Food and drinks for the occasion were provided by Ms. Anna Gan, sister of PP Beth Sy. Rotaractor of Holy Spirit Mariel Joy Correa led youth volunteers in the distribution of gifts to the children. Her pleasant demeanor further livened up the joyful event. Friends and family joined in the distribution program. They included former Rotaractor Karz Molina and members of the family of Jerry &

The beneficiaries are children of families in a poor community in Sitio Maliwanag staging area, Western Bicutan, Taguig. Fr Rey Angeles, chaplain of the San Lorenzo Ruiz Chapel has been catering to the spiritual needs of the poor community for the last four (4) years. The small, improvised chapel was miraculously spared by the fire last January 19, 2018 when the winds blew the flames away from the chapel. Learning Curve in Rotary By Rotary International SERVICE ABOVE SELF

The Four-Way Test

Rotary Club of Innovation Hong Kong

2) Is it FAIR to all concerned?

In high school, Alvin Lam was active in Interact and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, but it was Rotaract that turned him into a leader. When he learned in May 2016 that his Rotaract Club of Kowloon North West was shutting down along with its sponsoring Rotary Club of Kowloon North West, Lam and other Rotaractors were disappointed. Then Eugene Fong, 2013-14 governor of District 3450, asked Lam to help charter a new Rotary club.

3) Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Alvin Lam says Rotaract gave him platform to develop and practice personal skill sets and professional knowledge.

OF THE THINGS we think, say or do

1) Is it the TRUTH?

4) Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Rotarian’s Pledge I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the TRUTH. I am a Rotarian I will always strive to be FAIR in all of my dealings with my fellowmen. I am a Rotarian I will always endeavor to build GOODWILL and UNDERSTANDING in my community, among my countrymen and people of all nations. I am a Rotarian I will always seek to promote the greatest good for the greatest number of people in the spirit of ROTARY SERVICE. I am a Rotarian I will always uphold the Rotary International Motto, SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

Lam had previously been a member of the Rotaract Club of City University of Hong Kong when he was pursuing his degree in computer studies. He says he tried to live by the club slogan To Serve, to Learn, to Lead. “I did learn how to lead during my Rotaract service,” he says. “It gave me a platform to develop and practice personal skill sets and professional knowledge.” Lam and Fong got to work recruiting potential members, and today the Rotary Club of Innovation Hong Kong has 21 members who range in age from their mid-20s to mid-40s. They’ve embarked on a number of projects, including support of a district program that works with young people who are homeless. They’ve set up a program using kendama, a type of cup-and-ball toy, to help children with autism build their self-confidence, improve coordination, and develop concentration. They’ve also organized a Rotary information day to help students learn more about careers in everything from mobile app development and e-commerce to digital photography and art therapy.

Today, Lam, 40, is an IT and telecommunications professional with a master’s degree in ebusiness management, and he credits much of his success to his early experiences in Rotary, including his time as a member of the Interact Club at the school formerly known as the Shau Kei Wan Government Technical School. “I was involved in all kinds of Interact activities, including fundraising and community service projects,” he says. Lam is currently his club administration chair and deputy district secretary, and he serves on his district’s innovation, IT, and public image committees. “Rotary is a place where you can learn a lot when you devote yourself to serve,” he says, “and the good will come back to you.” — Anne Stein

In his keynote address, Rotary International President Barry Rassin said, “Service to others is an integral part of our mission, whether it’s through the plans and actions of individual clubs, Rotary’s six areas of focus, or the transformational support of The Rotary Foundation. Rotary is committed to raising $50 million per year, with every dollar to be matched with two additional dollars through a matching agreement with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Including the matching funds, Rotary is committing another US$102 million this year to fund polio eradication efforts in 13 countries. Michel Zaffran, director of polio eradication for the World Health Organization (WHO) presented on the progress and global significance of the initiative. “We’re truly on the cusp of eradicating a disease for only the second time in human his-

Knaack of Ratzeburg said, “I’m honored to have the confidence and support of Rotary’s 1.2 million members,” said Knaack. “As president, I plan to highlight the best Rotary has to offer where people of all backgrounds can see themselves reflected in our service and impact.”

Alongside partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, Rotary has achieved a 99.9 percent reduction in polio cases since spearheading the initiative more than 30 years ago. Since then, Rotary members have contributed $1.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries from polio. “Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinion drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.”

DO SOMETHING TODAY THAT YOUR FUTURE SELF WILL THANK YOU FOR. Cited by Ms Rebecca Lee in her talk with youth leaders during the INTERACT LEADERSHIP ASSEMBLY, December 2, 2017
