Club Bulletin

November 2020

President's Corner Each Rotary Club is led by its Club President. But more than this, Rotary Clubs are led also by its Past President and Future President in any given year. This institutionalization is core to Rotary leadership. Each year, the Past President guides the current President, while the future President begins to learn early before his/her time. Thus, transitions are smooth, project are sustained, values are developed. In this year of Covid19 Pandemic, we salute the Transforming Presidents of the District because while each one works in his or her community, like one united wave, the District is able to give service that impacts the wider community. Transforming Presidents work ripples to reach the farthest person in need. No pandemic can keep Rotarians from meeting through zoom, learning together online, raising funds, or even bringing relief goods with physical distancing. And in all activities of the Clubs, there is the District Governor serving as a beacon and lighttower. Join me to commend our very own District Governor Johnny Gaw Yu RY 2020-2021, for his unwavering dedication, relentless commitment to hard work much needed during this 2020 that is full of challenges. Amidst catastrophes we continue to face, he remains steadfast and still full of enthusiasm to do more than is called upon. The year is about to be done but not quite yet. My congratulations to the Rotaractors who continue to inspire leaders to work more and work hard. These young generations' energies, insights, creative ideas fuel the district to achieve their goals and continue to push the club to become better. Continue to persevere specially in times of great challenge.

Last but not the least, we again brace our spirits as millions fall victim to ravages of Typhoon Rolly and Ulysses. There is so much service to be done raising funds, delivering food, and giving hope to people who have been weakened with loss of business, loss of home and loss of loved ones. With fervent prayer and trust on the Rotary leaders, its values and traditions, may we overcome impossible tasks ahead. All glory to God. MARTIN MARIǸAS President 2020-2021 RC Holy Spirit is on . .

SERVICE ABOVE SELF

Join me at the 2020-21 Presidential Conferences Posted on October 27, 2020

The Four-Way Test OF THE THINGS we think, say or do

1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotarian’s Pledge I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the TRUTH. I am a Rotarian I will always strive to be FAIR in all of my dealings with my fellowmen.

By Rotary International President Holger Knaack

I am a Rotarian I will always endeavor to build GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING in my community, among my countrymen and people of all nations.

For many years in Rotary, we have talked about the importance of Rotaract and how young people have the potential to reshape our organization. Thankfully, in the last few years we have gone beyond talk and have moved into a time of action.

I am a Rotarian I will always seek to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE. I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the Rotary International Motto, SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Rotarian Code of Conduct As a Rotarian, I will 1) Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life 2) Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect 3) Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world

This has coincided with the world experiencing dramatic change due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our traditional connections and ways of meeting have been disrupted. We have all had to learn how to operate fully in the digital world — the same world that Rotaractors inhabit regularly and naturally. What we are discovering is that Rotaractors are tremendous leaders. This is something I’ve known for quite some time. When it was my turn to host an Institute as a district governor, I turned the entire planning project over to Rotaractors. Not only did they not let me down, they continually delighted me with their ambition and vision. This is why, for my Presidential Conferences in 2020-21, I will showcase the leadership abilities of Rotaractors around the world and give all Rotarians an opportunity to see, first hand, just what they are capable of accomplishing.

The COVID-19 epidemic has made clear that we are living in a different world, a world dominated by young people with the foresight and drive to take advantage of rapid change and move on from the old ways of doing things. Our Presidential conferences will be somewhat like World’s Fairs for Rotary, a vision of our future, with new club models, new ways for members to connect across space and time, and a new vision for a truly diverse organization that builds lasting friendships across generations. I invite you to join us at three events that will be held virtually — and to the extent possible — in person. I invite you to learn more about our three virtual events that will be held 15-16 January in Brazil, 22-24 January in Nigeria, and 14-16 May in the United States.

No matter what your age or experience in Rotary, our conferences are designed to enlighten and surprise you. I look forward to exploring Rotary’s future with you. Learn more about Rotary International President Holger Knaack.

4) Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians

Rotary and partners celebrate a monumental achievement:

African region declared free of wild poliovirus Story Written By: Ryan Hyland

Aug. 24, 2020

The World Health Organization (WHO) on 25 August announced that transmission of the wild poliovirus has officially been stopped in all 47 countries of its African region. This is a historic and vital step toward global eradication of polio, which is Rotary’s top priority.

After decades of hard won gains in the region, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) — WHO, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Gavi, the vaccine alliance — are proclaiming the milestone an achievement in public health. They offer it as proof that strong commitment, coordination, and perseverance can rid the world of polio. The last cases of polio caused by the wild virus in the African region were recorded in Nigeria’s northern state of Borno in August 2016, after two years with no cases. Conflict, along with challenges in reaching mobile populations, had hampered efforts to immunize children there.

In the Philippines Rotary works with WHO, DOH, local government units and volunteers in launching communitywide anti-polio vaccination campaign. Photo shows CSP Abet Sevilla with leads of RC Holy Spirit and RC Midtown Cubao last Oct 15, 2019.

endpolio.org

Now that the African region is free of wild poliovirus, five of WHO’s six regions, representing more than 90 percent of the world’s population, are now free of the disease. Polio caused by the wild virus is still endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan, in the WHO’s Eastern Mediterranean region. The African region’s wild polio-free certification was celebrated during a livestream event. Speakers included Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, Bill Gates, Rotary International President Holger Knaack, Nigeria PolioPlus chair Dr. Tunji Funsho, and representatives of other GPEI partners. The celebration was followed by a press conference. In the program, Knaack spoke about people needing good news during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. “The challenges ahead are formidable,” Knaack said. “That’s why we must recognize this great achievement and commend all the people who played important roles in reaching this milestone. It took tremendous effort over many years.”

An achievement decades in the making Since 1996, countless Rotary members from across Africa and around the world have raised funds, immunized children, and promoted vaccinations, enabling the GPEI to respond to and stop polio outbreaks. More than 9 billion doses of oral polio vaccine have been provided throughout the region, preventing an estimated 1.8 million cases of paralysis. Each year, about 2 million volunteers help vaccinate 220 million children against polio multiple times in Africa. Rotary members have contributed nearly $890 million toward polio eradication efforts in the African region. The funds have allowed Rotary to issue PolioPlus grants to fund polio surveillance, transportation, awareness campaigns & National Immunization Days.

Challenges still ahead The GPEI’s challenge now is to eradicate wild poliovirus in two countries where the disease has never been stopped: Afghanistan & Pakistan. To eradicate polio, multiple high-quality immunization campaigns must continue to be given priority. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s necessary to keep children vaccinated against polio while also protecting health workers from COVID-19 and making sure they don’t contribute to its transmission.

Bearing witness to 75th anniversary of atomic bombings Rotary International By Jaclyn McAlester, Rotary Peace Fellow at International Christian University, Tokyo, Japan create a platform for hibakusha to share their stories to a global audience through a webinar: “Bearing Witness from Nagasaki.” It has been an honor to be a Rotary Peace Fellow in Japan. One of the primary reasons I chose the Rotary Peace Center in Japan to study was because of the unique history here. Japan is the only country to have experienced atomic bombings. Yet, rather than moving forward in pursuit of nuclear capabilities of their own, the people of Japan instead said: never again.

Atomic bomb survivor Michiaki Ikeda speaks during the webinar "Bearing Witness from Nagasaki" there are people who survived. I grew up in New Mexico, USA. I doubt most people think of nuclear testing when they think of New Mexico, but that’s exactly where testing of nuclear devices of the same design as the atomic bombs detonated over Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place. The testing was conducted on 16 July, 1945. Less than one month later, atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August and Nagasaki on 9 August. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the first and only time nuclear weapons of such magnitude have been used in armed conflict. It is estimated that between 129,000 and 226,000 people, mostly civilians, died as a result of the bombings. Most of them likely died the first day. The rest continued to suffer from burns, radiation sickness, injuries, and malnutrition. And yet, somehow, against all odds,

I was incredibly honored when I received an invitation to help organize an event where atomic bombing survivors from Nagasaki would share their testimonies and messages of peace. This event was born from a conversation between Michiko Yokohama, former Rotary Peace Center Coordinator at International Christian University, and Rotary Peace Fellow Florence Maher and driven entirely by the persistence and perseverance of the atomic bombing survivors in Nagasaki. These survivors, known as hibakusha in Japan, most of whom are in their 90’s, expressed their concern about the limitations they faced in sharing their stories this year due to COVID-19. They felt a sense of urgency in sharing their experiences with the next generations. The Nagasaki Foundation for the Promotion of Peace and the Rotary Peace Fellowship Alumni Association partnered together to

Since then, Japan has become one of the world leaders in commitment to nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation. A country and people who experienced unimaginable horror and violence are now active proponents of peace. Every day I spend here, I am in awe of this. I learn just as much about peace from the culture and people here in Japan as I do in my classes. As a Rotary Peace Fellow, an American, and a human being, I felt privileged to play a very small role in facilitating an event for the hibakusha to speak their truths to the world. In a world that continues to seek nuclear weapons, the threat of nuclear warfare and its devastation hangs over all of us like a guillotine waiting to drop. We must listen to these survivors. This may be our last chance. Please watch the recording of the event to hear their voices. As hibakusha Tsuki Shohei said, “please don’t forget this old man’s prayer for peace.” I sincerely hope we can come together to listen, learn, and say, never again. Covid: Spain imposes national night-time curfew to curb infections BBC News Oct 26, 2020 Spain has declared a national state of emergency and imposed a night-time curfew in an effort to help control a new spike in Covid19 infections. Prime Minister Pedro Sรกnchez said the curfew, between the hours of 23:00 and 06:00, would come into force on Sunday. Restrictions on movement between districts would be determined by regional leaders and was likely to be dependent on work and medical needs, he added. The new measures announced include a limit on public and private gatherings of different households to a maximum of six people.

We're still disinfecting like mad. That's good for Clorox By Paul R. La Monica, CNN Business Updated November 2, 2020

New York (CNN Business) It's been seven months since the pandemic hit American shores, but as coronavirus cases rise again, many people are still wiping down surfaces -- and that's continuing to boost sales for Clorox. Clorox reported earnings for its fiscal first quarter Monday that topped Wall Street's forecasts and also boosted its outlook. Overall sales were up 27% from a year ago and Clorox reported double-digit increases in eight of its 10 business units because of Covid-19 and people spending more time at home. Shares of Clorox (CLX) rose 5% on the news. The stock is now up more than 40% this year.

People are using Clorox's namesake disinfectant products to clean household surfaces, cell phones and laptops -- but the company is also benefiting from people cooking more at home instead of going out. That's because Clorox also owns the plastic bag brand Glad and the charcoal line Kingsford. Sales for Clorox's household division, the unit that includes these products, soared 39% compared to last year.

pany expects to last until 2021. Clorox CEO Linda Rendle, who took over as head of the company this summer, said in the earnings release that "our priority remains maximizing the supply of our products — leveraging all available resources to help ensure people can access what they need."

Worried about more shortages, grocery stores are stockpiling goods. The demand for Clorox wipes and other disinfectant products has been so strong that it's led to a shortage that the com16

Zoom overtakes Exxon Mobil in market value amid COVID-19 pandemic Matthew Fox October 30, 2020

Eric Yuan, CEO of Zoom Video Communications takes part in a bell ringing ceremony at the NASDAQ MarketSite in New York, New York, U.S., April 18, 2019. Carlo Allegri/Reuters

Zoom Video has surpassed Exxon Mobil in market capitalization, according to data from YCharts.com. Zoom Video has surged 658% year-todate as the video chat software company saw a boom in business amid the COVID-

A nine-year-old video communication software provider is now worth more than an oil giant that can trace its founding back to John D. Rockefeller's 1870 formation of Standard Oil. In Thursday trades, Zoom Video is now worth $140 billion, surpassing Exxon Mobil's market capitalization of $137 billion, according to data from YCharts.com. The change in fortunes for Zoom and Exxon highlights how swiftly the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the US economy, and life in general. As rolling economic shutdowns swept across the US in late March due to the spread of COVID-19, schools and businesses relied heavily on the video chat software platform from Zoom

19 pandemic. 

Meanwhile, Exxon Mobil has lost 55% in value so far in 2020 as a significant slowdown in air travel and economic activity as a whole has put a dent in the demand for oil.

to conduct daily life in a semi-normal state. This led to a surge in business for Zoom, and helped power its stock higher by as much as 658% year-todate. Within the first three weeks of US shutdowns, Zoom added 100 million new customers, representing a quick double. Exxon Mobil has been on the opposite side of Zoom's good fortunes. The company has lost 55% in market value year-to-date, partly due to depressed oil prices. Demand for oil has taken a hit as air travel nearly came to a halt in March and April, and has yet to recover to pre-pandemic levels. Economic activity as a whole slowed down precipitously, not helping oil demand, and a

supply glut in oil also hurt prices. Exxon is still feeling the pain. The company said today it would slash 1,900 US jobs as it implements a cost-cutting initiative that will see its global workforce shrink by 15% over the next two years. So what could reverse the fortunes for both Zoom and Exxon? According to JPMorgan, a positive COVID-19 vaccine. The firm listed Zoom as a stock to short if the COVID-19 vaccine is developed. A vaccine could lead to a swift return to normal life that would reduce reliance on Zoom video chats and help boost demand for oil as air travel and economic activity bounce back, or so the thinking goes. 17
