Theatre inks shortterm lease; popular screenings end by Christine Lyon Staff Reporter After almost two decades, the popular seniors’ movie at Richmond Centre has come to an end. For the last 18 years, customers 55 and over have been able to attend a free movie at the Famous Players Richmond Centre 6 theatre on the second Wednesday of the month in exchange for non-perishable food donations to the Richmond Food Bank. Yesterday morning a long lineup formed in front of the cinema and snaked down the hall into the food court. All were waiting to see the ďŹ nal holiday-themed movie: a choice between The Family Man or Fred Claus. The ďŹ lm was preceded by coffee, cake, thank-you speeches and a visit from Santa. “I’m going to miss it,â€? said Jessie Gonsales, who has been going to the monthly movie for 10 years. She and everyone else in line was carrying a bag full of cans, packaged foods and other nonperishable donations. “Everyone brings something. [The food bank] is going to miss out this year,â€? she said. See Page 3

Search-and-rescue mission of another kind stays course

Union Gospel’s Mobile Mission helps Lower Mainland’s homeless

by Martin van den Hemel

by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter Arnie Mulessa and Scott Robertson may not have feathered wings or magical powers, but they are real life guardian angels for a whole host of homeless people throughout the Lower Mainland. They are the heart and soul of Union Gospel Mission’s Mobile Mission Program, and can be seen driving through Richmond, Burnaby, Surrey, New Westminster and the Tri-Cities, late at night, searching under bridges and behind dark and desolate warehouses for the telltale signs

of the homeless. “Both of those guys are amazing people,” said Union Gospel’s Derek Weiss. “They’ve got a spirit of service about them, but they’ve also got a heartiness about them.” From Monday to Friday, Mulessa and Robertson work from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. on a search-andrescue mission of sorts, pointing their flashlights at the nooks and crannies of Richmond where those without homes seek shelter from the elements and a good night’s sleep. They offer food, socks and a helping hand. Since 2008, a white Dodge Sprinter van

emblazoned with the Union Gospel Mission’s insignia has served as a welcome sight for the dozens of homeless they visit each night. Through their work, Mulessa, the driver, and Robertson, the outreach worker, have developed relationships with people who would often rather fade into the background and go unnoticed. And especially during these cold and damp days as winter approaches, the first thing that’s requested isn’t a warm meal or a hot drink, but a pair of clean, dry, comfortable socks. At this time of year, the mission hands out 1,000

pairs of socks. Weiss encourages locals to call the Mobile Mission at 604-786-4668 if they see somebody who might be homeless and in need of a hand. Just how many homeless are there in Richmond and the Lower Mainland? That’s a tough figure to put a finger on, but efforts are underway to get a better picture. Basic demographic data is being collected by the mission to try to come up with some

firmer numbers. Weiss said a few hundred homeless people receive assistance from the Mobile Mission each week. Although the mission tries to spread God’s love, Weiss said Mulessa and Robertson are aware of one basic fact: “People who have dropped out of society and living homeless don’t want to be preached at.” About a year ago, a man living on the streets was asked if he was ready to get sober, and

he agreed. The mission gave him the support he was asking for. “He hadn’t talked to his daughter in 12 years, and Scott had been encouraging him to call her,” Weiss said. “To watch the expression on his face from the day before,” recalls Mulessa, “and the fear that he had to call his daughter...to see his face after he got in touch with her, that was the defining moment for me. That is what this is all about.”

Hockey academy promises to be ‘relatively affordable’ From Page 1

This teacher will also be an active participant in the program by sponsoring the students during their on-ice training and will be responsible for assessing and reporting on the students’ progress toward the learning outcomes in physical education. A school-based hockey academy is an idea that has long been floated in Richmond, but the school district wanted to be sure such a program was well-researched and supported before considering it. Both Palmer principal Richard Steward and vice-principal Rob Laing were encouraged by the strong show of support in the greater community. “Both of us spoke to numerous people connected with hockey in the

district, and every person expressed a desire to have an academy like this start up and favoured us going forward with the proposal,” said Laing. “They’ve done their homework and worked very hard also with the city, in terms of inquiring about ice,” said Richmond school trustee Linda McPhail, who was pleased to see the proposal championed both at the school level as well as in the hockey community. There will be space for 30 students in the hockey academy, which is open to both male and female students in grades 8 to 12. Participating students will, like their peers, take up to eight classes. Two blocks will be reserved for the hockey academy—one for strength and conditioning and the other for on-ice in-

struction. A report to the board of education, from assistant superintendent Nancy Brennan, supported the proposal. “This academy will have no negative organizational, financial or personnel impact on the district or the school,” Brennan wrote in her report. “It will have a positive impact in its ability to offer academic and athletic opportunities that has not previously been available in Richmond.” The report said the decision to continue each year with the academy should be a school-based decision, made after consultation with senior staff. Consideration must also be given to factors such as level of interest (number of applications), available space (both in school and on the ice) and the avail-

ability of qualified staff. The alternative would have been to deny specialty academy status to the Palmer Hockey Academy, whereby the program would not run, said the report. That would force Richmond students who would be interested in such a program to look elsewhere (for example Delta) to find a similar program that would meet their needs. Palmer principal Richard Steward said the proposed hockey academy at Palmer would be “relatively affordable compared to similar experiences.” Palmer has successfully offered a soccer academy since Sept. 2004, though the program is currently on hiatus for the the 2010-11 school year due to low enrolment.

‘The seniors have been amazing’ From Page 1

Christine Lyon photo Theatre-goers toting bags of non-perishable food bank donations and some happy Richmond Centre elves await the last seniors’ movie at Famous Players Wednesday morning.

Gonsales rides the bus to the theatre where she meets her friend Rita Rasmussen. After the movie, they go to Tim Hortons for lunch. “That’s the day in the month we look forward to,” said Rasmussen. The decision to end the monthly seniors’ movie came after Famous Players recently negotiated a shortterm lease agreement, said mall spokesperson Maria Valley. “We believe that the seniors themselves deserve a proper celebration for all

the work that they’ve done for so many years, and unfortunately with the shortterm lease, we’re not able to confirm when that last movie would otherwise be,” she said. “The seniors have been amazing in collecting all of the cash and the food that’s been donated to the Richmond Food Bank.” Since the inception of the program, almost $8,000 in cash and 86 tonnes of food have been donated to the food bank. That spirit of giving helped Richmond Centre win a Volunteers Are Stars award last

week. Seniors’ movie volunteers joined mall representatives onstage to accept the award. Valley said 250 to 300 seniors attend the free screening each month. A spokesperson for Cineplex Entertainment, which operates Famous Player theatres, could not comment on the details of the short-term lease, but denied rumours the 20-yearold theatre will soon shut its doors. “We don’t have any plans to close the theatre,” said Cineplex’s Pat Marshall.

After serving as the chair of the Richmond Board of Education for seven of the past eight years, Linda McPhail has passed on the mantle to fellow trustee Donna Sargent. At Monday’s board meeting, McPhail said she didn’t toss her name into the ring for consideration. Donna Sargent was elected chair, and Debbie Tablotney was elected vice chair. “I think I’ve had a good run at it and it’s time for others to experience it as well,” she said Tuesday. McPhail said serving as chair has been an enjoyable experience that has led to lots of personal growth. But there are others on the board who are capable of leading as well, and she’s a firm believer that everyone should have an opportunity to do so. Serving as chair requires a bigger time commitment, McPhail said, in the form of more meetings, agenda planning, and attendance at community functions that the board is invited to. Her freed up time will allow her to volunteer at some of her other passions, including the Richmond Hospital Auxiliary. As well, her daughter has started up a business in Steveston and she’d like to assist there as well. Sargent said she’s served as the vice chair for a number of years and is ready and looking forward to stepping up. “I’m excited to take on the role...and give what I can,” she said, adding that her style is similar to McPhail’s in that she likes to share the work as much as possible.

Importing threatened orchid nets firm $100,000 fine by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter A nearly two-year investigation into a Richmond importexport firm has resulted in the largest-ever fine under legislation dealing with threatened animal and plant species. Sun 2006 Import and Export Ltd. was fined $100,000 in Vancouver provincial court after it pled guilty to a single count un-

der the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act. Environment Canada wildlife officer Marko Goluza said some 110 kilograms of a threatened orchid species was discovered in a 40-foot sea container at the Port of Vancouver in June of 2008. But it wasn’t until May of this year that 18 charges were laid,

and Sun 2006 only pled guilty to a single count. While selling the orchid isn’t illegal, as long as the proper permits are obtained which demonstrate that the orchid is obtained from a sustainable source, this orchid was imported from China without the proper permit. The orchid stems seized had an over-the-counter retail value of about $200,000.

Up until last year, Sun 2006 had an address on No. 3 Road, north of Alderbridge Way. Goluza said the investigation led to the seizure of many documents in Richmond. The denobrium species of orchids are thought to be helpful in the treatment of general debility, flatulence, night sweats, fever, anorexia and reduced salivation, according to one ethnobotanical paper written

by a university in India. Other species or animal derivatives seized during the investigation were: tree fern, African elephant, monkey, bear and crocodile. A substantial part of the fine will go to the Government of Canada for the purpose of refining genomic research to improve methods of identifying endangered species that will deter their illegal trade.

The denobrium species of orchids are highly-sought after.

$550k indoor climbing wall would be highest in province by Christine Lyon Staff Reporter The Richmond Olympic Oval Corporation hopes to move a few items to the top of its “to do” list, including construction of a halfmillion-dollar indoor climbing wall, while delaying other projects, such as a children’s play area, as the oval converts to post-Games mode. A proposed $550,000 climbing wall is hoped to attract people who wouldn’t normally use the facility. Originally projected at $250,000 when the oval corporation outlined its conversion plan to council in November 2009, the wall expanded in scope after market research. At council’s general purposes committee meeting on Monday, Couns. Bill McNulty and Ken Johnston expressed concern at the climbing wall’s estimated $49,000 annual return. The investment “doesn’t seem that prudent,” said Johnston. John Mills, general manager of the oval, said research suggests interest in extreme sports is high. “The climbing wall will be used, will be rented, will be the highest indoor climbing wall in British Columbia, is a huge selling factor in terms of our membership,” he told council. The oval corporation also wants to prioritize the “Richmond Olympic Story,” a $575,000 undertaking that would see Gamesrelated memorabilia and pictures

displayed throughout the building. The project was estimated at $150,000 in November 2009. “Is this our wall of fame?” McNulty asked. “It could be,” Mills replied, adding “We get lots of visitors who simply want to reconnect with those 17 (Olympic) days. “I think there is something to be capitalized on from a tourism perspective.” Other items recommended for “immediate action” include buck-

“The items that are on hold are on hold only so that we can complete our due diligence and ensure we do it right.” - George Duncan et-style event seats, LED display boards, legacy suite upgrades, chairs for theatre-style configuration, two more team rooms, sport surface coverings and parking infrastructure. All would be funded from the surplus of the building base and legacy conversion budgets. Meanwhile, projects the oval corporation is proposing to put on the back burner are a children’s play space that increases physical activity, batting cages and executive locker rooms. “The items that are on hold are on hold only so that we can complete

our due diligence and ensure we do it right,” said oval CEO George Duncan, who is also the city’s chief administrative officer. “It is our intention to do these items. The specialized play space for children is going to happen, we just haven’t figured out the best place to make it happen,” he said. Some of the projects that lack the demand or revenue originally expected include a licensed daycare, portable squash courts and artificial turf. They are no longer recommended. According to a staff report by project development director Greg Scott, the conversion to community legacy is 85 per cent complete. McNulty inquired about the oval’s appeal to seniors. “We’re drawing high-performance athletes, but are we drawing the citizens of Richmond, in particular seniors?” he asked. Mills said seniors do use the facility, particularly the track. Of the oval’s 2,600 members, Mills said 83 per cent are from Richmond. Council asked for more information on some of the prioritized and on-hold projects before the newly adjusted plans go to a regular council vote next week. Meanwhile, the oval corporation is still in the red, having posted a $294,700 third quarter loss—more than the budgeted $61,200 loss. From July to September’s end, revenues were $1.54 million—$203,500 less than expected.

Richmond firm wins U.S. market approval by Martin van den Hemel Staff Reporter Richmond-based bioLytical Laboratories, the developer of the one-minute HIV test, has received approval to market and sell its product in the lucrative American market. “We are ecstatic,” said bioLytical CEO Robert Mackie. “It’s been a long haul.” The company’s INSTI rapid HIV antibody test is the first to receive U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for point-of-care use in nearly five years. The U.S. market was worth $88 million last year, translating into millions of tests. Unlike other tests which can take 15 to 30 minutes. bioLytical’s product produces results in less than 60 seconds. It’s good news for the 400 shareholders of the private company, 90 per cent of whom are from B.C. Some $27 million has been spent on research and development and another $17 million in commercialization, he said. The test will sell for between $8 and $12 in doc-

tors’ offices and health clinics, but a bulk version of the test was sold to the government in Zimbabwe for about $2.20. The knowledge that bioLytical is making a difference in the lives of millions of people across the globe is “very rewarding,” Mackie said. “It’s not about the money right now.” The Richmond Review featured bioLytical in November of 2005 after it had earlier received approval from Health Canada. The test uses a small blood drop sample from the subject to test for the presence of antibodies to HIV in whole blood, serum or plasma. The science behind the test is a closely-guarded secret, but involves a process called immuno chromotography. The test is similar in appearance to a pregnancy test. The INSTI test went commercial in 2006, and remains the only such test approved by Health Canada. Nearly two million tests have been conducted worldwide, and it is a big part of the $48 million, cutting-edge Seek and Treat pilot program announced in B.C. earlier this year.

Animal shelter Nelson Road fix seeks help for Milo now Friday The Richmond Animal Protection Society is hoping the public will once again assist after generous support helped provide surgery for Milo, a mastiff-shepherd dog that was hit by a car last July. Milo was left for dead on Highway 99 in mid July after being struck by a vehicle. The collision shattered the dog’s femur, but after public donations poured in, a complex surgery was performed to repair the compound fracture. Milo is now scheduled to undergo rehabilitative hydrotherapy, and the society is looking for financial support for the final stages of his recovery. Once he’s fully recovered, he will be up for adoption from the Richmond Animal Shelter. Donations can be made online at rapsociety.com or at 604-2752036.

Around-the-clock repairs on a broken sewer pipe on Nelson Road should be completed in time for Friday morning’s rush hour commute. City spokesperson Kim Decker said last week’s extraordinary break on a relatively new line on Nelson Road, south of Westminster Highway, means the road is currently open to a single lane of traffic. Custom-made parts needed to be fabricated, and that is what’s lengthened the repair time, Decker said. The road was originally slated to re-open Tuesday. The repairs will necessitate the complete closure of Nelson from 5 p.m. Wednesday to 6:30 a.m. Thursday, and from 5 p.m. Thursday until 6:30 a.m. Friday. The cause of the sewer break has still not been determined.

opinion B.C. politics a bloodsport

P

olitics in B.C. has always been a takeno-prisoners bloodsport. For proof, one need look no further than the bookend resignations of Gordon Campbell and Carole James.

Neither wanted to give up their posts as Liberal and NDP leaders; both were almost forced out by a small band of dissidents and provincial polling that suggested they had outstayed their welcome. No one said the job of party leader would be easy but it’s particularly tough in B.C., where politics are polarized and elections are fought like mixed martial arts battles. Leaders need the confidence of their entire caucus, not 84 per cent, which is roughly what both James and Campbell had toward the end of their tenures. Without popular support inside and outside the party, they were lame ducks. The two deserve credit for showing leadership where it was needed by stepping down early enough in the election cycle for the two parties to rebuild, and the province benefited from both their strengths. Campbell was innovative and made some great leaps forward in acknowledging climate change and the steps needed to reverse it; James was collaborative and willing to reach out to sectors not usually friends of NDP, such as small business. But both faced challenges from insiders who felt a new brand was necessary for the parties to revive before the May 2013 election. James was criticized for being dull, unimaginative and slow to take advantage of Liberal gaffes; Campbell was denounced as out of touch and dictatorial. In the end, both leaders faced the impossible task of trying to win over critics and reunite their parties. In the final analysis, some may say Carole James was as much a victim of the harmonized sales tax decision as Gordon Campbell. James failed to gain mileage from this much-hated public policy compared to Bill Vander Zalm, who managed to revive his reputation. While he fed the media a daily diet of blistering attacks against the HST, James offered a less exciting but possibly more realistic option to renegotiate the deal. Now, B.C. voters will finally have their say on the HST and a new political era. But don’t expect politics in Lotusland to get any less nasty. — The Tri-City News (Black Press)

B.C. Views Tom Fletcher

I

n their classic movie Life of Brian, the British comedy troupe Monty Python spoofs a crumbling Roman Empire and its disorganized enemies. Among those foes is the People’s Front for Judea, determined to bring the empire down and free its victims. Alas, it finds itself locked in a bitter rivalry with a splinter group calling itself the Judean People’s Front. The huddling, oppressed Judeans themselves aren’t much helped by their constant, pointless in-fighting. The resemblance to today’s B.C. political scene is striking. Emperor Gordon the Green is marking his final days. Plotters in his own Senate have sheathed their knives only now that he has agreed to speed his chariot to the exit. His taxes have so enraged the peasantry, there are fears that only his Convention

Coliseum and Great Road to Whistler will be left to mark his reign. And what does the opposition do, even as the torches and pitchforks of a people’s militia clear a broad path to the throne? It finds itself locked in a bitter dispute with a 13-member splinter group—perhaps they should call themselves the Newer Democratic Party. The rebels got their wish Monday, as Carole James resigned as leader. The question is, now what? The Baker’s Dozen, a default label for these rebels, were united by one notion. James must make way for a leadership contest against no declared rival, as soon as possible, because she has no compelling ideas. I’ve been trying to point this out for years. “Innovative ideas are what the NDP needs now,” this column declared in December 2006, when the first rumblings about James’ leadership were surfacing. At that point, the NDP’s health-care focus was exploiting the grief of seniors forced into separate care homes by their divergent medical needs. Two years later, the NDP would denounce B.C.’s innovative carbon tax. This was not driven by any substantive logic, a fact that was demonstrated when

they dropped their objections after the 2009 election. The common thread with the separated seniors and the carbon tax is that these were merely tactics. See something unpopular and oppose it. The same empty tactics have guided the NDP through the drama over the harmonized sales tax. They still haven’t said clearly what they would do with it.

Opposed it, claiming all we can do is sell low-grade lumber at a loss. What’s the NDP’s latest wood product idea? Our Province Our Future has a discussion paper that ends with a series of important questions, such as “What can be done to generate a shift toward high valueadded production?” There are lots of questions, but I didn’t find any answers.

I spent some time this weekend on the NDP’s policy development website. Did you know that this major initiative was launched this past spring? Didn’t think so. Events have moved faster than their ability to formulate even the beginnings of an actual plan. I spent some time this weekend on the NDP’s policy development website, called Our Province Our Future. Did you know that this major initiative was launched this past spring? Didn’t think so. There are impressive studies about topics like the volatility of commodity markets. B.C. has started making serious inroads into the Chinese lumber market, driven by aggressive government promotion programs. What has the NDP done?

The Baker’s Dozen split with James began with the expulsion of Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson. His crime was to say that seven years into her leadership, James offers few ideas. Gordon Campbell’s problem was having too many ideas. His record for cabinet reorganizations alone should stand for all time. The NDP still looks like a front group for public-sector unions and not much else. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. letters Carole James will be ‘sorely missed’ Editor: It is very unfortunate that during the past few weeks NDP leader Carole James’ leadership has come under question. To her credit, in view of these developments she has done the honourable thing by resigning. Since taking over the leadership of the NDP in 2003, James has done an amazing job in rebuilding the party. She picked up where Joy MacPhail and Jenny Kwan had left off. For the past seven years, Carole James has put in countless hours in reaching out to every part and segment of B.C. In this process she has visited nearly every community—

some of them many times over—in building support for the party. Over the years, she has proven herself to be a very hard working, dedicated and tireless leader. As a longtime member of the NDP and its provincial council, this writer has seen Carole James grow on the job into a very caring, inclusive, selfless and compassionate leader. She has done a marvelous job in bringing a nearly decimated party from two seats to 35 in the provincial legislature. Thank you Carole. You will be sorely missed. Balwant Sanghera Richmond

arts & entertainment Richmond kids join cast of orphans Message of hope shines through in Depression-era musical at Gateway Theatre by Christine Lyon Staff Reporter

t’s the hard-knock life for the girls in Miss Hannigan’s orphanage. The children subsist on a diet of cold mush, sleep head-to-toe in tiny plywood beds, wake up at 4 a.m. to clean, and are allowed outside just once a month. Fortunately, once rehearsal is over, the young actors who play the orphans can go home, sleep on comfy mattresses, and needn’t drop everything at the sound of a whistle. Five Richmond elementary and high school students are among the dozen orphans in Gateway Theatre’s production of Annie, which runs Dec. 9 to 31. In celebration of its 26th anniversary, the theatre is staging the first musical it produced in 1984. Directed by Johnna Wright, the classic story centres on little orphan Annie, whose life is turned around thanks to the gruff but warm-hearted billionaire Oliver Warbucks. The original Broadway production opened in 1977. In scene one, the audience is taken inside a rundown factory converted into a girls’ orphanage on New York’s Lower East Side. It’s December, 1933—the height of the Great Depression. The resident orphans have long been terrorized by tyrannical orphanage matron Miss Hannigan, a spinster with a drinking problem, famously portrayed by Carol Burnett in the 1982 film adaptation. The girls are led by alpha orphan, Annie, a spunky optimist with a mop of curly red hair played by 11-year-old Michelle Creber. Creber stars alongside her real life family dog, Max, who plays her canine companion Sandy. Eleven-year-old Colette Richardson, a student at A.B. Dixon Elementary, landed the role of fellow orphan Pepper. She and the others are united in their hatred for the nasty Miss Hannigan, played by Nora McLellan. “She’s always drinking, she’s always ranting and we’re always making fun of her and sticking signs on her back,” said Richardson. “Sometimes we get along with each other and sometimes we don’t,” she added. While the characters may bicker—and who wouldn’t get a little cranky eating cold mush day in and day out—the young actors get along famously. “The first day we got here, we were best friends. We had this little talking circle, and we gossip and we hang,” said Richardson. “Then we go on (stage) and we’re playing friends too.” Acting in a large-scale musical isn’t all fun and games. The complicated tap dance routines were a challenge for the girls to master, but they picked

Annie the musical • Book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, at Gateway Theatre until Dec. 31 •Starring Michelle Creber, Timothy E. Brummund, Nora McLellan, Matt Palmer, Barbara Tomasic, Pippa Mackie; directed by Johnna Wright •Tickets $27.50 to $43, at gatewaytheatre.com or 604-270-1812 up the steps eventually thanks to choreographer Kennith Overbey’s guidance. Most have taken singing, dancing or acting classes at Gateway Academy for the Performing Arts. Blundell Elementary student Maria Go, 11, has an added challenge as one of three Richmond actors who dances with her feet mounted inside

heavy metal buckets. And thanks to her onstage acrobatic talents, Jessie Chan, 9, of Maple Lane Elementary has been dubbed “The Pretzel” by her young cast mates. The cast and crew have been rehearsing for several weeks in a vacant retail space at Lansdowne Centre. Rows of wood-framed orphan beds sit on either side of the former furniture store and the floor is carefully sectioned off with green, blue, yellow and red tape. The floor plan is a scaled-down version of Gateway’s main stage. The different tape colours represent New York, the Warbucks mansion and the orphanage. The girls look forward to entering the stage on a revolve—a giant turntable divided into pie-like segments with parts of the set on each section. While the actors lead lives of luxury compared to their orphan counterparts, the girls have made

an effort to understand their characters. “My character (Pepper) is a pretty strong personality,” said Richardson. “It’s easier to find your character if you read through the lines and think of the intention, the past and the present and the future, and you start to realize why your character would say certain things or why they’ll do certain things,” she said. Ten-year-old Makena Zimmerman of Quilchena Elementary has had to tone down her outspoken personality to play the quiet but mischievous Kate. Despite the bleak setting, Annie is anything but depressing. The orphans’ resilience and optimism in the face of hardship delivers a message of hope. “It’s like one of those hard candies that when you bite them they’re all sweet in the centre,” said 14-year-old R.A. McMath secondary student Murielle Faifman. “It’s really optimistic and it really brings your spirit up.”

Novel offers look into the heartbreak of Alzheimer’s

till Alice by Lisa Genova is the fictional story of Alice Howland, a 50-year-old psychology professor at Harvard University who is diagnosed with early

onset Alzheimer’s. Genova leads us through the rapid progress of Alice’s decline from a medical as well as an emotional perspective, ultimately showing us the indisputable importance of love. Calling it “molecular mayhem,” Genova

describes how Alzheimer’s disease ravages Alice’s life by the teaspoonful, and wreaks havoc on her family and professional relationships. Alice’s quick and steady cognitive decline is documented each step of the way and Genova’s handling of this sensitive subject

How it steals away almost every part of the sufferer’s life is sometimes too much to bear. is true and gentle. Fiercely protecting her main protagonist, Genova chronicles Alice’s losses with as much dignity as possible.

We’re introduced to Alice’s family early on—her daughters Anna and Lydia; her son Tom; and her husband John. Each

one is at a different stage of acceptance (or denial) about the disease and their consequent relationships with Alice mirror this. The heartbreaks in this story come early and often and the tears rolled down my cheeks as I read the ending. See Page 16

So many of us know someone with Alzheimer’s disease, and the intimate details of how it steals away almost every part of the sufferer’s life is sometimes too much to bear. In Still Alice, the author makes sure we don’t lose sight of the fact that Alzheimer’s victims are still people, with rights and privileges, just like the healthy. Near the end of the novel, when Alice is giving a speech at the Dementia Care Conference about her personal experiences with Alzheimer’s, is where we get the central message of the book. She says: “This is now who I am, someone with dementia… But I am not what I say or what I do or what I remember. I am fundamentally more than that. I am a wife, mother and friend… I still feel, understand, and am

and my arms for hugging others with dementia. I am not someone dying. I am someone living with Alzheimer’s.” First-time novelist Genova comes to this story with a solid background in the subject. She has a PhD in neuroscience from Harvard University and writes for the National Alzheimer’s Association. While the book jacket says she lives in Massachusetts, somehow I think she really lives inside Alice’s head. This is an amazing and very emotionally moving book, so if you decide to read it, bring Kleenex. Lots of Kleenex. Singer shines spotlight on Richmond Christmas Fund for local families in need by Christine Lyon Staff Reporter Local children’s entertainer Charlotte Diamond has been performing at Lansdowne Centre for years, but this weekend’s concert is particularly special. The singer will go on stage Saturday, Dec. 11 at 4 p.m. to draw attention to the Richmond Christmas Fund and the mall’s fundraising efforts. “It’s a celebration of children, it’s a celebration of families, and how often do we get a chance just to come out and sing? Diamond said. “People get to come and see and concert and meet their friends and have a good time, but also do something very, very good for the community. Parents are encouraged to drop off new, unwrapped toys which the Christmas fund will

The concert marks the end of Lansdowne’s Cirque, Cirque, Circus contest. Shoppers can buy a $4 chocolate bar from customer service until Dec. 11, proceeds of which go to the fund. Located behind the hotel and suspended above the Fraser River in the heart of the marina, the restaurant boasted floor to ceiling windows and a magnificent view of the mountains and river. Again, I’m pleased to report change. Sporting a new name: Pier 73 (in honour of the old days when Place at the Pier had the best buffet in the city), the restaurant’s English pub ambiance is gone. The beautiful wood bar is still a focal point, but everything is brighter, lighter, and more welcoming as a destination for lunch meetings, relaxed dinner gatherings, or evening drinks with friends. Light up the lanes: the Vancouver Heritage Foundation hosts the first-ever Laneway House Tour Saturday The Vancouver Heritage Foundation is hosting its first-ever Laneway House Tour this weekend, and if ticket sales are any indication, it’s already a success. “We’ve pretty much sold out. I think there might be 20 tickets left,” VHF executive director Diane Switzer said Monday. “For many people, this will be their first look inside a laneway house. Laneway housing was only approved a short time ago (in Vancouver), so now we’re seeing the first batch of laneway homes out of the 100

Cintas pitches in to help Black Press donate the 1,500 coats the company collected at its Metro Vancouver offices for the GVHBA’s Coats for Kids campaign. ’Tis the season: giving is in TRICIA LESLIE Once again, the local community has proven it is comprised of generous, giving people. They donated thousands of coats and warm articles of clothing – including some brandnew purchases and handmade items – to the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association’s 15th annual Coats for Kids campaign. All donations will go to the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau and other charitable organizations, which will ensure the coats and clothes are given to those who need it most. Black Press community newspapers offered most of its Metro Vancouver newspaper offices

as drop-off sites for the GVHBA initiative and amazingly, brought in 1,500 coats for the cause. “Coats for Kids was embraced with overwhelming enthusiasm by our staff and by our readers,” says Black Press senior vice-president of sales and marketing Candy Hodson. “It is so heartwarming to see the profound impact we can have in supporting charities at this time of year.” At Cintas – ‘the uniform people’ – that sentiment was echoed by general manager Henk Colyn, who provided a Cintas truck to transport the mountains of clothing Black Press collected. “Our strong community awareness has

always been driven first and foremost by our partners from the community,” he says. “But it is through efforts and partnerships, such as with New Local Home and Black Press and Coats for Kids that our partners can really see what the combined efforts of many can do.” GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson says this will likely be a record-breaking year, with more than 3,000 coats collected; the final tally is still being counted. “Every year, the public responds very generously. They open their closets and their hearts,” Simpson says. “We’re very pleased to see the support and the generosity. What a great response.”

building permits that have been approved.” Six houses are on the tour, ranging from traditional to modern in all different sizes, Switzer says, and notes that only laneway houses that have been constructed behind existing houses are on the tour. Part of the VHF’s mandate is to keep city streetscapes as unchanged as possible, but because laneway houses are behind the main home, on the lane, they can help add residents without changes to the streetscape, Switzer says. While laneway homes can range from 200-250 square feet to nearly 1,000 sq. ft. – depending on the size of the existing lot – the homes on tour range from about 500 to 750 sq. ft., she says, in one- and two-bedroom designs. “I think people are interested to know what it would be like to live in (a laneway home), or people who already live in small spaces can come and get ideas for their own interior design,” Switzer says. “This might be something some homeowners want to do in their own backyard, whether for renters or for a family member.” The tour happens at select homes in Vancouver on Saturday, Dec. 11 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $50 ($25 tax receipts issued upon request). Project teams will be on-site to discuss each home and there will be Christmas light displays, hot chocolate and cookies. Visit www.vancouverheritagefoundation. org for details – and to find out if there are any tickets left.

Chef Morgan says he knows the changes are a good thing. He’s one of 25 chefs at the hotel—

with conference and catering a large part of the hospitality service—who want to see the restaurant come alive with the fervour of the past. This father of two young ones looks too young to be an executive chef, but tells me he was six years old when he knew he wanted to be a chef. At 14, he cooked at a Greek restaurant and a burger shop. His culinary journey took him to Banff’s Rimrock Resort Hotel and the Banff Springs Hotel, the Empress in Victoria, and Kettle of Fish in Vancouver before joining Delta. Richmond Christmas Fund reaches out to community Friday Organizers of the Richmond Christmas Fund are asking the community to help make children’s holiday wishes come true Friday, Dec. 10 by raising funds and awareness. The Richmond Christmas Fund mobilizes the community’s spirit of giving to

help 2,000 low-income families in Richmond each year. Each person registered with the program receives a $25 grocery voucher and nearly 1,000 children (under 15) also receive toys or gift cards donated to the program. “We are particularly in need of gifts

for girls 10-12 as well as books, crafts and games for all ages. Cash donations provide gift cards for teens 13-15 and grocery vouchers to allow each family to enjoy a special holiday meal this season,” said Elizabeth Specht, executive director of Volunteer Richmond Information Ser-

vices, which organizes the fund. “If each Richmond resident, family, or business gives as little as $10 to the Christmas Fund on December 10th, we can make the holiday season a whole lot brighter.” Donations can be made at volunteerrichmond.ca or at 604-279-7020. Judo legend Inoue visits Steveston Judo Club by Don Fennell Sports Editor With four Olympic titles and nine all-Japan championships during his decorated competitive career, which included 203 consecutive victories, Yasuhiro Yamashita is a hero to many judoka—including Kosei Inoue. But the latter is quickly gaining a similar status on the global stage. A modern-day legend who, at age 32, has already won an Olympic title and been world and all-Japan champion three times each, Inoue spent a week in Richmond recently at the invitation of Steveston Judo Club vice-president Jim Kojima. During his visit, he conducted several clinics for both instructors and students and was pleased to see “good technique.” “I hope my teaching really becomes useful to the students in their future judo,”

said Inoue, whose judo teachings began when he was five years old. He particularly delighted in showing his favourite throwing technique “Uchi mata” which was developed by Jigaro Kano, known world-wide as the founder of judo. Inoue’s father, who introduced him to the martial art, successfully used the Uchi mata technique to defeat much bigger opponents than his own 80 kilograms. Though much bigger than his father, Inoue, who now weighs about 100 kilograms, has employed it with even greater success. After several attempts, he was able to defeat Shinichi Shinohara (also a world and Olympic champion) for the all-Japan championship which he still considers one of the greatest victories of his career. Initially, Inoue simply participated in judo for fun. But as his interest grew, so did his

desire for competition. Ultimately, his passion for judo has grown into a lifetime commitment and a desire to practise and share the principles of the martial art. “Judo has very educational

values and I’ve learned a lot such as improving, of course, my physical condition and philosophy to create friendships between myself and my opponent,” he said. “Judo can teach you what you need

to survive. I want students to focus on improving their technique and their physical and mental condition. Judo (demands that you) improve as a person. I believe judo can help achieve peace through-

out the world.” Inoue points to Yamashita now a professor at Tokai University (from which Inoue graduated) as an example of such an individual. “He not only has strong and good technique, but he’s a fantastic human being,” Inoue said. Inoue, who won his first world championship at 21, said he appreciated the opportunity to visit the Steveston Judo Club on his way home from London, England where he spent the past yearand-a-half studying English. He recently conducted a clinic in Montreal which drew 800 participants over two days. Already a member of Japan’s coaching staff which is preparing judoka for the 2012 Olympic Summer Games, Inoue is set to become a sensei and, in the next year or two, the chief instructor at Tokai University.

No. 2 Griffins beat No. 1 Rebels in Classic The No. 2-ranked team in the B.C. AAA high school basketball should be number one after the R.C. Palmer Griffins held on for an 81-79 victory over No. 1-ranked Burnaby South Rebels at the

Michael Keenlyside Classic senior high school boys’ tournament last weekend at Point Grey Secondary. The Griffins, winners of the tournament and now 4-0 to start the season,

tipped off with a 121-37 win over the Sentinel Spartans. Palmer’s offence was on display early and often against the Spartans with several Griffins scoring in double digits. Every Palmer play-

er got on the scoresheet, with Grade 11 Ben Samy selected as the player of the game. In the semifinals, Palmer outscored the host Greyhounds 96-74. Palmer had an early 10-point

lead but the host team hung tough and did not allow Palmer to increase the lead and the half-time score was 52-42. Ranjodh Hare was the player of the game scoring 16 points and

grabbing 14 rebounds, while Vijay Dhillon had 27 points including four three-pointers. Mike Zayas also had a solid game with 19 points and Billy Cheng dished out five assists.

This set up the final between the Griffins and Rebels that was a close, intense affair from start to finish. Burnaby South came out on fire, shooting the ball extremely well from the three-point line, and led 28-20 after a quarter. Palmer played much better defence in the second quarter, holding the Rebels to only 10 points to pull within two points (38-36) at the half. The third quarter was also tight, within the Griffins enjoying a slight edge to tie the game at 58-58. The fourth quarter saw several lead changes between the teams as Palmer’s Dhillon and Manroop Claire of the Rebels matched each other shot for shot. The Griffins were ahead 78-76 with one minute to go when Claire hit a three to give the Rebels a one-point lead. However, Dhillon responded with a pull-up three of his own with 40 seconds left to restore Palmer’s twopoint edge. The Rebels missed their next shot and had a couple more chances with offensive rebounds but came up empty. Zayas had a monster game for the Griffins, breaking the school record with 18 defensive rebounds (plus two offensive rebounds for a total of 20 rebounds). He also chipped in with 17 points. Jamie Madewan and Hare also had doubledoubles, as Madewan had 15 points and 13 rebounds and Hare had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Hare went down with a serious ankle sprain at the beginning of the fourth quarter, but after getting a tape job he showed great determination to finish the game. “Ranjodh is quite simply one of the hardest working and toughest players I have ever coached,” said coach Paul Eberhardt. Dhillon, who had to play the point guard spot in Cheng’s absence (Cheng played the first tournament game but was unavailable for the final) scored 34 points including five three-pointers. He was seven-for-seven on free throws. •Palmer won its seasonopener 64-59 at Mouat last Monday. The Griffins are playing in the annual HSBC Classic tournament this week.

Sharks show bite at Marlin Classic First tournament win for senior boys The Steveston-London senior boys’ basketball team netted its first tournament victory in school history Saturday. The Sharks outscored its opposition 226-161 at the Marlin Classic on the weekend, opening with a 78-54 final-game victory over the John Oliver Jokers on Friday. Steveston-London controlled the game from the tip off. The Sharks, with their up-tempo style, led 28-8 after the opening quarter. A tougher test followed, as the Sharks held off an ath-

letic Moscrop Panthers, which previously upset tournament host McNair by a point. The Sharks’ run-and-gun and aggressive defence pushed them to a 65-38 victory. The Port Moody Blues gave the Sharks their toughest test of the tournament Saturday. The first half was a back-andforth exercise, but the Sharks were able to take a 10-point lead into the break and in the fourth quarter were able to finally pull away for an 8369 win. The Sharks were also able to get their hands on some

personal hardware. Kevin Zhang was named to the allstar team, averaging 24 points a game and 10.6 rebounds a game. Starting point guard Kingston Chung was named the tournament MVP. “We played our game and everyone got into every game, which is great teaching for these kids,” Steveston-London coach Mike Stoneburgh said. The Sharks are at the Guildford Park invitational tournament Dec. 9 to 11, and host league rival McMath Wildcats Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

Colts split home openers, winning at Guildford Park The Richmond Colts survived the pre-game jitters to win their senior high school boys’ season opener 69-60 at Guildford Park last week. “This was (Guildford) their home opener and they were pretty excited to play,” Richmond coach Les Brown said. “Unfortunately for them, our guys were also ready to play.” The Colts came out of the gates hot, led by Grade 11 Leslie Tsang who helped Richmond gain a 19-2 lead midway through the first quarter. They were up 29-10 going into the second frame and continued to build on that, though Guildford played hard and were able to close the gap to within three points in the fourth quarter. However, the Colts couldn’t duplicate the feat against a strong Matheson team from Surrey in their own home opener Dec. 1, which they lost by 18 points to a team superior in height. Matheson has two players who are six foot six, while the Colts’ tallest player is

six foot three. Still, there was a great atmosphere in the new Corral with 375 screaming fans and DJ January spinning tunes during timeouts. “Our guys fought hard, and going into the fourth quarter we were only down five points,” noted Brown. “But foul trouble and a lack of depth really affected how we played. We currently have two players out with injuries, so our bench is really short. But our fans stayed with us and cheered right till the end.” Richmond plays its league opener at H.J. Cambie Secondary tonight at 7:30 p.m., and next Monday (Dec. 13) will play at Richmond Christian before going to Abbotsford the following night for a game at Rick Hansen Secondary. Then, it’s off to San Diego for the Colts’ annual training and exhibition tour. They have games lined up against Mission Bay Secondary and Point Loma High School. “Those should be a pretty good learning experiences for our young team,” Brown said.

> Richmond Sunset Rotary Club’s 10th annual Winter Wonderland

An afternoon of entertainment in Winter Wonderland

Around Town Amanda Oye

T

Kenn and Keith Ng, who is a student at the Richmond Music School.

he halls are decked and the Christmas spirit is alive at Richmond City Hall, home of Richmond Sunset Rotary’s 10th annual Winter Wonderland where students from the Peggy Yip Piano Studio and the Richmond Music School performed last Saturday afternoon. Dozens of families came out to watch the show and browse through the Wonderland decorations. The turnout wasn’t quite what the rotary club hoped it would be though. “We expected more people,” said Grace Tsang,

who helps organize the Winter Wonderland concerts. “Usually it is just family and friends [of the performers],” she said. Despite the concert’s small crowd, Winter Wonderland has already reached its target of $50,000 in donations, including $1,500 sponsorships for each of the 30 Christmas trees on display, according to Magdalen Leung, event chair. The money will go to a number of projects that the rotary club supports including the Richmond Christmas Fund. They are still working to collect more money for the Rotary International “End Polio Now” campaign though, Leung said. The next entertainment at Winter Wonderland is Saturday at 1 p.m. Admission is free, but food bank donations are strongly encouraged. Amanda Oye covers the social scene for The Richmond Review. Atheists plan new transit ad offensive

F== >I<8K ;<8CJ I@>?K N?<I< PFL C@M<

www.bcdailydeals.com

by Jeff Nagel Black Press A wave of atheist advertising intended to provoke skepticism about the existence of God could soon be coming to TransLink buses and SkyTrains. Centre for Inquiry Canada executive director Justin Trottier says the organization plans to bring two ad campaigns to Metro Vancouver in the new year. One could be a re-run of transit ads placed in other cities that advised: "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life." The organization also aims to launch a second set of ads that lump together Christ, Allah, Zeus, psychics, UFOs and Bigfoot under the slogan "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence." Trottier said they're not mocking people of faith or attacking religious belief, but want to promote

awareness of non-believers and their right to free speech. Atheists and skeptics need to be heard, he said, in important debates on whether Canada is a Christian country as well as ethical issues like religious accommodation, stem cell research and access to abortion. "We are a critical-thinking pro-science skeptical organization," he said, adding the group also wants to shine a dubious light on alternative medicine, including homeopathy and acupuncture. The centre's website, extraordinary-claims.com, includes critiques of dozens of beliefs, therapies and phenomena, including Ogopogo, vampires, ghosts, Ouija boards, karma, Feng Shui, astrology, auras and reiki. Trottier rejects criticisms the group stands for nothing. "We believe in evidence," he said.
