She also emphasized the important role that the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit and its partners, the Rotaractors & Interactors of Holy Spirit, have been extending to Buklod to reach beneficiaries in Payatas. On Dec 22, 2017, the children, their parents and volunteers received gifts and shared food provided by PP Linda and juices from Holy Spirit chair Jerry Sy. INTERACT and SSG of Holy Spirit National High School share priceless gifts - moral lessons and healthy personal practices - through creatively designed gift-giving events By TG President Shane Macabodbod, Interact Club of Holy Spirit guided by M’Beth Auxillo, Faculty Project Bahay Kubo Early in the morning of December 23, the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School conducted the first part of the club’s last project for the year 2017, at the St. Michael basketball covered court along Republic Avenue, Barangay Holy Spirit. This had been a joint project with the Supreme Student Government (SSG) of Holy Spirit National High School As the Interactors of Holy Spirit National High School prepared and served delicious breakfast made from vegetables, they discussed with the children the importance of fruits & vegetables that must be eaten regularly in order to stay healthy. The project was entitled Bahay-Kubo because the vegetables we usually serve in our meals are those are mentioned in the lyrics of the familiar folk song. This project aims to encourage the children to eat fruits & vegetables rather than too much unhealthy food.

Gift-giving Project On December 23, 2017, after having served delicious and healthy breakfast to 50 children, the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School jointly with the Supreme Student Government (SSG) of Holy Spirit National High School, held their annual Gift Giving Project for children residing near St. Michael Covered Court, Republic Avenue, Barangay Holy Spirit. As to break the icy atmosphere, the program started with a game - The Boat is Sinking - purposely to build friendship and emphasize the importance of sportsmanship when competing with others.. As their gift to the 50 children, the youth leaders from the Interact Club and SSG gave them hygiene kits - each containing a towel, talcum powder and cologne. During the distribution, the Interact and SSG leaders discussed with the children the importance personal cleanliness and hygiene practices, such as washing their hands properly before and after eating, so that they stay healthy and avoid being sick.

ROTARACT Club of Holy Spirit shares small kindness to help indigent families experience the magic of Christmas By TG Secretary Jenny T. Lavares, Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit The Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit had successfully conducted it's first Christmas gift giving activity last December 23, 2017 to selected indigent families around Saguingan Area in Republic Avenue, Brgy Holy Spirit, Quezon City. Rtr. Ma. Resha Avelino headed the team of Rotaractors that actually distributed the noche buena packages to the 27 ready-listed indigent families identified with the assistance of the mother of Rtr Markinley Monceda. Each package consisted of spaghetti pack and a kilo of rice. Teams of Rotaractors had been involved in various steps of the project, from buying of goods, to packaging, and distributing the goods to the families. This project became possible by these Rotaractors, who spent their half day giving happiness to the community by giving a small present in this Christmas season: Rtr. Mark Louie Bonquin, Rtr. Rumuel Geronimo, Rtr. Rowell Dela Cruz, Rtr. Van Jeffryl Aficial, Rtr. Rozenne Bonayon, Rtr. Saeralyn Kaye Perez, Rtr. Catherine Patricio, Rtr. Ivy Hernandez, Rtr. Rainer Palmiano, and Rtr. Markinly Monceda. The funds spent in this project had been raised from Club's caroling that happened on the night of December 22,

Year-end Message of the Rotary Club President By TG President Ricardo P. Salvador, Rotary Club of Holy Spirit D3780

Wishing all a happy and prosperous 2018. Let me review with you some of our achievements in the past 6 months. Five of the seven flagship programs of Holy Spirit have been rolled out:

6th year with SPED Center, 7th year of 100 days nutrition program to save lives of 50 severely malnourished Grade 1 pupils, 7th forum on HIV/AIDS and Drug-abuse Prevention, 3rd year of vocational & career briefings for youth, and Monitoring of 2 Global Grant funded projects that we’ve co-hosted

These flagships have been successfully launched with cooperation and support of our members, our benevolent donors, partner organizations and Rotary youth partners, the Interact Club and Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit. The other two flagships shall be launched within the next 3 months as scheduled. At the beginning, I recommended that we discontinue one of the flagships, the 100-day nutrition program, the highest cost item on the menu. Happy that I was over-ruled by our members; now halfway through the voyage, the 50 severely malnourished kids whose lives we’d like to save have gained average weight of 6 lbs and are now all smiling at us.

Salute to Program Champion PP Beth Sy and all project team members including PP Marcia Salvador for the relentless fund -raising drive and our partners, the QCREB. And to the feeding teachers and volunteer parents. We shall also co-host a 3rd Global Grant project for a beneficiary medical center in Cagayan Valley. Our value added in this project transaction is helping provide access to foreign district counterpart courtesy of ASP Peth Rivera.

From advice of RI President Ian Riseley and target set by DG Chito Borromeo for the district, the Holy Spirit team of Rotarians, Interactors and Rotaractors have planted 188 trees since August 5, beyond the target for Holy Spirit which is one for every member of Rotary, Interact and Rotaract clubs. We are elated to report the very significant development in the advocacy project of PP Linda Palattao and Holy Spirit, the weekly learning, literacy and feeding program for 40 to 50 children in the Payatas garbage handling area. The mothers of the kids have now assumed responsibility for teaching & guiding the kids, tasks performed before by visiting students and Rotaractors. Indeed, Rotary has made a difference! We are also very proud that the Interactors of Holy Spirit National High School have started to re-define gift-giving, a favourite of many clubs because giving is very easy to do. Our creative Interactors have made giftgiving ―conditional,‖ inexpensive yet will have profound impact on the beneficiaries. Please read the story in this issue of THE DOVE. This project approximates the value contributed by the trademark Peer-Tutoring program also of our Interactors. Our club has again been given another opportunity to provide large scale humanitarian service. Like the GG project that we sponsored for the Philippine Children’s Medical Center, the third project with Holy Spirit imprint shall likewise save the lives of hundreds of new born infants in Cagayan Valley from Tuguegarao City. Let us help The Rotary Foundation continue doing good to the world by fulfilling our respective pledges. As we do so, we help our club attain EREY recognition. Thank you ! Holy Spirit D3780

Year-end Message of the Rotaract Club President By TG President Lovely Rose Ortiz Paalisbo, Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit, Partner Club of the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit D3780 Greetings of love and peace! Time flies so fast indeed! 6 months have passed and it seems like yesterday. These months were filled of laughter, smiles, and heartfelt memories shared by all members of Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit and those people who have been part of making a difference. Let me share with you the best part of my life. Rotaract is not just a club for me; for it has been my second home and my greatest escape from life’s challenges. In here, I’ve found another company and family to lean on. That is why being part of Rotaract is one of the best things ever happened in my life. There are times that I may be lost, but I always find my way back to Rotaract. I may get tired of drafting our plans and projects, but I won’t (ever) get tired of making others happy. I learned that to be a president, you should balance having a weak and strong heart. A weak one which communicates and understands the need of others, and a strong one that is willed and determined to formulate and implement projects whatever comes in your way, just to see those smiles that flies away all your worries. Behind of all our accomplishments were people who strive hard to make these possible. Words aren’t enough to express my gratitude to all of you who’ve supported and believed in me (us) throughout this year: To TGP Ric, thank you Sir for your patience in listening to all of my worries (or should I say rants), for understanding and for lifting me up when I feel down; To Ma’am Marcia, for guiding us to become a better person, that it’s not charming to hurry, but it’s selfish to be late;

borrow your sound system for our events), thru it we could hear the beating of your generous hearts; To Sir Abet, I remembered when you told me to not be shy to ask you if we needed anything, thank you Sir for your overflowing support; To DRC Tess, Ma’am thank you for all of your words of wisdom; To Ma’am Angel, Sir JR, Ma’am Peth, and to all our dear Rotarians, thank you Ma’ams and Sirs (always) for your unending support and guidance; To our very own DRR Louie Boy De Real, thank you for trusting us, for patting our back, and for inspiring us to become a kind of leader that we wanted to follow; Also, to Gov. Chito Borromeo, it’s still clear in my mind when I have been invited as guest of Rotary in Action segment of Radio La Verdad, on how you motivate us (youth leaders) to become a Peace Advocate, this engraved in my heart and serves as the foundation of how we act and formulate our own initiatives, thank you so much, Gov!; To our partners in service, the Interactors of HSNHS led by TGP Shane Macabodbod, thank you (always) for your assistance; And of course, to my fellow Rotaractors, I may not be that good in expressing my feelings, but I hope this message could reach your hearts, please know that I appreciate all of you, and I always wanted to bring out the best in you. I may be the club’s president, but you guys are the real stars. To Sec. Jenny Lavares, (yes, you deserve another paragraph for this), thank you for all your efforts, for fillin’ up my shortcomings. Lastly, to Rtr. Markinly Monceda, Kins, you may be new to this service, but I saw how you commit yourself to MathScieya, and I am most thankful and proud of you for taking the challenge. It turns out successful because of your dedication. It has been a success not because we finished it with flying colors, but because of the smiles of those students that melt our hearts and their ―kuya, ate, thank you, we’re going to miss you‖. How fulfilling is that right? 2017 was truly a blast because of all of you! Cheers for more months, years of making a difference! Cheers para sa mga ngiting patuloy pa nating mapagmamasdan! J

Year-end Message of the Interact Club President By TG President Shane Macabodbod, Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School, Partner Club of Rotary Club of Holy Spirit D3780

Greetings! Time has gone swiftly like tidal winds, and the first six months of the year has passed. And I, Shane Macabodbod, would like to convey a heartfelt message of my journey as a President of the Interact Club of Holy Spirit National High School. I have learned that being the president of an organization like the Interact club is not easy as it may seem to many. It takes not only knowledge, but also courage and bravery. As I stepped forward to the flowery path that I knew nothing of, I was unaware of the enigmatic adventure I was getting into. I struggled a lot, had experienced challenges I had never expected. I felt like giving up but never did. Realization had struck me real hard, as I saw the people who had put their very effort to go through the road we’re taking, to surpass all the mishaps and mayhem and to achieve our utmost goal. And with that, I would like to express my sincerest and deepest gratitude to those who have shown dedication, to those who have guided me and to those who have put blood, sweat and tears. To our ethereal faculty adviser, Ma’am

Elizabeth Auxillo, Thank You for guiding us through this path we are taking, for being our reliable guardian. We truly appreciate all your effort, Ma’am. To my fellow Interact members, thank you all so much for sticking with me. We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish projects and achieve success without your commitment and efforts. Let us all cherish the moments we’ve been together and maintain the sturdiness of our bond. Thanks also for cooperation from our senior brothers and sisters in the Holy Spirit family, the Rotaractors of Holy Spirit led by TGP Lovely Rose Paalisbo who herself once served as president of Interact. Lastly, I would like thank Ma’am Marcia and Sir Ric Salvador for giving us never-ending patience, inspiration and support. I now appreciate the challenges and insistence on excellence from TGP Ric of RC Holy Spirit, including to prepare this year-end Holy Spirit Interact President’s Message for the first time in our club history that I can recall.. Let us all stay strong and make a difference as we face the year of 2018!

MESSAGES FROM ROTARY LEADERS

RI President’s January 2018 Message In Rotary, our diversity is our strength. This idea dates back to the earliest years of our organization, when the classification system was first proposed. The idea behind it was simple: that a club with members who had a wide variety of backgrounds and abilities would be capable of better service than one without. In the years since, the idea of diversity in Rotary has come to be defined more broadly. We have discovered that a club that truly represents its community is far better able to serve that community effectively. Looking ahead, it is clear how essential diversity will remain in Rotary: not only to strong service today, but to a strong organization in the future.

One of the most pressing aspects of diversity to address in our membership is the age of our members. When you look around at almost any Rotary event, it becomes immediately obvious that the age range in the room does not promise a sustainable future for our organization. Our membership is near a record high, and we are bringing in new members all the time – yet only a small minority of those members are young enough to have decades of Rotary service ahead of them. To ensure a strong and capable Rotary leadership tomorrow, we need to bring in young and capable members today. We also cannot discuss diversity in Rotary without addressing the issue of gender. It is difficult to imagine that just three decades ago, women could not join Rotary. Although we have come a long way since then, the legacy of that misguided policy is still with us. Far too many people continue to think of Rotary as an organization only for men, and that idea has had a detrimental effect on both our public image and our membership growth. Today, women make up just over 21 percent of Rotary's membership. While this is certainly a great improvement, we have a long way to go to meet what should be the goal of every club: a gender balance that matches the balance of our world, with as many women in Rotary as men. Whatever brought each of us to Rotary, we stay because we find value in Rotary membership and believe that our service has value to the world. By building clubs that reflect that world in all its diversity, we will build even more enduring value in Rotary: Making a Difference.

IAN H. S. RISELEY President 2017-18

Foundation Chairman’s January 2018 Message We are at the halfway point of this Rotary year. There is plenty to look forward to in 2018 as we complete the first year of The Rotary Foundation's second century of service. By working in partnership with our Foundation, Rotarians are making a difference in ways we could never have imagined when we began. First, our signature polio eradication initiative continues to bring us closer to the historic day of a poliofree world. Following our tremendous World Polio Day event in Seattle, and the thousands of local events hosted by Rotary members around the world, we are keeping up the momentum to reach this year's polio fundraising goal of $50 million (including District Designated Fund contributions). We are already closing in on that target thanks, in part, to the efforts of Rotarians and friends who participated in the recent Miles to End Polio bike ride to raise funds for the cause. Second, our Foundation's comprehensive fundraising target of $360 million this year will empower you and other Rotarians to continue helping people all over the world. In addition, the Building TRF Endowment: 2025 by 2025 initiative is progressing well. Our goal is to build an endowment of $2.025 billion by 2025 to ensure the long-term financial stability of the Foundation and provide essential resources well into the future. Another emphasis relates to our work in peace-building and the Rotary Peace Centers program. Applications for Rotary Peace Fellowships become available this month. Be on the lookout for great candidates and support our Peace Fellow alumni in the field by inviting them to work with you as advisers on your projects. Between February and June, RI President Ian H.S. Riseley is convening six Presidential Peace-building Conferences, which will showcase the connections between our work in each area of focus and sustainable peace. You are invited to attend! Of course, the biggest event of the Rotary year will be the 2018 Rotary International Convention in Toronto from 23 to 27 June. We will celebrate not only the highlights of this Rotary year, but also the 50th anniversary of Rotaract. In the new year, let us continue to show that we are People of Action! And let the world take notice: We Rotarians are Making a Difference.

CHANGING DEMOGRAPHICS MEAN MORE CHALLENGES Examples cited by THE ROTARIAN Magazine, May 2016

The so-called ―millennials‖ - those born between 1982 and 2000 - are America’s biggest generation ever (more than 80 million).

The increasing age gap in the population has posed challenges to traditional service organizations like Rotary which struggle to recruit a generation of young adults for whom civic engagement and networking happen more easily on a smartphone than at a weekly meeting.

the Rotary International Motto, SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Rotarian Code of Conduct

The Pew Research Center has found that American millennials do tend to share certain traits.

A 2014 report characterized them as ―unattached to organized politics and religion, linked by social media, burdened by debt, distrustful of people, in no rush to marry – and optimistic about the future.‖

They also feel compelled to make a difference in their communities. The Case Foundation’s 2015 Millennial Impact Research Report found that 84 percent of the millennials surveyed had made a charitable donation the previous year and that 70 percent had spent at least an hour volunteering.
