Dear Readers,

The Herald's Sixth Annual 2025 Premier Business Women of Long Island Awards, presented by RichnerLIVE, was a terrific celebration held on March 19th at the Heritage Club at Bethpage. Over 300 attendees gathered to honor over 50 exceptional women whose professional excellence and community dedication have made enduring impacts across Long Island.

These exceptional women represent the very best of leadership and innovation, helping to forge new paths toward gender equity in the workforce. While we recognize there's still progress to be made on our collective journey to equality, their groundbreaking achievements and pioneering spirit demonstrate how positive change happens through determined action and unwavering commitment.

We were also excited to have Linda Armyn, CEO of FourLeaf Federal Credit Union, as our Keynote Speaker and Trailblazer Award recipient.

Her compelling remarks helped make the event memorable for all.

In keeping with our commitment to giving back, a portion of the proceeds from the event was donated to Hair We Share, an organization providing human hair wigs at no cost to individuals experiencing medical hair loss. The nonprofits's mission to restore dignity and confidence aligns with the spirit of our honorees. For additional information about their important work, please visit hairweshare.org.

At Herald Community Media, we take great pride in our mission to showcase the individuals and organizations that make Long Island a dynamic and thriving community. By celebrating outstanding achievements, we hope to not only honor excellence but also inspire others, nurturing the continued development and prosperity of our communities.

Sincerely,

Q&A

What/Who inspired you to be on the path you’re ontoday?

While I have been fortunate to have had several wonderful mentors throughout my career, I'd have to say that my greatest inspiration came from a more unexpected source. For my first job in Marketing, I interviewed with the head of the department at a large entertainment company. I had researched a problem the company was experiencing, and I prepared a multipage deck with my ideas to help solve it. I presented it to the interviewer, who scanned it briefly and told me that my future was probably not going to be in Marketing. Disappointed, but not defeated, I became even more determined to dedicate my career to the field I love. I went back to school for my MBA, I completed internships, and I continued interviewing. I'm proud to say I've had the honor of working in Marketing for over 20 years. I'm grateful to that first interviewer for motivating me to work hard and challenging me to pursue my dream.

Q&A

What/Whoinspiredyoutobeonthepathyou’re ontoday?

The path I've taken in my career was profoundly shaped by my mentor, Marsha Clementz. When I first started, I had no experience in Compliance, but Marsha taught me everything there was to know. More than the knowledge, she instilled in me a love for the work. Marsha inspired me to seize new opportunities in compliance wherever they appeared. Her dedication and resilience have been a beacon for me. Thanks to her, I've learned to embrace every challenge as a chance to grow and to never stop learning. Marsha didn't just prepare me for a job; she prepared me for a career I love.

Q&A

What/Whoinspiredyoutobeonthepathyou’reon today?

I am on this path today because of my own journey. Having faced many hardships as a child and young adolescent, particularly witnessing my father battle terminal cancer and then seeing my mother in a vegetative state due to medical malpractice, I developed a strong desire to help others from an early age.

What began as a wish to support those around me led me down my own path of healing and ignited a deep urge to serve the underserved and those struggling through difficult life experiences. I never cared or judged anyone’s path, I only wanted people to be heard and seen, which ultimately leads to healing.

Mental health is physical health and I believe strongly in passing that message alone and helping as many people as I can. My hope is that by embodying the spirit of my parents, who were natural helpers, I can assist as many people as possible.

Q&A

What/Whoinspiredyoutobeonthepathyou’re ontoday?

My mom instilled in me a sense of confidence that I could do and be anything I wanted to be as a young child. I soon developed an interest in medicine that was fueled both by the intimate relationships a family doctor could have with their patients, as well as with surgical procedures that could instantly cure or transform. Plastic surgery married both of those aspects in what I believe to be a dream career. My first job out of training, I was employed by another surgeon; I quickly became a sponge, absorbing the ins and outs of how to make a medical practice "run." It was also there where I realized that I needed to define my own practice based upon my personal skills and strengths, and Vandegrift Plastic Surgery was born. Medicine is a practice, and I build on my practice every day from the inspiration and lessons I learn from my patients, colleagues and staff.

Q&A

What has been your greatest achievement(s) withinthepastyear?

For years, my clients sat in my chair, confiding in me, trusting me with their hair, and unknowingly shaping my future. As a colorist, I saw firsthand how much their hair meant to them—not just as a style but as a reflection of their identity and confidence. When they began turning to me for answers about hair thinning and loss, I felt the weight of their concerns and knew I had to do more. Their struggles became my motivation to seek deeper knowledge, to bridge the gap between beauty and science, and to offer real solutions beyond the salon chair. My clients inspired me to evolve, to learn, and to create a space where they would always feel seen, heard, and supported on their hair restoration journey.

Q&A

What/Who inspired you to be on the path you’re ontoday?

My love for seniors started in the fourth grade when my class adopted a woman named Bessie who lived in a local nursing home (fortunately now called an assisted living or senior living community). My teacher took students every week to visit Bessie, and I always signed up to visit her twice a month. She became like a grandma to me. While the experience led me to enjoy spending time with seniors, little did I know that it would also lead to a wonderful career!

Q&A

What/WhoInspiredYouToBeOnThePathYou’re OnToday?

I refer to myself as a “culture lawyer.” As workplace compliance counsel, I have seen first-hand the power of understanding employment regulations and then using that understanding as a tool for creating a space where employees are happy to work. When the workplace is supportive and comfortable with room for employees to grow, business thrives and the risk of unwanted litigation decreases. This hindsight experience has shaped my practice philosophy, leading me to first explore with clients the working environment they envision and the steps we can take to achieve it. We then determine how to overlay compliance with that vision.

iSMASH FARMINGDALE

A woman in business for the second time, Melissa Matassa decided to pursue opening iSmash on Long Island — now in Farmingdale — in January 2023 after reviewing the business plan and visiting the originating location in Rochester. She saw the chance to jump on the opportunity to become the fourth store to sign onto the franchise and bring iSmash here. The iSmash concept enables guests to let loose in a rage room or safely get creative with water-based splatter paint. To date the iSmash franchise has seven stores open nationwide, with another five planned by year end.

Melissa and her iSmash team — including family and friends — create a family environment. She and her staff coaches/teaches at every opportunity, taking the time to explain the whys behind the big picture. She understands the importance of customer service; her team achieved 1k 5 star google reviews in the first year open, the first iSmash to achieve this milestone.

Melissa actively supports woman-owned business; she runs two and has achieved success with both. Her amazing support network — including her husband John, family and friends — enables her to accomplish it all.

Melissa has a degree in business management. She loves watching New York Rangers hockey; her husband's basement has been featured in Newsday and their passionate fandom also has been featured on MSG network.

She holds a Bachelor of Science from Hofstra University and an MBA in Finance from LIU Post.

Q&A

What has been your greatest achievement(s) withinthepastyear?

The past year has been incredibly fulfilling, both professionally and personally. One of my proudest achievements was expanding the impact of Her Long Island Influence, a networking group I co-founded, which continues to bring together dynamic women leaders to foster meaningful collaboration. Additionally, my work with People's ARC of Suffolk and other nonprofits has reinforced my passion for advocating for people with disabilities. Another highlight was leading initiatives that secured crucial funding and partnerships for organizations dedicated to creating opportunities for underserved communities. On a personal note, being recognized with the Herald Top Women Award is an incredible honor, as it represents the culmination of years of dedication to making a difference.

COMMUNITY MAINSTREAMING ASSOCIATES,

Eileen McDonald Egan has served as Executive Director of Community Mainstreaming Associates since 2012, overseeing significant growth, with the organization’s revenue and the number of individuals served tripling during her tenure. Her dedication to creating family-style homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities began in the 1980s after witnessing the deplorable conditions in state institutions and the transformative alternatives created by parent advocates and nonprofit organizations.

Eileen is particularly proud of the advancements in the field, driven by a growing recognition of the talents, rights, and dignity of individuals with disabilities. She takes special pride in the innovative services that Community Mainstreaming Associates continues to develop, responding to the evolving needs of its residents.

Eileen holds a B.S. in Special Education from Southern Connecticut State University, a Master of Arts from Stony Brook University, and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Yale University.

She has served on several provider association boards, including the New York Alliance for Inclusion and Innovation, the Alliance of Long Island Agencies, the Advanced Care Alliance of New York, the Yale Alumni Non-Profit Alliance, and the Foreseeable Future Foundation, which provides opportunities for blind athletes to train and compete in various sports.

Q&A

What/Who inspiredyou to be on the pathyou’re on today?

When I was a teenager, I worked in a couple of the earliest group homes on Long island. At the same time, Geraldo Rivera made the world aware of the horrible atrocities of institutions, where thousands of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities were living. I visited Willowbrook, volunteered at the Suffolk “Developmental Center”, and lived on the grounds of an institution in Connecticut during my junior year as undergraduate. I knew that no one should be living in those facilities and we needed to create alternatives. I have been influenced by many thought leaders in academic institutions, but also by incredibly inspiring Moms and by individuals who have been affected by developmental disabilities and just want to enjoy life like everyone else. I have been privileged to work with amazing, passionate colleagues, and I get excited by talented young people with new ideas. The world is constantly changing and we still have so much to do to make it a happy inclusive place.

What/Whoinspiredyoutobeonthepathyou’re ontoday?

My mother and grandmother inspired me to be on the path I am today. It was instilled into me at a young age that the way to have true independence was through education. If it wasn’t for their support and influence I wouldn’t have been able to get through graduate school.

Q&A

What has been your greatest achievement(s) withinthepastyear?

While running a business with tens of thousands of clients and a staff of over 55 people is an achievement in and of itself, this past year, my partner and I have focused on showcasing our community support, which we plan to continue in the years to come. Stepping outside the business and into the community where we both grew up has been a source of pride for us both.

Who/What inspired you to be on the path you’re ontoday?

It may seem cliché, but the simple answer is my parents. Coming from a household where both of my parents owned and ran their own businesses, and encouraged and supported me in my endeavors, my path today almost seemed like a natural progression. They instilled in me the confidence to own and run a business with strength, objectivity and kindness.

Q&A

What/Who inspired you to be on the path you’re ontoday?

My parents are my greatest inspiration. Growing up we struggled to get ahead and were on food stamps, often getting our meals from the church food pantry... my parents never wavered from hard work and getting themselves out of hard times. Not only showing my siblings and I how to power through difficulties, they instilled honor, love and strength within our family. My parents have since passed, but their legacy lives on through me, my siblings, their grandkids, and in our successes every day.
