June is ROTARY FELLOWSHIPS MONTH

This is a project of the Supreme Student Government (SSG) and the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School. When we planned the Brigada Eskwela in April, we also thought of helping students by giving them some supplies they need when classes start in June. The officers of Interact & SSG and our Faculty Adviser requested our sponsor, Rotary Club of Holy Spirit, to donate ball-pens and some school supplies. On June 1 when school started, Interactors, together with the SSG, conducted the distribution of the pens and supplies at exactly 5:00 am for the morning shift and at 12:30 pm for the afternoon shift. We were glad to see the smile on the faces of our schoolmates. We now know why people say, ―It's better to give than to receive.‖

Rotary Information - JUNE 2015 MESSAGES FROM ROTARY LEADERS

RI President’s June 2015 Message

Foundation Chairman’s June 2015 Message

When I began this Rotary year as your president, I wanted us, above all, to Light Up Rotary. I wanted us to share with the world how many wonderful friendships and experiences we have found in Rotary, and how Rotary has transformed and enriched our lives. I knew that by telling others about Rotary, we would increase membership, build stronger clubs, and improve our ability to help people in need. As we end this 2014-15 Rotary year, I am honored by your response and will always be grateful for how you have risen to this challenge. You have answered my call to Light Up Rotary by holding many successful Rotary Day celebrations in your communities; you have outdone yourselves in your contributions to our Rotary Foundation; and you have moved all of Rotary forward with new members and new clubs. When I chose my theme for my year as president, I was inspired by the words of Confucius, who said, "It is better to light a single candle than to sit and curse the darkness." This year, more than 1.2 million Rotarians, along with Interactors, Rotaractors, Rotary Youth Exchange participants, and Rotary Peace Fellows, have lit their own candles in tens of thousands of communities. Together, the lights we have kindled have created a great light that shines for all the world to see. I thank all of you for the opportunity to serve as your president this year, and for the hard work and dedication of our volunteer leadership and our staff members. I came to them with high expectations – and they delivered. I also am grateful for the many friends I have made during this Rotary year, and for the wonderful visits I've had to so many places. I will always remember, with great fondness, riding on the Rotary float in the Rose Parade, watching children enjoy the Japanese drummers at the Rotary Day open house at RI headquarters in Evanston, and bicycling through the night in Colombo during the Ride to Light Up Rotary event, celebrating a polio-free Sri Lanka. I have seen a new energy in Rotary this year, and felt a new excitement. We've seen more and more women and young people join Rotary as well – including my wife, Corinna, and our three children. I hope that in the year to come, you will continue your wonderful work to Light Up Rotary – and to help it Be Gift to the World.

Gary C. K.

Each month, I have tried to highlight various priorities of our organization's largest charity, The Rotary Foundation. They were my own thoughts, but I hope you found them helpful. Our principal goal is the eradication of polio. Some of you may ask why we are still pursuing this when many of your countries haven't had a new case of polio for years. It is important to remember that we gave our word to eradicate polio, but we have not yet done so. We must continue until we finish the job – until all the children of the world are free from this dreaded disease. It is surely the wish in all our hearts that there is peace in our world. Our Foundation is endeavoring to advance this wish with the establishment of Rotary Peace Centers in various parts of the world – a pertinent program in these troubled times. Our Annual Fund goal of US$123 million is still achievable if our giving continues at the same generous level. Every Rotarian should give to the Foundation, each according to his or her means. In my final message, I would like to express my thanks to those dedicated Rotarians who have supported our Foundation during the year simply by doing good in the world. I am always conscious that Rotary is a volunteer organization. The important work of our organization is undertaken by the Rotarians who are helping those less fortunate in their own communities, and in communities throughout the world that they may never even see. I have always deemed it an honor to have been president and trustee chair. Thank you for giving me that privilege. Remember, the future of Rotary is in your hands.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION approves $57,110 Global Grant Project submitted by RC Holy Spirit D3780 and District 3710 Korea to upgrade human milk bank of Philippine Children’s Medical Center Last 28 May 2015, RCHS received the following advise from the Grants Officer of TRF: ―Congratulations! Your global grant application for funding to provide new pasteurizer to Philippine Children's Medical Center in Quezon City, Philippines, submitted by RC Holy Spirit/District 3780 and District 3710, has been approved by The Rotary Foundation. The award is in the amount of US$57,110.‖ The process prior to TRF approval took nearly a year. Officers of RC Holy Spirit first met with officials of the Human Milk Bank of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center (PCMC) last 6 June 2014 to understand their needs. The need for a modern pasteurizer funded by a Global Grant was then discussed by President Dr Bong with the District Governor of D3780 Korea when Dr Bong headed a team for the signing of the club’s sisterhood agreement with RC Sae Gwangju D3710. The outgoing DG of D3710 then signified support for the proposed Global Grant project. Click to read THE DOVE of 24 June 2014.

PP Ped Condeno, Ric Salvador and Percy Zabala first met with Director-Emeritus Dr Gloria Baens Ramirez and the medical staff of PCMC Milk Bank last 6 June 2014.

It was only in early 2015 that the new DG of D3710 confirmed agreement to be the primary international sponsor for the humanitarian project. RC Holy Spirit now stands as the second club in D3780, after RC Timog QC, that has obtained TRF approval for a Global Grant funded project in the Philippines. And as PP Ped sees it, this global grant project elevates the capability of RC Holy Spirit to render Service Above Self one level higher.

Club leaders BCP Marites Nepomuceno, PP Ped Condeno, IPP Dr Bong, PE Angel Castro and Ric Salvador discuss the final draft of various documents required by TRF in the application for global grant last 26 March 2015.

ROTARY’S AREAS OF FOCUS We have identified specific causes to target to maximize our local and global impact. At the same time, we understand that each community has its own unique needs and concerns. Through global grants and other resources, we help clubs focus their service efforts in the following areas. PROMOTING PEACE

SAVING MOTHERS AND CHILDREN

Today, 42 million people are displaced by armed conflict or persecution. Through our partnerships with several leading universities, Rotary Peace Fellows develop the skills to strengthen peace efforts, train local leaders to prevent and mediate conflict, and support long-term peace building in areas affected by conflict. We provide up to 100 peace fellowships per year at Rotary Peace Centers.

At least 7 million children under the age of five die each year due to malnutrition, poor health care, and inadequate sanitation. To help reduce this rate, we provide immunizations and antibiotics to babies, improve access to essential medical services, and support trained health care providers for mothers and their children. Our projects ensure sustainability by empowering the local community to take ownership of health care training programs. Watch how Rotary helps bring health care to mothers and newborns in rural Haiti

Learn how Rotary projects address the structural causes of conflict FIGHTING DISEASE More than 100 million people are pushed into poverty each year because of medical costs. We aim to improve and expand access to low-cost and free health care in underdeveloped areas. Our members educate and mobilize communities to help prevent the spread of major diseases such as polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. Many of our projects ensure that medical training facilities are located where the workforce lives. See how Rotary projects provide low-cost health care PROVIDING CLEAN WATER More than 2.5 billion people lack access to adequate sanitation facilities. At least 3,000 children die each day from diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe water. Our projects give communities the ability to develop and maintain sustainable water and sanitation systems and support studies related to water and sanitation. See how Rotary is building sustainable clean water and sanitation facilities

SUPPORTING EDUCATION Sixty-seven million children worldwide have no access to education and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. Watch how a Rotary grant helps bring tablet technology to students in Fiji GROWING LOCAL ECONOMIES Nearly 1.4 billion employed people live on less than $1.25 a day. We carry out service projects that enhance economic and community development and develop opportunities for decent and productive work for young and old. We also help strengthen local entrepreneurs and community leaders, particularly women, in impoverished communities. See how Rotary helps workers achieve better wages and working conditions

Principles that Guide Rotary The Object of Rotary

The Four-Way Test

First formulated in 1910, the Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

Of the things we think, say or do

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

ROTARIAN’S PLEDGE I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the TRUTH. I am a Rotarian I will always strive to be FAIR in all of my dealings with my fellowmen.

5 Avenues of Service Based on Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotary’s philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club. Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards.

I am a Rotarian I will always endeavor to build GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING in my community, among my countrymen and people of all nations.

International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding & peace.

I am a Rotarian I will always seek to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE.

Youth Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities, service projects, and exchange programs.

I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the Rotary International Motto,

Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Rotary Code of Conduct As a Rotarian, I will 1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities 2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary 3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others 4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings 5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society 6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community 7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians 8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship
