CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
T
he Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores is pleased to provide you with this handy guide which is filled with helpful information. The guide lists the nearly 300 members of the Chamber of Commerce who are committed to making our community a great place to live. In their 325 year history, the communities of the Bellmores have grown with a population exceeding that of many cities in the country. The south shore, with numerous canals and excellent waterways, is an asset to boat owners and fisherman. They boast a vibrant and growing business community along with one of the finest education facilities in the state. The Chamber of Commerce works all year to give back to the community. In early spring, there is the Easter Parade – where about 300 children from our area bring their parents for a fun day in Bellmore Village – shopping local merchants and receiving free treats. May starts our ever popular Friday Night Car Show where over 400 car owners display their wonderful restored cars from yesterday. Visitors are allowed to view the car show and then stroll down beautiful Bedford Avenue or enjoy a meal in one of our fabulous eateries. In late September or October, we host Nassau County’s largest family oriented event of its kind, The Bellmore Family Street Festival, which hosts an estimated 120,000 plus visitors. In the fall, there is the Halloween Parade, where another 400 children in costume come to town to parade and trick or treat the merchants who provide treats. The Santa Run takes place the day after Thanksgiving. The Chamber brings Santa throughout the Bellmore’s on a fire truck. The Chamber then presents Santa and a free movie to the children at the Bellmore Theater, to the delight of hundreds of families. Our Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Extravaganza bring horse drawn carriages and an old time trolley to the heart of the village. Over 500 families come out to enjoy the holiday spirit. The last event of the year is the annual Menorah Lighting which brings together the community to celebrate the festival of lights. Traveling in and around the Bellmores you will notice the Chamber’s commitment to beautification and enhancement. Our downtown boasts award-winning revitalization designs featuring updated architecture and facade improvements that provide an old fashioned shopping village experience. Our beautiful 9-11 Memorial Park at the North Bellmore Library and the Veterans Memorial Park in Bellmore Village are adorned with seasonal flowers and provide a place for private reflection. The Chamber is also pleased to have a strong working relationship with all our elected officials from the town, county and state. Rounding out our partnership is our dedicated police, fire, auxiliary police and emergency medical providers. We rely on them for so much and are very grateful for all their support. We ask you to support your local businesses by shopping locally and helping make the business community prosper and flourish. We look forward to sharing our wonderful community events with you and to keep the chamber and community partnership thriving.

In addition to the last five years Jill has spent working for L & M Publications, she has over 25 years experience in the advertis-ing and promotions industry. Her experience includes corporate and agency strategic planning for the promotion of retail consumer goods. Jill feels that it is a privilege to continue to serve as a board member of a great chamber in a community that she truly enjoys.
GREG CONNEELY TREASURER
Greg Conneely - The Conneely Allstate Insurance - took over the Conneely Insurance Agency from his father Tom in 2006 and soon joined The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores. Greg is dedicated and patient to ensure that each client has the right coverage to meet their needs. Under Greg’s leadership, the agency has continued to grow and has expanded its product offering to include carriers outside the Allstate umbrella, both personal and commercial, and he has started helping clients plan for retirement. The Conneely Agency started in 1970 in Freeport and, after several moves, settled into the Bellmore community in 1985. Over the years, the Conneely Agency has provided Long Island and the Bell-mores outstanding service and has been recognized by Allstate as one of the Premier agencies on Long Island. Prior to taking over the family business, Greg worked in the technology industry in several sales and management positions. Greg is also an active member in the Bellmore Lions Club where for the last three years he has been Secretary. He lives in Huntington with his wife, Courtney, and their three daughters.
STEVE EPLAN
Steve Eplan, owner of The Rock Underground: an innovative performance based school of rock music, has been a lifelong resident of the Bellmore/Merrick area. As a student of its public schools system, team member in its athletics programs, supporter of local fairs and charity events, coach for a local basketball team, and a small business owner, Steve, his wife and three children have been solid contributors to the South Shore community and Bellmore Village. As it began, Steve owned the building at Bedford Ave and Fredericks Ave where he ran his successful mortgage business "Perry Funding". As he saw the village slowly morph into a more cohesive and interesting weave of restau-rants, specialty shops, and boutiques, his desire to pursue a passion for music, which he shared with his children and siblings, all musicians, increased and culminated with the timely move of his long time tenant "Exclusive Kitchens". With this development in early 2010, he saw his opening. It had been some time that Steve had been working with and presenting his own kids’ bands as they played summer street fairs and benefits throughout the Island. Having had some experience with music schools and as a lesson-taking student guitarist himself, with the help of his two music partners, Paul Casanova and Billy Handy Jr. , he decided to convert his hobby into a full-blown school. This to him was a logical step in the fulfillment of a vision for Bellmore Village, with its dance schools, theatres, and eateries. The concept was obvious.
GENE JUDD
Gene Judd - Island Greenery - Gene Judd was born and raised in Merrick, and he, like many others in his profession, began cutting lawns for the neighbors. At an early age, it was clear that Gene was a natural entrepreneur. This quickly turned into a business and became a full time job after high school. Gene was the owner/operator of Royal Landscaping which serviced properties in Merrick, Bellmore and Wantagh. In 2002, Gene purchased Island Greenery, located in Bellmore Village on Grand Avenue. Island Greenery was in desperate need of renovations and TLC. After completing the necessary renovations, Island Greenery quickly evolved into a full service nursery. Offering a wide variety of annual and perennial flowers, trees, and shrubs; services included weekly maintenance, landscape design and installation. Later a masonry division was added to complement the landscape design service. Island Greenery’s employees included local students and retirees alike. After nine years of growth, Gene felt Island Greenery Continued on next page

had outgrown its location and needed to expand. After discovering a local property for sale, he decided to make the move. Island Greenery’s new home is now located on the corner of Bellmore Avenue and Oak Street, the property is 25,000 square feet, more than doubling the original location. The move has enabled Gene to provide his clients a much greater plant selection and additional services. Since the original purchase of Island Greenery, Gene has been active in The Bellmore Chamber of Commerce. Later, he became a board member and has contributed to many events such as the Bellmore Street Fair and the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting to name a few. Gene has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for the past 23 years. Gene is currently the Vice President of The Lions Club of the Bellmores. Gene was recently honored by the Bellmore Republican Club for his continued support.
KEVIN MACKINNON
After graduating from Island Trees High School in 2006, Marc went on to study Physics at Stony Brook University for two years before deciding to take a different path. It was after realizing that he had been assisting friends and family (and some small businesses) with computers for years that he knew where his passion truly lies. Marc opened up Overview Computer Services, LLC in January of 2010 and leased an office in the same Professional Building in which his father practices dentistry three months later. Overview deals in all kinds of computer service and repairs and specializes in IT work for small- and medium-sized businesses. Overview takes care of over a dozen dental practices in the NY area. When not working with the frustrations of the IT world, Marc spends his time with his friends, family and girlfriend, Lauren, who has recently started working for the company as the Operations Manager.
BOB PODOLSKI
Kevin MacKinnon - Days Gone Bye has been a resident of Bellmore for the past 16 years. He has three daughters and three beautiful grandchildren. Kevin retired from Yellow Freight, after 35 years. Having a great pension, enabled him to take a year of traveling to visit his two daughters who live out of state and indulge in a vacation here and there. After a year of not working Kevin felt he needed to get involved in something. Having a relationship with Billy Polara, Kevin was asked if he wanted to work the new store, Days Gone Bye, so he took the offer. Having a great time at the store, meeting people and having a sense of belonging, Kevin decided it was time to do some investing. Last November, Kevin and Billy became partners and formed a corporation. Along with the store, he felt the need to get more involved in the community. Not only did he join the Bellmore Lions Club but he also decided to join the Chamber of Com-merce which he heard nothing but great things about. Kevin is not one to take a back seat and is always looking for a challenge, therefore he made the decision to get more involved and asked to be on the Board of Directors of the Chamber. Kevin is looking forward to contributing his ideas to the already great things the Chamber does for its businesses and residential community. By being more involved, Kevin is hoping to get more information and insight in managing his business, Days Gone Bye, an old fashioned candy and retro toy store.

HISTORY By BRIAN ALESSANDRO The first records of the community that is now the Bellmores appeared in the mid- to late-1600s. It all began when a prominent farmer, John Smith, gave his son, Jeremiah, a land deed for 100 acres of salt marsh. The marsh provided a fine hay, ideal for raising cattle. Soon, people came from all around to lay claim and buy acreage on the marsh. Robert Bedell, another of Bellmore’s earliest settlers, moved to the community during the 1640s. He was among the more successful salt marsh farmers. The Bedell home, built by John Bedell, Robert’s son, still stands at Merrick Road and South Saint Marks Avenue. It has been declared an historical landmark. Another early pioneer was Thomas Southard, a farmer from what is now North Bellmore, who owned 200 acres of land in 1655. Southard’s home still sits by what is now the Southern State Parkway. It, too, has since been declared a landmark. In the late 1700s, George Washington marched through the community to decorate Revolutionary War heroes. As Washington made his way along Merrick Road, he noted the abundance of Bellmore’s salt grasses in his journal. Before Bellmore became Bellmore in the 1880s, the community was divided into two distinct neighborhoods. North Bellmore was known as Smithville South, and Bellmore was called New Bridge. In the 1860s, shortly after the Civil War, the Long Island Rail Road was built a few feet south of where the current trestle stands near Sunrise Highway. At the time, the community comprised mainly fishermen and farmers, who used the Long Island Rail Road to ferry their goods to market. The railroad unified the community. In fact, the Long Island Rail Road renamed the Smithville-Newbridge region as Bellmore in the early 1880s. There are probably 150 stories as to how Bellmore got its name. According to local historians, Bellmore was likely given its moniker to connote “beautiful village.” Bellmore has had its fair share of notable talent. TV weather prognosticator Elliot “Storm” Field graduated from Mepham High School in 1966, and TV producer Roone Arledge in 1948. Actor George Kennedy lived in Bellmore and attended St. Barnabas Parochial School. New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani lived in North Bellmore. And Central Intelligence Agency Director William Casey also called Bellmore home at one time. Many famous Civil War veterans also lived in Bellmore, including Andrew Jackson Russell, who fought at Gettysburg and died during the 1930s. The WEAF Radio tower, which broadcasted from Maple Avenue in the 1930s, was an important landmark in Bellmore. Restaurants have always been a mainstay in Bellmore. The Bavarian Village on Sunrise Highway is a memorable piece of Bellmore history. In its heyday, during the 1930s, the German restaurant, a place remembered for “immense fun,” was
Herald file photo
often booked for weddings. Its cuisine attracted people from throughout the metropolitan area. It was later renamed Sunrise Village. McCluskey’s Steakhouse, which closed in 1995, was famous throughout the metropolitan area. Patrons from as far as New Jersey would venture to the eatery for its steak and fried onions. Trudie Cowen founded the Historical Society of the Bellmores in 1974, shortly before the community’s 300th anniversary. Today, the Bellmore/North Bellmore community stands as one of Nassau County’s finest, with top-notch schools, an array of businesses, houses of worship and recreational facilities, and numerous service organizations. Bellmore Village, the restored “old-fashioned” downtown, now links Bellmore’s past with the present. The Bellmore Herald wishes to thank Clarence Anspake, a member of the Historical Society of the Bellmores, for his help in compiling this history. The society runs a museum on Pettit Avenue in Bellmore, in front of the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road station.

TOWN OF HEMPSTEAD The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles with a population of approximately 760,000 people. Within the Town there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Under the current system, the Town of Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Republican Kate Murray — and a six-member Town Council. The six members of the council are elected from one of six councilmatic districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have a four-year term of office. The supervisor serves as the chief executive officer of town government. She presides over all town board meetings, directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments, employing just more than 2,100 people. As the chief financial officer of the township, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. HOW TO REACH THE HERALD
I
n many ways, putting out a newspaper each week is an interactive process. We need your participation to do our job, so we offer you — our readers and partners — a reminder of how and when to reach us. To tell us what’s going on in your community, or news of upcoming events sponsored by civic, service, religious or community organizations, the deadline is 10 a.m. the Friday prior to publication. Notices are printed free of charge, but must be typed and double-spaced. We also welcome the news of your family life, your business life and your social life. We accept, at no charge, obituaries and Neighbors in the News items, including awards, honors, births, graduations, marriages and promotions. We value your opinions, and provide a forum for them in our popular Letters to the Editor space. Letters are accepted until 5 p.m. the Friday prior to publication. Thousands of Long Islanders have cut their utility bills by switching to solar energy. What are you waiting for? More and more Long Islanders are turning to the sun to power their homes and businesses — generating the electricity and heating the water they use every day. Why solar energy? The unlimited power of the sun enables you to cut — even eliminate — your energy bills, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. And, solar power has never been more affordable. It takes only about 3 to 4 years to pay off a residential system using the dollars that would have gone to utility bills anyway… and thereafter all power generated is FREE for some 25+ years! Why Built Well Solar? Established in 2001, we are Long Island’s original solar energy provider. We’ve designed and installed more systems than most other companies combined. Find out just how easy and affordable it is to make the switch to solar energy! Built Well Solar’s turnkey design and installation services make it easy. We take care of everything, and everything is included. For a FREE Site Visit & Estimate CALL: 516-695-1000 E-MAIL: info@builtwellsolar.com VISIT: www.builtwellsolar.com Ask us about the “skylight-look” Energy Star-rated VELUX solar hot water system.
Thanks to our customers, we are the only company voted “Best of Long Island” solar business four years in a row!
