The middle linebacker and captain of the team is senior Jared Venegas, a somewhat stoic individual entangled in an in-your-face game such as football. “Jared is a great kid, honors student, whole nine yards. Rant is not only a safety, but the team’s primary punter as well and looks to fill any other voids the Big Red may need. “Last year, in our 100th season, we unfortunately didn’t win a game, but we like to say our team’s mascot this year is ‘The Phoenix’, as to say we will rise and will rise as one,” Kopecky said. “We’re still finding our team identity in practice right now, but we have nothing to lose…and I really think we can surprise some people with our athleticism.” Although The Big Red carries 23 varsity players, it’ll look to put its strengths to the test with some of the same teams that spoiled their centu-

zen has hands capable of making grabs that have the opposition’s quarterback looking foolish. Junior Buck Andrea is the starting safety that will look to help out over the top and is capable of coming up and stopping the run as well. One member of the defensive back corps that plays a very pivotal key is sophomore Cooper Trepeta. A capable cornerback on the defensive front, Trepeta is also being tried out at the quarterback position. “He’s vying for the starting quarterback position as a sophomore,” LoGerfo said. “If the quarterback position doesn’t pan out for him, he will play a significant role in our backfield.” Competition for the starting quarterback role with Trepeta is returning backup from last year Will Holowchak and Neil Noviello, a young player who has had history at the position in ninth grade. Junior offensive lineman Seamus Fallon was also lauded for his hard work in the trenches at these early practices. Hard work seems to be a common theme at practices these days for the Falcons, as LoGerfo pointed out: “We have a full house every day. There’s no chasing kids around to get them here. They want to be here and they’re working hard.” “We’ve got some tough teams in our conference that

could definitely take a run at the top of the conference… every week is going to be a battle but we’re working hard,” he explained. The common theme of hard work lends to the team’s collective goal, to get back to Hofstra once again and relinquish the memories of last year’s defeat in the Conference IV semis. NorTh Shore Vikings focusing on fundamentals
T

he North Shore Vikings strapped on their pads this preseason coming off of a 6-4 campaign and looking to alter their identity. In the past and especially last season, North Shore relied on its composite star power. Of those stars was starting quarterback and Schneider Trophy finalist Ryan Aughavin. “We could make mistakes last year, because we had guys like Ryan that could do things like score off of a fumble recovery out of nowhere,” head coach Dan Agovino said. “This year, although there are some question marks, we are trying to minimize mistakes now so we can play smart football during the season.” North Shore started its schematic tweaking early in June, when the team collaborated on an early minicamp and competed in various 7-on-7’s throughout the county. “Although we had a good amount of kids graduate from the program, the 7-on-7’s are helping the guys we have now come together as a unit,” Agovino said. Of course, with any successful group, you need a sturdy core. That is being provided by a duo of seniors and returning varsity players alike in Mike Sylvester and Roman Iuvara, two offensive lineman that are strong and nifty along the front. These two skilled linemen are looking to mentor sophomore Andrew Franco, who is moving into the trenches with them this season. Replacing Aughavin at the quarterback position will be 28 — September 7, 2017
junior Dan Livoti, who Agovino hopes will continue to grow into the leadership role to go along with his natural skill and athleticism. Livoti, a stellar baseball pitcher in his own right, was lauded by his coach for possessing a tremendous arm. “He’s got a cannon for an arm,” Agovino said. “The varsity game experience isn’t there yet, but he has the ability and the skills.” Joining Livoti in the huddle is a starting wide receiving corps consisting of seniors Joe Magliocco, and Joseph Schmitt and junior Luca Marra. This group of upperclassmen offers versatility as Schmitt, a 6-foot tall wideout, will attempt to dominate on the outside. Marra, the smallest of the three at 5’8 and roughly 150 pounds, will look to play as the team’s slot receiver and work short to intermediate routes for Livoti. Magliocco, the team’s leading wide receiver, is looking to not only lead in statistics, but by example as well. “He (Magliocco) has the ability to receive potential all-county honors. He’s that kind of talent,” Agovino said. Magliocco has the ability and will have the opportunity to line up either on the outside or in the slot to maximize his output

and the effect he will have on this offense. In the backfield, seniors Joe Barcellos, Sean Hehn, and Kyle Commando, along with sophomore Will Scarola, are the lead competitors for touches in a somewhat crowded backfield. Also looking for a shot at carries are junior Cristian Milo and senior Chris Garland. “We have a lot of guys competing with each other early on to be the lead back,” Agovino said. “Everyone is stepping up and pushing each other. It’s a healthy competition. No one is going against their teammate, they’re just competition with them where they all get better as a result.” The healthy competition bodes well for all involved, including Joe Barcellos. When Agovino was asked who he believed to be leader of his team’s defense, without hesitation he offered: “Barcellos. He’s just a really tough kid. He may not be the most vocal defensive player, but definitely a player the other guys will rally around.” Barcellos is interested in either joining one of the military academies post-high school or be involved in an ROTC program. “He wins the respect of everyone he crosses, and as a tough wrestler as well, he’s going to be our leader at the outside linebacker position this year.” Also on the defensive end is Cristiano Mele, a nose tackle who is looking to cause headaches for opposing running backs. “He’s a big kid with

quick feet and doesn’t only plug up holes but can explode through as well.” As for the expectations for this season, Agovino was careful but confident. “Last year we were talking about county championships around this time of the year. This year I think we’re more focused on the individual game week to week.” Agovino also added: “This team has the ability to play very sound fundamental football, and with that, I think we can win some football games against some tough teams in the conference.” North Shore opens at Locust Valley on Sept. 9. ers,” Knoll said. “It’s going to probably take a little bit before everyone is on the same page.” Until then, Oyster Bay looks to its defense to keep it in each matchup. “While our offense is starting to mesh and our offensive skills are starting to match up to our defensive skills, our defense will play a big part in our games,” Knoll said. Juniors Sam Khodaparast and Jake Rankin will be key parts to this defensive line, looking to stuff the run and put some heavy pressure on the opposing quarterback. Junior Robert Zahradnik is another player that stands out in practice. “Zahradnik is a guy that catches your eye in practice. He works hard,” Knoll said. Although the Baymen have offensive linemen returning with key experience at the position, Knoll says the line is rather small. “When you’re on the smaller side on the offensive line, you have to constantly be moving. In that sense, we have to work on some more conditioning,” Knoll said. Amongst the teams that have a crossroads with Oyster Bay that have also graduated a large amount of seniors this past year are Friends Academy and Island Trees. “Friends Academy is a solid team but is kind of in the same boat as we are. We’re both thin. Island

Trees has solid varsity numbers but we want to compete with these teams,” Knoll said. Oyster Bay is not only looking to improve, but build a team with experience for the future. However for now, Knoll is straightforward in his approach: “We want to improve our skill level, but we are going to show up and try and give everyone a game.” HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
