ANNUAL REPORT

1

F rom the BOARD OF GOVERNORS

Dear Ridley Community,

Our annual report is an opportunity to reflect on the past year most recently ended. As Chair of the Ridley Board, I also pause to take stock of all the efforts of our collective school community. It is a chance to share our stories and successes with the Ridley family and congratulate all who belong to it on another remarkable year.

As we pushed back against the forces of the pandemic, the 2021–2022 school year was an opportunity for us to re-envision and restart. Classroom learning returned to normal, we resumed in-person gatherings with the Ridley community, we returned to cadets, and celebrated Prize Day, not only for the Class of 2022 but also with the Classes of 2020 and 2021 who came back to campus in force in June to make up for their celebrations that had been suspended. It was a reminder of the strength of our community and how vital these gatherings are to the fabric of being a Ridleian.

In March of 2020, when we were projecting the impact that COVID-19 could have on the school, Headmaster Kidd highlighted that we would be evaluated as a school based on how we navigated this unprecedented time. I can safely say that the broader community has spoken, and Ridley has emerged stronger than ever. This is also reflected in our enrollment. This September, we welcomed a record 764 students to campus, representing 55 countries, for the 2022–2023 school year. 247 new students joined us, confirming the value placed on a Ridley education and proving our success throughout the pandemic. In June, Ed Kidd became the first Head since 1981 to commence an 11th year in office.

We began the 2022–2023 school year with renewed optimism. School travel resumed, and we are once again meeting Ridleians where they live, traveling again throughout North America, the Caribbean and the UK. We look forward to reconnecting with you in

person in the coming months. At the school, we are once again moving as a full school body, returning to September camp days and holding Opening Days, Ridley’s 133rd birthday party and Snake Dance. We also hosted the most historic Homecomings in Ridley’s history, inviting all classes ending in 0, 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7 back to campus to celebrate their reunion after missing two annual Homecoming cycles.

Our alumni and donors once again amazed us with their support of our school. Ridley saw more than $750,000 raised for the annual Ridleian Fund, including $480,000 for our scholarship and bursary programme, which ensures that our students have the necessary financial supports they need to experience a Ridley education. In addition, The Campaign for Ridley continues to progress. We have raised nearly $50 million, making this the largest fundraising campaign in the school’s history. Nearly $40 million is for our current capital initiative, and we continue to receive your generosity to meet the costs of this transformative project.

We broke ground for this project on March 7, 2022. Since then, significant progress has been made on the Iggulden Building and Athletic Complex restorations and additions. We anticipate that these stunning facilities will open in early 2024. I implore anyone who has not yet seen what we are doing to visit our campaign website at www.ridleycollege. com/campaign

The Board of Governors and I have significant pride in Ridley’s leadership and in each employee and volunteer who has helped to navigate unique times and cement Ridley’s global strength and standing. We will, without a doubt, reflect on this era with gratitude and pride in our entire community for its service, resilience and courage.

Terar Dum Prosim, David K. Carter ’88 Chair, Board of Governors

CONNECTING THROUGH GRATITUDE

"Gratitude

– Melody Beattie 2021-2022 was a year for the RCFG to Connect Through Gratitude with the goal of making meaningful connections amongst our community through RCFG general meetings, socials, fundraisers, and friendraisers.

We started the year off with our mentor programme and greeting new and returning families through Opening Days.

HIGHLIGHTING THE FUN IN FUNDRAISING

The Committee Chairs did an amazing job with many fundraising events this year, both in-person and online. Among the highlights were a Pop-Up Outdoor Recycled Uniform Store, a popular Virtual Lucky Wheel, an exclusive Christmas Raffle draw, an artistic Virtual Paint Night featuring our very own talented art teacher, Mrs. Harper, and our in-person Designer Purse Bingo. This year also saw the return of our in-person Trivia Night, along with two Meat and Seafood Fundraisers. We were so excited to resume our beloved TigerFest, and while we only invited our Ridley Community, the event was a great success, with many new families attending. Our Committee Chair’s endless efforts paid off, and a generous amount was raised throughout the year. The dedication of these volunteers knows no limit!

FRIENDRAISING AND SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

The RCFG held our favourite event—the Wine Social—at Creekside Winery. Some of the Executive Team dressed up for Halloween and cheered on the students as they paraded by. We were able to hold and assist in the Book Fair again this year, helped teachers and students in making their play videos, gifted the faculty and staff with personalized cookies and notes of gratitude, and helped decorate for the Cadet Ball. We ended our year helping clear out uniforms from the dorms, which parent volunteers helped launder and return to the RUP for sale in September. We also collected personal clothing items left behind by the students and donated them all to Goodwill. At Thanksgiving, we collected food items for Community Care. We also collected items for the Shoebox Project for Women in Need, headed by Olivia Massis. During one of our Monthly Book Club meetings, we even held an in-person meeting with author Dean Serravalle. We organized Lower School students to create holiday cards that were dropped off to a seniors committee in Fonthill and helped the Development Department package treats for students that were in isolation in their houses.

makes sense of the past, brings peace for today and creates a vision for tomorrow."

THE DAVID A. MACLACHLAN VOLUNTEER AWARD

The RCFG was pleased to join Headmaster Kidd in awarding Hannah Ulrich with the David A. MacLachlan Volunteer Award. Hannah Ulrich arrived at Ridley when her daughter, Olivia '24, was commencing Grade 1 in 2012. Hannah quickly became immersed in everything Ridley.

To date, Hannah has been involved with the Lower School Book Fair as a Class Representative, as well as a volunteer with the Christmas Market and TigerFest. Her leadership skills were evident as Vice President, Acting President (when called upon), President, and Past President of the Guild.

In addition, Hannah was Chairperson of the New Family Mentor Programme and is responsible for its development into the thriving initiative that it is today. This programme benefits new students and families entering Ridley from far and near, with Cultural Representatives reaching out to China, Africa, Germany, and Turkey. It’s safe to say — the most challenging times for this duty took place during the time of COVID-19!

Further, Hannah played an integral role in the

Strategic Planning review of the Guild. This process saw the review of all existing programs. All attendees at our meetings worked with Hannah and the Strategic Planning Committee to create Mission, Vision and Promise Statements for the Guild. These updated statements lead the Guild in a way that complements the fundamental beliefs of Ridley College.

During her year as President, she worked diligently, along with Thomas Ng, on the creation of a Legacy video presentation. No doubt this piece will live on and serve as a reminder of the important role the Family Guild has played at Ridley.

The Guild, too, under Hannah’s leadership, continued its involvement with the broader community.

Community Care benefited from the collections received during Food Drives. Toys collected by Lower School students were delivered to underprivileged children in the area, and working with Upper School students and the Shoebox Project, the Guild assisted in filling boxes with gifts, along with handwritten notes of encouragement for women forgotten during the holiday season!

The true heart of giving shines through the RCFG members in their generosity and passion, caring for our Ridley Community.

RIDLEY COLLEGE FUND USA, INC. - NAMED BURSARIES

G.O.

This document reflects revised endowment fund details as a result of a write down due to one of the fund's negative contributors. Bridging Income was written down to zero value while the fund is managed by a receiver and authorities investigate the managers of the fund. If at the end of the investigation there is some value in the investment, the Foundation will recognize the increase in value at that time.
