Baldwin Consistency will be important for Bruins
E
By JOSEPH KELLARD
ntering his 30th season as head football coach in Baldwin, Steve Carroll knows about consistency and wants more of it. The longtime coach maintains that his team could have defeated Freeport in a Conference I semifinals last November if only it brought its A-game on each down. He believes success in 2017 hinges on his sixth-seeded team correcting their fickle play. “Last year when we played Freeport, some of our kids just didn’t play that consistently,” Carroll said. “Our consistency has to improve. We have to play good all the time.” The Bruins expect to sport a 40-man, junior-majority squad whose top returnees are four seniors lead by David Garcia, a wide receiver who also notched three interceptions playing in the defensive backfield last year. “What’s really good about David is that because he’s a receiver, he understands offensive movements very well,” said Carroll, who has racked up 158 career wins. “He gets it and makes a huge, huge difference for us.” Avalon Henry is a starting offensive and defensive lineman whose devotion to lifting weights during the offseason sealed his status as the team’s strongest player. “Avalon also moves extremely well for a big kid; nice fast feet,” Carroll said. “He understands movement very well.” Thomas Airey returns after he proved himself a capable inside linebacker and a sure-handed tight end. “He catches everything and finds

Carey Seahawks figure to be in title chase
F

inishing with an 8-3 record and falling in the county title game would be a great accomplishment for most high school football teams in Nassau. But for Carey, 2016 was a little disappointing. The Seahawks scored nearly 33 points per game, but gave up over 40 in three contests, and fell to perennialpower Garden City 42-14 in the Nassau II championship game. Carey, the No. 2 seed in the conference, lost a slew of seniors to graduation, including four offensive linemen, but 2017 is far from a rebuilding year. The Seahawks are deep on the defensive front and at some of the skill positions. Garden City, which finished at 12-0 and earned the Rutgers Cup as Nassau’s best, returns plenty and is once again the team everyone is chasing. The Seahawks travel to Garden City in Week 6. Elmont, MacArthur and Mepham figure to be in the mix as well. Head coach Mike Stanley, who has led Carey to a pair of Long Island titles, is intrigued by this year’s squad. “The guys put in a lot of time in the offseason, and had very positive summer workouts,” Stanley said. “We’re not as reliant on seniors as we were last year. Everyone is still looking up at Garden City, but I feel pretty good about this group. We’re going to try to keep moving in the right direction, and grow into our schedule as the season goes along. We have some strong returning players, and some young athletes pushing for playing time.” 10 — September 7, 2017

FreeporT Freepor Red Devils reload after championship run
T
By ANDREW MccLURE
he 2016 football season was one for the ages at Freeport. The Red Devils put up over 40 points per game and brought home the program’s eighth Nassau County championship. The ride didn’t stop there. The following week, they went on to knock off William Floyd, 28-14, to earn their fifth Long Island title. Freeport, the No. 2 seed in Conference I, graduated three first-team, All-Long Island players, including three-year starting quarterback Rashad Tucker. But the Red Devils return plenty from a team that lost just one game in 2016, and bring along some talented players from a 7-1 JV team. Oceanside, Massapequa, Farmingdale, and Hempstead are among the teams that will look to keep Freeport from repeating. Long-time head coach Russ Cellan believes his team will, once again, be in the hunt. “We have to replace a lot, but we’re pretty strong at the skill positions,” Cellan said. “It’s always a tough league. I like our senior leadership. The guys had an exceptional summer with the fitness and drills. I could not have asked them to do more to get ready for the season. It is high school football, so a few injuries can change a season. But, that’s the case for every team. We need to keep everyone on the field, and you always need to be a little lucky.” Sophomore Terrance Edmond comes from terrific stock. His brother was a Thorp Award winner for Freeport in 2006, and his father was a Division I wrestling champion at the University of Tennessee in 18 — September 7, 2017

Kennedy Cougars look to build off successful campaign
M
By JOE GALOTTI
uch of the success of the 2016 Kennedy football team was a product of experience. Last fall, the program made its way back to the postseason behind the efforts of a core group of seniors who had been with the club since their underclassman days. “That was definitely a big step for the program,” head coach Tom Durnin said. “A lot of our seniors we had since their sophomore year. For about 6 or 7 of them, our last game was their 25th game of varsity football. That team had a lot of experience. They had set goals for where they wanted to be as seniors since they were sophomores.” This year Kennedy will look to build upon last year’s five-win season, while integrating a large number of new players on to their squad. The team will likely have a roster of less than 30 players, so health will be key. But, that has not stopped Durnin from setting big goals for his group. “We graduated 25 seniors last year, but when you are trying to build a program, you say that tradition doesn’t graduate,” he said. “We definitely have a bunch of really talented kids, and would like to get back to the playoffs.” With a smaller roster, having talented two-way players is a must. The Cougars are certainly not lacking in that area. Junior Marco Travaglione will be a key figure on both the team’s offensive and defensive line, and has his coach expecting big things this year. “In my opinion, he’s one of the better players in the conference,” Durnin said. “He had a real nice year as 22 — September 7, 2017

oming off a special 6-win season that included a first-round playoff victory at MacArthur over the then-defending Nassau Conference II champions, Long Beach will compete in Conference I for the first time in 11 years. “The coaching staff and kids are excited for the challenge,” ninth-year head coach Scott Martin said. “Last year was great. Six wins are the most we’ve had in my tenure and we broke a lot of school records. Conference I will to be tough, but it’s not like Conference II was easy.” Many of the records the Marines set in 2016 were the product of quarterback Sam Brown. In addition to Brown, replacing longtime two-way standout Tyreek Bromley presents the biggest challenges. “We lost a lot of talent and we’re starting over with a new group,” Martin said. “We’re at our normal roster size of 30 and we’ve got some solid pieces.” How well Long Beach’s two-way linemen hold up through four quarters is a concern, Martin said, but the group is molding into shape. Senior center Sean McCarthy enters his third year as a starter and is accurate on shotgun snaps and a reliable blocker on passing and running plays. “He’s moving quicker and is in good physical shape,” Martin said. Senior Jack Shortell returns as the starter at left guard and is the team’s strongest lineman according to the coach. “He’s explosive off the snap and a big hitter on both sides of the ball,” Martin said. “He and Sean are teaching the younger guys and 26 — September 7, 2017

ith eight returning starters on both sides of the ball and a valuable year of varsity experience in the books, Oceanside has county championship dreams and enough talent to make it happen. The Sailors, on the heels of a record-breaking 2015 campaign that saw them win 10 games and play for the Conference I title, finished below .500 (4-5) a year ago and lost a playoff heartbreaker at Massapequa in the first round. “We were very inexperienced and didn’t handle adversity well,” said head coach Rob Blount, who has led the program to the semifinals at Hofstra in five of nine seasons. “We took a few lumps, but a lot of the guys who played in the county championship game two years ago are still here and know what it takes to win. “Our expectations are high and we’ll be disappointed if we don’t win a county championship,” he added. Oceanside is ranked No. 1 in the conference and gets an early opportunity to avenge last year’s playoff loss when it travels to Massapequa for the opener on Sept. 9. Two weeks later, the Sailors host Farmingdale in a rematch of the 2015 county final. “There’s never any relief in the schedule,” Blount said. “We know it takes a lot of components to win in Conference I. We have the best group of skill position players returning that we’ve ever had, so we’re excited to get going.” The bulk of last year’s offensive unit returns, led by senior signal-caller Tommy Heuer (1,376 yards, 14 touch-

Sewanhaka Indians rely on front line to be competitive

ewanhaka comes off back-to-back, disappointing 2-6 seasons in Nassau Conference II, but the Indians lost some tight ones in 2016, including a gutwrenching loss to Mepham in the final seconds, and an overtime loss the MacArthur. The Generals were the defending league champions. The Indians, who are typically ranked among the middle of the pack and tend to face a killer schedule, get a little bit of relief in 2017. Sewanhaka enters the season as the No. 11 seed. It will still have games with perennial playoff teams like Mepham and Elmont, and a muchimproved South Side unit, but the rest of the schedule puts the Indians in position to succeed. Despite losing 27 seniors and having a lack of depth on this season’s roster, the always-optimistic George Kasimatis, in his ninth year as head coach at Sewanhaka, expects to be competitive. “Believe me when I say that we will be in games,” Kasimatis said. “We have a nice core of athletes, and the guys are committed both on the field and in the classroom. They are very dedicated. The offensive line will be one of our strengths. I think we will go as far as the line takes us.” Junior center Shawn Cothias is flanked by senior guards Andre Termidor and Antonio Caputo. Termidor, a two-player with an endless motor, impressed Kasimatis with his selflessness. Seeing a need on the line, he went to his coach and volunteered to play guard rather than running back. South Side Cyclones’ goal is to take step forward

outh Side fulfilled a goal in 2016 of reaching the playoffs and this fall has eyes on accomplishing more. The Cyclones reached the postseason for the first time since 2008 with a 4-4 mark and fell to Roosevelt in the first round of the Conference III playoffs. Seventh-year head coach Phil Onesto would like to see his team take that next step as a program as a Conference II newcomer with a playoff win that would move South Side into the semifinals on the big stage at Hofstra. “This year the goal is not just making it back to the playoffs, it is making it back to Hofstra,” said Onesto, a standout receiver on South Side’s last team that played at Hofstra during its county title run in 2001. “We want to compete for a championship.” South Side graduated some key offensive talent from a team that rebounded from a winless 2015 including quarterback Shane Batyr, running back Jonny Picket and wide receiver Joe Licalzi. The Cyclones began 1-3 last year before winning three in a row to set up a postseason berth. “We need some guys to fill those spots,” Onesto said. “Luckily we return almost our whole offensive line.” South Side’s experienced line includes senior guards Peter Gibney and Tygah Scott, whose athleticism and size should open up holes for the Cyclones running game. Starting tackles Chris Coico and JT McCarthy also return giving the Cyclones veteran leadership in the trenches. Satchell recorded a game clinching fourth down sack in South Side’s 22-16 win against Lynbrook last year. fter 23 years a weight was lifted, and Valley Stream Central responded by spending its offseason lifting more weight. In 2016, under new head coach Mike Rubino, the Eagles had their first winning football season since 1993, finishing fourth in Conference I while going 5-4 on the year, which ended with a playoff loss to Farmingdale. Rubino and staff spent little time savoring the team’s triumphant turnaround, but set to work at season’s end taking stock. All the analytics, according to Rubino, pointed to one urgent indication. “We needed to get stronger,” Rubino said. “Looking at films and other things, we felt that adding strength would make the key difference. I give these kids credit for getting after it in the weight room these past months.” Now, newly-bulked, Valley Stream Central looks to a host of returning starters – and one particularly critical unknown quantity – to carry a newly-winning program into its first follow-up season, switching over this year to Conference II where the Eagles are seeded seventh. As the new regime faces its sophomore test, a crop of Eagles seniors brings experience to key positions. Notable in this regard is all-conference linebacker Joel Rosario, Valley Stream Central’s leading tackler and a two-way starter, whom Rubino intends to employ as a versatile offensive weapon. “Joel is our heart and soul on defense,” Rubino said. “But we’ll use him on offense a lot too, as a back or a receiver. ast fall proved to be Valley Stream South’s best season in recent memory, as it racked up four wins and finished with a .500 or better record for the first time since 2012. While Falcons head coach Joe Guastafeste was pleased with his team’s progress, he knows there is plenty more to accomplish. “Those are all nice steps forward for our program, but we did fall short of our goal, which was making the playoffs,” Guastafeste said. “Everything we do is with one purpose, and that’s to win enough games to get to the playoffs. Once you get into the playoffs, anything can happen.” South will have plenty of new talent to help it reach its ultimate goal of a postseason berth, as the varsity is expected to field close to 35 kids. “We haven’t had that many at Valley Stream South for as far as I can remember,” Guastafeste said. “There definitely are kids coming out for the team, and a lot of them are very athletic. We’re going to try and get our athletes the ball in space, and see what happens.” Over the summer, the Falcons ran approximately 20-25 clinics, and had about 30-35 varsity players attend each one. “We had a great offseason,” Guastafeste said. “Our team is definitely focused. They’re an aggressive group, and are probably one of the more athletic groups that I’ve had.” Taking over as starting quarterback is Matt Doncell.
