Welcome

M

any of us moved here for excellent schools, engaging arts and culture, and delectable dining. Impressive and expansive outdoor spaces and friendly community organizations sealed the deal for others. Whatever brought you to this area, whether within the last year or decades ago, we’re glad you’re here. Undeniably, 2020 was profoundly challenging for our community. As we embrace the excitement and optimism a new year brings, we continue to send virtual hugs to local small business owners who have inspired and helped sustain our towns for decades. Our communities wouldn't be what they are without the sense of community fostered by small businesses. At Ridgefield Media, a locally-owned small business, we remain dedicated to delivering Ridgefield Magazine and Wilton Magazine to residents free of charge. We believe in the power of local journalism, and appreciate your kindness and support as we navigate an ever-changing print media landscape. With gratitude,

Ridgefield

Neighborhoods Many of us love Ridgefield’s winding, hilly roads and open spaces, its rural feel, and historic downtown. Our quintessential New England town is not a typical suburban area filled with cookie-cutter houses but instead has distinctive enclaves and several neighborhood associations tucked in between the swaying trees. Ridgefield is home to a handful of pool and lake communities, too, complete with ballfields, clubhouses, swim teams, and social events. There are also small pockets made up of a few streets that offer a true neighborhood feel. Using elementary school districts, and moving from north to south, here’s a guide to these neighborhoods—as well as the little enclaves that exist within each. Enjoy the neighborhood tour.

» Ridgebury Ridgebury covers the northern part of town and borders the city of Danbury. The area consists of open spaces, rolling hills, vast horse farms, and active farmland. Ridgebury is home to Pleasantview Recreational Association (PVRA), what some consider to be the best pool club in Ridgefield. PVRA consists of 225 deeded homes ranging from ranch-style to newer colonials, with a pool, athletic fields, social events, and more. You don’t need to live in one of these homes to join—it is open to outside members—but carries a quite-lengthy waiting list. Turner Hill is located on the Danbury/New York border and consists of 70 homes, built in the mid 1990s on ¼-acre lots. It has a neighborhood pool that is not open to outside mem10 / / Ridgefield + Wilton Handbook

bers. Stone Ridge Estates, just south of the Danbury line, was built in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and boasts 4,000-plus-square-foot homes, each on a little over an acre of land. Rainbow Lake and the surrounding area were developed in the 1930s and 1940s by Willie Winthrop, a developer who envisioned a string of lakes and summer homes here in Ridgefield. Most of Rainbow Lake’s original homes remain, along with some of more recent construction. Rainbow Lake offers residents a variety of social events all year long.

» Barlow Mountain The Barlow Mountain district covers the parts of town known as Titicus and the watershed. It borders North Salem to the north and west, and stretches across part of Route 35, up Limestone and Great Hill

Roads, and into an area known as The Lakes, off Bennetts Farm Road. Mimosa is a recreational community off North Street, bordering Pierrepont State Park to the north, with a pool, athletic fields, social events, and more. Built in the 1960s by Jerry Tuccio, there are 89 homes, each on about one acre of land. Mimosa is open to outsiders for community membership. Twixt Hills is a lake community with private-membership events, including summer beach parties, dinner club, and winter ice skating. It is located on Pierrepont Lake and is another Tuccio neighborhood developed in the 1960s. The watershed of Lake Mamanasco covers an area of 537 acres and contains about 440 homes. The lake is the center of many recreational activities, including swimming, fishing, sailing, and ice fishing. The major beach located on the western

Ridgefield is a town that cherishes history, but does not get stuck in it. shoreline is the Mamanasco Beach Club, operated by the Eight Lakes Community Association.

» Scotland The Scotland district covers part of the southern portion of the Titicus area, lower North Street, parts of the Route 35/ Danbury Road corridor in town, and the West Mountain/Barrack Hill area. West Mountain Estates is on the west side of town, near the New York border, with 160 acres of homes built in the mid-1970s through the mid-1980s. Most West Mountain homes are traditional New England colonials with some ranch-style homes mixed in. A few luxury homes have been added over the years. West Mountain's amenities rival other pool communities in town.

» Veterans Park Known as VP, this school district covers the village/downtown area of Ridgefield. There are small streets and cul-desacs that offer a neighborhood feel and are walkable to Main Street. It also includes the Silver Spring area, bordering Lewisboro and is home to the Silver Spring Country Club and historic Peter Parley School. Located just west of downtown, between Peaceable Street and Barry Avenue, is Westmoreland, another Tuccio neighborhood.

» Farmingville This district in the mid-eastern section of town borders Route 35 to the north, Redding to the east, and includes the Lounsbury area. Farmingville was previously all farmland and is still home to the Hickories, a family-run, organic farm that dates back over 100 years and covers more than 100 acres. Small neighborhoods in this area include Norrans Ridge, Stonehenge Estates on the Ridgebury/Redding line, just off Route 7, and Walnut Grove and surrounding streets.

» Branchville This area covers the southeast part of town and borders Redding and Wilton. It includes the Branchville train station and several shops and restaurants along Route 7. Branchville’s winding roads, small streets, and scenic areas make this a picturesque place to live. Nod Road is a designated scenic route that leads to the Weir Farm National Historic Site. Many small neighborhoods are tucked off Branchville Road, while the largest and most established neighborhood in the Branchville district is Twin Ridge, a neighborhood in the southeast corner of Ridgefield with 130 homes covering some 200 acres. The first Twin Ridge home was built in 1964, with the last two lots developed in 2002. Twin Ridge holds year-round social activities for children and adults.

stops at the Cannondale Station, but the area is better known for its small shops and businesses adjacent to the station, including The Schoolhouse at Cannondale restaurant. Diners there enjoy their meals in what was the second schoolhouse built in the neighborhood in 1872.

Cannondale

The Silvermine section of Wilton has been known as an artist community since the early 1900s. A visionary sculptor named Solon Borglum moved to the area in 1906 and contributed to the artist movement there. Solon’s depictions of frontier life, especially sculptures based on his experience with cowboys and native Americans established his reputation. His was a subtler artistic path than his brother Gutzon and nephew Lincoln, who sculpted Mount Rushmore. Today the arts are still very much alive in the area thanks to the Silvermine

Originally called Pimpewaug by the local Native Americans, Cannondale was named after the Cannon family who became prominent in the area following the opening of their general store in the 1790s. The addition of the railway station came next, followed by a campaign by the Cannon family to open a neighborhood post office. Cannon Station was soon abuzz with activity. Today, the Metro-North Danbury branch continues to make

The recently renovated Comstock Community Center, which houses the Wilton Senior Center, the Parks and Recreation department, and Wilton Social Services is also situated along this stretch. There is free parking and access for walkers, runners, dogs on leashes, naturalists, and fishing enthusiasts, to the scenic wooded route down to Merwin Meadows. Beyond the school district are residential neighborhoods made up of both historical and newer homes.

Georgetown

North Wilton

»

Encompassing parts of Wilton, Redding, Ridgefield, and Weston, Georgetown is a community unto itself. Its history revolves predominantly around the Gilbert & Bennett wire mill, which had its beginnings in the early 1800s. By mid-century, G&B, as it was known, had four locations and was home to the country's first machine for making wire netting and fencing. The foundation of one of the buildings can still be seen from Old Mill Road. Today, Georgetown’s manufacturing roots have been replaced by more than half a dozen restaurants, shops, the Georgetown Farmers Market, Caraluzzi's Market for groceries, and other businesses which make it easy for residents to meet their needs without traveling south to Wilton Center.

and Sperry Andrews. An indoor and outdoor attraction, it offers spring through fall indoor tours of the on-site house and studios, yearround hiking trails, and specialized spring through fall programs. For true outdoor enthusiasts, the Wilton Town Forest, with entrances off Boas and Branch Brook Roads, offers 192 acres of natural beauty, many hiking trails, streams, and even a picturesque waterfall.

»

Take a trip through North Wilton on July 4 and you'll see why this rural part of town has the community feel of days gone by. The Nod Hill Fourth of July Parade travels for less than a mile but draws crowds each year who cheer for elaborate floats made by their neighbors and friends, then gather for an old-fashioned picnic, complete with sack races. North Wilton is also home to the Weir Farm National Historic Site, which was featured in Ken Burns’ documentary series The National Parks: America’s Best Idea. It is the only National Park Service site dedicated to American painting and was the home (and inspiration) for artists Julian Alden Wier, Mahonri Young,

South Wilton

»

Bordering Norwalk, South Wilton is a commercial hub frequented by those working in the area’s many office complexes, or shoppers seeking larger retailers like Outdoor Sports Center. Despite the hustle and bustle of Route 7, there is natural beauty to be found here as well. Cranbury Park and Gallaher Mansion is a breathtaking space featuring 227 wooded and open acres frequented by hikers, dog walkers, and those looking to play disc golf on its 18-hole course. The course is laid out over acres of lush New England woodland. The Gallaher Estate Tudor revival mansion is a stunning snapshot of history, built in 1930 and meticulously maintained as a modern event venue. Whether working, shopping, hiking, dining at a wide variety of cuisines from Asian to Italian—South Wilton has much to offer. —KAREN SACKOWITZ Ridgefield + Wilton Handbook 15

In a space above the restaurant 850 Degrees Wood Fired, RPAC Art Center and Academy has large studio space—available for rent in parcels to artists. It is a fully equipped studio, with private and open workspaces, and an upscale computer room for graphic design, digital arts, and research. “Whether you are a working artist, emerging artist or student, our curriculum and independent study courses will expand your practice and build a body of work suitable for portfolio use and career enhancement,” says owner Dee Dee Colabella, who opened the center in 2019. On Main Street, Colabella opened the RPAC Gallery, featuring quality works by local artists on display for viewing and purchase. Guest artists are featured on a regular and rotating schedule. A Fresh Look THERE IS NO SHORTAGE of food in Ridgefield or Wilton, and certainly no shortage of fresh and organic options. Aptly named, Nature’s Temptations greets shoppers with expansive offerings of fresh, often locally-sourced, 100 percent organic produce. “We are not a supermarket, but we're more than a health food store. We are here to help. When people have problems with allergies or diet, etc., we have answers about eating the right food,” says owner Jeff Konchalski. As it says in the name, Ridgefield Organic & Specialty Market, located in The Marketplace near Copps Hill, offer seasonal varieties of organic and locally sourced fruits and vegetables, plus soups, salads, freshly squeezed juices, and smoothies. In Wilton, The Well specializes in well balanced and delicious whole food cleansing. The Well believes, quite simply, in good health through good food. Their gourmet takeout menu includes organic and natural items, and daily specials accommodate vegan, paleo and gluten free diets. —GEOFFREY MORRIS

To Swimfinity & Beyond SWIMFINITY SWIMMING ACADEMY in North Salem attracts parents and caregivers from throughout Fairfield & Westchester counties for good reason; Swimfinity guarantees kids will be swimming independently and with confidence within weeks. Swimfinity’s survival swim classes teach children as young as six months how to save themselves by mastering the rollback-to-float sequence. "I built Swimfinity on the belief that every child should be provided lifesaving skills while developing a love for swimming," said founder Ali Sisca. "Our goal is to empower children while boosting self-esteem and building confidence," Sisca continued. Survival swim classes are individual private lessons, and instruction is tailored to each child’s skill and comfort level. Children may transition into group lessons once they've mastered survival swimming. And of course, their facilities are state of the art; their salt water pool is gentler on skin and eyes and the water is warmed to 90 degrees for a comforting and comfortable in-water experience. swimfinityacademy.com —AMANDA DUFF

Farm Hands WILTON’S 200-YEAR-OLD AMBLER FARM, situat-

ed on Hurlbutt Street, offers a six-month educational “apprentice” program, specially designed for local students enrolled in grades five though 11. It typically runs from May through October, with the apprentices meeting several times a week. The students provide hands-on labor, caring for the live animals at the farm, as well as running Saturday’s farm stand The older apprentices teach the younger children about farm activities. Ambler Farm’s vision is a restored and self-sustaining entity that provides the community with a place to connect with the land, and the town’s agrarian past through hands-on educational programming, sustainable farming in harmony with nature, animal husbandry, and community activities. amblerfarm.org —CHRIS CAPELLE

Art in the (National) Park WILTON AND RIDGEFIELD'S WEIR FARM, one of

two sites in the National Park Service devoted to the visual arts (along with SaintGaudens National Historic Site in Cornish, N.H.) offers myriad ways for artists—of all ages and skill levels—to create art “en plein air.” Weir Farm encourages and nurtures artists in many ways, from providing free art supplies through its Take Part in Art program, as well as offering formal Impressionist Painting Workshops and its annual Art in the Park Contest and Festival. In addition to the programs provided, artists are encouraged to bring their own supplies and paint on park grounds year-round. The Artist-in-Residence program has (to date) hosted over 200 worldwide artists. They spend one month living and working at the park. Visual artists apply for residencies in all media and from diverse artistic points of view. 203-834-1896 —CHRIS CAPELLE

On Your Marks, Get Set, Go! RUNNING IS A GREAT EQUALIZER OF A SPORT. Slow, fast, long, short – there are no limitations on who can call themselves a runner. It doesn’t require a lot of gear – good shoes and socks at the minimum – and as long as your moving, it counts. As American running great Kara Goucher said, “It doesn’t matter how fast or far you’re going. If you’re putting on your shoes and going out for a run, you’re a runner, you are in that club.” The running community here is strong and at its heart is Megan Searfoss, owner of Ridgefield Running Company (423 Main Street) – one of the Top Ten Running Stores in America. Searfoss opened sister store Darien Running Company in 2020. Not only does Searfoss' team utilize a 3D scanner, a digital walk mat, and video analysis for a comprehensive foot evaluation for each customer, they also offer many training plans – for everyone from beginners to seasoned marathoners. Ridgefield Running Company's motto, that the journey through life is about constant forward motion is reflected in its logo, which includes the triskelion, a Celtic symbol with three legs that represents continual movement. They host group runs of varying distances and paces every Saturday morning, and they also host events such as the Frozen Feet Challenge, which encourages participants to run or walk at least one mile outside for six weeks – all with the goal of getting people to move, however they can. Thankfully for runners, this area offers a multitude of places in which to run. If sidewalks and streets are your preference, there are several routes that leave from Ridgefield Running Company. The Ridgefield Rail Trail,

32 / / Ridgefield + Wilton Handbook

a nearly 2.5 mile gravel trail, is also a great spot, as is the Norwalk River Valley Trail. The latter will eventually be a 30-mile, 10-foot-wide trail that runs from Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk through Wilton, Ridgefield and Redding, ending at Rogers Park in Danbury. Currently, sections in Norwalk and Wilton are open. Additional trails to check out include: Mountain Lakes Park, which can be accessed through Sturges CT Trailhead or from Sal J. Prezioso Park in North Salem; Lake Windwing, Bennett’s Pond and Pine Mountain Loop in Ridgefield; and Leon Levy Preserve in Lewisboro. The Ridgefield Walk Book, available at Books on the Common is a great resource for more tips about areas conducive for running and walking. Once you’ve put some miles in, it might be time to set a goal. Signing up for a race is a great way to challenge yourself and to celebrate your progress. Every May, The Run for the Cows at New Pond Farm in Redding offers 7 and 13.1 mile options and even a race for kids. Race director John McCleary says, “It’s a great race that showcases our town (Redding) and raises money for the farm.” Well-known runners often participate; Bill Rodgers runs every year. Kara Goucher and Joan Benoit-Samuelson have also toed the starting line. Run Like a Mother (5K) held in Ridgefield, inspires women to lace up their shoes on Mother’s Day. Finishers received a medal and a rose. Other fun races include: Redding Running Festival (5K) in late June/early July; Margarita Run (5K) in August; Where the Pavement Ends Trail Race in September; Ridgefield Half Marathon in October; and The Great Turkey Escape (5K) on Thanksgiving. —JULIA BRUCE

Your Shot

THE ONLY SUNSETS WE DON'T LIKE ARE THE ONES WE MISS. Lucky for us, photographer Chris Mantz of Photos on the Fly captures incredible sunsets (and sunrises!) throughout Fairfield, Litchfield, and Westchester counties. Mantz, a photographer, videographer, and drone pilot, shares his photos via his Instagram account, @photosonethefly. He snapped this photo at North Salem's Titicus Reservoir, saying, "On the way to pick up my daughter at the end of a cloudy, cold, snowy day I saw the sun peak through the clouds during the last few minutes of daylight. I immediately pulled off on the side of the road to snap this shot. It was a great reminder for me to try and appreciate the little victories and enjoy these fleeting moments. This photo brought me to a happier place the moment I took it." It brought us happiness the moment we saw it! For a chance to be featured in "Your Shot," hashtag your Instagram photos with #RidgefieldWiltonMags and tag us at @RidgefieldWiltonMags. —AMANDA DUFF 40 / / Ridgefield + Wilton Handbook
