GOOD LUCK RED AND BLUE TEAMS!
he Red team is in rare form this year as they look to win their first Red and Blue title since 2019. For weeks now, the girls have been spending most of their time practicing their routines to make sure everything and everyone is prepared for the big three-day event in March.
Red team captains Catie Morgan and Molly Munro said that they have been looking forward to the opportunity to be team captains since they were little kids. And now, at long last, it’s their time to shine.
While organizing a group of nearly 140 South Side High School girls has been no easy feat, Morgan and Munro have fully embraced their leadership roles.
Having been friends since elementary school, their bond towards each other truly embraces the spirit of the competition, which is always just in good fun.
It also serves as a beacon of inspiration for their teammates who have all dedicated hours of their individual time and energy — even during the mid-winter break — to practice all of the skits, songs, chants, and dance moves before the big event.
Showing drive and determination, everyone on the team is hoping that this will be the year they can finally declare “Red Team Victory.”

he Blue team is hoping to extend its winning streak this year, following a “threepeat” performance to take the Red and Blue crown in 2020, 2021, and 2022.
But as the pressure heats up, Blue team captains Maggie Chiffriller and Alayna Marzolini have maintained their responsibilities while keeping calm and collected.
All of the planning and preparation over the past several weeks can be tough, considering they still have homework and class assignments like any other South Side High School student, but Chiffriller and Marzolini have not let that overwhelm them.
For the Blue team captains, the best part of the three-day event is getting to spend time with all of their friends.
But, it’s not all fun and games either. With nearly 140 teammates depending on them, the Blue team has put in a lot of effort over the last three-and-a-half weeks to practice and prepare all of their skits, songs and dance routines for the competition.
Keeping organized and maintaining focus could be the winning formula if they hope for another “Blue Team Victory” this year.
But, whether they win or lose, Chiffriller and Marzolini said that what is most important is that they have a good time making lasting memories with friends and enjoy all of the energy and excitement that comes with Red and Blue.

Red Captain - Catie Morgan
Age: 17 Senior
Morgan is the president of peer mediation — a South Side High school club dedicated to resolving conflict between students within the school. She is also the vice president of the Bethany Buddies Club, a student volunteerbased group for the Baldwin-based emergency women’s shelter, Bethany House. Every Thursday, she and fellow club members spend time with children in the program.
“We do activities with them so they can be cheered up and feel normal for a day or even an hour,” Morgan said.
Between her many extracurriculars and a mix of babysitting, Morgan has been able to juggle her busy school schedule with the nearly 24-hour commitment of being a Red team captain. She said that she has not yet declared which college she plans to attend in the fall, but she also wants study nursing.
“Molly and I have talked about being captains since elementary school, and it’s a big commitment, but it's all worth it,” she said.“We want to make sure that every group is productive. We want to make sure everything's perfect within three-and-a-half weeks.”

Blue Captain - Maggie Chiffriller
Age: 17
Senior
Chiffriller is the vice president of the National Honor Society and the treasurer of the Bethany Buddies Club. She said that while she has not yet declared which college she plans to attend next year, but is looking to study Psychology.
She said its exciting to be so involved in such a fun and time-honored school tradition like Red and Blue, and that spending time with her friends has made the experience one she will always cherish from her time at South Side.
“I really do think I will remember how much I cared for all the people,” Chiffriller said.
Even though graduation is only a few short months away, she has been busy organizing the blue team for the upcoming competition. But most important of all, Chiffriller said, is that everyone participating remembers that this is all just for fun.
“You have to enjoy your time,” she said.“Since we all like each other so much, I think sometimes we forget that (going to school) is not all fun and games and we do have to work. We’ll get too excited, and we have to remember to get back to the serious stuff.”
Red Captain - Molly Munro
Age: 18 Senior
Munro is part of the girls’ varsity lacrosse team and is involved in the Bethany Buddies Club and the spirit club at South Side High School. She said that she has not yet declared which college she plans to attend in the fall, but she wants to study nursing. With the season coming up, she has had to balance her training while maintaining her Red and Blue responsibilities.
“My coaches are amazing and they're very understanding of that,” Munro said.“As soon as Red and Blue ends, lacrosse starts. It’s going to be a very quick turnaround.”
She said that what she has enjoyed most about this year’s Red and Blue is watching the younger students hone their many skills.
"One of the most amazing parts was watching (the younger students) improvement over the past few weeks and how much effort they’re putting into their dances and their songs.”
Munro and her fellow captain, Catie Morgan, have been long-time friends, and getting to be co-team captains for this year's Red and Blue was a lifelong goal.“We’ve lived right across the street from each other and it's something that we dreamed of together,’ she said.“We never thought that we would be together.”
Having to lead a group of nearly 140 girls is a tall task, but Munro embraces the responsibility, likening it to hitting little daily checkpoints to make sure that all the girls stay on task.
Blue Captain - Alayna Marzolini
Age: 18 Senior
Marzolini is the president of the SAFE Club — a student-run organization dedicated to suicide awareness and prevention — at South Side High School. She is also the treasurer of the school's chapter of UNICEF, the international humanitarian organization that helps kids in need all over the world.
She said that her biggest challenge preparing for this year’s Red and Blue event is making sure to stay on top of everything without letting the pressure and the competition overwhelm her.
“At the end of the day 140 girls are still looking up to you,” Marzolini said.“You must always keep it under control and stay organized, even though it’s a lot of work.”
Most of all, she said that she appreciates the camaraderie and excitement the big competition means for her friends and fellow teammates. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, this year’s event promises to be an extremely mean ingful one for Marzolini.
“I’ll definitely remember all the friendships I made,” Marzolini said. With graduation just around the corner, she said that while she has not yet declared which college she plans to attend in the fall, she is looking to study finance.

What is your favorite part of the Red and Blue tradition?
RED - Munro
“One of the main parts is that it brings so many different areas together,” Munro said. “There's the artistic area with the girls who make all the posters. Then there are the song coordinators, and those girls are so musically talented. We have so many talented dancers of all different ages. You meet people, you never would have met if it weren't for Red and Blue.”
RED - Morgan
“The opportunity to be captain and let us shine is so much about the coordinators,” Morgan said.“Whether it's the sport aspect or art and dances, everyone has a purpose in Red and Blue. Giving everyone that opportunity to do what they love to do is so exciting to see.”
BLUE - Marzolini
“You get to work so hard on something, but doing it with your best friends makes it so much more meaningful” Marzolini said.
BLUE - Chiffriller
“It’s really exciting as a senior to be so involved in such a fun activity where you’re with all your friends all the time” Chiffriller said.“It’s fun to do and you make friends in different grades, which makes it a great time.”
What are the biggest takeaways from Red and Blue?
RED - Munro
“We got one year of Red and Blue cut short because of Covid, but we both had three amazing years of Red and Blue, which is why we wanted to become captains,” Munro said.“We've watched our past captains and we want other girls to see why we feel so strongly about it and why it's so important.”
RED - Morgan
“Leadership is one of the most important roles of Red and Blue. Seeing past captains do so well and put together as much as they did to shine and make other girls feel like they're shining, made us want to be captains,” Morgan said.“Making sure that the girls this year also feel that way and have so much fun and cherish the fact that we have a Red and Blue this year, which we couldn't say two years ago. Leaving here is going to be hard but there are so many good things ahead.”
BLUE - Marzolini
“Being able to spend every minute with your best friends is something I'm going to miss a lot,” Marzolini said.“Even though it's hard work. I'm having so much fun. I never want it to end. Even though it's a lot I wouldn't change a thing whether we win or lose. It was perfect.”
BLUE - Chiffriller
“It's really important to cherish our time together,” Chiffriller said.“We got to spend so much more time together. We were all friends, but we never spent this much time together. It's nice to spend this time together before we all go away (to college).”

The heralded tradition carries on into its 107th year
By Daniel Offner
ed and Blue is a long-standing tradition at South Side High School, which dates back more than 100 years.
Originally known as “Girls Sports Night,” the annual competition was held on April 10, 1917. Elsie Spelman, the first woman to serve on the Rockville Centre Board of Education, created the event back during a time when society had expected girls to be quiet and demure. Sports were considered too boorish for young women to participate in, but that slowly began to change as the nation entered World War I and many young men soon found themselves headed off into combat overseas.
But it wasn’t until 1972 — more than half a century later — that girls finally won the right to compete in high school sports. Congress passed Title IX in order to prohibit any discrimination against girls in any school district that accepts federal funding.
Nowadays it’s a well-known fact that girls play sports just as competitively and as ferociously as their male counterparts. However, back in 1917, when the tradition started, it was seen as unseemly. That was what made “Girls Sports Night” such a big deal for Rockville Centre.
It went against the traditional stereotypes and societal values at the time. Some might even argue that it was the first baby step toward helping girls achieve equality on the playing field.
By 1918 the tradition evolved into what has become known across the RVC community as Red and Blue. Girls were divided up into two teams, each selected to represent one of the school colors.
Teams would perform skits and hold relay races all in the name of good fun. It was an instant hit with the community.
At one point, the event had grown so popular that it had to be moved out of South Side High School into the local Masonic Hall, which was the only space around at the
time that could accommodate all of the participants.
It would continue to be held at the Masonic Hall until 1924 when a new South Side High School — now the South Side Middle School — was built on Hillside Avenue. Red and Blue was at first strictly for junior and senior girls only — no boys allowed. Eventually, though, freshmen and sophomore girls were permitted to participate, along with a limited number of boys.
When it started it was strictly a one-night-only affair, but now it’s a three-night-long extravaganza, marking one of the most anticipated high points of the school year. There was a time when the event also included a banquet as part of the festivities, but that eventually came to an end in the 1980s. Even though the basic structure of the competition has adapted to keep up with the times, the enthusiasm behind the Red and Blue tradition never waned.
You can hear their shouts echo across the classrooms, hallways, and locker rooms of the school like a battle cry. “RTV!”“BTV!” You are likely to see these letters displayed on T-shirts and on the front lawns of homes around the community. South Side High School is brimming with excitement for the 107th year of the competition.
Having been victorious for the last three consecutive years, the Blue team will once again try and secure its first team dynasty since the ‘90s. Meanwhile the Red team will give it all they have to try and reclaim the throne for the first time since 2019.
