LC Pres JL Torre and Holy Spirit leaders celebrate new Rotary year with SPED pupils, their parents and teachers to renew hope and share joy among all In a very unique way, RC Holy Spirit commemorated the start of the new Rotary Year by holding its traditional children’s party online with the pupils, parents and teachers of the SPED Center of the Doňa Juana Elementary School (DJES) on July 2, 2021. All the pupils virtually “jumped with joy” upon seeing on-screen themselves, their classmates, teachers and Rotarians who have become familiar with many of them The SPED teachers led by Master

Teacher Ma’am Gloria Tatad and Coordinator Ma’am Elsie Dalmacio prepared a delightful program held online via Google Meet platform that included virtual props & décor, a dance presentation, games and raffle draws. The program was emceed by Ma’am Mary Dorothy Tolete, assisted by Ma’am Mary Ann Ducta, Ma’am Marivic Sanchez and Ma’am Maricel Datugan. Ma’am Rhoda Padya-os was unable to join due to her vaccination schedule. DJES Principal Dr Gerry F Sulit thanked RC Holy Spirit for its continuing support to the school and the SPED Center, and

acknowledged Holy Spirit Rotarians to be the most active and hardworking of all Rotarians in Quezon City he has yet met. RCHS President John Lerrie “JL” Torre and PP Marcia Salvador spoke briefly to express their continued support to the programs of the Center. All the SPED classes (autism, hearing impairment, intellectual disability and learning disability) were represented in the virtual program. Some of the children were assisted by their parents/ guardians.

These children are on the printed module system of learning. The teachers schedule online sessions with them occasionally so they can still interact with their classmates and teachers.

LCP JL Torre and PP Marcia in a gallery picture with the dedicated SPED teachers

RCHS officers led by LCP JL Torre prepared gift packs for the children containing items that the pupils themselves have wished for (coloring pens, crayons, whiteboard with eraser and marker, cube puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and blocks). These were individually packed with their names and delivered to the school for pick-up by the parents when they get their children’s learning modules. The gift packs were donated by PP Ric Salvador, PP Peth Rivera, PP Marites Nepomuceno, PE Joy Peralta and PP Marcia Salvador. PP Beth Sy donated snacks, pencils for the children and gel pens for the teachers. PE Joy prepared loot bags to go with the gift packs. Hosting children’s parties sponsored by Rotary clubs had been advocated by the late PRIP MAT Caparas, the first and only Filipino president of Rotary International, as a means to let society know that Rotary cares for the welfare of our youth. It was rolled out in District 3780 by Gov Jess Cifra and the Silver Presidents on July 1, 2011. Since that time, RC Holy Spirit has celebrated every new Rotary year with SPED pupils, except last July 2020, when the club donated school supplies and personal protective gadgets, in lieu of a physical celebration. 2

Rotarians of Holy Spirit share gifts, food and hope as they cheer vulnerable children of indigent families in the former garbage dumpsite area of Payatas Last June 18, 2021 Rotarians of RC Holy Spirit gave school supplies to 27 children of indigent families living around the former garbage dumpsite in Payatas, Quezon City.

For many years until 2019 when the pandemic created by Covid19 set in, the Palattao family who owned a school campus in Payatas, provided assistance to the vulnerable children and their parents. The program advocacy

of PP Linda included weekly learning & feeding sessions and gift-giving during a year. Remarkably, from 2018, some parents of the children have assumed the functions of teaching and mentoring the learners, with some guidance from professional school teachers As in previous years, PP Beth Sy and PP JR Delgra joined PP Linda in distributing the gift items, in cheering on the children and sharing hope and joy with them through a short happy program of activities. PP Beth and PP JR brought some snacks for the kids. PP Linda Palattao, the host of the annual activity, awarded prize money those students who excelled in their school work even during the pandemic environment.

INAUGURAL ADDRESS Thank you everyone, to Governor Ed Ayento and the District Officers, my fellow club officers and Rotarians, it is an extreme pleasure and privilege to have you all today for my inauguration. As you welcome me today, so too do I welcome all of you in a most humble gratitude. I am especially thankful to my fellow Rotarians, who, despite my shortcomings, still gladly welcomed me and gave me this wonderful opportunity to serve as the President of the Club. I am accepting this position as The Life Changing President with both honor and humility. Honored that I am given the position to represent the club, and humbled, that among distinguished individuals, I was chosen to lead. As the incoming President for the Rotary Year 2021-2022, I vow that I will devote my time and effort not only to the club, but to the District as well. I will perform my function with one thing in mind, “Service Above Self”, and the Four Way Test as a guide in doing my duties. During my year, I will strive to accomplish all of our commitments and projects, and of course, to help further strengthen the membership our club, which I believe, can be done. However, I cannot do it alone, as the saying goes, “No Man is an Island”. And as such, I am humbly asking each and every Rotarian Member present that we reach for our goals together, to work together as a team, not only to accomplish our goals, but to strengthen our bonds as a club. I never fully realized the scope of what Rotary does to help and change the lives of people all over the world. In helping other people, while at the same time building relationships and good will to others, such impact, for me, is phenomenal. This is what I see in Rotary as a whole, and you know what, it starts with one club, and one Rotarian. What would I like to see our club do this year? I would love to see a vibrant club, a club where members are united to do actual service, and with this endeavor, again, I am asking each and every Club Members, that we all do this together as a team. I have seen with my own eyes how Rotary works as a whole, and the best example I have seen is my fellow Club Members, I can proudly say, I am among distinguished individuals, and I hope, during my term, that I can be as distinguished as my fellow club members. As Rotarians, we work to promote peace, prevent disease, protect the environment, aid the community, promote education, maternal and child health, and water, sanitation and hygiene. As Rotarians, we can all say, “We have seen that the world needs help, let us offer a hand.” Again, I would like to thank everyone for giving me this wonderful opportunity to become the next President for the Rotary Year 2021-2022. JOHN LERRIE “JL” TORRE President RY 2021-22 Rotary Club of Holy Spirit D3780

VALEDICTORY ADDRESS To my honored guests, friends, and fellow Rotarians, I thank you for joining us this evening to celebrate our 16th charter anniversary and turnover ceremony. I am proud to have been allowed to serve as president for 20202021. Over the years that I have been involved with Rotary Club, and on many community projects specially during this pandemic, I can honestly say that none have been more rewarding than my time with the club. What a great time to be a Rotarian in this globally historic pandemic. When I was about to start my term, when the pandemic started, inisip ko pano ka tutulong kung pandemic? panu ka gagawa ng projects? Matatapos ba term ko nang ganito? Lahat yan tinanong ko sarili ko. How will I serve? Well with the spirit of my Strategic planning team, my service project chair and other members contributed ideas, we came up with a project called OPLAN SOS – Saving Our Savior’s. We were referring to the front liners providing them personal protective equipment and other hygiene for their protection. Then, our students who had to evolve from the face-to-face classrooms to online class cannot afford to buy gadgets so we came up with the project TechnoAid providing them laptops & tablets they needed for their online classes. And then we held the seminar for the youth on livelihood, bloodletting events, implemented awareness programs thru virtual, tulong pangkabuhayan and clean water in Sierra Madre and more. I realized how lucky we were that we had this kind of organization. I was really proud to be a Rotarian because Walang imposible, Walang Dahilan para hindi maka tulong. Iyon ang pumasok sa isip ko. Iyan din naramdaman ko sa mga members ko. We should all be very proud with what we as a club have accomplished this year. We achieved almost all of what we set out to do. I salute the members for being one of the most outstanding clubs in the district of 3780. I wish to thank: Our donors from our Sister Club in Korea, Rotary Club of East Daejon, friends from overseas, donors to SOS, TechnoAid, relief operations, community pantry and many more. Our sisters Rotary Club of Marikina North and Rotary Club of San Mateo Midtown both in RI District 3800. Our Interactors and Rotaractors. For their commitment to our club and for all their support to ensure we had a successful year. For doing what you do so well, which is rising to the occasion when called upon to do so to make the community we serve, a better place for all.

Fr Steve Tynan is chosen as one of eleven awardees for The Rotary Golden Wheel Awards 2021. RC Holy Spirit’s nominee, Fr Steven Tynan, was chosen as one of the awardees for The Rotary Golden Wheel Awards 2021. Fr Steve was chosen for his efforts in Promoting Peace, exemplifying passion, excellence and service in his vocation. Fr Steve believes that poverty and the lack of basic human needs lower people’s resilience to conflict. So apart from his deep involvement in the sacramental ministry, he has helped promote economic development for poor parishioners. He has been making remarkable achievements in keeping peace by developing and empowering potential community leaders, and by swift meaningful actions to relieve people’s sufferings during calamities.

He organized livelihood programs and encouraged productivity and selfreliance to promote peace in the community. Fr Steve also believes that, aside from poverty and hunger, the lack of values and education can potentially lead to conflict. Consequently, the Youth Ministry of St Benedict Parish as well as the parish’s Scholarship Program strongly advocate values formation in their activities. This has resulted in the transformation of a number of street children who were exposed to drugs and petty crimes into becoming responsible, self-reliant and caring individuals.

Johnny Gaw Yu, Rotary Golden Wheel Awards Chairman DGND Paul Angel Galang and Awards Selection Committee Chair of Panel of Judges PDG Sam Pagdilao, Fr Steve was accompanied by RCHS members and officers led by TP Martin. Those present were PE JL Torre, PN Joy Peralta, PP Angel Castro, PP Beth Sy, PP Linda Palattao, PP Marcia Salvador, PP Peth Rivera, PP JR Delgra, Rtn Jovy Andres, Rtn Joey Peralta, and Spouse Vini Mariňas. Congratulations, Fr Steve! Thank you for all that you have done for the community!

Historical Notes. The celebration of every new Rotary year by clubs hosting children’s parties was suggested by past Rotary International 1986-87 president M. A. T. Caparas to show interest of Rotary in children’s welfare and appreciate the service of their teachers Rolled out in District 3780 on July 1, 2011 by DG Jess Cifra and the Silver Presidents, forty Rotary clubs participated in the program initiated by PRIP MAT Caparas, the only Filipino who has become president of Rotary International.

Gov Jess Cifra was assisted by District Public Image Chair LG “Duke” Zuluaga, Paster “Mar” Reyes, a PP of SFDM, and other district officers to get clubs in the district on board the program. SP Eco Capa of RC Kamuning arranged for UNTV coverage.

Pastor “Mar” Reyes, associate editor of the Governor’s Monthly Letter (GML) at that time, prepared the district report on the Children’s Parties program for PRIP MAT Caparas, and an article for the GML. The article of Mar Reyes was published alongside a photo-essay of the event prepared by GML editorin-chief Ric Salvador in the August 2011 issue of the GML.

TRIBUTE TO ROTARY - By pupils and teachers of the SPED Center of Dona Juana Elementary School in Barangay Holy Spirit TRIBUTE TO ROTARY The five teachers and nearly 100 pupils of the SPED Center of Dona Juana Elementary School in Barangay Holy Spirit surprised us during the 1 July 2015 Rotary new year program with this moving “tribute to Rotary,” expressing appreciation for the continuing encouragement and support from RC Holy Spirit. Celebrated annually every July 1st since 2011 during the Silver Year term of SP Ped Condeno and Governor Jess Cifra, the Rotary new year program has since become a virtual part of the SPED calendar. Teachers and SPED pupils prepare and dress up for the event where the children proudly demonstrate their talents and learning to Rotarians, their parents and the audience.

SERVICE ABOVE SELF

The Four-Way Test OF THE THINGS we think, say or do

1) Is it the TRUTH? 2) Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotarian’s Pledge I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the TRUTH. I am a Rotarian I will always strive to be FAIR in all of my dealings with my fellowmen. I am a Rotarian I will always endeavor to build GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING in my community, among my countrymen and people of all nations. I am a Rotarian I will always seek to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE. I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the Rotary International Motto, SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Rotarian Code of Conduct As a Rotarian, I will 1) Act with integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life 2) Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect 3) Use my professional skills through Rotary to mentor young people, help those with special needs, and improve people’s quality of life in my community and in the world 4) Avoid behaviour that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians

By Amy Alipio, TRAVEL assistant managing editor “Happily ever after” may be three of the most satisfying words in the English language. At the end of a fairy tale, the words signal that—despite all the trials and troubles that have come before—all is now well in the world. The stories cast a spell not just on kids. “Fairy tales open up the possibility of transformation in the real world of the reader,” says Dame Marina Warner, a scholar of fairy tales. “Bad things happen, naturally, but this is always overcome—there’s a constellation of encouragement in the very fiber of the fairy tale.” Who doesn’t need a constellation of encouragement in their daily lives? Fairy tales—as well as folk stories and legends—transport your imagination to another world. They can also inspire your family’s real-life travels, from elves in Iceland to a legendary giant on Scotland’s Isle of Skye. I admit to traveling around castle-heavy Wales with the tales of King Arthur as my guide. Later this week, on June 30, a new museum celebrating imagination and storytelling opens in Odense, Denmark, Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown. The museum, H.C. Andersen’s Hus, will stage the author’s fairy tales—which include “The Little Mermaid” and “The Ugly Duckling”— through a “Willy Wonka-like series of com-

plex architectural, sound, and light installations, both inside and out,” writes Mike MacEacheran for Nat Geo. With its “crooked streets, pastel-colored townhouses, royal gardens, and a snow-white palace,” Odense may just be the fairy-tale capital of the world. (Pictured above, visitors take in a performance at the open-air theater on the grounds of Andersen’s childhood home.) But magical tales don’t only come from the distant past. Nat Geo Young Explorer Ahmed Badr is an Iraqi-American poet and former refugee who traveled to Greece, Trinidad and Tobago, and Syracuse, New York, holding storytelling workshops with hundreds of displaced youth. While the Earth Sleeps We Travel is the poignant result, a collection of poems, stories, and art that speaks to the power of storytelling. As Warner says, “Children have so many issues to deal with—from political oppression to climate change to domestic violence—and fairy tales help them hold out hope.” So, as you head out on summer family travels, let your feet wander where your imagination takes you, and, before bedtime, dream up new destinations with a book of myths or legends (also because storytelling has brain benefits for kids). At journey’s end, you’ll find yourself with enduring memories of a most happy vacation, once upon a time. 20

Woman who sold chicharon and mani to put herself through school graduates college Published June 13, 2021 11:56pm

A 25-year-old was able to fund her studies and graduate college by selling chicharon and mani in school. According to Katrina Son’s “24 Oras Weekend” report on Sunday, Jemaima Joy Salas had to find ways to support herself after her parents separated and then after her grandmother, who was helping her, passed away in 2014. “I started selling nuts until I added chicharon so I can support myself because we have limited money and I have no one else but myself,” she said in Filipino. Jemaima said she sold the snacks during break time and dismissal. Fortunately, she had schoolmates who were supportive of her small business.

"Selling in school was a big help to me because it really supported me with my studies," she said. To students who also wish to finish their studies, Jemaima said giving up is not an option. “You will encounter lots of obstacles but this is not a hindrance to reach your dreams. I was once in your place, scared to reach my goals, but I didn’t let it stop me,” she said. Proud of what she has achieved, Jemaima is all smiles in her graduation photo, posing with the food that helped her get through. Congratulations! — Franchesca Viernes/BM, GMA News

She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in entrepreneurship at the Laguna University and now serves as an inspiration to other students. 21

Club turns masks to bricks ROTARY VOICES Posted on July 7, 2021\

Rotaract Club of Dhaka Orchid has been collecting and cleaning used masks and gloves to mix with cement and create new products from the waste.

By Abdullah Al Fahad, Rotaract Club of Dhaka Orchid, Bangladesh The COVID-19 pandemic has presented us with a new environmental challenge. Every month, more than 120 billion disposable masks and gloves are being thrown out, with some of them polluting our land and water. Our Rotaract club, like many, is concerned about the environment. Emboldened by Rotary’s newest cause, protecting the environment, we decided to do something about this problem. We began a recycling effort which we called our Clean Earth project to collect masks that were littering our streets, parking lots, and other common areas and find a way to reuse them. Medical experts have said that the virus can survive up to three days on an object. We place the masks that we pick up in a locked room for three days. Then we bleach them and wash them with detergent over a period of 24 hours. We dry them in sunlight, then tear them into

smaller pieces and mix them with cement. We use this mixture to create planting containers filled with soil, which we plant trees inside.

A member of the club collects discarded masks.

than regular bricks. We are planning to use the bricks to build toilets in rural areas. We are working with other clubs to expand our effort, perhaps creating a recycling center where people could bring their used masks, and we could employ other people to help us turn them into bricks and other products. As much as 13 millon tons of plastic makes it way into our oceans every year. Masks often contain plastics such as polypropylene with a lifespan of hundreds of years. Rotary members are creative and innovative, and we are sure that with some thought, other clubs could join us in finding ways to convert glove and mask waste into usable commodities. Let’s protect this planet of ours while we embrace Rotary’s newest cause. Learn more about how Rotary is protecting the environment.

We have also made bricks with the mixture and find it stronger 22

How much is an elephant worth? Meet the ecologists doing the sums @pgreenfielduk Thu 28 Jan 2021 10.30 GMT Last modified on Mon 8 Feb 2021 13.48 GMT

By one measure, the services of forest elephants are said to be worth $1.75m each. Photograph: Amaury Hauchard/AFP via Getty Images In 1996, Prof Shahid Naeem was part of a team of researchers who set out to value the Earth. Specifically, they were trying to establish the dollar value of all of the “ecosystem services” the planet provides to humans every year. Around $33tn, they concluded, nearly double global GDP at the time. The financial value of ecosystem services is at the heart of much of 21st century conservation, increasingly guiding economic decision-making and government policy. It is on the agenda at Davos this week in discussions about protecting the Amazon and the post-Covid economic recovery, and is likely to be a central issue in UN discussions on a Paris-style agreement on biodiversity to be negotiated in Kunming, China, later this year.
