for Haltemprice & Howden

About Hollie
STANDING UP FOR YOU
Hollie, aged 30, lives in North Cave with her partner, their three children and their pet dog, Elsie. The children all attend local schools. Hollie completed a PhD in medieval history at the University of Hull, where she also taught. She has worked for the NHS based in a West Yorkshire prison and more recently has had several teaching roles in special education in Hull and the East Riding. She specialises in working with disadvantaged children, and her present position is in a post-16 college which prepares young people for employment and higher education.
When asked why she is standing for Parliament, Hollie said: “I am filled with anxiety for the future of our children. We need to protect our children’s education to give them every opportunity to fulfil their potential; we need to protect our NHS because each and every-one of us relies on this vital service; we need to invest in the economy to ensure everyone has the chance to make a living and ultimately, we need to commit to building a better and brighter future for all.”
VOTE HOLLIE THURSDAY 8 JUNE
MY PLEDGES
1
I will fight for local families. Labour will invest in our schools whilst the Conservatives will cut £155,000 per school in Haltemprice and Howden. Fighting Tory policies such as Grammar Schools will be my top priority.
Labour will look after the NHS, ending seven years of Tory mismanagement. Labour will create a national care service, ending the crisis in home care that face everyone in later life. I will fight to ensure mental health care is given top priority.

2
I will fight for our communities, whether that’s opposing Tory cuts to community funding for services such as libraries and parks or ensuring local families have affordable housing. Having a family should not lead to an ever worsening financial crisis.
I will fight for more police officers in our area, with a return to a focus on community policing.

4
The Conservatives have doubled the national debt whilst giving tax-breaks to the highest earners. Petrol pump prices remain high, as do gas and electric bills. Elect me as your MP and I will fight to end political mismanagement of the economy. I will work to bring well-paying jobs and business investment to our area.
I will fight to ensure Haltemprice and Howden gets the best deal from Brexit. We need to ensure that workplace rights are protected and that local businesses continue to benefit from investment that they used to receive from the EU.

ECONOMY
PRIORITIES
In just seven years of government the Conservatives have doubled the national debt whilst giving tax-breaks to the highest earners. Petrol pump prices remain high, as do gas and electric bills. A vote for the Conservatives is a vote for more of the same. Labour promises to protect those on lower and middle incomes by guaranteeing to rule out increases to VAT, income tax for those earning below £80,000 and NI contributions. Labour will create 1 million quality jobs by creating a National Investment Bank that will invest £500 billion in infrastructure and industry. We will do what it takes to make sure UK business thrives. Labour promises to increase the National Minimum Wage to £10 per hour. Only Labour is promising to stand up for working people whilst the Tories have made it clear they are determined to carry on handing out tax giveaways to the wealthy few.
POLICING Under this Tory Government, Humberside police have been beaten by spending cuts and since 2010 has lost 516 Police officers. Nationally Labour promises to recruit 10,000 more police officers, making our streets safer. Everyone has the right to be protected and feel safe in their homes and their communities. We deserve safer streets and better protection from crime.
FAMILIES & HOUSING For families, the financial pressures are higher than ever yet Conservatives have done nothing to alleviate the situation during their seven years in power. Labour pledges to build affordable housing in our area, with genuine support for first time buyers. We will also protect renters by introducing a Tenants Rights Charter: forcing landlords who leave homes in disrepair to be held to account. Labour will also tackle the cost of utility bills and the cost at the petrol pump, even if that means nationalising the current gas and electricity companies. Whilst the Conservatives have been quietly eroding your work place rights, Labour will strengthen them. We will put an end to zero-hours contracts and ensure you have a real voice at work.
EDUCATION Unless the Government allocates more money, schools will lose £3 billion a year in real terms by 2020. In our constituency each school will lose an average of £155,000 a year. Only a vote for Labour will stop these cuts. Labour has pledged to increase school funding and oppose further “academisation” and grammar schools, both of which are failing Tory policies. The situation within higher education is equally dismal: Tory spending cuts have taken away maintenance grants for the poorest and increased tuition fees to a record high, meaning a university education will be available only to those whose families can afford to pay for it. Labour promises to restore maintenance grants, and provide a free higher education system for all.
NHS Faced with continued cuts and privatisation our national treasure, the NHS, is at breaking point. Chronic underfunding of health and social care services, coupled with workforce shortages, is causing increasing stress and anxiety for both staff and the patients they work so hard to care for. Labour will end seven years of Conservative NHS mismanagement and commit to building a strong and secure NHS. Labour will do this by increasing NHS funding, ending backdoor privatisation and reducing waiting lists. We will restore training bursaries for nurses and end the 7 year freeze on their pay. Labour will create a National Care Service that will look after the old and vulnerable. This will end the current inconsistent provision by private companies which sees rushed appointments and care workers put under intolerable pressure.
BREXIT Brexit means that this is a pivotal point in British history and it is vital that we get it right. However, the Conservative government have not disclosed their plans for getting a good deal. What have they got to hide? Locally, we rely on investment and trade from the EU. It is essential that we continue to trade with the EU once we leave. Labour promises to protect these interests and secure the most beneficial Brexit deal possible. You cannot trust the Conservatives to look after our workplace rights. Just three months ago, the Conservatives had the chance to pass a bill into law that would have protected UK workers’ rights, such as holidays and maternity leave. They refused. Only Labour can be trusted to get the best deal on Brexit.
A letter from Hollie Dear Constituent, This election is about more than just Brexit. It’s about fighting against Conservative cuts to primary schools, cuts to our NHS and cuts to local services such as community centres and libraries. That is why I am standing for Parliament in Haltemprice and Howden. I believe the Tory government has let us down on the NHS. How can such a previously well-funded service have fallen into its current state? It is clearly a result of Tory mismanagement. They have put their political ideals above common sense when running the NHS. That’s why waiting lists are up and more hospital trusts are in crisis. I believe that this government has made things harder for young families. For young people, the pressures of day to day life are getting harder and harder, whether that’s finding affordable housing, securing a well-paid, job or dealing with university debt. Things are getting more difficult and the Conservatives have done virtually nothing to help during their seven years in government. I believe the Conservatives are damaging our education system. Did you know that schools in our constituency are facing huge funding cuts? That’s an average of £155,000 per school in our constituency. How many teachers and teaching assistants will our community’s schools lose? I oppose the Conservative plans to bring back grammar schools. Every child should have the right to quality education, regardless of whether they pass the 11 plus! I believe that the Conservative Government will not achieve a good deal for Britain on Brexit. They have already had the chance in Parliament to protect our work place rights such as paid leave and maternity rights, but they refused. Brexit is a pivotal point in British history. In this leaflet I have set out how electing me as a Labour MP will be better for the future prospects of our families and our communities. I look forward to meeting you in the run up to election day Yours sincerely, Hollie Devanney Labour’s Parliamentary candidate for Haltemprice & Howden
