Many of Elmont’s visitors come for the nationally renowned Belmont Park, which hosts the annual horseracing event known as the Belmont Stakes. Elmont’s boundaries were decided in 1898, when its shift from Queens had been finalized. Before that, however, Elmont was predominantly farmland and controlled by Dutch settlers. Belmont Racetrack was completed in 1905, a turning point in its history. Sale of the farmland began thereafter and houses were erected in its place. Elmont School District includes six elementary schools: Dutch Broadway, Clara H. Carlson, Gotham Avenue, Covert Avenue, Alden Terrace and Stewart Manor. Nearly two thousand students attend Elmont Memorial High School, part of the Sewanhaka Central High School District. Elmont also has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Paul Sapienza leads the Elmont Chamber of Commerce. There are a number of civic associations, such as the Parkhurst Civic Association, that are dedicated to helping residents express their views in organized ways. Elmont has about 33,000 residents living in about 10,300 housing units, according to the 2010 census. One of the most prominent features of the community is the Elmont Memorial Library. A beautiful building and venue for a variety of events and entertainment series, the library boasts an auditorium and huge space for town meetings. Thousands visit the library every month for a truly interactive media experience. Notable natives of Elmont are WNBA President Donna Orender, author Nelson DeMille, comedian Andy Kaufman (buried at Beth David Cemetery) and trainer Cara Castronuova, who has appeared on “The Biggest Loser” television show.

What is now Franklin Square was originally used as grazing land and farmland by settlers near the center of the Hempstead Plains. By the 1950s, homes started to encroach on farmland. Franklin Square was a major beneficiary of the migration of people from New York City. The Franklin Square Union Free School District is consists of the Polk Street, John Street and Washington Street elementary schools. The nearby Willow Road Elementary School is in Valley Stream District 13. The high schools in the area are Valley Stream North and H. Frank Carey. Franklin Square has a volunteer fire department and is served by the Nassau County Police Department’s 5th Precinct. Its most notable park is Rath Park, which includes a pool, basketball, handball, tennis, football and baseball fields and a playground. Local organizations include the Franklin Square Chamber of Commerce, currently led by President Bruno M. Caracciolo; a historical society; youth football and soccer programs; and Franklin Square Little League. One of Franklin Square’s oldest and most notable restaurants is Plattdeutsche, which hosts many community events. Franklin Square has about 29,320 residents living in about 9,600 housing units, according to the 2010 census. Notable natives of Franklin Square include the artist and author Barbara Rosenthal, who wrote for the Franklin Square Bulletin in 1959 at age 11; novelist Alice Hoffman; radio personality Rich Davis; country singer Lisa Matassa; “Jersey Shore” reality television show star Jenni “JWoww” Farley; music journalist and award-winning author Jeff Tamarkin; radio and television host Sean Hannity; NASA astronaut Michael Massimino; professional football player Vinny Testaverde and Major League Baseball player Al Weis.

Justify captures Triple Crown By Tony Bellissimo 2018 was another standout year in thoroughbred horseracing as Justify etched himself into the sport’s book of immortality at the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes. Under veteran jockey Mike Smith, the 3-year-old became only the 13th horse to claim the Triple Crown in a breathtaking pole-to-pole romp. “He’s so gifted; he was sent from heaven,” said the 52-year-old Smith, who urged Justify to the front from post No. 1, fended off early challengers Restoring Hope and Bravazo, kept a charging Vino Rosso in his rearview mirror around the turn, and held off late-firing longshot Gronkowski to win by 1 ¾ lengths before a thunderous crowd of 90,000-plus. “The great ones, they just find another gear,” said trainer Bob Baffert, who saddled American Pharoah in 2015 to end a 37-year-old Triple Crown drought. “Justify was showing me the same signs as American Pharoah; he showed me that same brilliance,” he added. “He’s a superior horse. I mean, he could have won every race on the undercard today. He’s just that kind of horse.”
Eric DunetzHerald
Mike Smith rode Justify to victory on June 9, 2018, to become the 13th horse to claim the Triple Crown during the 150th running of the Belmont Stakes in Elmont.
It was a fitting way to mark the anniversary of one of horse racing’s premiere events, and the excitement was palpable as fans packed the park. Many were attending their first race meeting. With spring and fall racing seasons,
Belmont Park is Elmont’s most visited attraction. Starting in 2021, the park will not only draw horse-racing aficionados but is also slated to become the new home for the New York Islanders hockey franchise.

arisa Filardo and Joel DiGillio realized they had a problem that needed to be fixed. Filardo, an educator, and DiGillio, a member of the Little League’s board, were frustrated with the perpetually poor conditions at Rath Park. Filardo has spearheaded a new push to get town and local officials to provide proper upgrades and renovations. “We put out a survey and got over 600 responses about what people want for our park,” educator Marisa Filardo said. The survey revealed that residents wanted improvements for the children’s playground, sprinklers for the field and repairs to the fences, which are broken and missing parts in several areas. Together with DiGillio, Filardo has been developing plans for a three- to five-year revitalization project for the park. DiGillio said that the park needed more attention from the Town of Hempstead, which was evident

when this year’s Little League season was pushed back by two weeks because of field conditions. Another concern is the lack of security. She described how multiple parents and residents have talked to her about unlawful activities at the park, including problems with squatters and drug use. Filardo hoped to present the town’s
latest plan at a Franklin Square town hall meeting this summer. The presentation will go over the plan’s budget, layout and financial options. Filardo hoped all Franklin Square residents would attend and voice their hopes for the park. “We want to make sure that everyone is heard,” Filardo said. “This isn’t just my park, this is Franklin Square’s park.”

lot of education is packed into the small neighborhoods of Franklin Square and Elmont. With five high schools making up the Sewanhaka High School District, Elmont and Franklin Square students tend to compete against one other in many sports. The fiercest rivalries occur when the two
teams play football and basketball. H. Frank Carey High School in Franklin Square, named after the former Sewanhaka High School District Board of Education president and Elmont Memorial High School, have been designated by New York State as Schools of Excellence.

Alden Terrace students build character By Ronny Reyes

lden Terrace School students learned how to turn mistakes and slip-ups into wonderful opportunities as they read their April book of the month, “Beautiful Oops,” by Barney Saltzberg. School Principal Shawnée Warfield said the book’s lesson tied in well with the month’s theme of responsibility, which taught the students how to build character. “Character education and compassion are vital components in a child’s social emotional learning,” Warfield said. “Learning about good character is just as important as academics.” Each grade participated in a project to incorporate what they read. Students in fifth grade completed book reports with hand-drawn images that portrayed the book’s theme. Kindergartners, on the other hand, sorted out recyclables and used the items to create insect sculptures to celebrate

he libraries in Franklin Square and Elmont serve a vital function for the community. As a meeting place for clubs and organizations, the libraries also serve as havens for students who need to escape everyday destractions. Both libraries provide a free family movie viewing every week, live entertainment, lecturers, special exhibits, expert guests and activites geared toward children and young adults to encourage them to read more, whether it’s a craft, game or seasonal celebration. They emphasize that achieving literacy is the key to a healthy and productive lifestyle, and there are many ways to experience it.

T
he Elmont American Legion Riders of Post 1033 held their seventh annual Blessing of the Bikes on April 21, 2018. The local veterans’ group invited Freeport’s Deacon Bruce Burnham, from Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Freeport, to sprinkle holy water on more than 100 motorcycles, blessing them and the 2018 riding season. Legion Rider Post direc-
tor Peter Foltmer said the event serves as a way to promote motorcycle safety within the community. “Sometimes you see a rider raise his eyebrows when he sees the deacon spraying water on his bike,” Foltmer said, jokingly. “The event creates a positive relationship between the bikers and their community.” The bike blessing was accompanied by
a community barbecue, with proceeds going to benefit local charities. Five members of Post 1033 formed Elmont’s branch of the American Legion Riders eight years ago in order to promote motorcycle safety and a social atmosphere for local riders. Elmont’s Riders Post 1033 also offers services in funeral processions and actively participates in local parades and ceremonies.

ore than 400 residents settled in for a night to remember and to support those who have lost their lives to cancer, those who continue to battle it and those who have survived, as H. Frank Carey High School hosted its fourth Paint Your World Purple: Relay for Life Cancer Walk event in June 2018. The Relay for Life is a global fundraising event where communities join together to walk around a track or path all night long and gain sponsors to donate money to the American Cancer Society. Carey housed 39 teams on its fields who set up tents and chairs as team members relayed back and forth in order to have at least one member on the track at all times until the following morning, as specified in the event’s guidelines. “Cancer doesn’t take a night off, and tonight, neither will we,” said Nicholas Brusca, the Carey senior who spearheaded the event at the school. nature of the Relay, which brings together people from all walks of life for a single night to fight cancer. “Everyone here has been touched by cancer in some way,” McGuiness said. “It’s

Franklin Square Raiders bring home Arch Cup By Timothy Denton
T
he Franklin Square Raiders youth soccer club took a step forward, when its under-14 Academy travel team captured the Arch Capital Group Challenge Cup in statewide competition in June 2018 on the team’s home pitch in Franklin Square. “It’s the second time in three years that the Raiders have won the Arch Cup,” John Kokkoris said. Kokoris’ Johan Juniors Soccer provides the team with coaching and fitness training. “We played a team from Washingtonville — the Warriors — in the finals. We won, 4-0.” “Our season begins in August and runs through the June championships” the following year, Kokkoris said. “So these kids started working toward this last summer.” He also described a winter regimen of speed and agility training, work with weights and injury avoidance training. The Raiders are currently in their 37th season, with some 850 to 900 players

registered in the club’s two divisions. “We had 425 sign up this year for the intramural clubs,” said Robert Gervasi, the team’s director of travel soccer. The Raiders’ fall season, kicked off on Sept. 9 and will run through the first
week of November. “It’s nine games in 10 weeks,” Gervasi said. “We don’t play the Columbus Day weekend.” Interested families can contact the Raiders at (516) 900-3772, or by email at franklinsquaresoccer@gmail.com.

Town of Hempstead The Town of Hempstead, founded in 1644, is the largest township in the United States, encompassing 142 square miles, with a population of roughly 760,000 people. Within the town, there are 34 unincorporated areas and 22 incorporated villages, more than 65 parks and marinas, and 2,500 miles of roads. Hempstead is overseen by a town supervisor — currently Democrat Laura Gillen — and a six-member Town Council. The six council members are elected from one of six districts. The supervisor has a two-year term, and the council members have four-year terms of office. The supervisor is the chief executive officer of town government, presiding over all town board meetings and directing the legislative and administrative functions of that body. The supervisor also oversees the day-to-day operations of a municipal government of 24 major departments. As the town’s chief financial officer, the supervisor is responsible for the creation and the implementation of a town budget. Council members are responsible for adopting the annual budget, amending the town code and the building zone ordinances, adopting all traffic regulations, and hearing applications for changes of zone and special exceptions to zoning codes. Elmont activist Mary Joesten reaches out to hungry By Timothy Denton
M
ary Joesten, a long-time community activist and advocate for those living on the margins of society, was named Nassau County Senior Citizen Woman of the Year by County Executive Laura Curran. The award was in recognition of the years of service Joesten has given to Elmont and its surrounding communities. Joesten has been serving the homeless, hungry, veterans and abused women — to name just a few of her constituencies — since founding the Faith Mission Outreach Center with her late husband, Ed, in 1969. Joesten, a lifelong devout Roman Catholic, said she was inspired by her church’s Acts of Corporal Mercy, which include feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, clothing the naked and visiting the sick and incarcerated. Nowadays, Joesten can be found serving hot meals and bagging food at the
