Vol. XI No. 1

For the 7th year, the new Rotary year is ushered in by Rotarians and Rotaractors of Holy Spirit with SPED pupils, their teachers and parents The Rotary New Year was meaningfully celebrated by RC Holy Spirit on July 6, 2018 with the one hundred three (103) kids of the SPED Center at Dona Juana Elementary School (DJES), their teachers and parents. School principal Dr Alarico Ramos welcomed members of RC Holy Spirit and conveyed his thanks for the club’s support to the school, particularly the

Gloria Tatad, out of 103 special children, 66 are in self-contained SPED classes, while 37 pupils are mainstreamed in regular classes at DJES. These 37 pupils were promoted to regular classes because they are able to academically and behaviorally perform the work in regular classes.

SPED Department. The SPED children and their teachers prepared a program where the students from different classes (Intellectual Disability, Hearing Impairment, Autism, Learning Disability) showed their talents in dancing. They were then treated to fun parlor games with the help of Rotaractors who were more than glad to serve as kuyas and ates. Exhausted but happy after the games, the kids devoured spaghetti & chicken and juice brought by RCHS. In his message, President JR Delgra reiterated the club’s commitment to support the SPED Center’s activities, as well as certain projects of DJES. Also present to cheer up the SPED kids and teachers were PP Linda Palattao, PP Peth Rivera, PP Marcia Salvador, Rtn Jerry Sy and Rtn Angeli Rivera. According to Master Teacher In-Charge Ma’am

The DJES SPED Center is on its 12th year since they started with just 27 special kids.

Holy Spirit, Red Cross and partners conduct life-saving bloodletting activity In line with the week-long celebration of Gov Mar’s birthday through a bloodletting drive, RC Holy Spirit led by Inspiring President JR Delgra organized a bloodletting activity on July 4, 2018 at the Quezon City Hall lobby, in partnership with the Quezon City Red Cross led by Chapter Administrator Amparo Perez. A total of 90 blood donors came to donate; however, only 60 were found eligible after screening procedures. These volunteers came from various stations of the Quezon City Police Department, from Barangay Payatas and nearby areas. Governor Mar Reyes, accompanied by Spouse Chit, graced the occasion, as did Bloodletting Chair Rey Rimonde who came with Spouse Ava. Also joining the activity either as sponsor or as donor were IPs Debbie Guo of North Edsa, Cris Ragudo, of Pasong Tamo Banlat, Vangie Tantoco of Uptown Novaliches, Nash Tayuan of Camp Karingal, Rose Gonzales of Diliman Central, and Natalie Gonzales of Cubao South. During a short program, IP JR Delgra handed over to QCRC Chapter Administrator Ampy Perez a check for P100,000.00 as donation of RC Holy Spirit to the programs of Red Cross

QC Chapter. The donation came from IP JR’s family and friends. A first-aid training featuring Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was discussed and demonstrated by Red Cross specialists. Gov Mar tried his hand on doing the heart massage routine. Present during the July 4 activity were PP Linda Palattao, PP Marcia Salvador, Rtn Jerry Sy and PP Angel Castro who also donated blood. On hand to assist were a team of Holy Spirit Rotaractors. Earlier, on June 16, 2018, a bloodletting drive was also conducted by RCHS led by IP JR in cooperation with Quezon City Red Cross, and with the assistance of Rotaractors led by TGP Lovely Rose Paalisbo at SM City Novaliches. A total of 69 blood bags were collected. The Rotaractors helped convince and recruit mall goers to donate blood. As QCRC Chapter Administrator Ampy Perez said, RCHS is the first club in D3780 to have successfully met Gov Mar’s challenge to have 100 units in blood donated to Red Cross. DIFFERENCES MADE BY HOLY SPIRIT Hopefully Irreversible Valedictory Address of TGP Ricardo “Ric” P. Salvador during the Club Recognition, Induction and Handover Rites

Good evening, my fellow Rotarians, friends, ladies & gentlemen. Will you please join me in another round of applause to recognize the honourees and awardees who have helped Rotary, and the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit, MAKE A DIFFERENCE in the community during the Great Rotary Year that we are now winding down. Thank you. There other important parties, most of them not here, who have supported us MAKE A DIFFERENCE: our partner organizations including the SM FOUNDATION, Don Antonio Heights Homeowners, Barangay Holy Spirit, our 2 partner schools, Offices of QC Goverrnment, St Benedict Pastoral Council, Salamat sa Biyaya Foundation, Buklod ng Panginoon Foundation, and individual donors within and outside Rotary. We also salute them and express our sincere appreciation. For our club which is now celebrating its 13th year in service, it has been another fruitful year of service.

The Great Rotary Year has been characterized by a number of remarkable achievements. We’ve started to make membership in Rotary MORE FAMILY-FRIENDLY, with requirements that are easier to comply with, less expensive.

Alvin will soon be inducted as “active” Rotarian of Holy Spirit. Let me just walk you through briefly some of our accomplishments in community service.

All seven “Flagship Programs” of the club have been launched and completed their voyage for the year. 

6th year program with SPED Center

7th year 100-days milk feeding & nutrition program to save 50 severely malnourished Grade 1 pupils from the fatal effects of malnutrition. This year, they have experienced an average weight gain of 5 lbs as a result of the project.

7th year forum on HIV/AIDS and Drug-abuse Prevention to achieve ZERO incidence among attendees;

10th year large scale diagnostic/medical/dental check-up and treatment of 800 patients, in partnership with SM Foundation and volunteer healthcare practitioners;

10th anti-rabies campaign to save humans from the fatal effects of rabies from animal bites;

Annual tree-planting to help preserve supply of drinking water; and 3rd year vocational briefings and career orientation.

First, we’ve reduced Rotary activities on Sundays, rightfully reserved for family, church, personal commitments.

Then, with Inspiring President Jr Delgra serving as Club Admin chair, we’ve started to adopt “Flexibility Options” now allowed by Rotary International. Two club meetings a month, from 4 in the old practice. We also re-defined attendance measures: physical presence, online, service equivalence, post-meeting updates.

Most of these are “programs” which required component projects or activities scheduled through a year. For example, the Program with the SPED Center started with celebration of new Rotary Year in the first week of July, followed by several other projects/ activities such as disability prevention week, training of SPED pupils in “transition skills.” Christmas program, recognition and moving up events.

In May 2016, just before the Great Year began, we admitted a Rotaractor, Alvin Giray, as “Associate Member” of the Rotary club on a concurrent basis. We expect that

The effort of the club in the SPED program has been to inspire the pupils, their parents and most specially their teachers to strive for excellence and improvement. This year, as in the past several years, 15 to 20 of the 100 SPED pupils are moved to the regular curricula of Dona Juana Elementary School.

Measure of success! 6

Apart from the club’s flagship programs, a number of members are pursuing personal advocacy programs with assist from other Rotarians. These include the following programs: 

Program for street children or care-seekers principally sponsored by PP Angel Castro and Salamat sa Biyaya Foundation; 13th year Program sponsored by PP Linda Palattao for families residing around the Payatas garbage handling area. Program features Weekly learning, literacy and feeding for 50 children, bags & school supplies giving, Christmas program for 100 families, livelihood skills training for mothers and adults;

Dental mission for 50 or more patients at the sub-parish; and

Scholarships and schooling assistance for needy Rotaractors and youth in the community.

Some of the significant episodes in service that occurred in our midst: 

We are elated to report the very significant development in the advocacy project of PP Linda Palattao at Payatas. The mothers of the kids have now assumed responsibility for teaching & guiding the kids, tasks performed before by visiting students and at times by Rotaractors. Indeed, Rotary has made a difference!

We are also very proud that the Interactors of Holy Spirit National High School have started to re-define gift-giving, a favourite of many clubs because giving is very easy to do, and re-do, and re-do for the same beneficiaries as the recipients become increasingly dependent on dole -outs.

Our creative Interactors have made gift-giving “purposive,” inexpensive yet will have profound impact on the beneficiaries. The Interactors decided to educate poor kids of personal hygiene practices to avoid disease. So before distributing gift packs containing soap and hand towel, they first demonstrated proper hand-washing technique and asked some of the kids to do it.

As a consequence of our initiatives, our club RC Holy Spirit has been recognized as being among the 10 Great Clubs in the District of 100 clubs in 2017-18. The 6th from the top. The bigger picture of our major achievements as a club since 2005 

Holy Spirit has joined the small circle of elite clubs in the Philippines entrusted with Global Grants to support large service projects. Since 2013-14, we have sponsored and served as local primary host club of one GG funded lifesaving project for the Philippine Children’s Medical Center, and served as co-host club for two other GG funded projects.

Holy Spirit is one of 200 Rotary clubs in the world, and the only one in District 3780, which participated in the 6-year RI research project on Associate Membership. Then RI Director Guiller Tumangan notes, “Your participation as a pilot club for Associate Membership is a significant milestone not only for your club and District 3780 but also for the country and Zones 7 and 8.”

The now iconic THE DOVE, newsletter of Holy Spirit, has re-invented the way the old, paradigm-shackled club bulletin is designed, written and distributed. THE DOVE, a modern day Rotary newsletter, is easy to create, is readerfriendly, is web-linked, and saves trees as it eliminates the need for trash bins. It’s a consistent winner in “Best Club Bulletin” award.

Those are some of the DIFFERENCES THAT WE HAVE MADE for the benefit of the parties that we serve. We wish that the differences stay irreversible.

Let us celebrate the start of the new Rotary Year, and welcome our incoming, inspiring team of leaders. Thank you very much for your cooperation and support. TGP Ric Salvador President 2017-18 7

I am honored and privileged to become the 13th President of our Club. Looking back over 12 years that the Club has existed, we can be very proud of its accomplishments and achievements, through significant service projects from the beginning up to the present. To all our outgoing officers, championed by our TGP President, Ric Salvador - on behalf of the members and friends of the Rotary Club of Holy Spirit, we would like to thank you for your sacrifices and contributions not only as the Great President but all through the past years that you’ve been serving as an active Rotarian, both in our club and of the District. With a tough act to follow, I am truly humbled, that I am given this privilege to serve as this year’s president of the RC Holy Spirit. I am also humbled to share this opportunity with my fellow Rotarians, as we commit to continue serving our communities through significant service projects and other humanitarian undertakings. As the new RI vision statement says: “Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change, across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves”. I wish to call on every member of this Club, to put into action the new RI vision statement and look at every opportunity, as an opportunity to serve to make a lasting positive change in world. Doing good in Vietnam By Shahul Hameed, Rotary Club of Singapore (District 3310) Posted on Rotary Voices June 21, 2018

close to the Laos border, in the A Luoi District, Thua Thien Hue Province, one of the most affected areas during the Vietnam War. Through the assistance of a Rotary Foundation global grant, a project provided a water supply system and environmental sanitation benefitting 1,252 people in 316 households.

For some of us, it might be hard to imagine life without clean water. We may have suffered the inconveniences of temporary water cuts due to breakdowns or repairs in the water network. And we may have felt frustration after working out at the fitness center if the shower was broken. But those are just minor inconveniences compared to what people in the Huong Nguyen commune live with. Until recently. It takes a drive over many miles through tortuous and bumpy roads to reach Huong Nguyen commune. It is located in a very mountainous region,

The project also enabled construction of 50 hygienic latrines. These play an essential role in keeping waste away from living spaces, which means less disease and better health for all the affected people. It is expected that all these measures will have an important impact in the health of the inhabitants of the commune. But they are also expected to have other impacts. It will no longer be necessary to travel long distances to bring clean water home, saving time for the inhabitants of the commune, time that might be spent in other profitable tasks, increasing the economic prospects of the whole area.

It is difficult to describe the atmosphere in the training sessions where those living in the commune learn about the new facilities and are taught hygiene. The smiles on the faces of the attendees and the laughter of the boys and girls says much about the joy and happiness that Rotary has brought to this poor commune almost lost in the mountains of Vietnam.

Visiting Rotarians teach the children safe hygiene habits.

Riding in a “jeepney” provides rich opportunity to be recognized as a hero by co-riders.

Five Surprising Things You Can Learn when Riding a Jeepney Martin Aguilar,Carmud

Most of us have probably ridden a jeepney. For some, jeepneys are the mode of transportation to get to and from their workplace or school. In my case, jeepneys are one of my means of transport when I was in college – it’s quite hard to budget my allowance if I regularly drove to and from school. Practicality over porma is my mantra. With that in mind, I found out that you can learn useful things when you ride a jeepney – yes, I myself was surprised to decipher this (it’s as if I was able to channel my inner Gandhi). Here are five things you can learn when riding a jeepney.

might miss your stop. It’s not a nice feeling when you wake up surprised and seem to be lost–for sure other passengers will know that you’ve missed your stop. Wow, dyahe. To avoid this, keep in mind to never let your guard down.

2. If there’s there’s a way

a

5. Hold on, you’ll will, make it

This is easier said than done. More often than not, you’ll be amazed at how barkers manage to squeeze-in an extra passenger inside the jeepney. This made me believed that if there’s a will, there’s certainly a way–there’s always room for one more passenger in jeepneys.

1. Honesty is the best 3. Sharing is caring policy In every jeepney, you should always be honest by paying the right amount of fare. Don’t pretend to be a student or a senior citizen just to avail a discount. You should also be truthful when you’re passing or handing down the fare of your fellow passengers. More importantly, approach and talk to the jeepney driver in case you don’t have enough money to pay for the fare – there’s good karma and for sure, some drivers can understand your situation. If they don’t, the best thing to do is to exit the vehicle – better luck next time.

In some instance, you’ll encounter a fellow passenger that’s one or two pesos short to the specified fare. Share some of your loose coins if possible to the troubled passenger–for sure this will brighten up his/her day. In addition, why not treat the exiting passenger (the one mentioned in item number one) to his/her jeepney fare?

4. Never let your guard down

Yes, it’s already given that riding a jeepney involves a bit of danger caused by snatchers. However, the one I’m pertaining to this item is that you should never fall asleep inside the jeepney because you

Though deemed as unsafe and prohibited by law, there’s a good chance that you’ve held on to the jeepney’s bar at the rear (sabit in short) just to get home on time. Watching passengers do this made me realize that you should hold on no matter what because you’ll eventually make it. Riding a jeepney is one of the means of transportation of most Filipinos. However, we all know that jeepneys that we got used to is nearing its final curtain call as the government is determined to push for its PUV modernization program. There’s nothing wrong about the said program, in fact it sounds nice because it doesn’t just make jeepneys safer but makes them more environmentfriendly as well. The only issue that some groups are concerned is that the said program could take away the main source of income of some Filipino jeepney drivers. Nevertheless, let’s hope that the government can find the best solution to address the transition of stainless steel jeepneys to modern public transport vehicles.

A history of the Rotary motto SERVICE ABOVE SELF Rotary News 9 December 2013 Rotary’s official mottoes, Service Above Self and One Profits Most Who Serves Best, trace back to the early days of the organization. In 1911, He Profits Most Who Serves Best was approved as the Rotary motto at the second convention of the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America, in Portland, Oregon. It was adapted from a speech made by Rotarian Arthur Frederick Sheldon to the first convention, held in Chicago the previous year. Sheldon declared that "only the science of right conduct toward others pays. Business is the science of human services. He profits most who serves his fellows best." The Portland convention also inspired the motto Service Above Self. During a convention outing on the Columbia River, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, talked with Seattle Rotarian J.E. Pinkham about the proper

way to organize a Rotary club, offering the principle his club had adopted: Service, Not Self. Pinkham invited Paul P. Harris, who also was on the boat trip, to join their conversation. Harris asked Collins to address the convention, and the phrase Service, Not Self was met with great enthusiasm. At the 1950 RI Convention in Detroit, slightly modified versions of the two slogans were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary: He Profits Most Who Serves Best, and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principal motto of Rotary, because it best conveys the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. He Profits Most Who Serves Best was modified by the 2004 Council to They Profit Most Who Serve Best and by the 2010 Council to its current wording, One Profits Most Who Serves Best.

Interactors and Rotaractors of Holy Spirit internalize the mindset of SERVICE ABOVE SELF as they join Rotarians in serving less fortunate members of the community.

ROTARY FAMILY IN ACTION. Interactor Ace Villocero (serving as head restraint for patient), Rotaractor Rowell Delacruz (shown lighting up the workplace), and Rotarian Dr. Marlene Martinez of RC Holy Spirit D3780 are inextricably bound by passion for service.
