BRIGHTEN-UP YO U R H O M E ,
EVEN IN THE DEAD OF WINTER BY JULIE ACHTERMEIER
For some, mid-winter is the time to change up the interior décor in favour of brighter hues, but for others, it starts with the first snowfall. While getting cozy during the cold months does have a certain appeal, drab and dreary weather can leave even the most upbeat of us feeling, well, blah. If you want to get ahead of the seasonal drab, here are some inexpensive and low effort tips to brightening up your living space.
ADD COLOUR
Ambitious types may choose winter months to paint an accent wall or redecorate a room, but for most of us, all we need is a quick fix. This is an excellent time of year to add brightly coloured accessories. Warm, energizing colours like bright red, yellow or orange tones can boost your mood while adding a bit of pizzazz. Accent pillows, a new throw for the couch or vibrant painting on the wall all help change the feeling of a room. ADD MIRRORS
Hanging a few stylish mirrors will add depth to a room while reflecting natural and lamplight. Place a mirror opposite a big window or in an area where it’s sure to enhance the interior lighting. Many home décor stores carry a variety of sizes and styles in their painting and wall hanging sections. BRIGHTEN THE FLOORS
Natural hardwood and engineered flooring continue to be popular, yet dark stains can look heavy in the winter. An easy fix is to add a bright throw rug to your living space. Home stores carry a
Canada Campaign 5 87731.29.09.indd 22 Dig.indd 3
variety of colours and patterns and often have spring stock available well before winter ends. ADD MORE LIGHT
Ditch the dark lampshades and heavy curtains in favour of lighter and brighter choices. Find light-coloured curtains or hang sheers to let more natural light in. Lampshades with cut-out designs or with whiter hues will also add more light to the room. Add a floor lamp or a string of LED lights along a mantel or cabinet. If simple changes still aren’t enough, consider adding pot lights or a skylight once you have time for a more significant renovation. BUY FLOWERS
Make it a priority to buy yourself flowers throughout the winter months. Tulips are available as early as February and help invite an early spring into your setting. Find bright colours, exciting varieties and blooms that smell great. Add “flowers” to your weekly grocery list! It’s a small investment that can pick up your mood and perk your spirit.

7 PROJECTS THAT IMPROVE RESALE VALUE Even if you have no immediate plans for leaving your home, it’s a good idea to approach renovations with resale value in mind. Upgrades that are likely to appeal to future buyers protect your investment while also improving your enjoyment of the home. One key to a successful renovation is figuring out how to personalize the space without making it so customized that it’s not attractive to other potential owners. For example, eliminating a bedroom to create a giant walk-in closet may help achieve your dreams, but losing that bedroom can be a major hit to your home’s value. These renovation ideas - which include both cosmetic touch-ups and more labor-intensive suggestions - can help boost your home’s value.
OPEN SPACE. Older homes were often that needs to be relocated. You’ll likely designed with a boxy, formal layout that is less conducive to most modern families’ needs. Today’s open floor plans offer functionality for everything from keeping an eye on the kids while making dinner to entertaining guests. This type of floor plan can also make small rooms feel larger and invite more light into darker parts of the house.
The most cost-effective way to create an open space is to remove non-load-bearing walls (load-bearing walls help support the roof; while they can be removed there’s typically quite a bit more time, labor and expense involved). Removing a wall may not be that complicated unless you encounter plumbing or HVAC ductwork
87731.29.09.indd 6 48 Digest.indd 6 NPM Creative Living
have some electrical outlets to move, and both the floor and ceiling will need attention to remove lingering signs of the former wall.
CLIMATE COMFORT. Not every aspect
of home improvement is visible at first glance like a fresh coat of paint; some value-boosting upgrades are more behind the scenes. One example is climate management. If you renovate a space that needs better climate control, or if you add a new room where extending the existing ductwork is impractical, a splitductless HVAC system may be the perfect solution. The ductless design saves HVAC contractors time during installation, therefore saving homeowners money.

UNDERSTATED ELEGANCE. Features like crown molding and other wood accents such as chair rails are elegant upgrades that can elevate a home’s value with a relatively modest investment. An office or dining room is the perfect place to introduce these design elements to add a bit of formality to the space. You can also find crown molding in spaces like the living room, with the molding coordinating with built-in shelving flanking a fireplace. COLOR CHANGE.
Although paint is one of the easiest ways to personalize your home, it’s also one of the least expensive, simplest ways to improve its value and appearance. A fresh coat of paint, inside or out, can create an appealing illusion of newness no matter the age of your home. For maximum resale value, stick to neutral tones so future buyers can focus on envisioning the place as their own, without the distraction of your own vibrant choices. If you don’t like the thought of boring beige, consider adding accent walls for pops of color that can be easily changed down the road.
ADJUSTABLE LIGHTING.
A room’s ambiance can be completely transformed with lighting. For multi-purpose rooms, an option like dimmer switches lets you customize the lighting to fit the use, which can vary throughout the day. A well-lit living room is essential for a large gathering or a small group gathered for game night. That same space can be equally
87731.29.09.indd 7 48 Digest.indd 7 NPM Creative Living
inviting for an intimate conversation or a casual movie night with the lights turned down low. One of the best parts is minimal experience is needed to swap out standard switches for the more versatile dimmers. Plus, in today’s technology-driven world, there’s an app for seemingly everything, including lighting. Homeowners can control the ambiance from their phones by installing smart light bulbs and lighting strips.
GRUNGE-FREE GARAGE. Even though a garage’s functionality is the top concern for most buyers, a dingy, unkempt space can be a real turn-off. One way to instantly brighten and refresh the space is an epoxy coating on the floor. Applying the coating is relatively easy and once dry it helps prevent unsightly stains and damage in the future. Combine that with a thorough sweeping, wiping down walls and other surfaces, and organizing the clutter to create a more inviting space you can utilize to the fullest. BETTER BATHROOMS. Many homeowners approach a bathroom upgrade with big projects in mind, like swapping out the vanity, replacing the tub or installing tile flooring. However, it’s possible to make a noticeable impact with much smaller changes. Simply updating bathroom fixtures and fittings such as shower heads, faucets, towel racks and lighting can transform the space with minimal effort and far less work and expense than a large-scale renovation. Front Porches With More Than Just Curb Appeal By Julie Achtermeier There's a lot to be said about having great curb appeal but it's a bonus when you can make your front porch, and yard, more functional as well. Following some basic guidelines can make it a more palatable task and ensure the results are stunning.
The first step is to assess your porch's potential, and limitations. While having a full seating area on your porch may sound tempting if yours is small and confined, too much seating may not be possible. You want your porch to be inviting and look like an extension of your home and gardens.
Establish a Connection Between Make the Front Door a Focal Your Porch and Yard. While a specific Point. The trend these days is to showcase
theme is not necessary, a consistent look will create a beautiful flow from your walkway to your front door. Before tackling the porch itself, trim overgrown shrubs and ensure the pathway is tidy and easy to navigate. An abrupt change from your yard to your porch can create harsh lines and look disorganized. An easy first step for blending the porch into the gardens is to use potted plants which give a seamless flow and adds a punch of colour to your front entrance. For homes with rocks, stone or bricks instead of gardens, use window boxes to add depth and pizzazz to your windows and place tall urns with cascading flowers on either side of your front door. Longer walkways can be edged in hostas or low-lying shrubs to add texture while shorter ones should be kept clean and simple.
Be Unique. If you’re searching for a unique feature to add to your front entrance, consider adding an arbour to the walkway, a handpainted welcome sign, a macramé plant holder or wall art. Adding your own unique touches brings a personalized feel and creates a great topic of conversation.

vibrant doors painted a different colour than the garage or shutters. Don’t be confined to the tried and true “safe” colour theme of a white garage door and white front door, or likewise in black or beige. If you have a white garage door and flecks of red in the brick, try a red door. Choose a colour that corresponds with the brick colour while enhancing the existing doors and windows. If a coloured front door is a bit too much change, try adding new wall sconces or an overhead chandelier.
Include a Seating Area. No matter the size of your porch, designers agree that including an area of seating immediately draws a connection between the inside and outside of your home. For a small porch, place a rocking chair with a colourful cushion beside the door. A wide porch on an older house could showcase an old-fashioned looking bench, or a modern set of two chairs and a table can enhance a newer home. Seating is also a great way to encourage you to spend more time outside engaging with your neighbours, or people-watching over a cup of coffee.

REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT WITH FIVE ECO-FRIENDLY HOME PRACTICES By Julie Achtermeier
While the Canadian Government wrestles with the best way to reduce our carbon footprint and emissions as a country, there are many ways we can incorporate environmentally-friendly practices at home. If saving the planet is not enough of a motivator, you are guaranteed to save costs on your electricity and gas bills with a few simple changes.

1
CHECK HOME INSULATION.
The number one cause of elevated heating and cooling bills, and a waste of energy, in general, is inadequate insulation in the home. Check your windows and doors annually, or hire a professional to come in and perform an audit. A full assessment of your home will take about three hours and cost between $300-$500 depending on the size of your house. If you prefer to perform your own audit, check for drafts around windows and doors. Look for significant gaps or holes, and then perform a “smoke test.” First, shut off your furnace and turn on exhaust fans, then close all windows and doors. Hold a stick of incense near each window and door and look for movement. If the smoke pulls out or pushes in, you have a leak. Leaks can be fixed by adding rubber seals around doors and windows or filling gaps with caulking. In some cases, it may be time to replace your windows or doors.
2
ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT.
During the winter months, lower the temperature by one degree and put on a sweater if you are chilly. In the summer, set the temperature to 25.5C while you are awake and in the house. Do not turn off the thermostat while you are away. It takes a lot of energy to bring your home back to average temperature (winter or summer), so set your thermostat slightly warmer in summer, and cooler in winter, if you are going to be away.
3
USE DIMMER SWITCHES AND SWITCH TO LEDS. Both dimmer switches
and LEDs are readily available in Canada. Dimmer switches allow you to control the lighting in your home, thus helping to lower energy consumption.
87731.29.09.indd 11
Lower lights are also much better for tired eyes and add a lovely ambiance to dining rooms, TV rooms and even the kitchen. Combining dimmer switches with LEDs can lead to considerable energy savings. LEDs are 80% more efficient than conventional bulbs and also last much longer. They emit zero to no heat so are safer for the home, specifically in children’s rooms or where you may leave lights on for extended periods. LEDs also come in various shades of white and brightness so you can find the best lighting for your home.
4
MONITOR ELECTRICITY USAGE.
It can be challenging to determine what appliances or electronics are sucking the most energy every month. Some devices can draw a great deal of power even in standby mode. There are devices on the market that allow you to monitor power use throughout your home, and some are offered free depending on where you live in Canada. By monitoring your electricity consumption, you can best determine where and how to lower your energy bills by switching off devices or using some only during off-peak hours.
5
UPDATE YOUR FLOORING. In
need of a flooring update? Consider options that are eco-friendly and offer the best insulation. Wooden floors are excellent insulators, and a simple area rug can provide a cozier feel under-foot. Specific flooring options are recycled or compostable over time, so even if you make a change down the road, they will decompose in landfill or be recycled. Check out bamboo, cork, recycled glass tiles, eco-friendly linoleum and polyester berber carpeting.

PREPARING YOUR HOME FOR AUTUMN: MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR THE END OF SUMMER BY ANITA ALVAREZ
It’s almost time. Sigh. Summer is drawing to a close, like it or not. Before the leaves fall and the wind turns chilly, it’s a good idea to do some seasonal maintenance on your home. Here are some things to add to your fall “honey-do” list.
HAVE YOUR FURNACE INSPECTED. It’s smart to have your heating system serviced before you actually need to use it. Experts say that as much as 75 percent of the calls they receive about homeowners without heat are a result of not having the furnace serviced and cleaned. It will also keep your heating costs down and help keep the air in your home healthy. INSPECT YOUR ROOF. You’ll want to check for shin-
gles that are cracked, buckling, or missing. Check for caulking that needs to be replaced, or moss or lichen, which could indicate deterioration underneath. If you don’t trust your own assessment, work with a certified inspector.
CHECK THE AIRFLOW. Focus on areas like vents, the
hood over your stove, dryer vents, baseboard heaters and room fans. Not only is a buildup of dust a fire hazard, but you also want to keep the air flowing and the allergens at bay.
INSPECT YOUR INSULATION. The most important
area to check is your attic. You should have the highest concentration of insulation here. See if there are any gaps that need to be filled. You don’t need to check the insulation in your walls unless you notice heating issues.
CHECK FOR MOLD. The humidity of summer can cause mold to flourish. Check locations such as around leaky pipes, basements, or areas that don’t get good ventilation. You will want to remove the mold as soon as possible. It’s wise to have this done by a professional. LOOK OVER YOUR SIDING. You’ll want to look for any areas on vinyl siding that are buckled or warped. If you have wood siding, look for curling, splitting or cracking. Should you find an issue, you’ll definitely want it taken care of before the weather gets cold!
GET CONTROL OF GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS. Clogs
MAKE SURE YOUR DETECTORS ARE WORKING. Ensure both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have fresh batteries. It’s smart to test them, also. Both are especially important once your furnace is in use.
REPLACE WEATHERSTRIPPING ON DOORS. There could be gaps that you can’t see and that can jack up your energy costs. It’s a simple fix that can be done with items found at your local hardware store.
Each season brings its own challenges and wearand-tear on your home. With summer ending and autumn on the way, you can go into the new season secure that your home is in tip-top shape!
in gutters and downspouts can cause the roof to leak, which can lead to a host of other problems. It’s a slippery slope from clogged gutters to water damage in your home!
APPLY A FRESH COAT OF PAINT. Interior painting requires good ventilation, so the best time to tackle a paint spruce-up is the time of year when you can open up your windows.
