Vol. XIII No. 11

Led by TP Martin Mariñas, Holy Spirit supports the milkfeeding program of DepEd that will provide benefits for severely malnourished pupils in the club’s partner school To ensure growth and development and also to boost the immune system of learners during the pandemic, the Department of Education (DepEd), jointly with the Department of AgriculturePhilippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC) embarked on a national feeding program for undernourished children in public schools. Beneficiaries of the program are severely wasted and wasted kindergarten to Grade 6 pupils. Under the program, the beneficiaries will each receive sachets with 200 ml toned carabao’s milk daily for at least twenty (20) feeding days. Apart from DA-PCC, DepEd also collaborates with the National Dairy Authority (NDA) in the implementation of the milk feeding program. One of the elementary schools designated as beneficiary is RCHS’s adopted school, Dona Juana Elementary School

(DJES), where an annual 100-day milk feeding program had been implemented by RCHS for the last ten (10) years. Beneficiaries at DJES in this DepEd feeding program would total 1182. Schools under Congressional District 2 like DJES were scheduled to receive the milk during March 2021 at the designated drop-off point, Manuel L Quezon Elementary School (MLQES) in Barangay Commonwealth. On March 1, 2021, President Martin Marinas went early to MLQES to witness the delivery of the milk by the NDA supplier, Talavera Dairy Cooperative. The delivery of 21 styro boxes each with 170 pieces of200-ml sachets ofchocoflavored carabao’s milk was received by the coordinator of MLQES and checked by the DepEd representative. Also present were DJES Program Coordinator Ma’am Lorna Corre and assistant Ma’am Elvie. After all the neces-

sary paperwork, RCHS arranged delivery of the milk to DJES by the dairy supplier. Distribution at the school was done systematically. Parents of the beneficiaries received the milk packs after getting the learning modules to be used by their children. Minimum health standards were strictly followed during the distribution. As per arrangement, delivery of the milk will be done Mondays and Wednesdays. On March 3, a total of 14 styro boxes each containing 170 sachets of chocoflavored milk was delivered and distributed. On March 8, 2021, in addition to the milk delivered by the NDA supplier, RCHS turned over 16 cartons of pandesal containing 2560 pieces for the malnourished children. Service Projects Chair PP Marcia Salvador assisted Pres Martin in coordinating with the dairy supplier and DJES officials.

Leading bread manufacturer contributes 5000 Pinoy Pandesal for RC Holy Spirit feeding program to save lives of malnourished young pupils in public elementary school.

In the afternoon of March 6, 2021, RC Holy Spirit President Martin Mariñas received 500 packs of Tiffany’s Pinoy Pandesal from Mr Jerry Lao, a friend of Spouse Wivina ‘Vini’ Mariñas. Each pack contains 10 freshly-baked pandesal. Mr Lao is the owner of Sunmaru Confectionery Mfg Corp which has been in the bread industry since 1992. The Tiffany’s brand is now one of the most widely distributed packaged bread and pastries that can be found in ma-

jor supermarkets in Luzon. Sunmaru produces a wide array of products from breads, cakes, pastries and other confectioneries. The donation is very timely for the feeding programs of RC Holy Spirit. Immediately, Pres Martin turned over 160 packs or 1,600 pieces of pandesals to Fr Steve Tynan of St Benedict Parish for the benefit of marginalized parishioners. This happened in the morning of March 7, 2021 after the mass.

The remaining packs shall be given to the beneficiaries of DepEd’s milk feeding program at Dona Juana Elementary School. The beneficiaries total 1,182 severely wasted and wasted (or malnourished) pupils in the school. RC Holy Spirit sincerely thanks Mr Jerry Lao for his generosity, and Spouse Vini Mariñas for this invaluable assistance in the program to save the lives of malnourished children. 2

Holy Spirit supports government’s nationwide program to protect local children from measles In line with the Department of Health’s nationwide efforts to avert a possible measles outbreak, a Measles-Rubella Special Immunization Activity was conducted in the Visayas, NCR and Calabarzon from February 1-27, 2021. This was Phase 2 of the health program. (Phase 1 was conducted in October 2020 in the other regions.)

Dr Eleanor Velasco, Medical Officer at Barangay Holy Spirit requested the support of the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit in coordinating the conduct of the MR immunization activity. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases in the world. Rubella is also known as German Measles. Under the program, children 9-59 months old will be given Measles-Rubella vaccine. This activity was held on February 18, 2021 at the covered court of Don Antonio Heights. The barangay health team was able to inoculate eleven (11) children, considering that homeowners usually

brought their children to their own pediatricians. The medical team had just come from another subdivision in the barangay where only six (6) children were inoculated. PP Marcia Salvador, PN Joy Peralta and Rtn Joey Peralta were on hand to assist, as were two Rotaractors of Holy Spirit who manned the registration desk.

RC Holy Spirit provides voluntary assistance in settling dispute between worker and employer, and among neighbors On February 16, 2021, a housewife from Area 7 at Sagingan (Nawasa) Road in Barangay Holy Spirit sought the assistance of RCHoly Spirit in behalf of her husband Jason who was being given three (3) days to pay his former employer Mr Lubguban or face imprisonment. President Martin Marinas and PP Marcia Salvador met with the couple to discuss the circumstances of the case, after which they requested the help of Barangay Council Kagawad Joemar Lagarto to preside over the discussions between Jason and Mr Lubguban, instead of the Lupong Tagapamayapa. RCHS had suggested to extend the payment period given by Mr Lubguban. The case was one of carnapping. Jason was lent by Mr Lubgubana motorcycle to be used as transport in his work as a mechanic of the latter.

When Jason left his job, Mr Lubguban asked that he return the motorcycle. After months passed and Jason had not returned the motorcycle, his former employer decided to bring the case to the barangay. It was learned during the discussions that the reason Jason could not return the motorcycle was that he had already sold it. Consequently, Mr Lubguban wanted an immediate payment for the vehicle, but was prevailed upon to give Jason until end of February. The discussions ended with an amicable settlement arrangement. As part of RCHS campaign to help prevent crime and sustain peace and order in the community, the club officers Pres. Martin Mariñas and Service chair PP Marcia Salvador visited the CCTV room of Barangay Holy Spirit. Barangay Capt. Chito Valmocina toured the

two RCHS officers and showed them how the barangay CCTV works. The videos showed location, number, and how the CCTV system helps in implementing peace and order in the barangay. With active eyes on the community, bad elements are deterred to do crime and if and when crime is done, the CCTV system will be able to help apprehend the criminals and bring them to justice. Also on February 12, 2021, Pres Martin and PP Marcia helped to pacify neighbors on Don Sergio Street in Don Antonio Heights who were having heated arguments about the drainage problem that causes flooding. Pres Martin recommended a solution to the problem which was accepted by all the parties concerned.

March 2021

President's Corner People all over the world celebrate the month of March with highlighting women’s achievements and importance to society. Many issues are continually discussed such as women’s rights, empowerment, and access to work. But women are always seen as a great source of caring. Rotary Club of Holy Spirit (RCHS) joins this worldwide celebration by nurturing our club and immediate community as seen in the many projects we have done this month.

The club support of feeding programs by DEPED for children through our adopted school is testament to our club’s capacity to nurture our community. I am proud the RCHS community is at the forefront of wellness through nutrition. The nurturing capacity we extend is felt by each’s child’s family members. This effort is many times duplicated as we continuously aim to lead by example.

When the future is very much dependent on today’s youth, well cared for children will truly forward hope for the future. I am very proud to note that even our programs about emergency preparedness, visiting the security systems of Barangay Holy Spirit are also testaments to our goal of nurturing a safe community.

I believe that every month of March, everyone who are able to care for one’s family, for friends, for the planet and for the club is worthy to be celebrated. Happy Women’s Month!
