Scott Aero Science is a dedicated group of engineers within the Scott organization, while committed to the Scientific Method, are charged with the task of innovating the most aerodynamic bicycles possible. They hypothesize beyond empirical thinking, experiment with new techniques to prove these hypotheses, and always produce data that can be reliably replicated. To prove Scott Aero Science theories, they employ CFdesign software to test concepts virtually before validating designs in the wind tunnel with quantifiable data. Bike designs are additionally tested with mannequins, actual riders, and a number of other environmental variables to ensure that test results accurately reflect real world riding conditions.

PLASMA TT, A NEW DEVELOPMENT PROCESS When the project started, we agreed on a performance specification, including frame geometry, sizes, structural targets and practical issues for usability. The Plasma2 has some unique and original features which make sense aerodynamically. This provided a good starting point to develop the Plasma3 TT for team GreenEdge.

CFD Initially, we resurfaced the whole frame in CAD based on our experience in aerodynamics, and then we used CFD and other analytical techniques to validate various potential solutions. At the same time, the initial concepts were passed back to the engineers so that we could make sure that we could still achieve structural and practical objectives.

Wind tunnel PROVEN
The wind tunnel program was split into two tests so that we could come away from the first test with new data before repeating the whole process. This is what we call in iterative development in the race car industry. To achieve acceptable accuracy, all development parts were manufactured using a rapid prototype process called SLA. The frame is modular so that, individual surfaces can be changed step by step during the wind tunnel test. Each one of these parts can be interchanged, and comparative runs were then made in the wind tunnel to assess the performance.
Our final solution was the culmination of over 300 test runs and almost as many tst parts. It’s imperative that you model the real world conditions in the wind tunnel. At Scott, we’ve seen the future, and it’s about to get faster.

IMP TECHNOLOGY
Our engineers have developed IMP™, the newest technology applied to carbon production. The toptube, headtube, seat tube and down tube are produced in a single step using a top-secret process. Our proprietary process allows for lighter construction by removing 11% of the material from the headtube intersection while increasing strength by utilizing high modulus stressed fibers for more precise fiber placement in critical areas. To compliment the IMP™ process, our frames benefit from our Naked External Tubeset™ which eliminates the cosmetic carbon layer to shave precious grams.
