We are pleased to present our annual Living In East Meadow, a special supplement to the East Meadow Herald. Not only does this guide include vital information about East Meadow, but it also gives you a look at some of the people and places that represent the best of the community.

Think of Living In East Meadow as an “owner’s manual” for newcomers and longtime residents alike. As you’ll see in these pages, there’s an amazingly rich social fabric here.

Those of us who live here know East Meadow is a wonderful place with a rich history and unique “hidden gems,” which are an integral part of what makes East Meadow such a wonderful place to live, work, shop, and play. Discover just why we’ve identified them as “hidden gems” as you read through this guide.

The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church was the first of its kind when it was established 100 years ago. Today, it continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community to not only its parishioners, but its neighbors too.

From radio shows in the East Meadow Public Library to dozens of hidden nature gems like the berm site that welcomes people to the community, as well as the bird sanctuary that’s been left to the wild East Meadow is a place that cares about some of its most unique features.

And if you’ve lived here a while, and are perusing shops along East Meadow Avenue, you know that there are gems in every pocket of the hamlet as evidenced in the welcoming business district that adds so much to our community.

Living in East Meadow is published in cooperation with the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce. We are honored to mark another year as the chamber's official publication.

The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce, celebrating its 70th year, is deeply invested in the community we proudly call home. Our membership, which includes businesses, organizations, and civic leaders, is dedicated to enhancing East Meadow and Salisbury—two vibrant hamlets within the Town of Hempstead and integral parts of the East Meadow School District.

Together, we work tirelessly to improve our entire community. The Chamber plays a crucial role in maintaining relationships and acting as a liaison between local businesses, various levels of government, and neighboring chambers. Our goal is to foster business growth and create a business-friendly environment that ensures East Meadow, Salisbury, and the surrounding areas remain wonderful places to live, work, and raise a family.

Each year, we organize valuable initiatives such as mock job interviews for high school students, equipping them with essential skills and lifelong advice. Thanks to the support of

state and local officials, our past events have become beloved community traditions, including Trunk or Treat, the Easter Egg Hunt, the 9/11 Memorial Service, Community Day, and many more. As these events continue to grow, we are able to give back even more, such as awarding four scholarships this year to exceptional seniors from East Meadow and W.T. Clarke High Schools.

Our regular monthly meetings provide opportunities for members to network and welcome new guests. We invite you to explore our directory, which highlights the local businesses that support our community in countless ways.

A heartfelt thank you to the East Meadow community for your unwavering support of our local businesses. Remember to shop local! For more information, please contact our office at (516) 794-3727 or visit us at EastMeadowChamber.com.

Holy Trinity Orthodox Church has thrived on Green Street in East Meadow for the last century. Founded by Eastern European immigrants, who needed a place to attend services on Long Island, it was the first of its kind in the Nassau-Suffolk area.

A century of faith and outreach at

HOLY TRINITY ORTHODOX CHURCH

In the heart of East Meadow lies a piece of living, hidden history.

Celebrating our 100th year with Pentecost symbolizes renewal, growth and the Holy Spirit's guidance.

— Rev. Martin Kraus

The Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, which stands in a quiet neighborhood on Green Street, was the first of its kind — not only in East Meadow but on Long Island — when it was established in 1924. From humble beginnings, the church has grown and evolved over the last century, welcoming a diverse community of Orthodox Christians who come from all walks of life and ethnicities.

The church has long been cherished by its parishioners, including Nina Kraus, 96, who’s been a member since 1933.

One hundred years ago, Orthodox Christians, many of whom were Eastern European immigrants, had to embark on quite a journey to attend religious services. Those living in what is now East Meadow took long treks, sometimes hopping

on a streetcar, just to reach the nearest parishes in New York City.

But that all changed after a snowstorm in 1915.

The storm shut down transportation into the city, making it clear that a local church was desperately needed.

Enter Holy Trinity Church. The first Paschal Vespers — a special evening prayer service held on the Saturday before Easter, known as Pascha in Orthodoxy — were conducted in the home of Stephen Koshansky, a founding member of the church, in May of 1918. This marked the very first Orthodox Christian service celebrated on Long Island.

The parish was officially organized in 1924, making Holy Trinity Church the first Orthodox Christian parish in the Nassau-Suffolk area. The original structure was created in 1926, but the church you see today at 369 Green Street, East Meadow, was built in 1962.

Today, the church is run by the Rev. Martin Kraus, who has been at Holy Trinity for the last 17 years. He and his wife reside in the community with their five children and are part of charitable efforts that connect the church and its parishioners to larger issues.

Kraus is the chaplain for youth within the Orthodox Diocese of New York and New Jer-

sey, and he and his wife do a lot of work with youth retreats and summer camps that cater to kids.

“I can see our young kids struggling in the world today,” he told the Herald.“So, with our mission, we are really working hard to reach out and to help our kids understand how important they are to the world and that there is a future for them.”

The church’s work with youth is just one of its many forms of outreach.

Holy Trinity celebrated its 100th anniversary earlier this year on June 23, which was also the Feast of Pentecost, a significant holiday on the Christian calendar.

“Celebrating our 100th year in conjunction with Pentecost is deeply significant for us because it symbolizes renewal, growth and the active presence of the Holy Spirit in guiding us in the church,” Kraus said.“These things resonate profoundly with our celebration for 100 years.”

As Holy Trinity Orthodox Church looks ahead to its next century, it serves not only as a place of worship but also as a living testament to the resilience and spirit of the East Meadow community. As dedicated parishioners continue missions of outreach and support, the church remains a hidden gem in

East Meadow, preserving a rich history while embracing a bright future.

In its quiet neighborhood on Green Street, Holy Trinity offers itself as a reminder that

sometimes the most profound treasures are those hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered.

Today, Holy Trinity Orthodox Church engages in charitable outreach, catering to many areas of need outside of the church, including youth. Some of its youngest members, including Michel Federoff, 3, and Ivan Karlgut, 5, are part of the church’s fabric that will lead it into another century of faith and history.

A hidden sanctuary in the heart of

East Meadow

Awide array of animals — especially birds — call a protected piece of property in East Meadow their home. The Council of East Meadow Community Organizations, led by its president, Joe Parisi, has worked tirelessly for nearly three decades to preserve this cherished piece of land.

This particular piece of property is a beautiful area,” Parisi said. “It really has a lot of wildlife.

Not everyone knows about the bird sanctuary in East Meadow, located off Tremont Place, because it is not open to the public — but that’s for a good reason.

The sanctuary began as a sand mine in 1927, but when miners struck a water table below the ground’s surface, it filled with water. As East Meadow grew into the suburb it is today, operations at the sand mine declined until the Town of Hempstead purchased it in 1967. It was then made into a stormwater discharge basin, and in 1999, it was designated a bird sanctuary.

That land is home to a variety of species of birds, turtles, frogs, and snakes, many of which rely on it as a habitat because it is isolated from any other body of water. Efforts to maintain the facility have been ongoing ever since it was converted into a sanctuary. Often around Earth Day, there are community cleanups, and many Eagle Scouts and Boy Scout

troops in the area complete projects to keep the space beautiful, vibrant and clean.

Today, visitors to the bird sanctuary will observe a 20-acre lake. Surrounded by houses and other residential buildings, it serves an important purpose for the animals that call it home; that's why the community has always rallied behind it to preserve the space for nature, as it was originally intended.

beautiful area,” Parisi said.“It really has a lot of wildlife.”

The sanctuary is located behind Speno Park, which is accessed from East Meadow Avenue. With the help of East Meadow Kiwanis and other community organizations, maintaining the property is crucial, supported by the cooperation and guidance of Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead.

The 20-acre lake, home to a variety of species of birds, turtles, frogs and snakes, is situated off of Tremont Place, and directly behind Speno Park. Above, turtles soak in the sun on a warm day.
For 25 years, efforts have been ongoing to maintain the property. Pollution and vandalism are problems, but several East Meadow groups work in cooperation with Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead to keep the area vibrant.

ostering a sense of pride in our community’s appearance.” That is the mission of the recently established Friends for a Beautiful East Meadow. The nonprofit organization aims to increase beautification and preservation efforts throughout East Meadow and help make it more visually stunning and inviting for residents.

While there are many organizations in and around East Meadow that strive to improve the community, Friends for a Beautiful East Meadow is one that some may not be familiar with, as it was recently established earlier this year. Environmentally driven, Friends held its first meeting at the East Meadow Public Library in March and has since completed projects at Salisbury Estates, the East Meadow baseball and softball fields, and various elementary schools for Earth Day.

The Earth Day cleanup alone drew over 100 community members, and more than 50 bags of garbage were collected.

Organization directors Edward Rosenthal, Richie Krug Jr., Taleen Krug, and Todd Weinstein have discussed a range of new projects based on feedback from the community. Environmental initiatives such as planting new trees, flowers, and

The organization would like to partner with local schools to launch a new creative initiative to beautify the town through public art installations. Friends for a Beautiful East Meadow also believes that art installations in public spaces can create a greater sense of unity and increase cultural appreciation within the town. Additionally, the organization plans to start educational programs, workshops, and seminars to inspire community

members to contribute to beautifying and preserving the town.

More recent initiatives include its Hometown Military Hero Banner Program. Residents can honor a family member or friend with patriotic banners that will be placed on poles around East Meadow. The organization is currently taking orders, and banners will be displayed starting in 2025.

At the corner of Bellmore Avenue and North Jerusalem Road in East Meadow, there’s a berm site, a triangular section of land at the intersection that has been left completely to Nassau County. Berm sites are constructed normally slightly elevated pieces of land that divide properties or add to neighborhood aesthetics.

The property in East Meadow belongs to Nassau County and was adopted by the Council of East Meadow Community Organizations just over 30 years ago in 1992.

In the early ’90s, the council received funding to help build the berm that is there now. It’s a large planter with a variety of plants, bushes, and shrubs. Throughout the years, it has been maintained in different ways, according to Joseph Parisi, the council’s president.

The original berm was built out of wood. A major cleanup and renovation took place in 2018. The foliage was land -

Throughout the years, various organizations have worked alongside the council to help with renovations and cleanups to the berm site. Eagle Scouts have completed projects there, and last summer, the berm received upgrades thanks to a $1,000 grant from PSEG Long Island.

“It’s something that’s good for everyone,” Nathan Koovor, an Eagle Scout who completed a renovation at the berm, said.“And it’s good to help out the community.”

New plantings and mulch, among other renovations, have completely restored the site.

Aradio show is not something that every library has, but the East Meadow Public Library can say otherwise. “It Came From The Radio” is a syndicated weekly broadcast, recorded live, featuring the voice of Mark Torres, along with other guests and segment hosts. Once a month, it broadcasts live in front of an audience, right here in East Meadow.

I love doing it live,” Torres said. “You never know what’s going to happen.

Torres, the charismatic host, has been captivating East Meadow audiences since the early 2000s. The show has become a cherished, albeit hidden, gem within the community.

“It Came From The Radio” is a beloved sci-fi radio show airing on WGBB-AM in Merrick and WGBB-PM in New York, with additional broadcasts on WARY-FM in Westchester.

A long-time enthusiast of the science fiction genre, Torres launched the show in 2003, aspiring to connect with the comic book industry through his love for broadcasting. The show’s success soon led him to collaborate with Kelly Gordon, the art director at East Meadow Library, whom he met during an art show. United by their shared passion for comic books, Torres invited Gordon onto the show to promote EMCon, a comic convention created by the library. This collaboration

Giving Birth? Look No Further than the South Shore’s Only High Performing Hospital for Maternity Care

Mothers looking for a hospital at which to give birth should consider the quality indicators used by U.S. News & World Report ® to determine institutions deemed High Performing for Maternity care.

Mount Sinai South Nassau is the only South Shore hospital to earn the rating of High Performing based on eight key measures:

• Reduced C-section delivery rates

• Low early elective delivery rates

• Low overall unexpected newborn complication rates

• Increased routine VBAC rates

• Increased exclusive human milk feeding rates

• Low episiotomy rates

• Routine birthing-friendly practices

• Transparency on racial/ethnic disparities

If you want the best birthing experience for you and for your baby, look no further than Mount Sinai South Nassau.
