“The Luminous Landscape: New Paintings by Kim Lordier” Is there a better pastel artist in California today than Kim Lordier? We’ve been asking ourselves that question since we were introduced to Kim in 2006. There are a number of great artists working in the pastel medium right now, several of whom we own and admire, but Kim’s quiet, peaceful landscapes, sensitively rendered with luminous effects of light, always stand above the rest. We are honored to present our 6th bi-annual exhibition of Kim’s incredible art. In this show, Kim focuses mainly on the light and moods of California’s Central Coast. From the first morning light to the last glow of evening, you can feel the warmth of the sun and the cool of the fog, as sun and fog do their endless tango along the beaches, through the cypress trees, and into the oak-studded hills. You can hear the excitement of crashing waves, or rest in the quiet of a country road at dusk. But above all else is the luminous light, the glow of a fleeting moment on a special day, that no one captures better than Kim Lordier. Jim Rieser Owner, Rieser Fine Art
We’ve been given the gift of time. Time to slow the pace, to just breathe. Time to sort through our own truth. The cost of this gift… huge. Frustration and a fear of the unknown… but also an understanding. An acknowledgement of community, the importance of a single smile. The desire for a positive story. A knowing that we are connected on a deeper level. As an artist, this gift of time is reflected in this new body of work that I am honored to share with you. Painting, for me, is sustenance. I thrive in quiet contemplation of Mother Nature, and am ever intrigued by the conflicting fulfillment and frustration of the creative process. This gift of time to delve deeper into the meaning of why I paint anchors me. The collection is about luminosity and a sense of place. Being present with your feet planted, grounded, rooted. Aware of the pulsing sun, or a cooling note as day drifts into dusk. I play in pigment, rich in color, with dusty fingers and a flick of the wrist, as the marks I’ve placed merge into a memory. Of being there. Of belonging. A deeply heartfelt thank you to Jim Rieser for all the years of support, encouragement and willingness to work with me and handle my paintings. Kim Lordier Artist

HILLS OF GOLD
COASTAL RANGE RHYTHMS
Oaks in shadow, oaks in light. The glow of gold folds into night. Rolling patterns traverse the curves, and brittle wheat grasses snap and swerve.
The Douglas Fir forests and chaparral covered hills of the coastal range between the Bay Area and the Pacific Coast coexist in harmony. While the pockets of Eucalyptus groves denote homesteads of decades past. I love the rich colors of this protected area, and the shape-shifting movement of the flora. The sun rises above the hills back lighting the fog as it pours over the ridge. Crystal Springs sparkles below.
LITTLE GEMS Mere color and tone, created to inspire new work for the show. These petite gems sparkle and gleam, and are worthy of a home of their own. Modestly framed and priced. Look for the Diamond for more Little Gems.

WORKING FROM LIFE INSPIRED I return to the spot, where granite boulders from the old quarry at Whaler’s Cove line the parking area. My footsteps crunch on gravel, as I set my easel up, sliding tripod legs to waist height, and snapping my candy (pastel) box onto the tripod head. Drawn to this cove for over two decades, entranced with her rich colors and sparkling waters, I settle in, ready for her secrets to give themselves to me. The sound of otters clacking crustaceans against rocks set on their chest. The call of a cormorant. Kelp undulates above and below the surface, while the translucent water draws my attention to the mysterious depths. Quickly, before the sun pushes the fog away, I lay pastel against the sanded surface of my board. The scratching noise disturbs the quiet while pigmented dust settles gently upon the easel. Emeralds and turquoise, ochres and umber, elements of earth, the illusion is cast. Ah, but alas, the sun peeks through, glowing light spreading its warmth along the edge. Just in time, the finishing touch.

CYPRESS GROVE TRAIL REFLECTIONS A glorious day along the Cypress Grove Trail in Point Lobos CA. Pastel box up, ready to go. I dig in, chasing filtered light from a rising sun and capture a sparkle in my hands. There is nothing better than the rush of grabbing onto a moment in time, that ends up being a timeless moment. These plein air pieces are my anchor in understanding the terrain, light effects and way the flora grows. Working from life builds memories of sight, smell, touch and taste to bring back into the studio. I reflect on the time spent alone or with artist friends cultivating a spirit of joy, of mindfulness while doing what I love. Brought back to the studio these paintings inspire and inform. Whether expanding on an idea or creating something new with a more dramatic impact in color or design the information gathered on location is priceless.

INTRICATELY INTERWOVEN Rooted in granite, swept by fierce winds. Dusted in rust, an algae that harms none. A tangled chaos woven into lace, forming a rich tapestry measured in time and place. The Monterey Cypress stands strong. You will find this beautiful Cypress hugging the granite at the apex of the Cypress Grove Trail in Point Lobos. She overlooks the ocean with power and grace.
Trentepohlia, a green algae, appears orange due to carotene, a pigment which is found in carrots. The growth does not harm the trees.

STRIKING A CHORD
Illuminated by a setting sun, the red paint of time peels from well worn boards. Oaks in fall standing tall, the last of the leaves ground into dust. The circle of life sings through the season.

SEASONAL CHANGES Embraced by the warmth of Autumn, California from the High Country to the Pacific spreads her charms as the day turns to eve. The color palette ochres, oranges and greens. Smiling, I lay one vivid hue along side the next, whether on site or in the studio, a richness I try to achieve.
NOCTURNE Mysteriously, the moon draws our humble dreams as iridescent clouds and wisteria colored skies beckon. In stillness, twilight lingers, as a cool breath skims my shoulder. The nocturne, a tonal poem of night.
