KANDHAT

“When the going gets tough, the tough take a nap.” — Tom Hodgkinson — Project Theme : Portable Sleeping Space Year : 2020 Work length : 8 weeks Size : 8 m2 Instructor : Yosephine Sitanggang, S.Ars., M.Ars.

Kan·dhat -> rest [sanskrit]

(v) cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength (n) an instance or period of relaxing or ceasing to engage in strenuous or stressful activity In Sanskrit, Kandhat means to stop and rest. Both meanings correspond to the subject’s condition that stopped from work and took a break to unwind. Design form is taken from Subject’s sleeping position while observation. Subject slept while sitting on a street vendors’ chair. His hand help his head while he’s asleep so actually this position is not really comfortable because the head was hanging having nothing to lean onto. This project objective’s to design a portable sleeping space. So not only the design needs to be able to be slept on according to the subject’s actual sleeping position, but also the design has to be able to be wrapped, unwrapped and carried away easily.

Subject observation was done at pasar lama tangerang. There we could find people selling their products such as snacks, drinks, and outfits. There are several things that needed to be observed such as where they slept, how they slept, movements while they’re sleeping, and everything that related to their sleeping habit.

Poduct Description

The subject is a parking attendant. He didn’t have a special space for himself to rest during work. He had to depend on other people's space. So as the design’s respond, the design must be able to be carried easily wherever the subject moves. There was only every few moments the subject's head seemed to "fall off". This is dued to an uncomfortable hand position to support the head while sleeping This design idea originally came from the windmill pattern where there is one central point and there are blades that go around it. In terms of portability, this design is similar to the concept of a sling bag where there is a rope to attach the design to the body.

ANALYSIS

OUTDOOR THERMAL

The annual wind direction tends to come from the south and southeast with an average speed of 2 - 3m/s. The design maximize the direction of the wind so that the design can receive natural wind circulation. The design area’s quite good in making a crater on the floor, this can create wind rotation in the podium which is good for the design

These wind conditions may be better by laying trees and vegetation in the design which can break the wind and improve ventilation in the design area.

Ca-ra-ne pe-ni [sanskrit] (n.) scenery

(adj.) beautifull

Carane Peni is taken from the Sanskrit language. Carane means scenery, while peni means beautiful. So Carane Peni mainy represents the word "beautiful scenery". Carane Peni explains about the site condition which is on the beach so that it has the advantage of a view from site which has a beautiful view of the sea. There are many considerations while the design process. A lot of analysis and site responses are needed since the unique site conditions ranging from sandy soil types, uneven ground contours, strong winds, and direct sunlight to the building. Around the site there are several coconut trees as natural buffers but these trees are not sufficiently hump to support the negative conditions of the site, therefore the design needs to responds the convenience of clients.

Located on a non-tourism beach, site is being separated from the citizens area to keep the client’s privacy. But still, design responds according to some considerations to maintain social and natural relationships with the environment.

Ridho was an 4th semester architecture student. His family consists of 4 people: father, mother, brother, and ridho. This house is specially designed to respond to the wants and needs of clients. So first we gathered some information about what the client wants and needs, and we made some design responds that would be applied to the home design.

Cooking area is the place where father and mother usually spend their time together. Father likes to smoke while mother’s cooking, therefore a window is placed next to the kitchen as a circulation of wind for cigarette smoke. There is a kind of curtain wall also on the side of the kitchen wall so that clients can view the beach while in the kitchen.

Parking Area and Entrance

The access point becomes elevation point 0 in the design. Entrance access is in an area with an elevation that is not too steep so that car can access it easily. Brunchetta serves bunch menus such as egg benedict, potato salad, cakes, and many more. Project owner has a special request regarding the design concept, which is sustainable. Sustainable here has the meaning of a restaurant that can maximize natural conditions so as to minimize energy use, and also the design does not have a bad impact on the surrounding environment.
