Get ‘em while you can Hot toys to buy for the holidays By Diane Schlindwein hildren learn about themselves and the world by playing. They learn critical thinking skills, how to get along with others, self-esteem and motor skills, not to mention how to let their imagination and creativity run wild. As parents, the ideal toy is not one that will allow a child to check out but one that will challenge and benefit the child in a healthy way. Toy experts predict that the hot toys this year are an eclectic mix of modern, techie items and simple, classic items. These examples are as mentally stimulating and educational as they are enjoyable. May The Force be with you Children of all ages — and parents — continue to 8 — November 30, 2017
enjoy traveling to “a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” The release of new movies in the Walt Disney “Star Wars” franchise has fueled a huge demand for “Star Wars” toys in the last two years. In fact, Fortune magazine online reports that the franchise raised the sales of the toy industry by 5 percent in 2016. The Spinmaster Star Wars Hero Droid BB-8, as inspired by the adorable “The Force Awakens” droid character, appears on many toy hot lists this year. For about $300, those ages 6 and up can enjoy full control of the 16-inch-tall droid. It has voice recognition and authentic lights and sounds, takes voice commands and has a unique “Follow Me” mode, where it will roll right alongside you, just as in the movie. Children love to bring their favorite characters to life, and this interactive gift will do just that. Monkey fun Fingerlings Baby Monkeys from HOLIDAY MAGIC
WowWee, another interactive product, are predicted to be a big seller this season. Christopher Byrne is the content director of Toys, Tots, Pets & More, a toy consumer research site whose editorial team reviews thousands of toys each year and writes comprehensive reviews. He believes that with Fingerlings, WowWee has “managed to incorporate electronics and play into something that we think kids are really going to respond to.” The six characters latch on to a finger and respond to touch and motion by moving their head, blinking their big monkey eyes and talking in a sweet voice. Kids ages 5 and up will have friendship right on their fingers. Each Fingerling sells for $14.99. American Girl dolls are always in favor Certain toys like dolls and action figures can help teach children positive values and learn about other cultures. American Girl just released Continued on next page HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS
Continued from previous page its newest BeForever character, Nanea Mitchell, a brave girl growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1941, just before Japan attacks Pearl Harbor. Stephanie Spanos, a spokeswoman for American Girl says, “Her efforts to help and heal her friends and neighbors during wartime are all driven by her spirit of aloha.” Children can get a taste of Hawaiian culture, American history and compassion by playing with Nanea. What’s more, American Girl is taking donations for the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program online and in retail stores through Dec. 31. Some might prefer to go the American Girl Create Your Own route, which allows them to customize a Truly Me doll online. “Custom choices include face molds, skin tones and freckles, eye and hair colors, hair textures, new cuts and styles, along with special extras like earrings, hearing aids, glasses and sunglasses, and braces,” Spanos says. a doll in their likeness that celebrates their uniqueness or get creative with another design. Back to basics Byrne believes that children are discovering the fun in simple and silly games. In this age of gadgets and electronics, going back to basics can be refreshing. “Today’s 11-year-olds have never lived in a world without a smartphone,” he says, “so it’s not a novelty to them. Yes, of course, they like the phones, but the real novelty is stuff you sit down and play with friends.” The Spinmaster Rube Goldberg Acrobat Challenge offers STEM-based learning by challenging kids to use gravity and spring forces to launch an acrobat out of a cannon. Boys and girls ages 8 and up can build and rebuild a random contraption with pieces like a seesaw ramp, circus ball, flaming hoop and snake to complete

the mission. It’s a fun toy that allows children to collaborate and play with their hands. Any of these toys are perfect for children to enjoy year-round. Give your kids the gift of love and laughter this holiday season.

minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool to room temperature. Carefully lay one phyllo sheet on cutting board and brush with melted butter. Place another sheet of phyllo on top and brush with melted butter. Cover remaining sheets with damp towel to prevent drying out. Position brushed pastry horizontally and cut into five strips. Place 1/2 teaspoon cranberry filling, one cube of cheese and 1/2 teaspoon chopped nuts in lower corner of each strip. Fold dough over filling to form triangle. Fold triangle up then over, forming another triangle. Continue folding to end of strip. Brush top with melted butter and sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon chopped nuts. Repeat with remaining strips of dough and remaining sheets of phyllo. Bake 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool on wire rack before serving. Note: If using frozen phyllo dough, thaw in refrigerator overnight. Beginnings’ Holiday Pulpo The popular Atlantic Beach restaurant offers up a tasty holiday creation.
Boil large pot of water. Carefully add eggs and boil on high 2 minutes then simmer 13 minutes. While eggs cook, chop parsley and scallions, if desired. Once eggs are cooked, transfer to bowl of ice water; cool 8-10 minutes. Peel eggs and cut in half lengthwise. Separate egg yolks into another bowl. Reserve egg white halves. Combine egg yolks with salt, pepper, vinegar and mustard. Add shredded cheese and mayonnaise; mix until smooth. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of yolk mixture into each egg white half. Add toppings, as desired. For classic deviled eggs, sprinkle paprika and chopped parsley over eggs. For a savory alternative, cook four strips of bacon and chop. Top eggs with chopped bacon and shredded cheese.
2 pounds octopus 1 onion 2 pieces bay leaf 1 teaspoon paprika Sea salt, to taste Fill a large soup pot with water, along with bay leaf. Cut onion in half. Add to water with bay leaf. Bring water to boil and submerge the octopus in water. Reduce heat and let simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from water and remove the tentacles. Sharing the spirit of the season How to be a better gift-giver By DiAnne Crown he best gifts aren’t necessarily the most expensive, surprising or best wrapped, say online gift gurus. Instead, the perfect present is usually practical, thoughtful and on the wish list. Here are five tips from the experts. Simple Gift, Simple Wrapping According to Yale University’s marketing and psychology professor Nathan Novemsky, over-the-top wrapping can promise more than it delivers. Elaborate packaging increases the anticipation of a gift and also increases the chance of the gift-receiver being disappointed if the present doesn’t fulfill expectations. “It’s like giving someone a Sears gift card in a Tiffany box,” says Novemsky. Practical and Uncomplicated People tend to overthink gifts, says Brian Handwerk in his Smithsonian. com article “How to Give the Best Gifts, According to Science.” This leads to disappointment on both ends as gift-givers expect a greater response and receivers don’t consider the gift useful. “For instance, givers may choose a complicated computer program with lots of features because they think it will be seen as more valuable,” says Handwerk. “But receivers may prefer an easy-to-use program with fewer features.” Instead, think about the convenience of the gift on a personal level. Would it be easy for you to use? Would you want this gift? By answering these questions yourself, you can gain insight on how the recipient might feel. All About the Receiver Consumer psychologist Kit Yarrow discusses the
20 — November 30, 2017
unfortunate “all about me” gift in a Time article, “Worst. Gift. Ever. The 6 Kinds of Presents You Should Never Give,” such as expensive diamond earrings you can’t afford or a donation to the gift-giver’s favorite charity. “If it was to one of MY favorite charities that would be different,” emphasizes Glenn, a 50-something manager Yallow interviewed. “Sometimes I think it’s not even about the charity, they think they’ll look altruistic. Either way, it’s not really a gift if you ask me.” Other nice-try gifts include the obvious regift, statement gifts that “typically offer disapproval or some kind of judgmental commentary aimed at the recipient,” and non-gifts. A non-gift is “something you would have purchased anyway,” says Yarrow. “Socks, frying pans, and hair brushes have all achieved the ‘worst gift’ designation by the people I’ve spoken with.” Following the List “I used to think my husband’s family was super weird for giving one another gift lists during the holidays and on birthdays,” says health and psychology writer Sunny Sea Gold. “Where’s the surprise? The effort? The proof that you know the person so well that you can divine exactly what he or she wants without asking?” However, as people get old, they lose the desire for useless, though thoughtful, junk that they didn’t want. According to research from Harvard and Stanford business schools, recipients are happier when they receive exactly what they asked for.
Keep your gift-wrapping simple to not raise expectations unnecessarily.
many people regarding holiday gifts. One woman, Margaret, is 81 years old and has been given many presents in her life. Yet her favorite was a flower box that her son David put in the balcony outside her room in her assisted living facility. Says Margaret, “David came up with the idea on his own and surprised me with it. I hadn’t realized how much I missed my garden until he installed it, the whole thing made me so happy.” This gift embraced all three essential elements of the perfect gift — generosity of time and effort, insight into the heart of the receiver and the emotional impact that comes from presenting a genuine and welcome surprise.
The Gift Trifecta According to Yarrow, there’s a magical trifecta to giving the perfect gift: generosity, insight and emotional impact. During Yarrow’s research in consumer psychology, she spoke with HOLIDAY MAGIC

Beyond wrapping paper Cute, clever ways to present gifts ake a statement when you give the perfect holiday gift. Sure a gift bag, wrapping paper and a bow are nice, but with a little thought and creativity, gift giving can be a present, too. Check out these ways to make the process of receiving the gift as memorable as the gift itself.
collect stones big and small, and then wash them with soap and water. Or purchase a bag of ready-to-decorate rocks from a home improvement store. Whether you collect rocks or buy them, be sure to prime them with acrylic paint, followed by colored paint and patterns. Use thin brushes or paint pens to write messages like “Naughty or Nice?” The festive stones can be keepsakes after the holiday. A gifting win-win.
Leave Notes In a time of text messaging, how nice is it to actually receive a handwritten note in the mail. Now imagine receiving a note (or a series of notes!) previewing or teasing a holiday gift. The Punkpost app, available on iOS and Android, lets you pick a card, type a message and send it in the mail within 24 hours. “For gifting, you can send notes leading up to the holidays with clues,” says Alexis Monson, Punkpost’s co-founder. “Or you could have all the cards sent to you and then you hide in various places to continue the scavenger hunt.” The message is crafted by one of the company’s “handwriting artists.” The cards are $6, and the first card is free.
Puzzled Give the gift recipient clues via puzzle pieces. Make your own puzzle or buy a blank one at a hobby or craft store. You can decorate it with drawings, photos or simply words written on the puzzle. Break it into pieces and give the clues one day at a time. The recipient needs to collect the pieces to solve the puzzle. Say the gift is movie tickets. Each piece holds a clue, such as a photo of a chocolate bar, popcorn, the Hollywood sign, or a picture of the recipient’s favorite actors or films.
Rock It! Kids (and adults) can have fun teasing holiday gifts by coloring and decorating rocks. Go on a family walk, 32 — November 30, 2017
Collecting Clues Here’s a fun idea for the family: Host a scavenger hunt for the kids. On her blog Stuffed Suitcase, Kimberly Tate describes how she creates a holiday scavenger hunt for her children. She starts by wrapping the clue as a gift. The child unwraps the present and reads the first clue, such as, “Games for fun for all, especially for HOLIDAY MAGIC
kids so small. On the PC, they’ll put in a CD, I type in my name on the QWERTY.” Then go room to room, finding clues. You can write your own clues or borrow Tate’s — she has a printable link on her website. She suggests creating as many clues as you want, provided they rhyme! Just remember the last one should lead the child to the present. Want to customize the scavenger hunt for multiple kids? Designate a specific color or envelope pattern for each child. Then the kids can search the house for their specific clues and, ultimately, their holiday gifts. Building Anticipation Opening a present doesn’t last long. But it lasts longer if you dole out the present in installments. For example, if you’re giving your spouse a spa day for Christmas, give a small nail polish one day, bath salts the next, and then, on the holiday, present him or her a robe with the spa gift certificate tucked in the pocket. Check List You’re giving the gift, so make the recipient earn it! Give them a list of things they have to do to get the gift, such as sing a holiday song, compliment someone in the room or share a favorite holiday memory. Make gift giving memorable by mailing a series of handwritten notes to gift recipients, teasing the presents. HERALD COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

any jokes have been shared about the complexity of growing up Jewish surrounded by Christian friends and the overwhelming influence of Christmas come the month of December. But Christmas celebrants are not the only ones with reason to be festive this time of year, when Hanukkah is also cause for celebration. While Hanukkah is steeped in tradition, there are many ways you can add a creative spin to your family’s festivities. Light: One of the major tenets of Hanukkah is how light can shine and lead a person through dark periods. This is typically exemplified by the lighting of the menorah, which is prominently placed in windows or other visible areas of celebrants’ homes. This season spend time with someone who may be dealing with an illness or the loss of a loved one. You may be the light that inspires this person each day. Give candles to friends and family members to symbolize the light that will shine in the future. Oil: Another component of Hanukkah celebrations is the focus on how a one-day supply of oil somehow lasted eight days during the rededication of the temple’s menorah. Think about giving gifts of oil, such as fragrant essential oils that can be used in potpourri or in the bath or shower.
