, be shipped outside the region to be dumped, incinerated or exported overseas.

“We want to ensure the highest and best use,” he said. “That isn’t reflected by any firm targets in the regulation.”

Rather than separate and sell low-value plastic at break-even or a loss—which some city-run recycling programs do—the industry stewards may decide it’s more profitable to sell it as fuel to be burned in incinerators or in industrial plants.

“We do not want to see low-grade plastics that are now source-separated just go to a refuse-derived fuel

(RDF) application when we could be promoting recycling,” Ranahan said.

Metro’s solid waste plan allows incineration of waste as an energy recovery option preferred over landfilling, but only for garbage that can’t be recycled.

“If you hand that over to the private sector, do they have the same motivations?” Ranahan asked.

He noted it sometimes takes time for markets and technologies to develop to make use of lower-margin recyclables, an incubation process that may be thwarted by a move to simply sell the material as fuel.

While Metro has its own wasteto-energy plant and plans to build more, there’s also plenty of demand for RDF in B.C. from cement kilns, pulp mills or else industries across the border in the U.S.

Richmond gymnast is hoping to contend for a spot on Olympic team

by Don Fennell Sports Editor Richmond’s Jason Scott is hoping a strong showing at the recent Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico last month will help vault him even higher—specifically into contention for a spot on Canada’s gymnastics team that will compete next summer at the 2012 Olympics in London, England.

“The Elite Canada meet in January, and then the Canadian championships, will determine who will be on the team, and I’ll have to be top five at both if I want a shot at going,” he said.

Scott, 19, not only helped Canada finish fifth overall (two spots higher than in 2007) but also placed fourth in the individual final on the pommel horse, outscoring opponents from Puerto Rico, Brazil and Mexico.

“That was one of the best routines I have seen Jason do under pressure,”

said Ferenc Szabo Jr., who coached the Canadian team and is also the competitive men’s head coach at the Richmond Gymnastics Association.

Scott said he will be training diligently.

Ye earns national standard in breaststroke It was a tough weekend of racing in Langley for Richmond Rapids swimmers, but also a great learning experience.

For the veterans it was a chance to train through a meet, endure some fatigue and gauge where they were in training. And for head coach Robert Pettifer, an opportunity to see just how tough his athletes are.

“It’s not easy arriving at the pool at seven in the morning, swimming four events, and then 8 hours later repeating them all over again.

It takes mental discipline and a little bit of guts,” said Pettifer. “Finals is only about two hours long, and for them to re-swim four events in that time period is very gruelling.”

For the novice swimmers, it was a chance to experience a heats-andfinals meet and learning to deal with the multiple events. Kevin Ye proved to be tough as nails, earning a national age group time in the 200-metre breaststroke.

This standard allows him to compete at the Canadian championships in Calgary next July. Ye also had personal bests in all his events and collected gold medals in four events: 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley, and 100 breaststroke, silver in the 200 butterfly, fourth in the 400 freestyle, and fifth in the 200 backstroke.

“We’re a pretty aggressive team, so we like to have some rocks in play,” said Bibby. “We have more fun playing this way and it’s more entertaining for the fans. And we’ve got some (additional) strength with Steve at third. If we get in a bit of trouble it’s not unusual for him to move three, four or five rocks around and change the end.”

While Bibby, Schmirler and Schindler have curled together for a couple of years now, Thevenot only joined the team a year ago. or the 10th anniversary of Vancouver Fashion Week, the designers showcased their work at the spacious art studio of Masik Studio. Once again the TRUE’S Fashion Couture retailer showcased their spring looks down the VFW runway and I was surprised to see that Joseph Ribkoff was part of the lineup I had first come across the internationally established brand, Joseph Ribkoff, when I randomly found some amazing vintage pieces with great details and colour so when I saw that Ribkoff would be a part of VFW schedule, this was an event not to be missed. The show opened with Ribkoff’s spokeswoman, Miss America 2011 Teresa Scanlan in a colourful floral asymetric top and crisp white pants. The dresses that followed were in bright coral reds and black and white stripes. After a few more subdued, but detailed evening appropriate outfits with double collars, pleating, or chunky gold zippers, there were numerous colourful and patterned semi-dressy blouses and dresses. The silhouettes themselves were of simpler shapes with modest boatnecks or pencil skirt hems, but the colours were bright and bold and the patterns were wild, abstract blends of leopard, zebra, feathers and watercolour paintings. To finish the show, Miss America returned in a classic wrap dress in a watercolour print mixing shades of blue, black and white.

The TRUE’S Fashion, located in Richmond’s Aberdeen Centre, always features youthful and fun, but luxurious ensembles. This season was no different as many looks included feminine dresses and “ladies luncheon” style suits finished with furs in all shapes, from tight neckwarmers to collars to vests. The feminine dresses had soft delicate fabrics of chiffon and silk with sparkly beading. In previous years, we had seen pattern after pattern paired together, but this season, the focus was on texture ranging from beading, thick woven wool, pleating, sheer, fur, lace, and 3D flowers.

There was a loud gasp from the crowd when the breathtaking white shorts suit and soft pink blouse came down the runway. The jacket neckline featured elaborate beadwork and the shorts had elegantly draped pockets. Quite a few looks also had a classic Chanel feel in black and white and knit jackets that were very reminiscent of the signature Chanel woven suit jackets. My personal favourite look was the long, loose white with tiny black check patterned jacket and two-tone metallic pleather pants in gold and camel. The pants made it a little more masculine and edgy in contrast to the chic light jacket.

Technology allows you to see a full-scale image of your chosen floorplan

In-Real-Theatre a new way to buy a home Buying a new home before construction is complete can be stressful, since it can be hard to picture the finished floorplan. You’ll never need to worry about that at The 258, a new high-rise development in New Westminster.

With the help of Pilothouse Marketing, The 258 is using In-Real-Theatre technology to allow purchasers to walk around a full-scale virtual floorplan of their new home.

“We’ve actually had people sitting in the ‘bathtub,’” laughs Bill Morrison, president of Pilothouse Marketing.

In-Real-Theatre is controlled by computers, a server and 16 projectors that combine to project a full-size floorplan onto the floor.

Potential buyers choose the floorplan they’d like to see on a touch screen. The projectors then beam the images onto the floor, while

large screens around the room show you the view that you’ll get from every angle.

“This is a pretty phenomenal way to do things,” Morrison says. “This could revolutionize how people buy a home.”

Seeing your home isn’t all you can do in the theatre however. You can also experience the sounds and smells of the neighbourhood, with the help of fragrance atomizers in the room.

“We knew we had to come up with something strong,” Morrison says. “We have to put people in the brochure instead of handing them the brochure.”

The 258 will be opening for sale on Nov. 26 by appointment only, and Morrison says the response so far has been tremendous. “I am very confident it will sell out,” he says. “There is a lot of built-up anticipation.”

OBITUARIES

Born 1930 in Birmingham, England and after a brave battle with illness, Brenda passed away peacefully on November 18, 2011. She is predeceased by parents, Elsie and Cyril Walkey and husband, Charles “Ken” Andrews.

Brenda will always be remembered by; daughters, Jacqueline Teresa and Andrea Kara; grandchildren, Ross (Donna), James, Kiera and Mercedes; cousins, Bill Walkey, Joy Walkey, Eileen, Bruce and Stuart Russell and Connie Longhurst. She will also be remembered by Ian Flint and many other relatives in England, Wales and Australia.

Brenda immigrated to Canada in May of 1958 from England and settled in the English Bay area of Vancouver. She began her career in Canada as an accountant for CP Air. Her greatest passion was the time and the love that she gave to her grandchildren.

She also enjoyed music, travelling and White Spot.

She dedicated much of her time to volunteering in the community, especially at Senior’s Centres doing music therapy, as well as participating in numerous choirs and performing solos for weddings and funerals. A Celebration of Brenda’s life will be held at the Gardens of Gethsemani Chapel, 15800 32nd Avenue, Surrey, BC, on Monday November 28, 2011 at 1:00 pm followed by interment.

Brenda’s family invites you to join them for a reception directly after the burial at the Richmond Funeral Home Lounge, 8420 Cambie Rd., Richmond, B.C. A special thank you to the staff of the Richmond Hospital and Minoru Residence and to Ross and Donna.

FRASER, Joan Olive February 20, 1925 to November 18, 2011. Born in Poole, England, Joan immigrated to Canada as a war bride in 1945 where she and Bruce settled in Salmon Arm. Joan and Bruce relocated to Vancouver in 1947 and in 1957 they moved to Broadmoor subdivision in Richmond, where they lived for 48 years and raised four sons. Joan worked at the Information Desk at Vancouver General Hospital and later with her husband’s business, Milne & Middleton.

Predeceased by her husband, Bruce Fraser in 2004, survived by her four boys and their spouses, Robert (Margaret), Barrie (Janet), Colin (Sharon) and David (Lyndell); 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

We will all deeply miss your beaming smile, the constant giggles and wonderful sense of humour.

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada 175 Bloor Street East, Suite 700, North Tower, Toronto, ON M4W 3R8.

He is fondly remembered and sadly missed by his family, son, Chris “Hammer” (Julie), daughter, Lesley (Jim) Harley, and grandchildren, Krista, Jessica, Kaia and Cole. Survived by sister, Gladys Cole and brother Mick as well as several nieces and nephews.

George was actively involved in Richmond Senior Men’s Fastball for many years, and was known to his friends in local circles as “The Voice of Steveston Park”. A lifelong golf enthusiast and an avid curler who made many friends at the Richmond Winter Club and Marpole Curling Club. He was an associate member of ANAF #284 in Steveston. Before he retired in 2000, he was employed at Argus Carriers Ltd. for many years. At George’s request, there will be no service.

Turning Point Recovery Society is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to helping those who desire to stop using drugs and alcohol in a safe, supportive abstinence-based environment.

In 1982, two men seeking to stay sober themselves, decided to invite several other men and women to join them and share an apartment while they worked through the challenges of early recovery.

From that apartment, the entity known today as Turning Point grew.

In 1984, several leaders of Vancouver’s business community joined with these pioneers and formed a registered Society: the Western Keys to Recovery Society. That Society later split into the Western Steps to Recovery Society (the operating body) and the Western Recovery Foundation (the asset holders). Boston Pizza began in Edmonton, Alberta on August 12, 1964 when Greek immigrant Gus Agioritis opened Boston Pizza and Spaghetti House. By 1970, Boston Pizza had 17 locations in Western Canada, 15 of which were franchised.

One of the first franchisees was Jim Treliving, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. He got the rights to open a restaurant in Penticton, British Columbia. While in Penticton he met up with George Melville who was a chartered accountant. He acted as Treliving’s business consultant for four years then in 1973 became Treliving’s partner in the business. Over 10 years, they built 16 restaurants in B.C. In 1983, Treliving and Melville acquired the Boston Pizza chain.

The two divested 15 of their restaurants to other franchisees, and set up their head office in Richmond.

In 1997, the chain expanded to eastern Canada. The first eastern location opened in Ottawa in September 1998. The company later opened a regional office in Laval, Quebec in April 2004. Today there are 334 Boston Pizza restaurants in Canada.
