EXPERIENCE

Projects in S|EA’s residential studio are uniquely tailored to the needs and wants of the client and site. Your home is yours, we’re here to listen and design spaces that speak to who you are and how you want to live. With 20 years of experience working in the Pacific Northwest we are mindful of the local climate, landscape, and vernacular architecture, bringing broad experience, inherent curiosity, and sound technical expertise to the particulars of each project. The result is a home that speaks to the client, is sensitive to the site, and will endure for generations to come.

GLASS LINK Portland, OR 7,800 sf The Glass Link Residence is focused inwards, around a central gathering space with private wings to either side. Drawing influence from Japanese design, the architecture and landscaping of the home work together to create harmonious indoor-outdoor spaces. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors blur the line between what is interior and what is exterior, to the minimalist courtyard and a view out to the forest beyond.

HOOD RIVER RESIDENCE Hood River, OR 3,500 sf The Hood River Residence is nestled along the forested edge of Hood River Valley. The linear floor plan takes full advantage of the view of patchwork orchards and Mount Adams to the north. The form is divided into two volumes, a main residence and a guest wing. A concrete wall connects the volumes to each other and to the landscape, while acting as a filter and backdrop for the view. The living rooms of each wing open onto a generous outdoor area collecting the public spaces of the home into one large indoor-outdoor entertaining space.

FIVE PEAKS LOOKOUT Yamhill County, OR 4,500 sf The Five Peaks Lookout sits in the heart of Oregon’s wine country on the northeast slope of Bald Peak in the Chehalem Mountains. The main challenge for the design was to address the client’s wish to take in as much of the expansive five mountain view to the east of Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens, and Mt. Rainier, while at the same time maintaining an intimate connection to the landscape. To accomplish this the home cantilevers out over the valley with the living room, dining room, kitchen, and master suite on the main level and guest quarters below.

MAPLE ROCK RESIDENCE Bonny Slope, OR 6,000 sf Deep eaves, light ledges, and vertical wood screens bolster a sense of privacy and seclusion, and create sheltered areas from the weather and sun. The home’s restrained palette of classic materials - cedar, steel, and glass - and their expressions are connected deeply to the Pacific Northwest and the region’s particular spin on West Coast modernism.

SLABTOWN 4 Portland, OR 5,000 sf Slabtown 4 plays off the history of Portland with two volumes that float on a solid base like a slabwood stack. The project is a new take on an adaptable family home with two main residences for grown siblings and their families, and two ground floor ADU’s for their aging parents. The height of the upper units captures great city views of downtown and to the west hills, while providing for outdoor living areas between each volume. The ground floor units are designed for aging in place and the project was sited to take advantage of city life and walkable amenities.

MUSIC BOX RESIDENCE Portland, OR 6,500 sf Located in the hills above Portland, the Music Box Residence is organized around two volumes with music practice space for the percussionist and pianist owners. The boxes are joined by a glass connector that acts as the heart of the home and a performance space for special events. The design takes advantage of the two-story volume with a stunning roof deck, capturing views of the Portland cityscape and Cascade Range beyond.

HOTCHKISS RESIDENCE Vancouver, WA 2,000 sf This home for a retired couple was designed for aging in place and the climate of the Pacific Northwest. The form is a simple one-story expression of a wood-framed structure. Glass walls combined with deep roof overhangs maximize light and view while shielding summer rays. The great room and deck open up to the Columbia River and views of Mount Hood.

BOX FRESH Portland, OR 2,400 sf The term ‘box fresh’ is used to describe an impressive pair of shoes that are ‘fresh from the box.’ It is also a synonym for something that is new, cool, and innovative. Named by the owner, a member of Portland’s illustrious footwear industry, the residence is designed as an eye-catching blend of Northwest contemporary and mid-century modern architecture. The Box Fresh Residence sits below a large single-sloped roof. The assertive roofline and heavy use of wood and metal float lightly above a large wall of glass, reflecting the yard and trees beyond. Two sliding glass doors retract, letting the interior of the house spill outside onto a large concrete patio for year-round entertaining.

WASHOUGAL RIVER RESIDENCE Camas, WA 7,500 sf Situated on the banks of the Washougal River amongst a forest of fir trees this home blurs the lines between interior and exterior. The main living pavilion is wrapped in glass and opens out to the courtyard and river beyond. The private bedroom wing and lower level lap pool are set adjacent to the main living area creating a backdrop to the outdoor space. A metal structure supports the wood-beamed roof which is milled from trees on the site.

MULLIGAN RESIDENCE Manzanita, OR 2,200 sf The Mulligan Residence features large overhangs, expanses of glass walls, and an abundance of natural indigenous materials such as concrete and cedar. The home’s materiality combined with its spacious and open floor plan blur the lines between interior and exterior spaces, bringing its occupants closer to the beautiful coastal landscape that surrounds the home.

PUMPKIN RIDGE PASSIVE HOUSE North Plains, OR 4,400 sf The Pumpkin Ridge Passive House harnesses the simplicity of passive house design to deliver a comfortable, energyefficient home with minimal added construction cost. The high-performance thermal envelope and attention to detail cut heating energy consumption by 90% compared to conventional construction. Natural building finishes promote healthy indoor air quality and blend the home into the wooded landscape. The project was awarded the 2015 Housing Innovation Award by the U.S. Department of Energy.

BRIGHTWOOD CABIN Brightwood, Oregon 2,500 sf Located in a densely wooded area at the foot of Mount Hood, the Brightwood Cabin sits perched on a small shelf in the hillside. The three-bedroom residence offers a contemporary take on the traditional log cabin. Modern lines, western red cedar, and large amounts of glass work together to create a warm and inviting home that extends well beyond its exterior walls. Oriented towards a southern facing view, the home is capped by a large overhanging roof. This overhang connects the home to the outdoors by creating a covered patio off of the main living space for year-round enjoyment of the site.

JANE’S ORCHARD RESIDENCE Vancouver, WA 2,200 sf The Garden Retreat is the final piece in a years-long effort to transform a beautiful parcel of land in Vancouver, Washington into a cluster of homes and outdoor spaces for three generations of one family with deep Pacific Northwest roots. The Garden Retreat forms the northern boundary of the parcel, shielding itself from the north while opening fully to the lawn and gardens to the south. Family common areas are shared with the owners’ children and grandchildren, who now call this place home. Simple and clean, modern and elevated, the Garden Retreat is shaped to be a true vessel of natural tranquility, cozy solitude, and lively gathering – becoming a home to the current generations, and many more to come.

LEWIS RIVER RESIDENCE Ridgefield, WA 2,450 sf Situated at the edge of a wooded landscape above the Lewis River, this home features an exposed wood structure, boardformed concrete, and walls of glass that frame magnificent views of Mt. St. Helens and beyond. The design hinges around the intersection of two rectangular volumes. One transparent and one solid, the two juxtaposing forms serve to delineate between public and private space within the home.

EUGENE HILLS RESIDENCE Eugene, OR 3,300 sf Anchored to a steep sloping hillside overlooking the rolling hills of south Eugene, this Northwest inspired home is designed to be a timeless jewel box for the client’s growing family. The main level living room and master suite are designed for aging in place while a whimsical popup houses the children’s bedrooms, nestled in the canopies of the surrounding firs. Large glass operable walls open onto a covered patio that creates year round indoor and outdoor living spaces.

CEDAR ISLAND RESIDENCE West Linn, OR 4,200 sf Set against the banks of the Willamette River, the Cedar Island Residence separates the programmatic functions of the home into unique volumes. These volumes are oriented to take advantage of specific views that the site provides. Connected by elevated walkways, the home sits on a concrete base to bring it above the area’s high flood plain.

THE EXPANSE Bend, OR 3,800 sf This family retreat sits lightly on the landscape, featuring sweeping views of the cascade range and open forest to the west. The great room floats above the high desert while the three bedroom suites open to the infinity edge pool. The residence’s form takes cues from the switchback trails common to the area, as the lower level of the home switches back to connect the upper level and rooftop deck.

LONG BEACH RESIDENCE Long Beach, WA 2,800 sf The house is elegantly perched on two concrete piers that raise the living area up above the horizon, providing expansive views of the beach and Pacific Ocean to the west. A floating roof plane extends from the home, sheltering and shading the spaces underneath during the ever-changing weather. A fire pit and outdoor gathering space anchors the east end of the residence, tucked under the living areas above, while an open-air breezeway stores essential outdoor gear and frames the view of the rolling sandscape.

HIGH DESERT HIDEOUT Bend, OR 9,844 SF The High Desert Hideout home is expressive of the Central Oregon desert landscape. SEA’s contemporary design unifies the interior and exterior using natural materials, appropriate massing, and a dialogue with the surrounding environment. This house is designed for all seasons and facilitates the active lifestyle of our clients and their young family. It features a gym wing with a sauna, a detailed backyard with a concrete pool and spa, inviting common spaces, and a second-story home office.
