Illuminated Impressions- A Visual Journey
OPENS
AUGUST 6, 2022 Reception: August 6th from 1-4PM
As we celebrate our gallery’s 25th anniversary, we reflect on the many opportunities that have fortuitously
aligned to make our gallery successful. At the top of our list is artist Michael Obermeyer introducing us to the work of Kim Lordier in 2006. At that time pastel was a relatively new medium for us, and we had all the usual questions: will they fade, will they last, and why are they under glass? (Answers: no, yes, and to protect them from moisture and accidental smearing.) Suzanne and I went to the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association show in October 2006, purchased two of Kim’s pastels, and soon invited her to show in our gallery. Thankfully, she said yes, and over 400 paintings later we proudly present our 8th bi-annual show of her amazing work. In this show, Kim focuses mainly on the light and color of scenes here on the Monterey Peninsula. Daylight, sunset, even at night, Kim captures the essence of the ever-changing light and colors of this world-famous area. Kim claims “it’s just pure pigment,” but pure pigment becomes magic in her hands. Enjoy! Jim Rieser Owner, Rieser Fine Art
IT’S JUST PURE PIGMENT. PASTELS. But through an artists’ lens, pure pigment becomes a visual impression upon a flat surface. When passion, paint and perspective combine... the effort becomes effortless. Whisked away to a remembered place or striking a chord in your heart, this collection is about color and light. The Montery Cypress
Waltz at Dusk 24x30 Pastel on Archival Board
THE MONTEREY CYPRESS ICONIC TREE OF THE CALIFORNIA COAST Thriving in the foggy coastal clime where wind and salty sea spray make it difficult for other species of trees to live, the Monterey Cypress clings to granite cliffs and sandy soils. As early as the 1800’s, these iconic trees, with their unique windswept shapes have inspired artists from around the world. From the tangled chaos of their root structure to the graceful branches that sway to the rhythmic beat of the ocean, the Cypress has inspired me to dance with pigment on location and in the studio.

THE GOLDEN HOUR
ON THE THRESHOLD 16x24 Pastel on Archival Board
Chasing the sun as the radiant glow eases to the west, the Golden Hour touches our souls, insisting we stop and experience the exquisite visual sensation fully. As a painter, this briefest of moments is the most difficult to harness from life. We learn to paint the magical moment quickly. Making note of fleeting color shifts as the shadow of the earth climbs up and over the horizon in our painted studies. These small illuminated impressions, sealed into the mind, are brought into the studio to inspire. Sparked by memory and the quick studies, I paint to create the illusion of the Golden Hour.
SILKY SMOOTH
20x25 Pastel on Archival Board
Crystal Springs Reservoir has made an appearance in my work ever since I started painting from life. This beautiful gem in the heart of Silicon Valley reminds us how important open space is in our lives. While cement cities surround the San Francisco Bay Area, these protected coastal ranges and oak studded hills provide a respite from the chaos.
Turquoise and Gold
On location at Point Lobos
GOLD LICHEN AND TURQUOISE SEAS 20x26 Pastel on Archival Board
The first time hiking Cypress Grove Trail in Point Lobos State Park I fell in love with the juxtaposition of the gold lichen covering the southwest facing granite as it plunges into the mesmerizing turquoise sea. EVERY single time I walked that part of the trail I thought someday I wanted to paint that color combination. But over the years could never find a composition that inspired me. This year I finally sat down on a boulder and just painted the colors I saw. That was enough. Enough to spur me on in the studio to create my own story in pigment. My memory, my love, my impression.

COASTAL ALLURE 12x24 Pastel on Archival Board, is of Fan Shell Beach along 17 Mile Drive in Monterey.
I remember driving the Pacific Coast Highway and absolutely falling for the massive rolling sand dunes covered in vibrant rusts and reds in Monterey County. The ice plant, an invasive species, is currently being pulled out of the area for restoration of native plants. It physically pains me, for aesthetic reasons, to see the removal of these vibrant colors. But, I completely understand why this is necessary, as the ice plant originally planted in the 1900's to stabilize the soil along the railroad tracks actually wreaks havoc on the local ecosystems. I see how these opposing thoughts on my visual aesthetic reflect the passions that run through our cultural, economic, religious and social differences. The anger and frustration between conflicting principles must be met with compassion, understanding and most important common sense. The color red.

GREEN OAKS AND OCHRE HILLS
California’s rolling gold hills studded with dense oaks and poetic eucalyptus trees provide abundant inspiration. From the fertile soils of the Salinas and Ojai Valley to the coastal mountain ranges I revel in the tapestry of greens, ochres, and purple shadows that weave through our state.

“I believe authentic creativity, in all forms, is an intimately human endeavor, a way to relate spiritually with one another, a way to feel connected to the beauty of our world. My art is grounded in life’s passions and joy. Ever grateful for the opportunity to visually express my voice in pure pigment, I dance to the rhythms of nature in pastel.”
Painter and California Native, Kim Lordier received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco and University of San Francisco. Flight attendant, competitive horsewoman, and artist, her career path varied until the events of September 2001, when she committed to her life’s work as an artist. Lordier’s art examines the patterns of nature, and how light transforms the mood of an environment. Known for utilizing rich color and a tapestry like effect in her mark making, Kim weaves her spiritual relationship with the outdoors into her work. Lordier’s paintings are in private and public collections throughout the country, and have been exhibited at the Autry Museum, Maynard Dixon Country, Coors Western Art Show, National Arts Club, Salmagundi Club, and Forbes Gallery in New York, Haggin Museum, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Irvine Museum, Hilbert Museum, and the Laguna Art Museum. Her work has been showcased on the cover of Art of the West, PleinAir Magazine, Southwest Art, and The Pastel Journal, as well as featured in Western Art and Architecture and Fine Art Connoisseur. Acknowledged by jurors and her peers, Kim has received recognition for her landscapes at major plein air events, international magazine competitions, national pastel society shows and museum exhibitions.
