A letter from the

Dear Neighbor,

Welcome to our annual Living In The Five Towns, a special supplement to the Nassau Herald.

Those of us who live here know that Hewlett, Woodmere, Cedarhurst, Lawrence, and Inwood, along with Atlantic Beach, are vibrant and diverse communities. All are brimming with history and unique “hidden gems,” which are an integral part of what makes these towns such wonderful places to live, work, shop and play. From a magical stairway to a prolific author, come discover these hidden gems!

Think of Living In The Five Towns as an “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here. With a mix of suburban charm and proximity to urban amenities, these neighborhoods are quintessential communities to raise a family or run a business.

Several associations also play pivotal roles in the Five Towns. The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association, the Cedarhurst Business Improvement District, the Lawrence Association, and the Inwood Civic Association all actively promote businesses and community development. They foster collaboration among local entrepreneurs, coordinate events that engage residents and work to maintain the unique character of each neighborhood while promoting economic growth.

We hope that you find this edition of Living In the Five Towns useful and informative and that you enjoy reading the Nassau Herald throughout the year.

P.S. If you're not currently receiving the Nassau Herald by mail each week, subscribe today so you don't miss out on the hyperlocal news that matters to you and your family most! A MessAge froM the hewlett-woodMere Business AssociAtion

Dear Residents:

The Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association was formed to bring together merchants and professionals conducting business in the hamlets of Hewlett and Woodmere — including North Woodmere — served by School District 14.

Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association members support programs throughout the school district, local organizations and civic associations. We aim to foster awareness from adjoining communities as to our merchandise, activities and services offered in the two villages. The business association gives our members daily social media advertising posts. We do ribbon-cuttings for new businesses.

We enjoy the support of Town Council member Melissa Miller; Nassau County Legislature President Howard Kopel; County Executive Bruce Blakeman; Town Supervisor

Donald Clavin; and State Sen. Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick and Assemblyman Eric "Ari" Brown. These public officials and our residents are the ones who look to an active business association to make our community a more attractive place to reside.

The business association is an integral part of the community. We hold Christmas and Hanukkah celebrations and other community events at our Veterans Memorial Plaza. We organize the Memorial Day Parade and sponsor Kids Night Out, as well as other activities.

Our award-winning school district, excellent library and shopping areas are what help unite us as a vibrant community. We invite you to eat in our local restaurants, shop our boutiques and use our service businesses to help us remain a strong business hub.

Warm regards,

Five Towns Royalty

With family roots in the Five Towns that started in 1948, David A. Adler has resided there almost his entire life.

Everyone has a story,' Adler said. 'Allow yourself to be critical of your work, and take criticism.

A 1964 Lawrence High School graduate, Adler lived with his family in Cedarhurst after they moved from Brooklyn.

Adler, who earned an MBA in Marketing from NYU, began his professional life as a math teacher in the New York City school system. He taught for nine years, and then decided he wanted more.

His passion for the written word grew out of a love of writ-

ing reports as a student. Creative writing was where he fully excelled. He sent over his first effort to Random House,“A Little at a Time,” a story about a man who takes his grandson to a museum and answers the boy’s quest for knowledge, question by question. He received a call six months later.

That call changed his life. "A LIttle at a Time" was published in 1976; Adler went on to have an esteemed writing career, with 282 books under his credit, including the Cam Jansen Mysteries. That series has over 30 million copies printed.

“For me writing is a process, I begin with a story idea, the main characters and setting,” Adler said.“I struggle most with the voice and how I will tell the story. For me writing involves constant revisions. It’s so much easier, I think, not to try and get the story just right in the first draft, to leave it for the second, third, and fourth drafts. My best stories have been rewritten many, many times before I send them to my editors.”

Adler has received numerous awards over the years, including the 2016 Seuss Medal for “Don’t Throw It To Mo,” the 2017 Regina Medal, and California Young Reader Medal for “The Babe and I,” among many others.

He has a message for young aspiring writers who might not know where to start and feel discouraged.

“Young writers, even old writers, should be willing to take

suggestions from other people to do a lot of rewriting, and to read like a writer, not a reader."

When it comes to having a greatest accomplishment, Adler doesn’t have a specific one. But, the Cam Jansen Mysteries, which began in 1980, will always have a special place in his heart.

He prides himself on creating an innovative series that was strictly plot, characters and story so that children would not be discouraged and have transitions in reading.

“Everyone has a story,” Adler said.“Allow yourself to be critical of your work, and take criticism.”

Dental floss and camaraderie are two things you’ll find at the Art Studio of the Five Towns, thanks to Brocha Teichman.

The creative space, at 48 Frost Lane in Lawrence, with walls and pillars adorned in paint strokes from visitors, is the site of fine art classes for all ages and artistic levels. Teichman opened the studio roughly 20 years ago, sharing her passion through 12hour programs, over an eight-week period.

“It was very clear I should be taking this path,” Teichman said of her artistic calling.“I wasn't going to do science, I was the one who everybody brought the art projects to in school and in camp and the scissors to cut hair and so forth.”

Before bringing her skills to the Five Towns where she currently resides, Teichman spent time at the Art Students League in New York City, while her children were at school. She then

went to Santa Fe to further explore impressionism and took master's level workshops in Tuscany, Italy, Provence, France and other cities.

Teichman has created a community in her Five Towns space for people to connect and learn, while painting something they are proud of.

“It’s a really nice group of girls, really, really nice,”

Rebecca Ettedgui, a mother enrolled in one of Teichman’s classes said, of her classmates who she has grown close with.“This is like my therapy.”

Ettedgui started taking classes in September 2019.

“I came and I kind of never left,” Ettedgui said.

Since starting her artistic journey at the Art Studio of the Five Towns, with no previous experience, Ettedgui has painted multiple scenes with religious inspiration, depicting the last day of Rosh Hashanah, Hebrew messages and a portrayal of her wedding day with inspiration from the television show "Laguna Beach."

Arthur Kaye, a pediatrician, started art classes at the studio in May, this year; his favorite part,“just being in my own little world,” he said.

Teichman runs each session as a studio style class, allowing all participants to paint whatever they please. She will instruct and assist as needed, including her method of using dental floss to help guide perspective lines in scene paintings.

The studio also features a 10-year-old gallery with Teichman’s work, which she has sold for around 25 years, she said. Central Park scenes, Baltimore landscapes, Tuscany buildings, and her grandchildren, all appear in her work, — in which she uses a palette knife to create texture.

Rock Hall Museu M

in the heart of Lawrence

This museum displays the long and storied history of Long Island and the Five Towns — Justin Ellis, former docent at Rock Hall Museum

Hidden in the Village of Lawrence is Rock Hall Museum, which was built by Josiah Martin during the Revolutionary War in 1767. He was an English plantation owner who was born and raised on the West Indian island of Antigua.

Martin purchased 600 acres of land and built Rock Hall.

In Lawrence today, the two ponds at Sutton Park and Martin’s Lane were apart of the original property.

“Many patrons didn’t know that slavery existed on Long Island and that the Martin Family, were loyalists during the American Revolution,” said Justin Ellis, former docent at Rock Hall Museum.

As the estate declined, in 1824, Thomas Hewlett acquired 125 acres of Rock Hall from Samuel Martin’s (Josiah’s son) heirs. He was able to develop sources of revenue directly from Rock Hall and transformed it into a summer tourist spot in the 1830s after renovations.

Melissa Berman/Herald Rock Hall was built by Josiah Martin (1699-1778) in 1767 during the Revolutionary War. Today it serves as a Town of Hempstead museum.
Rock Hall employees Amy Vacchio, left, Brendon McManamy, and Tiffany Lyons, right dressed in colonial costume in 2017.

“This museum displays the long and storied history of Long Island and the Five Towns,” Ellis said.“The Five Towns have played an integral part to the story of Long Island and the United States. The existence and continued preservation of the museum speaks to the importance of our history and the impact our history continues to play in the Five Towns and beyond.”

Overtime, the land was expanded to three acres and fewer family members were utilizing the home.

In 1948, the Town of Hempstead accepted the challenge of preserving Rock Hall on three acres of land and the Museum of the Town of Hempstead was born. The property was restored into its colonial state in the 1950s and opened its doors to the public in 1953.

“Through its beautiful grounds and magnificent halls one can learn about the history and development of Long Island from the earliest European settlers through the modern day,” Ellis said.

Today, the house is set up with period furnishings and is constantly being reviewed and studied for accuracy.

“We refurnished the house from 1803 inventory when Dr. Samuel Martin dies, they make a list of everything that’s in the house,” said Amy Vacchio, director of Rock Hall Museum.“We have a handful of original pieces and everything is period but not necessarily from the family.”

Rock Hall truly is a community gem and offers fascinating insight into the history of the Five Towns.

'“Through its innovative and interactive programs and field trips, school groups and community, members can both interact with the past and learn how the past continues to shape us today,” Ellis said.

Rock Hall Museum is known for its Country Fair, which has welcomed visitors every fall for 38 years. The popular seasonal event Oct. 19-20 this year includes entertainment, shows and vendors. Docents dressed in period costumes transport everyone back to the Colonial era with related activities of that time. Fall activities entice visitors, who enjoy the harvest market, make-your-own scarecrow, farm animals, and, of course, some time in the pumpkin patch.

HIghlights of the guest parlor include a George III Broadwood mahogany pianoforte, dated 1792, an English guitar, harp, and a fireplace.

SpeakeaSy TheaTer hidden in Woodmere

TTheater has always been in my blood, it’s in every cell in my body and so it just found a way to come to the forefront,” Lanter said. “For me, this was a really great opportunity for creative expression for those who share a love of drama and sharing other people’s stories.

here’s nothing more hidden than a speakeasy theater in the basement of a Woodmere home.

Shtark Contrast, a nonprofit community theater debuted in the summer of 2019, and is the brainchild of Jennifer Lanter a longtime high school drama director and former Playbill magazine writer.

Lanter created her own theater company along with a group of her former theater students to dedicate a space for Five Towns’ aspiring writers, actors, directors, dramaturges, set designers, and stage managers.

They produce both new and well-known works within the context of a Jewish community. Shtark Contrast questions how tradition can be imbued with a new vitality —and how heritage can build a bridge from past to future.

Their concept is portable theater: rehearsal occurs in Lanter’s house, performances are at any venue that will house/ sponsor their production, as well as in her home's theater.

“We have a small really hidden theater that’s in the basement, it’s kind of cool,” Lanter said.“People need to have passwords to get in and they don’t know what show they’re seeing

until they get inside the doors and the show is announced.”

The actors play guards at the door; each theatergoer receives a different code and needs to be checked in. There’s a lot of theater that goes into the entire evening and experience.

“It’s all 100 percent local talent and it all started with my former high school drama students,” Lanter said.“Not only is it local, but it was conceived by former students who share a love of theater and come back to the community to be together.”

It serves as an opportunity for those who have the “theater bug” and did not pursue a career in the field to perform.

Shtark Contrast is actually designated as an Off-Off-Broadway theater, due to being within 17 miles of New York City's theater district.

“Theater has always been in my blood, it’s in every cell in my body and so it just found a way to come to the forefront,” Lanter said.“For me, this was a really great opportunity for creative expression for those who share a love of drama and sharing other people’s stories.”

stories, walking in other people’s shoes and bringing their personalities to life.

“I would love for the community to know we exist and that we’re here for like-minded people who are both interested in participating in the creative end and knowing that there’s local entertainment if you want to see a show,” Lanter said.“We really strive for an intimate experience between the audience and the performers in the speakeasy setting.”

Five Towns Wine & Liquor is home to a mural titled “Around the world in 60 days.” Bianca Romero, a New York City based artist, was commissioned to create the piece by liquor brand Beam Suntory, now Suntory Global Spirits, to promote their products in-store.

Donald Kumm, owner of the 45-year-old store, which celebrated its anniversary on St. Patrick’s Day, requested a graffiti style painting paying homage

Tim Baker/Herald Bianca Romero painted a mural in the Five Towns Wine & Liquor store, which highlights global liquor brands in 2018. The mural takes customers on a journey around the world through Suntory Global Spirits products.
Donald Kumm, the store's owner, came to the United States from Seoul, Korea in 1973.

to America and the value of freedom. Kumm came to the United States in 1973, from Seoul Korea and now resides in Hewlett.

“America gave me a chance to do everything I wanted,” Kumm said.

Romero felt a connection due to their similar cultural backgrounds.

“They’re Korean owned and I’m half Korean so they really wanted me to do it,” Romero said.

The piece, spanning from one end of the store to the other, was painted in panels and installed over the course of a few days. The creation took about two months, Kumm said.

Romero said due to her longstanding relationship with the brand Maker’s Mark, she was given creative liberty.

“I came up with the concept,” Romero said.

From left to right, the mural takes viewers on a journey around the world, starting in New York City, through liquor from each country including Yamazaki whiskey from Japan, Hornitos tequila from Mexico, Courvoisier from France and Maker’s Mark, Jim Beam

and Basil Hayden’s from America. At the far right of the mural, there is an image of Martin Luther King Jr. to symbolize the journey’s end in America.

“It was a really awesome project,” Romero said.“At that time it was the biggest mural I had done.”

Kumm was happy with the completed piece, as he felt that it translated the same joy he feels in running his store.

“It shows the way I respect my customers, the way I love my business,” Kumm said.

A hidden gem of the Five Towns can be found in Five Towns Wine & Liquor, where its mural is symbolic of Donald Kumm’s achievement in realizing the American dream.
The store has an extensive selection of wine and spirits.

A train ride to Broadwaywith no return

SSeth Rudetsky, formerly of North Woodmere, has made a name for himself in the arts while helping people. 'There were definitely a lot of opportunities in public schools,' Rudetsky said. 'I was doing chorus, band, orchestra, acting class, musical. I'm very thankful to the Five Towns for that.'

eth Rudetsky, formerly of North Woodmere, has not only made a name for himself in the arts, but helps people while doing so.

New York City-born Rudetsky moved to the Five Towns in his early elementary years. It was in the Hewlett-Woodmere school district where his performance career took off, despite facing community pushback for being gay.

“The arts, there were definitely a lot of opportunities in public schools, which there are not anymore,” Rudetsky said. “Growing up, I was doing chorus, choral, band, orchestra, special chorus, acting class, musicals. I mean, I there was so many arts, so I'm very thankful to the Five Towns for that.”

He would also take the train from Woodmere to the city to see Broadway shows, most notably over the winter break from school, when his family pooled all the money they would

spend on vacation to attend three shows. This trip, at 7-years-old, was where the “Pajama Game” sparked Rudetsky’s everlasting ‘obsession’ with theater.

Rudetsky has taken that love to SiriusXm where he deejays on the On Broadway channel. Earlier in his career, Rudetsky was a pianist and conductor on Broadway, then comedy writer on Rosie O’Donnell's television show.

He was also involved in the jukebox musical parody of ''70s disaster movies,“Disaster!,” which had a short Broadway run in 2016.

More recently, he’s appeared on stage in his own show, "Deconstructing Broadway," in Boston, London and Los Angeles. Books by Rudetsky can be found on shelves, documenting his experience in the arts along with young adult novels.

Now he's taken his act to the sea for Seth’s Big Fat Broadway Cruise, where he travels with Broadway stars and fans to destinations like Bermuda and the British Virgin Islands for a theater-centric travel experience. Some of Rudetsky’s most prized work is

the social justice he does with his husband James Wesley — co-producing music to support victims of the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooting; benefit concerts for You Gotta Believe, a foster child organization helping older kids find families; and Stars In The House live stream show, raising money for the Entertainment Community Fund (formerly the Actors Fund), which came about when Broadway was shut down during the pandemic.

Most recently, Rudetsky created the Jewish Broadway Alliance, to combat antisemitism and to bring hostages home from captivity in Gaza, which he hopes to grow.

Among his many endeavours, Rudetsky has written books about his experience on Broadway.
Rudetsky, left, hosts Broadway Cruises with stars like James Monroe Iglehard, traveling around the world.
Chita Rivera, left and Seth Rudetsky performed together, one of the many stars he's performed with on numerous stages.
