“It’s life-changing to not have horrible knee pain all the time.” Suffering every day with the debilitating effects of osteoarthritis, 65-year old Karen Fitzgerald came to South Nassau’s Joint Replacement Institute hoping for relief. She struggled to walk, shop, exercise and sleep. Dr. Bradley Gerber, MD, chief of total joint replacement at South Nassau, performed a total knee replacement using the Sigma® Rotating Platform Knee, a unique design that lasts longer and feels more natural than other types of knee replacements. Ask her how she’s feeling today and Karen will tell you, “I can enjoy my grandchildren, tend to my garden, take the dog for a walk and do the little things that you take for granted.” She’s pain-free and living her life to the fullest.

t first glance, the East Meadow offense looks a little young. But the Jets’ youth also has experience, and although the returning players took some lumps, they still managed to help push the team to the Nassau Conference I playoffs last season. Ranked No. 7 entering 2014, now East Meadow hopes to start returning some of the very same lumps they absorbed. “We’re pretty young with 10 underclassmen out of 16 offensive players,” head coach Vin Mascia said. “But they’ve got that year of varsity under their belt.” Among the returnees thrown into the fire last fall is senior running back John Wilson, who went from backup to starter and piled up more than 800 yards rushing and a dozen touchdowns. “He gained a load of experience and is our meat-andpotatoes,” Mascia said of the 5-foot, 8-inch, 180-pounder. “He really answered the bell [last season].” Wilson will get some help in the backfield from senior Jed Puck-Silverstein and a host of wingbacks, including senior Brian Kavanagh and a trio of juniors—Marcus Kabigting, Billy Piano and Tom Provenzano. Sophomore quarterback Anthony Love-Kemper jumped into the starter’s role for five games last season, and that experience should go a long way in helping him fire up the East Meadow offense this fall. At 6-3, 180 pounds, he can spread the field with his strong arm and is also an excellent runner. “We should be able to protect him and open some holes for him,” Mascia said. “He’s going to 14 — September 11, 2014

EAST ROCKAWAY Rocks hope experience will be a factor
I
BY ANDREW MCCLURE
t’s no surprise East Rockaway’s roster is a relatively short list, but this year’s numbers are low, even by small-school standards. The Rocks, who are coming off a 2-6 record, have just 23 players on the team. East Rockaway, the No. 12 seed in Conference IV, is hopeful that experience and talent at the skill positions will help the team overcome a lack of depth. The Rocks will battle with Carle Place/Wheatley, Oyster Bay, Cold Spring Harbor, West Hempstead, Seaford, Island Trees, and Friends Academy. East Rockaway returns its starting quarterback, and three of its four leading rushers from a season ago. With experienced linemen, and numerous players who have been in the program since junior high, the Rocks should be able to compete with most of their opponents. Russ Pajer, in his 20th season as head coach, always expects his teams to be able to stay in games. “With our ability to control the ball, we should be able to play with just about everyone on the schedule,” Pajer said. “A lot of these guys have been running this offense since 7th grade, so they know the system. As always, a couple of injuries could make it a long season, so we have to stay healthy. We don’t have much depth, so we need to keep people on the field, and guys are going to have to know how to play multiple positions.” Junior Mike Delgais returns at quarterback. Delgais had a strong year calling the signals as a sophomore. With a year under his belt, he should be vastly improved 16 — September 11, 2014

HEWLETT Defense to lead balanced Bulldogs
H
BY TONY BELLISSIMO
ewlett enters 2014 in search of an eighth consecutive playoff appearance after securing the final postseason berth in Conference III a year ago with a .500 record. The Bulldogs have some figuring out to do on offense but return key pieces of the puzzle as well as seven defensive starters. Head coach Jay Iaquinta believes three-time defending county champion Lawrence remains the team to beat, but expects to compete against everyone. The Bulldogs, the No. 7 seed, open at home with a night game Sept. 12 versus Manhasset. “If we can get a couple of good wins and stay healthy, finishing in the top four isn’t out of the question,” he said. Hewlett exited the second week of camp with few position battles, but quarterback was one of them. Senior Jeff Rizzo started every game under center in 2013 and performed well with more than 500 yards rushing. Last year’s backup, junior Josh Pincus, has an exceptional arm and a better grasp of the scheme compared to last summer. “There’s nothing like competition,” Iaquinta said. “We’ve got two capable quarterbacks going into scrimmages. Each has an outstanding quality. The one that does the best job of protecting the ball is probably the one we’ll go with.” Rizzo and Pincus can help the offense in other ways, Iaqunita said, and will contribute if not at quarterback. Rizzo is quick and tall, making him an ideal candidate for a receiver spot, while Pincus would be in line for some carries behind featured running back Jeremy Leguillow. The

KENNEDY Cougars banking on spread offense
N
BY STEVE SINISKI
ew head coach Tom Durnin takes over Kennedy’s football program not only with big school experience, but big game experience under his belt. A former high school player for Massapequa and an assistant on Baldwin’s varsity staff for the last seven years, Durnin hits town as a new face and brings a new offensive system along with him. Rather than dip the Cougars toes in the spread offense, Durnin’s going for the big splash — and not just because 12th-seeded Kennedy accepted the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge after being nominated by district rival Mepham during summer camp. The Cougars are going all in on the spread, riding the backs of an offensive line that brings solid size and considerable athleticism to the table. Three starters return, and senior center Aydin Kessler had some new technique to learn with all snaps in the spread offense coming in the shotgun formation, rather than having the quarterback directly under him. Senior Logan Zoppel, a 220-pounder, returns at tackle with senior Dom Albi, a 235-pounder, his bookend. A transfer from East Meadow, senior Joel Diaz, tips the scales at 240 pounds and can play guard or tackle. This flexibility and a strong camp gave Durnin some flexibility up front. Senior Spencer Cloth and sophomore Ryan Rodriguez are also in the mix on the line. In fact, Cloth, has made strong progress at center after volunteering during the offseason to learn the position. “If you’re able 24 — September 11, 2014

No. 501 was a dramatic 28-27 victory over Plainedge in the Conference III title game, and No. 502 came a week later, 41-32, over Huntington to make it backto-back Long Island Class III crowns for the Golden Tornadoes. This year, Lawrence is attempting to become the first Nassau team in history to capture three consecutive L.I. championships. The first two were led by quarterback Joe Capobianco, who holds L.I. records for career passing yards (8,013) and touchdowns (100.) “ “We’re going to be a little different on offense, but we’ve got playmakers and I think our defense is going to be very strong,” head coach Joe Martillotti said. The offense — and opposing defensive plans — starts with dynamic senior Jordan Fredericks, who dominated out of the backfield last season after a move from slot receiver. The Syracuse-bound Fredericks had 1,668 yards rushing, 628 receiving, and a Long Island-best 34 total touchdowns. “Jordan’s widely considered the top talent in the county,” Martillotti said. “He’s scary with the ball. Not once has he been caught from behind. He’s added 15 pounds of muscle without losing a step.” After serving as one of Capobianco’s main targets a year ago and finishing with more than 500 receiving yards, senior Sean Moran takes over under center. playoff team in five of the last six years, including four in a row, Long Beach must overcome the likely absence of its best player for all of 2014 to make noise in Conference II. Running back Chris Parler, who earned All-Long Island honors last season after leading the Marines with 15 touchdowns, is expected to miss his senior campaign after undergoing knee surgery. “He hasn’t been cleared to begin any running, so there’s a good chance he won’t be playing,” head coach Scott Martin said. “Chris is a tremendous athlete. It’s a big loss, but other guys just have to pick up the slack.” Talented sophomore Tyreek Bromley, who averaged five carries per game last season when Long Beach finished 5-4, will assume a larger portion of the workload. “He’s probably our top back,” Martin said. “He’s a bruising runner who can break tackles. He’ll be able to handle the increased carries.” Junior Jordan Teemer, one of the JV team standouts in 2013, is also part of the backfield conversation. “He’s another hard-nosed runner and looking to be a two-way starter,” Martin said. The offense will feature a two-pronged quarterback attack with senior Matt Varian and sophomore Sam Brown. “Both will take snaps in every game,” Martin noted. “Matt is very good in open space and we’re looking for him to run the option. He was a nice contributor last year and finished with a big playoff game against MacArthur. “Sam is a pocket type,” he added. “He’s a big kid with a 28 — September 11, 2014

MacARTHUR Generals getting used to conference change
M
BY ANDREW COEN
acArthur head coach Bobby Fehrenbach has gotten quite used to changing conferences in the last six years, and 2014 will be no different. The Generals are moving up from Conference II to Conference I this season due to a spike in enrollment. It marks MacArthur’s fifth conference change since the 2008 season, but Fehrebach said the league and opponents matter little to his team. “We’ve been in Conference I before and held our own,” said Fehrebach, who has been MacArthur’s coach since 1999 and guided the school to a Conference II title in 2002. “You just have to line up and play.” The Generals only had 13 seniors during last year’s 5-5 campaign that ended with a 48-13 semifinal loss to eventual Long Island champion Carey at Hofstra. Fehrenbach said with such a young team, seven sophomores received playoff experience, which should pay dividends in 2014. Two sophomore contributors last year are serving as captains this year in quarterback Jimmy Kelleher and wide receiver/linebacker Jared Wolf. They have joined senior captains Paul Giuliano (fullback/defensive line) and Kevin Carboy (center/ defensive line) in helping lead offseason workouts. “They are great character guys,” said Fehrenbach of his four captains. “They have stepped up and earned the respect of their peers.” Joining Giuliano in the backfield is senior Brandon Kustek, who can also split out as a receiver. MALVERNE Mules boast plenty of playmakers

ast season was bittersweet for Malverne, which made considerable strides after a winless 2012 but still fell shy of the Conference IV playoffs despite a .500 record. A fivepoint defeat at Island Trees in the finale ultimately denied the Mules a postseason berth, but they’ll try to avenge the loss in this year’s opener at home on Sept. 13. “We needed a taste of success after a couple of difficult years,” head coach Kito Lockwood said. “Even though we didn’t make the playoffs, we accomplished a lot. This year we definitely want to take another step and be a playoff team. We’ll be disappointed if we don’t get in.” Lockwood said Malverne’s group of returnees, led by seniors Kyle Richard, Maxon Jean, and Bryce Todd, are looking forward to the opening kickoff and improving on last year’s 4-4 mark. The Mules are seeded eighth and play a balanced schedule that includes games against top-ranked and three-time defending county champion Roosevelt, as well as lowestseed Oyster Bay. “We need to take it one game at a time,” Lockwood said. “Our offense is confident. Our defense needs to be better than last year, and I think it will be.” The coach said he’s excited about an experienced and potentially explosive offense despite losing all but one starter up front. Todd serves as the new starting quarterback after getting his feet wet in certain packages behind All-County performer Jamal Hall. “Bryce has a tremendous skill set,” Lockwood said. “The only knock on him 38 — September 11, 2014

ROOSEVELT Rough Riders eye fourth straight county title

oosevelt won its third consecutive county title, and 11th in program history before falling to Babylon, 27-26, in the Long Island Class IV Championship Game in 2013. The topseeded Rough Riders lost nearly everyone from a team that finished 11-1, but hope to be in the thick of things again. Long-time head coach Joe Vito, who picked up the 150th victory of his career when Roosevelt knocked off Seaford, 6-3, for the Nassau title, expects it to take some time for his relatively inexperienced team to jell. “We have a bunch of seniors, but most didn’t get all that much playing time, last season,” Vito said. “It’s going to be a work in progress. We want to get better each day, and to be playing our best football in November. The key for us is to be hot come playoff time.” If the Rough Riders are going to be successful, the revamped offensive line will have to lead the way. Junior Chukuwa Ukwu anchors a line that returns just two starters. Ukwu, a 6-foot-3 guard who has started since his freshman year, is a force on both sides of the ball. He’s joined by senior tackle Dorkim Simeona, and senior guard Khasen Edwards. Sophomore Lattrel Hollis takes over at center. Senior Kashawn Vailes is a solid blocker, and a capable receiver from the tight end position. Sophomore Stephon Vailes takes the reins at quarterback. SOUTH SIDE Cyclones moving in the right direction

ince Phil Onesto took over as South Side head coach in 2011, the Cyclones have made strides each season. After taking over a team that went 1-7 in 2010, South Side made its first playoff appearance since 2008 last season as the eight seed in Conference II. The program returns to its previous longtime home of Conference III this year after a drop in enrollment. “We’re going to work hard to not take a step back,” said Onesto, who was a senior wide receiver and safety on the last South Side team to win a county title in 2001. “The energy is probably the highest it has ever been.” Returning under center is senior quarterback Steven DiMare, who served as a junior captain a year ago. The athletic DiMare, who is also an All-County lacrosse player, is captaining the 2014 team with senior running back Luke Scaduto. The latter helped punch South Side’s ticket to the postseason last year with the winning touchdown run in a 27-21 victory against Calhoun in the regular season finale. Joining Scaduto in the backfield is senior Sean Buchner. The versatile Buchner will also be lined up as a slot receiver. “We’re going to be expecting big things from him,” Onesto said of Buchner. A key offensive target for DiMare to eye is senior wide receiver Stephen Parker. Parker, who is committed to play lacrosse at the Air Force Academy, also stepped up on special teams last year with a

V.S. CENTRAL Eagles hope to feed off playoff year

BY TONY BELLISSIMO
ew head coach Bryan Goldman is looking for Valley Stream Central to build off last season’s success, which resulted in the program’s first playoff appearance since 1993. “The mantra in camp has been to carry the torch of what last year’s team achieved,” said Goldman, who guided the Eagles at the JV level for the past five seasons and takes over from Frank Chimienti. “We’ve got great kids; 35 on varsity,” he added. “We’re trying to reach the next echelon and string playoff appearances together, but nothing ever comes easy in our conference.” Central, seeded No. 9 in Conference I, plays its first two games on the road before hosting Uniondale on the final Saturday of September. The Eagles open with a trip to Baldwin, followed by a visit to a Massapequa team that came within a score of winning last year’s county title. The docket also includes Hempstead, Port Washington, Syosset, East Meadow, and defending county champion Farmingdale. “Enrollment-wise, we’re small compared to most of the teams we play,” Goldman said. “We need to find some sort of equalizer against bigger and deeper opponents. Offensively, we want get snaps off quickly.” The offense was dealt a blow well before camp kicked off when Goldman learned two-year starting quarterback Vito Friscia would skip his senior campaign to concentrate on baseball. WANTAGH Warriors boast talent at skill positions

antagh graduated nearly 30 seniors that helped guide the program toward the top of Conference II, but longtime head coach Keith Sachs is hoping new faces will step up to keep the Warriors as championship contenders. The 2013 Wantagh season, which featured 29 seniors, ended in heartbreak with a 14-12 county semifinal loss to longtime nemesis Garden City at Hofstra. While many players from that game are no longer on the roster, some key returners earned valuable playing time in the postseason, which Sachs hopes to carry over. “We only return one starting lineman, but the offseason commitment and training is encouraging and people are ready to step in,” said Sachs, who has guided Wantagh to 124 wins in his more than two decades leading the program. “We always have high expectations, but the inexperience will be a challenge.” Wantagh’s lone returning offensive lineman is senior George Potts. The 6-foot-3, 235pound Potts will be joined on the line by senior Ralph Sommer, who has been a threeyear starter at linebacker with over 100 career tackles. While their line lacks experience, the Warriors return several key skilled position players including senior running back Vinny Vasheo. The 5-9 170 pound senior scored touchdowns via rushing, receiving, kickoff and punt returns as a junior. Joining Vasheo in the backfield is junior running back Kyle Sliwak. WEST HEMPSTEAD Rams aim to extend successful stretch

he last time the West Hempstead Rams were on the football field, they were licking their wounds after a tough 10-0 loss to Seaford at Hofstra in the semifinals of the Conference IV playoffs. Few players remain from the team that finished 7-3 in 2013, but the new cast of characters is just as motivated to return to the postseason. The Rams may not have the level of talent they’ve had over the past three or four years, but the roster is made up of dedicated, hard-working players who are looking to be successful. Head coach Dom Carre likes the look of his team. “These guys are just great to coach and to be around all the time,” Carre said. “They love practicing, working out, competing, and playing football. The past few years, our program produced a bunch of guys who are playing in college or at prep schools. We might not have that type of talent, this year, but we have guys that are real hungry. They want to do well.” One key returnee is starting quarterback Anthony Beaubrun. The four-year varsity player had a solid year calling the signals out of West Hempstead’s doublewing attack. Beaubrun, who according to Carre had excellent summer workouts, is a team-first player with an excellent skill set. His ability to run the ball makes him a perfect fit for the offense. Carre hopes to pass the ball a little bit more with Beaubrun at the helm. West Hempstead had a onetwo punch in the backfield that will be hard to replace, 62 — September 11, 2014
