2017–2018 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Members of the Ridley Community,
W
e are pleased to present the 2017–18 Annual Report and are incredibly grateful for what it represents: a passionate community of parents, alumni, faculty, staff, Governors and friends who wholeheartedly believe in our mission of preparing meaningful and flourishing lives by teaching the habits of mind, body and spirit, and the values needed to lead in a global society. In retrospect, the 2017–18 school year was a year of celebration, a year of self-reflection, and a year of growth and progress. Ridley students, JK to Grade 12, experienced learning and discovery, inspiring guest speakers, exciting hockey games and rowing regattas, and meaningful service trips to Malawi, China and Guatemala. This exceptional educational experience is made possible by a community enthusiastically willing to invest in Ridley with time, talent and treasure. We count our blessings for this unwavering support. In particular, I would like to acknowledge and thank a few volunteers. First, I would like to thank and congratulate our Flourish: A Gala to Benefit Ridley College planning committee of volunteers, who designed and hosted an unforgettable night of celebration at the Arcadian Court in Toronto. Special thanks to the leadership and dedication of our Gala co-chairs, Maria Menechella, Bill Hutton ’76 and Jim Greenshields ’76, as well as their team of volunteers. I would also like to thank Marie Ritchie, President of the Ridley College Family Guild for 2017–18, and the members of the RCFG Executive committee, Deepa Sharma, Eva Schmidt, Fil Stabile and Nancy Elder for their dedication and many hours of service to the Ridley community. And finally, this year marked the conclusion of 15 years of service and leadership to the school by Georgina H. Black ’85. In September 2018, Georgina stepped down as Chair of the Board of Governors after 4 years of governance leadership at Ridley. On behalf of the Ridley community, we are grateful to Georgina and inspired by her dedication and loyalty. At May’s Prize Giving ceremony, I referenced our first Headmaster, Reverend Dr. J.O. Miller, and his address to those gathered for Ridley’s first Prize Day in 1889. On that auspicious July day, he concluded that the nascent Ridley College had “distinct and definite work to do.” As we embark on the next leg of our school’s journey, I suggest that we keep Rev. Miller’s words in mind. In addition to being “distinct and definite,” the work of our school community must be of enduring value. With the support and loyalty of the global Ridley family, I am confident that we will be successful in achieving our vision of “inspiring flourishing lives to transform our globe.” To the entire community, please accept my heartfelt gratitude for everything you do to help Ridley thrive as a truly special place of learning, service, and discovery. 2 | 2017–2018 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Ridley Community,
T
he 2017–18 academic year was certainly one to be celebrated and this report has been produced to encapsulate all that Ridley College has accomplished across the year—from the school’s strengthened financial position, successful fundraising efforts, student achievement, alumni connectedness and heightene d school pride. As you flip through these pages, I hope you feel honoured to have been an active contributor to t he whole school’s prosperity. This past year has marked my final one as the Chair of the Ridley College Board of Governors, a role I continue to feel honoured to have held for the past four years. During this period and my subsequent 10 years as a Governor, I was privileged to participate in the development of two Strategic Plans, contribute to the decision to introduce the IB Programme, facilitate the Master Campus Plan and modernize the governance structure of the Board. I share these successes in an attempt to illustrate the immense progress Ridley has made thanks to the thoughtful collaboration of passionate Ridleians. Without the acumen of our Headmaster, committed expertise of our Governors, dedication from faculty and staff, as well as the generosity of our donors, our school would not be on its current, and very positive, trajectory. It has truly been my pleasure to lead alongside and learn from these loyal Ridleians. As a proud Ridley Mom to Andrew ’14 and Jack ’17, I’ve experienced the school from yet another unique vantage point. I’ve seen my own children mature into thoughtful, ambitious, young men of character who possess a global mindedness and acceptance for others who may be different or hold opposing views. It’s no wonder then that our school continues to attract top students from across Canada and around the world. It is no wonder that we reached a record enrollment of 700 students in 2017–18. It feels like only a short time ago I was accepting my own diploma on Prize Day. To have had the opportunity to graduate students bursting with potential as they prepare “to lead flourishing lives to transform our globe” has been extremely fulfilling—doubly so when I had the opportunity to hand my own son his diploma. This past year the list of top universities our students have matriculated to is impressive; another testament to how Ridley’s student-centred approach manifests itself. It has been an honour to serve as Ridley’s nineteenth Board Chair. As I step down, I do so with full confidence in David Carter ’88’s stewardship of our community and with the knowledge that we are on the path to reshape the learning landscape in Canadian independent schools. My service to Ridley has allowed me to fortify many relationships across the Ridley network. Ultimately, it has deepened my adoration for my alma mater. Terar Dum Prosim, Georgina H. Black ’85 Retired Chair of the Board

One of the merits of a Ridley education is reflected in the way our alumni lead flourishing lives beyond the Marriott Gates. Countless Old Ridleians are thriving both personally and professionally, living meaningful lives while actively transforming our globe. One such alumna that is doing precisely that is Jeannette Stock ’09, who is not only taking the tech industry by storm but also paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse tech landscape. Jeanette grew up hearing stories from family members who attended the school before her and in 2006, she too became a Ridleian. Upon arrival at Upper School, Jeanette embraced every opportunity to explore her passions that extended well beyond the classroom. She was able to strengthen her academic proficiency, appreciate the power of community and learn invaluable skills that would carry over to her post-secondary career.
Thank your parents. Seriously. — Jeanette Stock ’09
12 | 2017–2018 ANNUAL REPORT
Jeanette continued her education at Queen’s University, studying Life Sciences and graduating with a degree in English Literature. She spent a semester abroad, studying Chinese history and global development in Shanghai. Beyond her academic career, Jeanette volunteered as an Advanced Medical First Responder and assisted in the launch of a health education programme in Kenya over the course of two summers. Upon graduating—with a distinguished resumé at hand—Jeanette began to work for Jack.org; a charity that was started after the loss of a fellow Ridleian. Initially her career path wavered, yet Jeanette’s vast experiences helped her discover what she sought professionally. Once she was confident with the direction she wanted to move in, Jeanette tapped into Ridley’s vast network of alumni and reconnected with Old Ridleians, such as Anna Mackenzie ’07. Jeanette was able to gather invaluable advice that helped her navigate through the tech industry and now works for Highline BETA as a New Venture Associate.
Although her repertoire is already filled with evidence of determination and talent, perhaps Jeanette’s foremost achievement has been Venture Out. Venture Out is an initiative launched by Jeanette and her peers in 2016 with the goal of connecting LGBTQA+ people working in technology with career and networking opportunities. In 2017, Venture Out held its inaugural conference for LGBTQA+, welcoming over 450 students and professionals seeking careers in the tech industry. Since its launch, Venture Out has hosted nearly 1,000 individuals during events held at major companies such as: Facebook, Twitter, Google and LinkedIn. Jeanette is reshaping the landscape of the tech industry, making it a more diverse and inclusive environment. As she moves forward in her own leadership pursuits, she hopes to have an impact on the future of technology in Canada, through Venture Out and Female Funders—a learning platform and community that empowers women to invest in start-ups.
It wasn’t until I stopped thinking about what I wanted to be and started thinking about what I wanted to do every day, that I ended up on the path I’m on now. Taking some strangers for coffee and learning about the ups and downs of their roles would’ve gotten me there faster, and saved me a great deal of soulsearching. — Jeanette Stock ’09
As she reflects on her time at Ridley and the path that has led her to where she is today, Jeanette has two pieces of advice for Ridleians who are about to embark on their own professional journeys: 1. Reach out to interesting people. Connect with individuals who have established varying careers and can help you discover the best path. 2. Share your gratitude and appreciation for those who have helped you reach your potential.

ALUMNI EVENTS SUMMARY The 2017–18 Advancement calendar once again provided proud alumni, current and past families, friends of the school, and many others the opportunity to come together and celebrate Ridley. From Winter Homecoming to golf tournaments to coffee chats and receptions around the world, the global reach of Ridley’s supportive community was on full display. Receptions in Boston, the U.K., Hong Kong, Muskoka, and Seoul were well-attended and offered a chance to recount old stories, hear new ones and understand the goals of Ridley’s future.
16 | 2017–2018 ANNUAL REPORT
Among our major events included two golf tournaments, Winter Homecoming and, of course, Fall Homecoming, which included Governors’ Dinner, campus tours, alumni rowing, and much more. The RCA Golf Tournament was held at St. Catharines Golf & Country Club and we had so many teams join us for Winter Homecoming, we had to rent additional ice! We are already looking forward to another year of exciting and worthwhile events with the entire Ridley Family.

FROM THE FAMILY GUILD THE DAVID A. MACLACHLAN VOLUNTEER AWARD We are honoured to join Headmaster Kidd in acknowledging and thanking Laura Menechella for her exemplary service to our Guild and school. Laura’s dedication to volunteerism at grass roots and leadership levels has helped make our Guild a strong and vibrant parent community organization.
WE PROUDLY SERVE OUR PARENT AND STUDENT COMMUNITY Our Family Mentors reach out to our newest families to welcome them to our community and to offer mentorship support. Our recycled clothing initiative also helps us to connect with Ridley’s newest and to reconnect with many returning families. Our lost & found initiative helps reunite our students with their misplaced items and 'Baking for Boarders' provides treats throughout the school year to our youngest boarders.
WE PROUDLY SUPPORT OUR STAFF AND FACULTY Our Staff Appreciation Day honours faculty and staff with smiles, handshakes, and small tokens of appreciation. In addition, we assist with numerous school events including; Upper School’s Fall Play, Winter Musical, Cadet Ball, IB/Mock Final Exams, and Graduation, as well 18 | 2017–2018 ANNUAL REPORT
as our Lower School Book Fairs, Science Fair, Christmas Play, Debate and Public Speaking Symposium, and Celebration of Learning.
NEW INITIATIVES FOR 2017–18 Our dedicated focus on centralizing communications and volunteer coordination helped us to boost support for our project coordinators and chairpersons in our many events and initiatives. This year we implemented the use of SignUp Genius: an online tool that allows our members to easily volunteer their time and talents for projects and events. Use of SignUp Genius grew throughout the year and is now the foundation for our ever-increasing volunteer participation.
EVENTS OF 2017–18 Our Christmas Market, a two-and-a-half-day event in early December, was by all measures, a great success. Our Trivia Night added a warm and friendly event to an otherwise cold evening in February. In June, Tigerfest joined forces with the city of St. Catharines and FIBA to create an exciting event in downtown St. Catharines. Funds generated by our events and recycled clothing initiative programme are directed back to our school as annual giving to scholarships and bursaries.

FINANCIALS Jim Parke, CPA, CA DIRECTOR OF FINANCE & OPERATIONS
R
idley College’s financial position continues to strengthen. With
student enrollment levels approaching capacity, the school completed the year on June 30, 2018 in a fiscally sound manner. The resulting surplus allowed the accumulated operating fund deficit to decline from $6 million to $4.8 million. The strengthening financial position allowed us to invest $2.4 million in capital improvements to our campus, facilities and equipment in the past year. Tuition and fees comprised 87% of the total revenue. Annual grants in aggregate of approximately $1.35 million were received from the Ridley College Foundation and the Ridley College Fund USA, Inc. We continued to develop alternative sources of revenue, and Ridley’s expanding array of summer programmes attracted more than 1,900 children to the campus this past summer. The Hanks campus store and arena concession stand continued to expand their range of offerings. We also endeavoured to increase the rental income derived from the public’s use of Ridley’s facilities when the arena, fieldhouse, theatres, gyms and fields are not being used for school programming. Our greatest asset is our people — a talented collection of faculty and staff who are committed to delivering an exceptional educational experience for our students. It logically follows that our largest expense is the investment in Ridley’s employees through salaries, benefits and professional development. Other significant operating expenses include maintenance of facilities and grounds and financial assistance. Ridley is firmly committed to our financial assistance approach, which attracts talented students who might not otherwise be able to afford a Ridley education. We continue to invest in new information technology solutions and the required infrastructure to support such technology. Ridley’s Wi-Fi system was dramatically enhanced to provide faster and more extensive campus-wide coverage. We are very fortunate to have a strong philanthropic base at Ridley. The generous donations from our alumni, parents, employees and friends are a key element in Ridley’s ongoing success. Your continuing support is greatly appreciated. Ridley’s year-end financial statements have been audited by Deloitte LLP. The auditors have provided a clean opinion. I am pleased to share with you, in the attached report, some details of our financial picture for the 2017–18 school year. Sincerely, Jim Parke, CPA, CA Director of Finance & Operations

I’m really grateful to have come to Ridley for my high school experience because it is essentially a preview of the real world and the realities it holds; the academic, athletic and artistic climate at Ridley helped me adapt as it constantly enables and empowers me as a student to capitalize on opportunities, overcome challenges and ultimately develop my strength of character. I truly think that Ridley is a unique environment in which an immensely vast array of culture and languages coexist, but no matter the background, every single individual at Ridley shares a collective, familial sentiment of community like no other. — Vida Han ’19

FLOURISH: A GALA TO BENEFIT RIDLEY COLLEGE Members of the Ridley community filled Toronto’s iconic Arcadian Court ballroom on May 5, 2018 for Flourish: A Gala to Benefit Ridley College, which raised an incredible $275,000 for our school.
We would like to express our gratitude to all who sponsored, donated to and attended this event. Special thanks are extended to our title sponsors, Ward ’74 and Lori Seymour. Proceeds raised by Flourish will go towards increasing scholarships and bursaries.
After three years of anticipation following the 125 Bash, 200 members of the Ridley community united to show their support and Tiger pride. Set against a dazzling orange backdrop, celebrity emcees (and Ridleians of Distinction), Bruce Croxon ’79 and Amber Kanwar ’04 opened the evening with a rousing welcome. Headmaster Kidd also took to the stage to express gratitude on behalf of the school and to underscore the power of our shared connection.
We are grateful to our Gala Co-Chairs, Maria Menechella (Governor and alumni parent), Jim Greenshields ’76 and Bill Hutton ’76 and the dedicated volunteer gala committee members: Mike Allen ’03, Heidi Burgess, Honor McLachlin ’87, Laura Menechella, Margy Nitsopoulos-Massis, Matt Picken ’93 and Scott Snowden ’97, as well as our staff volunteers.
Following a delectable gourmet meal, the auctioneer led guests through exciting live bidding on prizes ranging from vacations to vintage wines, and even an opportunity to name a road on campus. A beautiful display of tempting silent auction prizes—donated by over 100 Ridley supporters—lined the second floor balcony throughout the night. And for the first time ever, those who could not attend the gala in person were able to participate in the silent auction by placing real-time electronic bids via an online app called ClickBid. Live music by the talented Parkside Drive kept guests dancing through to the early hours of the morning. Flourish was a wonderful display of school spirit, unity and support, and thanks to the generosity of attendees, raffle and auction participants, the gala raised $275,000! “When the Ridley community comes together, there is tremendous positive energy and great accomplishments can be realized,” explains Susan Hazell, Director of Development. “The funds raised at the gala will be transformative for current and future generations of students, who would not be able to attend Ridley without this support.”

A HISTORY OF GIVING Susan E. Hazell DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
A
n Annual Report is akin to a report card — providing you, our stakeholders, with a snapshot of the 2017–18 year. So how did we do? What does our report card look like? What are our measurements of success? I would argue that our success is measured by the investment of people — their time, talent and treasure — who come together for a common cause, Ridley College, to inspire flourishing lives to transform our globe. With this in mind, I share with you some key indicators of our success from the 2017–18 year.
The 2017–18 “Unlock Potential” Annual Giving Campaign, the foundation for all fundraising, continued to build on past successes by broadening our donor base with increased participation from our alumni and current parents from around the world. The Ridley Family showed they could provide the keys to ‘unlock potential’ for our students and faculty. The generous support of our donors ensured that we not only met, but surpassed our goals, enabling us to realize three key projects: the completed renovation of our Lower School Library, increased funds for scholarships and bursaries, and enhanced funding to support best educators at Ridley. The many events of 2017–18 would not be possible without the support of the Ridley community. These are opportunities to celebrate our community, to create and renew friendships and to support our school. We are grateful to the many volunteers, participants, sponsors, and donors this past year who helped ensure the success of the following events: Fall and Winter Homecoming – celebrating reunion years, Ridleians and Athletic Lives of Distinction, hockey and volleyball and the many friendships and networking opportunities. Flourish: A Gala to Benefit Ridley College – a roaring success and magical night of great food, wine, dancing and fun, raising $275,000 for scholarships and bursaries. RCA Golf Tournament - with over 100 golfers enjoying a fabulous day at the St. Catharines Golf & Country Club with dinner back on campus, in addition to raising over $20,000 for scholarships and bursaries. Birdies & Pucks Golf Tournament at Thundering Waters Golf Club - welcoming new and returning hockey families and alumni and raising $12,000 for our men and women’s hockey programmes. The Ridley College Family Guild (RCFG) Christmas Market - with two and a half days of shopping and fun for Ridley and the Niagara area community, raising $27,200! RCFG Trivia Night – bringing parents, faculty/ staff, and friends together.
U18 Americas Championships and Canada Games, showcasing Ridley in downtown St. Catharines’ Street Festival, with games and food for the whole community to enjoy. Ridley Branch Receptions - bringing together alumni, current and past parents and prospective families in Barbados, Beijing, Boston, Buffalo, Cayman Islands, Hong Kong, Korea, London (U.K.), Muskoka, New York City, Ottawa, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Toronto. Last year we introduced several new initiatives in our efforts to increase alumni engagement. Thanks to Hugh Silk ’87, Tiger Talks has become a fixture of Fall Homecoming. Alumni who are celebrating their reunion year are invited to give a Tiger Talk (similar to a Ted Talk) to our students. Last year, sixteen alumni spoke to our students on topics ranging from How to Live Forever... Or Enjoy Trying to Career Collisions: The New Normal. In May, we launched an exciting new alumni social media platform: the Ridley College Network. This is an interactive platform that acts as a ‘one - stop shop’, providing alumni with the opportunity to join through their Facebook or LinkedIn accounts, post and view job opportunities, sign up for events, join groups, conduct searches, post photos or comments and more. As of this printing, we have over 900 alumni signed up and we hope to hit 1,000 members before Christmas. In conclusion, we are excited to report that we have completed an 18-month detailed planning phase for The Campaign For Ridley, a major campaign with goals to raise $30 Million for capital projects and $10 Million for endowment. We, along with an impressive campaign cabinet comprised of alumni, current and past parents, look forward to unveiling the plans and details in the months ahead as we turn our efforts to raising major gifts. I hope that as you read through this report, you will be instilled with a continued sense of pride and confidence in Ridley today, and excitement for the future of Ridley! Respectfully submitted with gratitude to our volunteers and donors, Susan Hazell Director of Development

ANNUAL FUND CAMPAIGN PROJECTS
LOWER SCHOOL LIBRARY PROJECT (PHASE TWO) $159,000 We completed Phase Two of this renovation project, creating three new innovative learning spaces, adding new furnishings, new carpet and reconfiguring the room for more space and multi-purpose uses. Lower School students of all ages can collaborate in small groups, work with tutors in quiet spaces, read in small nooks and enjoy presentations in this beautifully re-designed space.
SUPPORTING BEST EDUCATORS $103,000 With support from our donors, faculty and staff participated in workshops led by Dr. Lea Waters, a leading international expert in positive education, and founder of Visible Wellbeing. These workshops served to advance and strengthen our work in building a community dedicated to positive and visible wellbeing. These funds also helped us to redesign and transform two classrooms in the Stanley History Wing to allow for flexible and collaborative learning spaces.

COLLECTIVELY YOUR DONATIONS HELPED US TO ADVANCE OUR MISSION AND VISION. We are grateful for the support of many members of the Ridley family — alumni, current and past parents, current and former faculty and staff and friends of the school.
The following projects were identified by the school for the 2017–18 “Unlock Potential” campaign. Thanks to our many donors, we were successful in realizing our goals and completing each of these projects.
SCHOLARSHIPS AND BURSARIES $536,550 Ridley has always prided itself in its ability to provide talented and promising students with a world-class education. More than 30% of our students receive some type of scholarship or bursary each year. By supporting Annual Fund Scholarships and Bursaries, our donors have helped students thrive on campus and flourish in the world beyond.
CLASS OF 2018 (GRAD)ITUDE FUND $1,116 In the spring of 2018, the graduating class expressed its gratitude to Ridley with a leaving class gift that would ‘support mental health initiatives to benefit future Ridley students’. With Grade 12 students contributing $20.18 to their fund, enough money was raised to fund a Jack.org Assistant Program. Jack.org is a Canadian charity that trains and empowers young leaders to revolutionize mental health.
