Inspiring Flourishing Lives to Transform Our Globe.

From our Headmaster DEAR FRIENDS OF RIDLEY COLLEGE,

Ridley College is as healthy and as strong as at any other point in the school’s history. We began the 2015 – 2016 school year with a series of extraordinary accomplishments: the school’s largest enrollment, the most diverse student body in its history, our lowest student attrition in decades, a record fundraising year and an admissions waiting list for our boarding programme.

We didn’t get here by accident! That progress and success grew out of years of planning, dedicated work and a series of ambitious strategic initiatives contained in our Strategic Plan: Inspiring Flourishing Lives – Transforming the Globe.

The vision, values and investments of our families, faculty and alumni have worked together over decades to position Ridley College as one of the top independent boarding schools in North America. We could not have arrived here without the drive and dedication of so many – students, teachers, parents, staff, alumni, and friends – who all put their trust in the school’s shared vision for success: inspiring young men and women to lead meaningful and flourishing lives.

Thank you to all of our generous and loyal donors who continue to believe in the legacy of a Ridley education. Their generous gifts will have an impact on current and future students in a variety of ways. Without our ample scholarship and bursary programme, the legacy of a Ridley education would not be possible for many talented and deserving students. The dynamic Lower School playscape provides our youngest Ridleians with a natural environment in which to climb, roll, hide and seek. The next time you are on campus, I encourage you to visit this exciting, new, natural playground. In our Digital Learning Studio, creative Ridleians have access to cutting-edge technology and are equipped to film, edit and prototype products. Our Memorial Chapel, the heart of our stunning campus, enjoyed a restorative touch-up, ensuring that future generations will experience the beauty and solitude of this special place. Of course, none of these projects would have been possible, and none of our students would have enjoyed the benefits of their impact without the support of our many donors.

On behalf of the students of Ridley College, thank you for ‘Making a difference!’

I would also like to thank the generous volunteers and loyal Ridleians who serve the College in their roles as Governors and Trustees. The Board of Governors, along with the Trustees of the Ridley College Foundation and the US Fund donate their time and talent as stewards of the College’s legacy – past, present and future.

We hope that you enjoy our 2014-2015 Annual Report. This publication represents our attempt to keep our Ridley family informed and our promise to be open and transparent. We are most grateful for what it represents;: a passionate community of alumni, faculty, staff, parents, Governors and friends who wholeheartedly believe in our mission of preparing meaningful and flourishing lives by teaching the habits of mind, body and spirit, and the values needed to lead in a global society. As always, I welcome you home to see for yourself – Ridley is healthy, strong and vibrant!

RIDLEY ANNUAL REPORT

From The Chair of the Board Ridley is on the move and the Ridley Tiger is roaring loudly and proudly. Continued investments in the dual track academic programme (OSSD and IB), athletic and arts programming along with Ridley’s powerful houses, cadets, clubs and commitment to community service position Ridley as one of the leading boarding schools in Canada. We are proud to have students from 43 countries on our beautiful campus learning together with faculty to inspire flourishing lives to transform our globe.

The Board enthusiastically supports the Headmaster with the implementation of the strategic plan. The plan sets out three essential principles: i) enhancing the student experience; ii) strengthening our community; and iii) mobilizing our mission. At the Board, and throughout the school, there is passionate discussion about key questions and tremendous progress has been made. It is difficult to find someone on campus who isn’t somehow involved with one of the exciting initiatives.

As in any organization, people are critical to its success. At Ridley, the faculty and staff are key to the successful implementation of the strategic plan. The school is committed to create a workplace that enables the adults to model and lead to advance its vision; to improve faculty and staff engagement and enhance professional learning. The ability to attract and retain exceptional faculty and staff is critical to developing our promises to students and families. The Board supports the Headmaster’s commitment to this strategy and, to this end, has added human resources expertise to the governance structure.

In support of the strategic plan, the Board has supported the development of Ridley’s master campus plan. This plan will serve to guide campus enhancements as well as future development. For the first time the US and Canadian Foundations met with representatives from the Board and the school’s leaders to align on our shared vision for Ridley’s future. Big dreams were shared imagining a day when our endowment is of a size such that all qualified students 2

would be able to attend Ridley regardless of financial means. Work is being done to assess what is possible to build the endowment to achieve our goals.

The Board continues to keep an eye on the long-term financial success of the school. To that end, the Leadership team has been asked to critically review programmes to ensure we are doing the right things and to look for ways to do the right things more efficiently allowing us to continue to invest in talent, programmes and facilities.

Personally, I have had the privilege of supporting the Headmaster’s commitment to engaging the Ridley community by attending branch receptions in Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, New York, Halifax and Toronto. I love seeing alumni and parents come together to share stories about Ridley.

The Ridley campus is a very happy place these days. Students seem to be aware of the unique opportunity they have by participating in the myriad of activities available. They are also working together with faculty on today’s more challenging social issues. I continue to be impressed by the courage of students to lead discussions on bullying, gender, diversity, mental health and culture.

The Headmaster talks a lot about the importance of developing habits to lead a flourishing life. His lessons about commitment to servicing others; dedication to being active; engaging in challenging tasks; searching for a meaningful life; and developing a strong bond with healthy and vibrant communities are habits he himself exhibits and give definition to what has always been the Ridley way.

I encourage you to visit campus soon to feel the energy, see the beauty that is our campus and connect with this generation of Ridleians – you won’t be disappointed. Here’s to Ridley! Terar Dum Prosim, Georgina Black ‘85

Family Guild Executive and Officers 2014-2015

Ridley College Family Guild 2014/15 HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014-2015 Recycled Clothing Programme We were successful in raising approximately $36,000 through our Recycled Clothing sales. Volunteers from the Family Guild collect donated uniform items in the spring and prepare them for resale starting in August.

Christmas Market On November 14th, 2014 the Fieldhouse was transformed into our Christmas Market, a popular event that brings both the Upper and Lower School students, faculty and staff to celebrate the Christmas season. The 2014 Christmas Market generated over $14,000. The day featured music by Ridley students, over 60 vendors, fundraising for school service projects, friend-raising and, of course, Christmas cheer.

Cadet Inspection Reception A first for the Family Guild, we were pleased to host the Cadet Inspection reception in the Second Century Building. It was a nice way to celebrate the students’ accomplishments.

Calgary Reception

Alumni Events Summary

This past year saw many alumni events take place on and off our campus. From HomeComing, the RCA Golf Tournament, and “Young Alumni Pub Nights” to various receptions around the world, we enjoyed the opportunity to spend time with our proud alumni, friends of the school and past and current families.

Receptions in places like Toronto, the Bahamas, Hong Kong, London England, and New York were well attended. These receptions allowed us to communicate our accomplishments in the recent past as well as our ambitious goals for the future while receiving valuable input.

Our continued efforts to engage younger alumni gave us the chance to travel to several cities in Ontario, such as Toronto, Waterloo, and even right here in St. Catharines, to host pub nights and understand what the recent graduating classes are experiencing. Additionally, we were able to hear what they envisioned as a successful young alumni programme.

Among our major events were two golf tournaments, Winter HomeComing, and, of course, fall HomeComing and the hugely successful 125 Bash — celebrating 125 years of Ridley. HomeComing included the Governors’ Dinner, campus tours, alumni rowing and soccer and much more. The RCA Golf Tournament was held at Peninsula Lakes Golf Club, while the inaugural ‘Birdies & Pucks’ Golf Tournament, held at Thundering Waters Golf Club, successfully raised funds for the hockey programme.

We are looking forward to another year of exciting and worthwhile events and programmes with the entire Ridley family!

At Ridley College, we take great pride in offering significant financial aid to dese means and opportunities for young men and women that would otherwise be un from donors and students alike regarding the impact of these gifts.

From our Students The ability to attend Ridley College has afforded me with a range of opportunities that I otherwise would not have experienced. From the use of a variety of facilities, the school trips, service trips, to new sports equipment, your donations have instilled a feeling of pride in my school and in me. As a Ridley student of seven years, I feel as if I have heavily benefitted from all that Ridley has to offer, and this would not be possible without the scholarship I was awarded upon my entrance to the school. I can say with confidence that Ridley has not only changed me as a person, but has helped me to develop into the young woman I am today. I have you as donors to thank for that.

Having the chance to attend Ridley College means the world to me. The opportunity to pull on the orange jersey or dark blue blazer over my shoulders and wear it with pride is a gift. I have been lucky enough to experience many different cultures and I have made what I know will be life long friendships at Ridley. Your generosity has changed my life; none of this would have been possible if not for your generous donations, and I am eternally grateful for this opportunity. Thomas Crosbie ‘17

Arwyn Workman-Youmans ‘16

My experience at Ridley extends far more than what is learned in the classroom. Each and every student here receives the opportunity to participate in a range of sports, clubs, and activities which lets us step out of our comfort zone and participate in things we never thought possible. Through the generosity of our donors, I and the rest of the student body have been granted these experiences and we are all thankful for it.

Mackenzie Berkhout ‘16

I would like to thank our donors for their contributions to the Jazz Band. My time at Ridley has been incredible, and it could not have been this way without my experiences on the trumpet. I thank you very much for helping our student body to become successful, well-rounded individiuals.

rving students. Due in part to the generosity of our donors, we are able to provide the nable to flourish in the various endeavours around the school. Here are some messages

From our Donors The ability to attend Ridley College and become part of the Ridley family is a wonderful opportunity. We are happy to help provide this to boys and girls from our community and around the world. Financial assistance allows students from differing backgrounds, skill sets and cultures to come together, develop and strengthen their character, find their passion and be part of something special and exciting. We are all part of this group we call the Ridley family. It’s our responsibility to help these students become leaders while at Ridley and in the global community.

Maria Menechella, Parent

Coming from a humble, rural community on Cape Breton Island, there were few opportunities for youth. Had it not been for Ridley—and in particular the generosity of Ridley donors—I never would have been presented the countless opportunities that Ridley offered me in those formative years. Ridley gave me the sense of discipline, drive, and dedication necessary for success in university studies and in a competitive work force. Now that I am in a position to give, I do so with pleasure. I encourage all graduates of all years to give. Even the most modest of gifts can be used to help unlock the hidden potential and talents in a youth that would otherwise go undiscovered.

Evan Clarke ‘05

One of the many lessons Ridley teaches is to give back. My fellow classmates and I are thrilled to contribute to the Class of 1985 Bursary as we see it as an opportunity to give back by offering a deserving student the opportunity to have the education and experience that we continue to cherish.

George c. Hendrie ‘74

Geordie took up the reins as the Board Chair in December of 2009 and during his tenure saw the opening of the new arena and Fieldhouse, the introduction of the International Baccalaureate Programme, a new Headmaster and the celebration of the school’s 125th birthday. The Hendrie family has a long and loyal history with Ridley - Geordie was the first legacy Chair. His father, the late George M. Hendrie ’49, served as Chair from 1992 – 1995 and pioneered the incorporation of information technology into the school.

As Chair and as a parent of three Ridleians: George ’09, Alice ’07 and Jeanie ’05, Geordie was in a unique position to understand the entire Ridley community. We thank him for his long lasting commitment to Ridley College and his dedication to the school motto “Terar Dum Prosim”. 22

RIDLEY ANNUAL REPORT

THE RIDLEY COLLEGE ANNUAL CAMPAIGN 2014/15 Thank You for “Making A Difference!” We are grateful to the support from many members of the Ridley family – alumni, parents, past parents, current and former faculty and staff, and friends of the school. Your donations have collectively helped us to realize the projects the school identified last year. Here is a brief summary of your donations at work at Ridley:

The Chapel Restoration Project Last summer, the Memorial Chapel was covered with scaffolding as crews went to work to restore the roof, replace copper flashings and pipes and repair some critical stonework. This completes Phase 1 of the restoration project. Phase 2 will involve restoring the stone masonry work to its original beauty. Our goal is to raise the necessary funds to complete Phase 2 during the summer of 2016.

The Digital Learning Studio We were excited to purchase and have in place three 3D printers for the start of school. Students from Grades 7 to 12 use these printers across many disciplines, including co-curricular activities. With the funds raised, we are also renovating the former dark room in the 2nd Century Building to house additional equipment, including video cameras, microphones, digital recorders, lighting and much more, taking the possibilities of film and digital editing to new levels!

The Lower School Playscape Much time was spent over the course of the summer to review and refine plans for the playscape so that we could ensure a first class facility for students to learn and play. We were excited to break ground on the first phase of the playscape project on October 19th 2015. This January, our students are making full use of this space, which include changes in topography to create a hill and tunnel, a tree fort, a water feature, double slide, sand play area, gaga ball court, and climbing wall. With fundraising support this year, our hope is to further enhance the playscape with several additional features in place by next spring. In addition to funds raised to support these three projects, we are grateful to the many donations we received over the course of the 2014/15 year. These have helped to transform the educational experience for our students be it in the classroom, the gym, on the stage, the playing fields or the rowing course, and have helped to make a Ridley education possible for many deserving students.
