Man must forfeit cash to court after childhood buddy disappears by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter Sticking up for a friend who’s in trouble with the law has proven to be a costly gesture for a local man. Richmond’s Hoai Huu Vu was ordered by the B.C. Supreme Court last week to forfeit $60,000 to the court after a friend accused of being an international ecstasy trafficker failed to show for a court date and disappeared. Vu’s childhood friend, 26-year-old Minh Tan Le, was the subject of an FBI investigation in 2006 that culminated in Le’s arrest along with nine others. According to a court judgement, Le is accused of “working closely with (a co-accused) to supply drugs for distributors in California and to ship large quantities of methamphetamine to Sydney, Australia.” The court ruled last year that Le should be extradited, but he appealed the decision and was granted bail in June of 2009 on a $200,000 surety put forward by Vu and another one of Le’s friends, Hai Trung Hoang. J.J. McIntyre, a lawyer who represented both Vu and Hoang, said it’s been an expensive lesson for both of his young clients, whom he described as “unsophisticated” and who knew little about the justice system. Asked how he would advise anyone put on the spot to provide a surety for a friend accused of a crime, McIntyre said: “I would say, do you re-

ally know this person? Do you know what they’re charged with? Do you realize you could forfeit the entire amount of your promise?” While Vu and Hoang both regularly monitored Le’s activity, to ensure he was making his court appearances and working and abiding by his bail conditions, that ultimately didn’t prove to be enough. Vu told the court that had he been aware of all the circumstances of Le’s criminal activity, he would not have agreed to act as his surety. Vu was 27 when he agreed to provide the surety, and had known Vu for 16 years. Vu claims he would go by Le’s house after work every weekend to ensure he was home, and that initially Le was abiding by his conditions. Hoang, also in his late 20s, hired Le, a former schoolmate, to work at his restaurant but was also unaware of the serious nature of the allegations against Le. B.C. Supreme Court Justice Miriam Maisonville said she took into account the due diligence and the circumstances of Vu and Hoang, and that they had a “limited understanding of their obligations.” Vu was ordered to pay $60,000 while Hoang must forfeit $70,000 to the court. McIntyre said that Le remains on the lam, and it’s not known if he’s left the country or is dead. If Le ever resurfaces, he will be on the hook for the $200,000 surety, and Vu and Hoang can sue him for the return of their money.

Christine Lyon photo Ted Hiebert and Doug Jarvis merged art with quantum physics and a pseudoscience of ‘imaginary solutions.’ The result is a new exhibition at Richmond Art Gallery, for which curators held seances with a dead playwright for material. It also includes a 476-day experiment of growing a nose hair. One letter-writer calls it one of the ‘worst ever public exhibitions of modern art.’ See richmondreview.com for that letter; Page 14 for the story; and Page 27 for photos from the opening.

Richmond MLAs back Falcon for premier Rob Howard and John Yap come out in support of Kevin Falcon; no favourite yet for Linda Reid by Christine Lyon Staff Reporter Richmond Centre MLA Rob Howard and RichmondSteveson MLA John Yap are among those supporting Kevin Falcon’s bid to replace Gordon Campbell as premier. On Tuesday Falcon took over frontrunner status in the B.C. Liberal leadership race, with at least 10 MLAs backing his bid to replace Gordon Campbell as party leader and B.C.’s next premier. Howard said Falcon’s “unique blend of consultation and then action” likely endears him to many MLAs. “He’ll consult but he’s not afraid to make the decisions and get stuff done as well.”

Falcon has a history of consultation, listening and making decisions based on fact, Howard said, and despite the Surrey-Cloverdale MLA’s reputation for being on the right wing of the Liberal party, Howard believes he can appeal to a range of voters. “I’ve seen great evidence from him that he’s willing to listen to arguments regardless from which side of the spectrum the arguments come from,” Howard said. “I think he can bring a new dynamic, a youthful energy to the discussion; he’s a great speaker, a great debater.” Yap said Falcon has demonstrated his leadership abilities in handling the tough transportation and health portfolios. “I believe Kevin Falcon is a new-generation leader

who has the skills, the background, the experience to be a great premier,” Yap said. Falcon is able to listen and take action, and as a young family man he has an appreciation for the needs of many British Columbians, Yap said. “I think it’s important to look to a leader who can bring people together, and he’s demonstrated that,” Yap said. On Wednesday, Mike de Jong announced he is also seeking the leadership of the B.C. Liberal Party. Speaking from his hometown of Abbotsford before a crowd of supporters, de Jong invited “free enterprisers from across the province” to become directly involved in the process of selecting the next premier. — with files from Black Press

Leaves block drainage efforts Tuesday’s heavy rains left ditches brimming with water by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter Tuesdays’s heavy rains combined with high tide to leave local ditches brimming with water, school fields transformed into lakes and roadways flooded. City of Richmond spokesperson Cynthia Lockrey said the city received nearly three dozen flooding calls as of 1 p.m. Tuesday as Environment Canada issued a heavy rainfall warning for the Lower Mainland. The volume of water wasn’t overworking Richmond’s pumping stations, but rather leaves were clogging catch basins and storm sewers,

resulting in roadway hazards, Lockrey said. During these types of weather conditions, there’s a lot locals can do to assist the city. Residents are invited to walk out to the end of their driveways and clear the storm grates of leaves and other debris, though Lockrey advises people avoid doing so in the dark or during times of heavy traffic. Some people rake leaves and deposit them in the gutter, but that blocks the drains, she said. Sunshine is forecast for Friday, with Saturday looking mostly sunny, though temperatures are expected to dip toward the freezing mark again.

Home invasion suspect charged 57-year-old man charged with attempted murder by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter A home invasion suspect has now been charged with two counts of attempted murder following a break-in at a home on the 9300 block of Parksville Drive early Friday morning. Bruce William MacDonald, 57, has also been charged with breaking and entering, theft over $5,000 and four counts of breaching his probation. As first reported at richmondreview.com, MacDonald was arrested by Mounties on the Trans-Canada Highway between Salmon Arm and Sicamous after local police sent out an alert that he might be headed that way following the Friday morning attacks. Salmon Arm police spotted the vehicle, and followed MacDonald as he was negotiating with police over a cellular phone and travelling well below the posted highway speed limit. MacDonald’s vehicle was tracked from overhead by an RCMP helicopter, and he eventually pulled over and was arrested without incident. MacDonald is accused of breaking into a local home and attacking a woman and a man inside the home, both of whom suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the attack that occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Nov. 26. MacDonald is also facing assault and death threat charges in a domestic violence incident on Oct. 2. Police are not disclosing whether one of the victims of Friday’s home invasion is the same as the complainant in the domestic violence case against MacDonald. There’s a ban on publication of the victim’s name. MacDonald is next scheduled to appear in Richmond court on Dec. 15 at 9:30 a.m.

Santa Claus is a man of tradition. He always seems to be wearing a velvet red suit, he still uses reindeer to travel and as far as he’s concerned, bushy beards never go out of style. And although he likes handing out the latest in gifts, he prefers traditional methods of communicating—like face-to-face chats and letters. So get your pens and pencil crayons out and write Santa an old fashioned letter. He wants to know about your hopes and dreams— and what you’d like for Christmas—and he’s anxious to read about it in The Richmond Review. Mail or drop off your letters to The Richmond Review (140-5671 No. 3 Rd., Richmond, B.C., V6X 2C7). You can also e-mail entries to santa@richmondreview. com. We’ll publish the most creative entries on Dec. 18, and one lucky writer will receive a $100 gift card from Best Buy. Deadline for entries is Wednesday, Dec. 15.

by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter The Asian organized crime group responsible for a massive shipment of ecstasy precursor chemicals in Richmond earlier this month is also behind what’s described as the largest counterfeit cigarette seizure in B.C. history. The cigarette and chemical seizures occurred just days apart, both in Richmond, but it wasn’t until Tuesday morning that police unveiled the size of the cigarette bust, described as more than 10 million cigarettes worth nearly $5 million. A Burnaby man and six men of Chinese citizenship are facing charges. RCMP Const. Michael McLaughlin said this case illustrates that organized crime is diversifying its activities to wherever it can make money. Earlier this month, The Richmond Review revealed the massive seizure of thousands of kilograms of a precursor chemical used in the manufacture of the street drug ecstasy. McLaughlin said other contraband cigarettes have been found to contain plastic, mould and even pocket lint, adding to the already carcinogenic hazards of smoking. Like the chemical precursor seizure, the contraband cigarettes, which were

knockoffs of Marlboro and du Maurier, were first noticed in a shipping container at the Port of Vancouver. The 51,000 cartons of cigarettes were stacked on 50 pallets and the shipment originated in China. And much as they did with the chemical precursors, police did a controlled delivery of the cigarettes and then arrested the seven men at an undisclosed Richmond location. McLaughlin said the cigarettes were likely destined for multiple locations in Canada. —with files from Black Press

Fair trade fair this Saturday in Richmond Items sold will help artisans in developing countries by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter St. Alban’s Church will be the site of a fair trade fair this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., where all sorts of goods produced in developing countries, such as pottery, tree ornaments and traditional decorative dress, will be amongst the offering. Deneanne Quamme is hopeful that the local community will again come out to assist a worthy cause through their Christmas shopping. Quamme said the annual fair directly supports the producers of these goods. The items that are sold will be replaced by purchasing goods directly from the people who make them in countries such as Mexico, Jamaica and Guatemala. By cutting out the middleman, the money goes straight to support those who really need it, she said. Some 300 people attended last year’s fair, which raised thousands of dollars. Organized by the Richmond Kairos Committee, a church-based social justice group, the fair will also feature ethnic foods and music and baked goods. Justice groups, including Amnesty International, will be setting up information tables to raise public awareness about a variety of important issues.

Trial begins in Richmond pawnbroker’s 2004 slaying Kien Beng Tan is charged with second-degree murder by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter

Register for Winter and Spring 2011 programs now!

For the family of murdered pawnbroker Sonny Le, the trial that began Monday isn’t likely to shed much light on the motive behind the 2004 slaying. Crown Counsel Greg Weber said Tuesday morning that the reason behind the fatal attack is “not easily discerned,” though Weber suspects it had to do with the pawning of items and the cost of buying them back. Kien Beng Tan had hocked a camera, laptop computer, a watch and an amethyst ring at Le’s pawn shop before Le was stabbed to death. Weber said the trial is expected to last two to three weeks, during which time the issue of the admissibility of a taped confession will be argued. Tan, who holds Malaysian citizenship, admitted to killing the 50-yearold Le during a jailhouse confession he made to a cellmate who was actually an undercover police officer. Le was the owner of Lee’s Jewellers and Loans, at 6044 No. 3 Rd., and was found stabbed to death by Mounties after his family reported him missing in May of 2004. Tan was finally arrested and extradited to Canada in 2008 to face the

murder charge following an investigation by Richmond Mounties that tracked him across the globe. In 2008, Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, explained that Tan has long been in the police’s sights. Tan gave police investigators a sample of his DNA, the genetic blueprint of life contained in blood and other cells of the body, all the way back in 2006 while Tan was in Malaysia. But local Crown counsel had fears that Tan didn’t understand the jeopardy that came attached with offering his DNA, and that the case might be tossed as a result, and so

urged police to get a sample another way. In 2008, police in Belgium arrested Tan for credit card fraud, and at the same time obtained a sample of his DNA. Tan’s DNA fingerprint was shared with Richmond Mounties, and in August of 2008 the Crown approved a charge of second-degree murder against Tan. Weber expects to call 15 witnesses to the stand during the B.C. Supreme Court trial. It’s not know how many witnesses the defence will call, or whether Tan will take the stand, Weber said.

Sod turned for housing project by Christine Lyon Staff Reporter Politicians and seniors housing advocates gathered in Steveston Friday afternoon to celebrate the construction of a long-awaited housing complex. Located at 4071 Chatham St., the 144unit Maple Residences will include 114 apartments with support services and 30 subsidized apartments for low-income seniors. The federal and provincial governments are contributing a combined $3.9 million for the subsidized units. The province will also provide $34.4 million in construction financing. Emceeing Friday’s celebration was Mel Goodwin, chair of the Steveston 284 Seniors’ Housing Society, which will manage

the residences. Steveston Unit 284 of the Army Navy and Air Force Veterans of Canada provided land equity for the project valued at $8.3 million. Minister Responsible for Housing Rich Coleman, Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie, ANAF Provincial Command President Bill Calvert and Delta-Richmond MP John Cummins spoke at the event and participated in a ceremonial sod-turning. “Finding suitable affordable accommodation is a concern for many Canadians and I’m delighted that these new housing units will help meet that need in Richmond,” Cummins said. Construction of the complex and a new ANAF club house is anticipated to be complete by December 2011.

espite its critics, public consultation is a meaningful part of a democracy. Much in the way public hearings give residents a chance to voice opinions on developments and bylaws, surveys and open houses allow citizens to be heard by staff and civic politicians. Richmond council now has an opportunity to make that happen. Council is faced with deciding whether to purchase one or more of the iconic Vancouver Biennale sculptures installed in Richmond. But first, it must approve a prudent proposal from city staff—to consult the public on the matter. Some councillors have already said no. In a recent committee vote, two councillors voted in favour of public consultation, two voted against, suggesting the idea should be tossed out altogether. Coun. Harold Steves said the art isn’t interesting enough, and at $300,000 to $800,000 apiece, it would be “financially irresponsible” for the city to buy them. But Coun. Evelina Halsey-Brandt said the works are fulfilling their purpose by creating “passionate discussion.” Not allowing a fair public consultation process would be “wrong,” she added. Politically, any decision around these pieces of public art will be contentious. The installation of the now famous Miss Mao sculpture on Elmbridge Way caused an eruption of opinion. Some suggested it was a victory for public art and free speech, others said it honoured two of history’s brutal socialist dictators. This is an important decision. Miss Mao, Wind Waves at Garry Point, Water #10, Heads and Doors of Knowledge are all iconic works that city staff suggest are worth protecting. They’re here as part of an exhibition, which wraps up next spring. Then, they’ll be auctioned off, but Richmond has the opportunity to buy them before they’re carted away. They come at a high cost, but given the relatively small amount the city has spent on the arts in the past, the price is right. These pieces are thought-provoking and have made us stand up and pay attention. They’ll quickly become part of the social fabric of this fast-growing city—if city council lets them. It’s at least worth a talk with taxpayers.

hatchet job. Sloppy. That was the initial reaction from Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett to my column last week on his noisy departure from the B.C. Liberal cabinet. Reviewing those events with Bennett and other sources, I realize I not only made a factual error, I missed a significant story about the end of Gordon Campbell’s leadership. Why did Bennett publicly break with Campbell, first to criticize his sweeping reorganization of resource ministries, and then to call for Campbell to go? Was he upset about losing responsibility for mining? Was this another hot-tempered lapse in judgment, like his insulting e-mail to a local critic that prompted Bennett to resign as minister of state for mining in 2007? No. It was a calmly cal-

culated rebellion, a solo effort to push Campbell out before it was too late for the B.C. Liberal Party. I called Bennett a “political suicide bomber.” He prefers “change agent.” Step one was a carefully timed call to a reporter to blast the resource ministry shuffle, which Bennett views as a disaster of oneman rule. “I knew the premier was doing his TV statement, I think it was the next day,” Bennett told me. “And I figured, I have to make a statement about this now, and put some pressure on the premier.” Bennett knew this alone could get him bounced out of cabinet. But with NDP leader Carole James under fire for kicking Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson out of caucus without discussion, and Campbell’s TV address pending, he expected to survive for awhile. Step two was an appearance on a CKNW talk show a few days later, saying Campbell should step down immediately. In both interviews he was careful to be “respectful” of Campbell, but this was another clear breach of cabinet solidarity. He was fired from cabinet Nov. 17, and launched his attack on Campbell’s “bullying.”

Bennett says his decision to sacrifice his cherished job as energy minister began on Sept. 14. That’s the day a B.C. Liberal-controlled legislative committee opted for a province-wide vote on repealing the harmonized sales tax. Campbell immediately announced that the

the intermediary was told some MLAs were prepared to sit as independents when the house resumes in February if Campbell was still premier. When Campbell announced he was stepping down, he gave no date. Bennett says he and other fed-up MLAs became

government would accept a simple majority of those who vote, much less than the Recall and Initiative Act requires. The B.C. Liberals had held a two-day caucus retreat in Kelowna, “and that option was never, ever discussed,” Bennett said. “I just thought, if this guy stays, we are cooked. The B.C. Liberal government will never get elected again.” His solo mission followed at least one group effort to push Campbell towards the door. Bennett says he was one of 10 MLAs who agreed to sign a letter, politely suggesting Campbell bow out at the party’s Penticton convention Nov. 19-20. An intermediary, a former cabinet minister, got involved. Bennett said

concerned that Campbell might stay until the HST vote next fall, or longer. The party has since scrambled to reschedule its convention, change its voting structure to give rural areas a chance (Bennett says that too was his initiative, last July) and select a new leader on Feb. 26. Mission accomplished. • Correction: I wrote last week that Bennett prematurely disclosed a revenue sharing offer for the Prosperity mine. Provincial negotiators had made that offer privately more than a year earlier. My apologies. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. Buying sculptures would be ‘slap in face’

Lauren Elviss, B.C. NDP leader Carole James and Louise McManus on Friday.

Editor: When Miss Mao Trying to Poise Herself at the Top of Lenin’s Head was first installed, I, along with many other outraged residents, criticized the decision to install this sculpture. I thought it was inappropriate and in poor taste. Now adding further insult to injury, Richmond council is considering buying some of these pieces. Has the world gone completely mad? I am afraid Richmond has become an international embarrassment and an international laughing stock for cities that have real art and value real art. Branko Popazivanov Richmond

Carole James gets standing ovation Editor: Richmond New Democrats extended a very warm welcome to NDP leader Carole James on Friday, Nov. 26 at a local church hall. This visit was part of James’ ongoing community outreach campaign. In addressing the enthusiastic crowd, the provincial NDP leader covered a wide range of topics relevant to British Columbians. These included four of NDP’s top priorities for the province: strong economy, investment in people, sustainable environment and an honest, open and transparent government. James stated that an NDP government would not only preserve but also strengthen the Agricultural Land

Reserve, raise the minimum wage, promote a green economy and take good care of the most vulnerable members of our society. She emphasized that rather than promoting the politics of division, it is pertinent that the government, business, labour and environmentalists work together for the betterment of British Columbians. James received a standing ovation for her remarks and promised to visit Richmond more often in the future. For Richmond New Democrats and well wishers it provided an excellent opportunity to meet and greet their leader. Balwant Sanghera Richmond

letters Province is ‘deeply committed’ to helping people in need Editor: Re: “It’s time for government to work for all people,” Letters, Nov. 27. I’d like to respond to the appeal regarding disabled people who receive income assistance to have inheritances exempted as income. The province is deeply committed to helping people who are in need. Since 2001, spending on disability assistance has increased by 150 per cent, from $307 million to $771 million, and we are proud that B.C. is home to some of the most

comprehensive supports for low-income individuals in Canada. Under the legislation, an inheritance is considered unearned income and will be deducted from monthly assistance. However, we recognize that many people with disabilities find they have extra costs because of additional challenges they face, and it is not always possible to earn additional income. In those cases, the Ministry of Social Development provides several alternatives so they can

make needed changes to their home or pay for caregivers, and up to $5,484 can be used to promote independent living. Disbursements from assets held in trusts do not impact assistance levels, and all funds held in, and payments from, a Registered Disability Savings Plan up to $200,000 are also exempt. If anyone has any questions or would like to discuss this further, please contact me at my constituency office. John Yap MLA for Richmond-Steveston

Hedge is actually row of trees Editor: Maybe I can get the last word regarding South Arm Park. I was never against the basketball court there, If it can help keep some youngsters occupied and out of trouble I am all for it. When we went to look at the plans at the community centre we were assured by more than a few people that there was to be a hedge on the south side of the court to muffle the sound and catch debris that may be flying about. But the next thing we knew was the planting of a dozen sixmetre trees in place of a hedge. The trees may look very nice there, I just don’t like to be lied to. Brink Nielsen Richmond

Biennale art a waste of cash Editor: Once again, we see city council in its usual headlong rush to spend. The proposed purchase of one or more of the Vancouver Biennale sculptures that were inflicted us is but another example of a lack of priorities, logic, and in my opinion, intelligence. How many on council would splurge their own funds on something as useless as most of the art that we have on display? If they are really that desperate to blow resources, perhaps they could consider the purchase of the newly discovered Lulu Island wetlands. This way, we could have a lasting memorial to the way Richmond used to be, rather than an unintelligible mishmash that has been titled art. T.R.(Terry)Murphy Richmond

tion benefiting the Zajac Foundation. On Stave Lake in Mission, B.C., the Zajac Ranch for Special Needs Children is a 16-hectare countrywestern themed summer camp for kids with serious and chronic illnesses and disabilities. Thrasher is on the docket with 25 local and international stars including Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne, the Afro Drums and Dance Ensemble, gender illusionist Symone and actress/comedian Deborah Williams. Red Robinson will host the event. One song Thrasher plans to sing is Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All.” “It is the love for the children, to help the children, and everybody needs someone to look up to,” she said. “I never had any children myself, but I just feel for all the children.” She will also perform “Shake the Foundation” with the Gospel Experience foursome. Thrasher was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio by her mother, grandmother and grandfather—all ministers. She grew up in the gospel church where, every Sunday, she and her two brothers would perform under the Thrasher Singers banner. “It’s still my thing, and I love the gospel music,” Thrasher said. Sunday’s event will give people a chance to enjoy live entertainment at a time when many clubs and restaurants don’t have the funds to hire live musicians, Thrasher said. “It’s a benefit for the children, but also it’ll benefit everybody’s minds with all the different variety of music,” she said. Produced by Richmond residents Marlene Dixon and Terry Wolfe, the variety show promises to be “a sparkling evening of entertainment.” At the accompanying silent auction, people can bid on two Mexican getaways, jewelry, gift baskets and “a wonderful, very sexy package for all the women out there,” said auction co-ordinator Karen Dixon. “We have four hunky firemen that are going to cook a gourmet meal in your home for six people,” she said. Tickets to the Dec. 5 show at Arts Club’s Granville Island Stage are $55 at vancouvertix.com or artsclub.com. Show time is 7:30 p.m.

The art of imagination Curators of new art exhibition held seances with dead playwright by Christine Lyon Staff Reporter Doug Jarvis switches on an electric clothing dryer, takes a seat in a nearby wooden rocking chair and listens to the rhythmic rumbling of the appliance. “As you rock you kind of engage with the sound and the repetitions,” he says. The household machine and adjacent chair are an interactive sound piece at Richmond Art Gallery created by Vancouver artists Julie Gendron and Emma Hendrix. The work is part of More Often Than Always/Less Often Than Never, a new exhibition curated by Jarvis and Ted Hiebert of Victoriabased curatorial collective Noxious Sector. The show runs Nov. 26 to Jan. 23, 2011. The idea behind the exhibit was to merge art with two things: quantum physics and pataphysics— a pseudoscience created by the late French playwright Alfred Jarry, which he defined as “the science of imaginary solutions.” The show revolves around central themes of impossibility and imagination, the curators say. Jarvis and Hiebert put out an international call for artistic submissions and chose eight projects from more than 100 applications. Hiebert admits their cu-

The curators held a series of séances with Alfred Jarry (he died in 1907), who once wrote a manual on how to build a time machine. “We thought it would be really nice to use the Ouija board as a time machine, essentially, to make contact,” says Hiebert. They started asking “yes” or “no” questions, but the planchette wouldn’t point out any straight answers. “Instead of clear answers we started getting these wonderful drawings and so we decided to incorporate the drawings into the exhibition,” Hiebert says. One of the chosen artists is Chikako Maria Mori, who flew in from Japan last week to set up The EastWest Pataphysian Donnation-3. Mori created the multimedia piece in collaboration with fel-

Photos and text which denote his progress—or lack thereof—are on display at the gallery. “The nose hair itself hasn’t grown, but you can see what’s happened to

the solution around it. It’s become this real catalyst for its own environment,” Hiebert says, pointing to the black sludgy fluid that now fills the dish. Hanging from the gallery ceiling is a rubber and sinew “cloud catcher” brimming with white synthetic stuffing. Titled Nuage Blanc; Nuage Noir, it is the work of Quebec’s François Mathieu. “I kind of just like the playfulness of it. The idea of giving substance to something as ephemeral as clouds. To me, it reminds me of all of the childhood moments of staring at the sky and watching the shapes take form,” says Hiebert. One artwork visitors might overlook is the 30.5inch thick pink stripe running around the walls of the presentation space, an idea submitted by Toronto’s Gordon Lebredt. “What we think each of the artists in this show has provided is really a wonderfully poetic encounter with the imaginary,” says Hiebert. “It’s not work that has a clear point or a clear message; it’s more work

that asks you to be curious.” He hopes visitors enjoy looking at the collection. “One of the things about the world that we live in is that you sort of have to make time to be imaginary...The occasions where that is allowed or even encouraged are kind of few and far between,” he says. This is the second Noxious Sector exhibit that has called for international submissions. The curatorial group is most known for organizing the annual World Telekinesis Competition, a tournament in which teams use psychic powers to influence the movement of melting candle wax. The title of the Richmond exhibit comes from the mathematics of probability, which is typically measured between zero and one. “We’re interested in what falls outside of that range,” says Hiebert. When something occurs outside the zero-to-one range, it is said to be true more often than always or less often than never.

ou don’t need to be rich to be a philanthropist. Philanthropy has several definitions, two of which are: • Goodwill to fellow members of the human race; • An act or gift done or made for humanitarian purposes. In Lawrence Scanlan’s new book A Year of Living Generously: Dispatches From the Front Lines of Philanthropy, he shares his own experiences of giving to others. In 2008, Scanlan, a journalist, took a year out from work and decided to volunteer with 12 charitable organizations and do hands-on work at each one, for one month.

His experiences run the gamut from being a pet therapy volunteer at a hospice with his dog Dusty, to building houses with Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans, to working with prisoners for the John Howard Society, and on and on. Scanlan shines a particularly harsh spotlight on the plight of the poor in Canada. After working on the front lines and seeing firsthand the hardships of so many people, he feels like it’s a hopeless struggle to get government to help the homeless, the mentally ill, and the addicted, despite the efforts of support groups and individuals devoted to the cause. One of the people he works with says: “This whole pool of [volunteers] end up feeling good about helping poor people, but none are walking into the mayor’s office and complaining.” He reiterates that it’s not enough just to volunteer our time; we need to actively advocate for those less

fortunate than ourselves. Scanlan remind us of an Aesop quote: “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.” His experiences confirm that helping others is always a good thing, that “walls come down, prejudices are shattered, eyes are opened.” And it all comes down to one person helping another. While his various volunteer stints are a fascinating look into unfamiliar worlds, it’s the questioning that comes after, that’s most powerful. He comes to the conclusion that community activism is not a choice—it’s a responsibility. As one of the cancer patients at a hospice says: “It comes down to what sort of society we want. Are we all individuals clambering over each other to make money or are we somehow responsible for each other and our society?” The stories Scanlan shares are heartbreaking and uplifting all at once, and are nothing if not lessons in humility and selflessness. He

quotes Zell Kravinsky who says: “I used to feel that I had to be good, truly good in my heart and spirit, in order to do good. But it’s the other way around: if you do good, you become better.” Or as the famous Mahatma Gandhi said: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Amen. This is a book

for everyone who cares about anyone. For other popular reading suggestions check out Richmond Public Library’s Web site at www.yourlibrary.ca/ goodbooks/. Shelley Civkin is communications officer with Richmond Public Library. Her column appears every Thursday in The Richmond Review.

eight awards out of 15 possible categories. One of those was Jade Seafood Restaurant, voted Best Cantonese Dim Sum. So, with my guide at my side, we sit down at the Alexandra Road restaurant with owner David Chung. “We want people to come and try our food,” he begins. He means Caucasians or mainstream customers as is the term used these days when referring to non-Asian diners. He says he has seen an increase in the past couple of years, “But not enough.” Gone is their twotier menu (one for Asians and one for mainstream in English). All the dishes have been translated into English—no small feat since most don’t translate well (termite mushrooms?). The menu goes on for pages because, as Chung points out, Chinese like variety. Also included in the menu are half-size portions, Chinese tapas dishes for two or three people. Chung encourages mainstream diners to spend a few minutes with a manager and ask about the food.

the three-course dinner which includes an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. Seafood, as the name says, is confirmed by the large tank that contains geoduck (more popular than shark’s fin soup

with Chinese diners) and Russian lobster. (Geoduck and Alaskan King Crab—available late February—are two B.C. delicacies prized by foreigners.) We end our conversation with hot almond soup with a sesame dumpling. There are approximately 20 dim sum restaurants in Richmond, so he’s pleased to have the diners’ vote. When it comes to dim sum, he says that hot is best and that means no cart. He understands that cart service is a good way for mainstream customers to see what they want, but he says it is wasteful, not hot, and can be low in quality. As well, at Jade they want to serve the guest, and move away from “the old Chinese way to grab the food.” And with that said, a beautiful bowl of hot and sour seafood soup is placed in front of me, followed by pickled ginger with century egg and prawn roll, and a fish and baked mushroom pie. “Chinese people don’t put cheese in their food, but we do,” he says of this pie, one of their most popular dishes. They carry many dishes that can’t be found anywhere else. Dim sum head chef Rong-Hui Zhang practises the craft with innovation and artistry, as he’s done since his beginnings at a five-star restaurant in Guangzhou, China in 1984. He began part of the Jade team in 2008 and his award-winning creativity has definitely carved out a name for the restaurant. The team at Jade includes head chef Tony Luk, known as the “Master of Shark’s Fin” with 30 years of experience and second head chef Chi-Ling Tam, known as the “Master of the Wok.” Chung’s influence can be seen on the menu. Italian Prawns—which are cooked perfectly— have a flavour I can’t place and that’s because it’s not a flavour I expect to find in a Chinese restaurant: balsamic vinegar. Beef Tenderloin Peking Style includes exotic mushrooms. Each dish is exquisite. And not as expensive as you may think a high-end establishment would be (dim sum begins at $3.98 and there’s a 20 per cent discount until 11am). Portions are very generous and for $19.88 you can opt for

Wildcats claw out fifth at provincials McMath shows plenty of character at junior high school girls’ volleyball finals by Don Fennell Sports Editor A few centimetres may have been all that separated the R.A. McMath Wildcats from a provincial high school junior girls’ volleyball championship. But, it was still tough to take. Co-hosts along with the StevestonLondon Sharks (which failed to win a game) of the 24-team tournament last weekend, the Wildcats appeared to be in control of their quarter-final match against Kelowna Christian Knights. Though they lost the opening game 25-10, the Wildcats rebounded to win the second game by an identical score and were up 13-12 in the deciding third game. Everything was pointing to a victory and a semifinal showdown with the Kelowna Owls when they served the ball—barely—out of bounds. The Knights got the point and the momentum, scored two quick points, and won the match. “It was one of those things,” said McMath coach Rob Forbes. “But (Kelowna Christian) was also a very good team. When you get to the top eight at this level any team can win a match.” Naturally disappointed, the Wildcats shed a few tears but quickly regained their focus to defeat Surrey Christian Falcons in two straight games. The match was played only a half hour after McMath’s loss to Kelowna Christian. “I was really proud of how the girls played, especially having to play right away against another team in

the same boat as us,” Forbes said. “I was very proud of the kids. They showed a lot of character in doing that.” The Wildcats capped tournament play with another straight-set victory over Coquitlam’s Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils in the fifth-place game. Though they were upset by Cor-

relieu of Quesnel in their opening round-robin game, the Pacific Academy Breakers of Surrey proved to be the class of the tournament. Once they got rolling, no one was able to keep pace with the Breakers who defeated South Kamloops in the semifinals and Kelowna Christian two straight in the final.

Trojans reach semis

Traditional kung fu comes to Richmond

by Don Fennell Sports Editor The Hugh Boyd junior high school football season is done—a bit prematurely for the Trojans’ liking. “We still feel like we had some business we didn’t finish,” said head coach Pete Adams, after Hugh Boyd’s 14-0 loss to Mission in the AA semifinal Thursday at Abbotsford’s W.J. Mouat Secondary. (The game was originally scheduled to be played at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex but was snowed out). “I don’t think we played particularly well,” Adams explained. “That’s not saying (Mission) still wouldn’t have beaten us, but I think we felt some intimidation. But they were beatable. Had we played really well and lost it would have been a lot easier to feel good about this season.” But with the third-best finish (8-2) in school history, Adams said the 2010 edition of the Trojans has a lot to be proud of. And with the majority of the players eligible to return next season, the 2011 season could be even more rewarding. “I think the players had fun and we’ve got a lot of kids already excited about next year,” said Adams. See Page 22

Pacific Academy was led by tournament MVP Rachel Funk, whose dad Tim is the Breakers’ head coach. Rachel Funk, who played the middle position, was maybe five foot seven but was a tower of power against opponents as much as six foot two. “She’d read the play and was rarely deceived by her opposition setter,”

marvelled McMath coach Forbes. “She always gave her a team a chance to get the ball back up and on offence rarely got blocked because she’s such a smart player.” Speaking of smart, talented players, Forbes was beaming over the play of several Wildcats including Natasha Magnus who was selected to the tournament first all-star team and second team all-star Rebecca Hansen.

Richard Lam photo Octavia Lau performs her routine at the Traditional Kung Fu Invitational Competition Saturday at MacNeil Secondary, winning the 12-and-under weapons category.

Jessica Lo has been practising kung fu less than two years. But, she’s obviously a quick study. Lo, 11, earned two first-place finishes in her age category at the Traditional Kung Fu Invitational Competition on Saturday at A.R. MacNeill Secondary. She won the weapons form and the hand form events. Alvin Ling, 14, also won the weapons event in his age category, while Cecilia Murphy was second in the adult tai chi event, and Derek Lo, 9, placed third in his age group in the hand form event. The competition, which attracted more than 60 competitors (some participating in two or three different events), was organized by Jack Wong, head instructor of the Traditional Kung Fu Training Centre. “It is the only true Chinese kung

fu martial arts competition probably in North America,” said Wong, who started the club in honour of his former instructor, and to carry on the tradition. “There are a lot of competitions, probably one every month in the region, but those are combined open events with other styles of martial arts. Wong said kung fu is the least known of the martial arts, perhaps because it is the least marketed. Additionally, most instructors, including himself, only devote a portion of their time to it. “For myself, it’s a hobby,” he said. There are about 40 kung fu artists, half of them Richmondites, who train a couple of hours a week at the local training centre. They practise different styles of Chinese martial arts: wushu, hung gar, praying mantis, chen and yang styles tai chi.

He was also pleased for Riley Galloway, who got to play a lot after transferring from Matthew McNair Secondary, which does not have a football program. “We also had a lot of support from our parent group,” said Adams. “I think while we had high hopes at the start of the season, we had a really young team and we exceeded expectations as far as the win-loss record is concerned.” Travis Coutts, Bryce Mosley and Jordan Lee all Limited model shown

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Don Gilmore on November 24, 2010 at the Richmond Hospital, BC at the age of 79. He was predeceased by his parents Cap and Ethel and his brothers Ralph and Bob. He will be missed by his sister Shirley; sister-in-laws, Barbara and Ila (Fred); nephews Bobby, Wayne, Andrew (Dee), Wes (Donna), Scott and Jason (Colleen); nieces Gail (Albert), Linda (Ed) and Colleen (Reno); many great nieces and nephews and friends. Don was a life long resident of Richmond where he spent most of his life farming, along with his brothers, on the family farm where they grew potatoes and raised dairy cows. He served as a Director on the BC Vegetable Co-op and enjoyed hunting in his spare time. Special thanks to Gail for her dedication to Don for the last 11 years of his life and to Dr. J. Vortel and all the other doctors and nurses at Richmond Hospital for their excellent care and compassion. Thanks to the staff and residents at Gilmore Gardens where he enjoyed living in the latter part of his life. Kevin Wong won the Golden Boot Award as the top scorer in the tournament with eight goals. “I am very proud of this year’s team as we improved in each game as the year went on,” said coach Paul Eberhardt. “All of the boys should be very proud of this accomplishment. Georgies: going for gold Excellence in the industry recognized with awards TRICIA LESLIE Putting your work forward for extremely close inspection and judging by industry peers can be a daunting prospect. Yet that’s exactly what many B.C. homebuilders, renovators, developers, designers

Named after Captain George Vancouver, the Georgies were started by a group of industry professionals in 1992 as a way to provide value to the residential construction industry and communities throughout British Columbia. “It was a way to showcase and celebrate the excellent work that local people do in our industry,” says Scott Whitemarsh, executive

For the first time in more than a year, housing affordability improved in Canada in the third quarter of 2010, according to a report released Monday by RBC Economics. The Housing Trends and Affordability report says a drop in mortgage rates and some softening in home prices made it easier for Canadian buyers to purchase their homes in recent months, after four consecutive quarters of rising home ownership costs. “The improvement in affordability during the third quarter has relieved some of the stress that had been mounting in Canada’s housing market over the past year,” says RBC senior economist Robert Hogue. The report notes that, at the national level, the third-quarter improvement in affordability reversed almost two-thirds of the cumulative deterioration that took place over the previous four quarters. RBC’s Housing Affordability Measure calculates how much pre-tax income is required to cover all the costs associated with owning a home. All provinces saw improvements in housing affordability in the third quarter, especially British Columbia, but the cost of home ownership in B.C. remains high by historical standards, the report notes. “Higher mortgage rates will be the dominant factor raising home ownership costs beyond the short-term, although increasing household income – as the job situation continues to strengthen in in Canada – will provide some positive offset,” Hogue says. “We expect housing demand and supply to remain mostly in balance overall, setting the course for very modest home price increases.” For the full report, visit www.rbc.com/ economics/

‘A very high level of competition’ CONTINUED FROM P.1

gem in South Surrey – because “there isn’t any sub-par work.” “The product speaks for itself,” he says. CHBA BC president Vicki Gerrits, who has been a Georgie finalist 46 times and won 16 gold Georgies with her company Homescape Building and Design, agrees. “It’s a very high level of competition. We’re a small-volume builder and we entered for the first time in 1996. And it was probably one of the single best things we could have ever done,” Gerrits says. “It’s an automatic quantifier, a third-part endorsement ... it’s so valuable to have someone else tell other people that you’re good at what you do.” With the 19th annual awards underway, people now recognize the Georgie Award symbol and know what the awards are, Gerrits says, noting she always displays her Georgie logos proudly. But you don’t have to win a Georgie to feel proud, she adds. “Anyone who is a finalist should be proud of what they’ve accomplished. When you see the product, the competition you’re up against ... it’s incredible.” Portrait Homes, for example, snagged 11 Georgie finalist spots for its work in the master-planned community of Silver Ridge in Maple Ridge – a development that has already been recognized with more than 80 industry

awards. A Georgie Award is recognized as an “industry stamp of quality,” notes a Portrait release. “We’re all very pleased to be finalists,” says Portrait Homes marketing and sales manager Troy Steine. “We are fortunate to have such a beautiful place to build, but (the recognition) is great. It reinforces that we’re doing the right thing.” That sentiment is echoed at Clay Construction, where owner and president Larry Clay has been named a finalist twice for two luxurious South Surrey homes he built in Morgan Heights. The high-end homebuilder says it’s his first time entering the Georgie Awards. “We are super excited. To even be a finalist ... it’s a real honour,” Clay says. “We find that customers who want highend homes know who the Georgie winners are.” Whitemarsh notes the awards are becoming more consumer-focused, with a new Customer Choice Georgie powered by AVID ratings, and two new categories that reflect local trends in homebuilding and renovating: Best Outdoor Living Space and Best Condo Renovation. More and more people are seeking to create outdoor living areas, or extensions of their indoor space, while sales and renos of older condos are on the rise, Whitemarsh says. Finalists in all 43 categories were selected from hundreds of nominations by a judging panel brought in from outside the province. Judges are always from other provinces or the U.S. to ensure impartiality, and are chosen for their experience in the industry and expertise in their field, he notes. “I think it’s important to recognize the professional builders and renovators out there, for their leadership and innovation as well as their high-quality work,” says Whitemarsh. “Not a lot of people want to stand up and be scrutinized by their peers.” Winners will be honoured at a gala event in Vancouver March 5.
